Subject: Scott McCoy's Survivor League Check In
Posted by: RBP
- [16124215] Thu, Aug 05, 2004, 21:59
Just post a message so we will have a record of who's in and who's out. This is by invitation only firts then opened up to others. Scott
http://www.fftoday.com/special/unique.htm
Survivor Format "And the next off the island is..." Last year I had the pleasure of competing in HEFFA (Huddle Elimination Free For All) which, to my knowledge, is the first fantasy league format based on CBS' Survivor reality TV show. The league was born at the Huddle forums and is the brainchild of Scott McCoy (a.k.a. OKIPAPPA).
In this Survivor league, similar to the show, the goal is stay on the (virtual) island until you are the only one left. "Out Draft, Out Score, Out Last"? There are no immunity challenges and you can't form a voting alliance to save your bacon in this league. Eighteen owners draft a fantasy team and each week of the NFL regular season the lowest scoring fantasy team is dropped from the competition.
Not really knowing how this format would play out, and since many HEFFA owners were already in numerous other fantasy leagues, the league rules had an overriding motto to keep it simple. We drafted only 10 roster spots - which is still decent depth considering there are 18 teams - and from the 10 started 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 WR/TE, 1 K and 3 flex-RB/WR/TE each week. There are no trades allowed except during the draft and no free agent pickups so it really is a test of consistency and perseverance for the players you draft to form your team. Your top receiver tears his ACL? Deal with it. Only starting QB out with a concussion? Better you than me. One bad week and you could be gone.
Bye weeks are a bit of a concern since there aren't enough starting quarterbacks and kickers to go around, and with only room for 10 players, each roster spot is very valuable. You can choose to draft someone to cover the bye week or roll the dice during a bye that some other team will suffer a really horrible week and get the boot instead of you. I tried to cover a week 13 bye week for Jeff Garcia with Jeff Lewis, who I was sure would take over for Steve Beuerlein by that time. That mistake turned out to be my bon voyage from the island. I don't think we ever did solve the "1 kicker or 2?" debate.
To give you an idea of what to expect, the inaugural HEFFA champion's roster was: Troy Aikman, Tim Couch, James Stewart, Michael Pittman, Priest Holmes, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Amani Toomer, Jacquez Green and Sebastian Janikowski. This is probably the only 2000 champion fantasy team out there that can say it sported Troy Aikman and Tim Couch at QB.
One thing the league has tried to come to grips with is keeping owners active after they get the boot. Side contests help a little in this regard. Just hope the infamous week 1 departed owner is a good sport because half the fun is not letting this person forget it - right Hokie?
Drafting skills and luck are both huge determining factors in your success in a Survivor league like this, not necessarily in that order. This is a really fun format though and I highly recommend you try it out. The thing that really appeals to me is that it is low-maintenance during the season but a very tense competition week-to-week (plus no Jeff Probst).

I'm in. I'd like to propose immunity for the highest scoring team each week until the final 4.

Count me in Scotty, sounds like a blast and lots of strategy during the draft. Going out week one would be a real bummer!!!

After the draft their is no transactions and your lineup is determined after the week is over to maximize what is your best combination. It's a nice extra type of league on the side, after the draft you just watch and see what happens. We have never had immunity before but I've heard of it at footballguys that the top scorer from each week had immunity the next. Maybe through week 8 we could do that. We'll adjust rules as need be but with 18 owners voting on stuff takes time. I'll finish up my rules stuff which will all be posted here, I'll condense them down into maybe 2 or 3 options and we'll procede with 1 vote and egt drafting within a week or so. Scott

Bargain basement guys in the late rounds can really make your team strong if you get the right ones. Injury prone players are good for your team but not for mine if you know what I mean :-) Bye week management is a must, can't have 5 Packers on your team because you'll be playing with only 5 players that week. 2 or 3 QB's? 1 or 2 Kickers? 1 K and 1 QB? Lot's of options.

Payouts with a $360 pot will probably be $50 for the weekly high scorer (all teams are in this even if eliminated). $210 for the winner and $100 for 2nd place. I've asked Tim Dahl and Ed Neslon to help me manually track scores (6 teams each) and we'll use the same scoring system that we have been using for LMS that way the computer will already be adding them up for us and we'll just have to cut and paste totals then figure out what each owners best lineup was. Nothing complicated, thats the idea.

Scotty, $20 in per head correct? I have seen you play this before and it will be challenging for the draft I must say. Do you go with the extra RB or WR QB?? Decisions, decisions. When you say trading during the draft, do you mean picks or players or both? Good to see that the losers can still compete, not that I will be there. Can I ask Ed L. and Jim and Lorin and Tracy?? I am sure for $20, they will get in. You can vouch for them of course. One more question, do we submit weekly or if we don't do we default to the previous weeks picks?

Draft will start very shortly after we have 18 players. After we get 18 we will "roll them bones" then pick draft spots. Mike your best lineup is picked you AFTER the week is over. Like I said it's low maintenance so it doesn't take up any time during teh season. You just draft and watch too see how well you did. Scott

17 | RBP

Yes. Basically we look at your team after the week is over and see what would have been your best lineup and that's the points you get. So if your team is deep and all 10 players are playing then you have a better chance to post a good score. If you have 7 guys who start for their NFL team and 3 who are backups the you need your stars to play better every week to hang around. If you can draft 10 solid consistent players then you should go far. If you draft guys like the Corry Dillon of old who would get 35 points 1 week then 3 points, then 29, then 4 then you can see that on his bad weeks you could be hurting.

We have... Scott McCoy Jim Shak Ed Leonheart (plus friends?) Mike Skiba Tim Dahl (Invited James Henry if he shows) I think that Buddy said yeah but not sure and I haven't heard from Ed Nelson yet which is surprising. So we need 10 plus guys minimum so recruit your friends, it is a very fun side league which doesn't take up any of your time after the draft except for the amount of trash talk you'd like to engage in. I guess the sheer volume of leagues being played now days is the issue. $20 bucks is nothing, most of these guys spend that at the snack bar at work buying cokes and candy bars?
You can tell the people with the "Love" they play no matter what is happening at home,work,wife,girlfriend,sports,illness,vacation...you get the picture...It doesn't take up that much time.....

IF we can't scare up enough for 16 teams, what about each team picking two? Just something to throw out there. I am going to hold off sending the money until we get enough teams. You know I am good for it. If we do get this up and running, you could make a week 3 pay limit. I know it would be better to get it done ahead of time, and safer, but we are running out of time.

Ok H3 what was the question? Payouts, oh yes just what everybody wants to know. Also their is the issue of "payins" but thats another issue. Their is 18 owners paying $20 each. The sites we will use (this one is free) cost nothing so it all comes back to you (if you win). OK Jon I like your suggestion, let's tweak it to... Survivor gets $210 Runner up gets $100 (making the final two is tough and should be rewarded) Highest total score for all 17 weeks gets $50 Highest 1 week scorer gets his money back which is appropriate.

Put your address in the top addy box and mine in the second. scott.mccoy@andersen.af.mil When I get them I'll post it here. We'll say the higher the better (hi man picks 1st, low man picks 18th etc). I'll send my roll to Tim and he can post it. Any questions? Do it right or you'll probably have to do it again. We'll break ties by whoever rolled first so get at it!!!

I might have to compile all of the rules on here tomorrow but here is 2 things I just thought of. We will go ahead and give the top scoring owner each week immunity for the next week but it will only last through NFL season 8. Week 9 their is no longer any immunity.
Also tie breakers. Tie breakers for any given week are TOTAL TD's scored by your team, then total TD's scored by your lineup then rushing TD's, recieving TDs and finally passing TD's. It will probably never even get to a tiebreaker but you never know. Besides that I think amongst all of teh other posts I have covered everything. Does anybody have a question, if so shoot it out to everybody here and I'll answer it.

the league rules had an overriding motto to keep it simple. We drafted only 10 roster spots - which is still decent depth considering there are 18 teams - and from the 10 started 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 WR/TE, 1 K and 3 flex-RB/WR/TE each week.
Survivor gets $210 Runner up gets $100 (making the final two is tough and should be rewarded) Highest total score for all 17 weeks gets $50 Highest 1 week scorer gets his money back which is appropriate.
TSgt Scott McCoy 1535A Gardenia Lane Yigo, Guam 96929

And no transactions after the draft, you get what you draft to last you all 17 weeks! You can trade during the draft but teh max # of players you can have is 10. All trades must be for even number players or picks ie 1 for 1, 2 for 2, 3 for 3 etc.

1) Week 8 is the last week you can WIN immunity.

The guys name is Jeff Davis, High School Math teacher in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He won our league 2 of the 5 years and was paid accordingly. This past year he took over commish duties and once the season ended he said that he's sorry but he used Clyde and my money to put down as a downpayment on his house. I don't personally know him but I've known him through that league for 4 years with no problems. That's why I'm skeptical to come on here and just take anybody, if you vouche for them then I know that HHH, Shak Daddy, HHH and Tim Dahl will make sure that I get paid.

If we don't get enough I suggest we have a cumulative score for the first weeks. For example, if we have 17 owners, we add up our scores from Week 1 and 2, and the lowest is out after week 2(unless the lowest somehow won "immunity" in one of those weeks, then it would be the 2nd lowest). If we have 16 owners, we add up scores from Weeks 1, 2, and 3, and the lowest is out after week 3. Makes perfect sense to me...just hope I spelled it out clearly enough for you.
Cheers, JHHH
Of course the winnings will have to be reduced...
