0 Subject: RQFL #1 Draft - Rationales #1

Posted by: youngroman
- [206491016] Thu, Aug 19, 2004, 06:22

This thread will be for managers in the RQFL #1 to provide the rationale for each pick.

only league-managers should post here, and only the rationales should be posted.

try to keep the rationales in order. best is to write your rationale when you do the pick and post it here 2 rounds later.

after the draft we should also post a draft recap with info about used strategy, how the strategy worked out, expectations for the season, etc.

please post in this format
1.01 Ricky Williams - RB, MIA

1.01 L. Tomlinson-RB,SD Not wanting to risk anyone's ire, I am posting this rational in a timely fashion. They are the 2 top RB's, and the decision was FINALLY made by choosing youth over age and injury history.

I really wanted LT with this pick, but who can argue with Priest. The man is flat out solid. Over 2000 total yards 27 TDs last season. I will take it anyday.

This was between Green and Portis and I think there are still too many questions in Washington for me to take that chance with my #1 pick.

You can throw a blanket over Portis, Alexander and McCallister. I just like Portis, have him in my in-person keeper league and hope that Gibbs rides him to glory. But you really can't go wrong with any of those 3 RB's.

Draft Position 5

Before the position draft, I was undecided whether I preferred #5 or #6, the choice depending on whether or not I was willing to include Shaun Alexander with the consensus top 5 backs. #6 was gone before I drafted, ending that conundrum. youngroman's choice of #7 with his first pick means either that he is not worried about Jamal Lewis' legal problems, or that he has someone else (Moss?) who he's willing to lump with the top 6 guys. It'll be interesting to see which.

1.05 Deuce McAlister, RB, New Orleans
Decision really made for me here, as Deuce was the one of the top 5 backs left. I consider him even with Green for the 3 and 4 slots because of concern over Portis' moving to a new system. Deuce is playing in the same situation as last year and has proven yardage, TD and receiving capabilities.

1.06 Shaun Alexander

i was hoping for Deuce, but i was fairly certain that Toral would get him, and sure enough, he did.

you gotta take a RB in the first round. unless it's late in a deep draft and someone like Moss is available, RB,RB,RB, and, oh yea, RB.

Shaun Alexander was the best available. that is all.

1.07 Jamal Lewis, RB, BAL
the tougher pick was to pick the draft position. I decided to pick 7th because there are 2 backs ahead of the pack (Holmes, LT) and 5 following them shortly. All those picks from 1 to 6 were done as expected, so the one left was Lewis. I'm fine with him and don't think that he will miss significant playing time because of his legal troubles. Playing 2 times vs. CIN and CLE is also a plus. Still I have to be careful at picking my 3rd back because this guy could get more then the 2 planned games because of byes.
picking higher in the first round leaves me with a lower 2nd round pick, where I hope to get a top QB or WR.

Youngroman had the RB's grouped as the top 7. I had them as the top 8. When choosing my draft position I chose 8 so I can get one of those 8 and then hopefully get a 2nd back on the snake back(Didn't work out). I had targetted Edge with this pick and I was able to get him. Going back a couple of years the question was who is #1 Faulk or Edge. Edge is now 2 years removed from surgery and the 2nd half of last season really showed that. I think edge will be a top 5 back this year if not top 3.

1.09 Fred Taylor, RB, Jax
The concern with Taylor in recent years has been health, not productivity. Yet, he's started every game for the past two years, so those concerns are no more an issue for Taylor than with any other back in the league.
Last year he rushed for 1572 yds on 345 carries and caught 48 passes for another 370 yds, more than Ahman. If there was a disappointment, it was that he only hit the end zone 7 times.
Taylor is a threat every time he touches the ball. His success as a rusher is contingent on the Jags having a decent passing attack, but with Leftwich having some experience and Jimmy Smith available from the start, defenses will have to play it more honestly than they would against the Ravens or Chargers.

1.10 Peyton Manning,QB,Ind.
Okay...I admit this was a mistake.I forgot that this league devalues passing yardage and obviously could have gotten Manning later.Had one of the backs picked before me dropped I would have grabbed them;also looked hard at Moss here. However I feel Manning is the best QB in the league and with a healthy James expect great production from him.
FWIW- Barlow or Moss or even Culpepper would have been a better pick in this league at this point.

1.11 Randy Moss, WR, MIN

Im not fond of Moss or Minny but unlike Baseball where my emotional connection comes in the way, Moss is just in a class by himself, completely capable of wining a few games for me singlehandedly. I guess I made my bed with this pick, not going rb. Ill get to them later.

1.12 Kevan Barlow, RB, SF

This is my first year playing fantasy football so please bear with my short & boring analysys. My idea with this pick was that I was going to take the best available RB, unless Moss was available with this pick. It just so happens that he went the with the previous pick. I'm banking on continued improvement from Barlow for this season. I've read a couple of places that had him ranked between 12-15th among RB's, but I have higher hopes now that he is a full time starter. I also feel that San Frans' Offence might not be as bad as some think.

1.13 Travis Henry, RB, Buffalo

AHHHHHH! Of course Barlow goes 1 slot before me, one of my favorite RBs in the league. I was hoping he slipped because of his current situation in SF but oh well. I knew I had to take a RB. Henry was the best available IMO and I just have to hope Buffalo will treat him correctly and then deal him next year. I knew the RBs that would fall to me would all have question marks and I will have to hope they can work through it. Henry has been a stud when given the chance and I see no reason for Buffalo to snub him this year.

1.14 Marshall Faulk, RB, Rams

How the mighty have fallen. I think Marshall is the new Fragile Freddy. He is an injury risk and he plays for a coach that gets too pass happy and doesn't give him the rock enough, but when healthy and he gets the rock he is a top 5 back. I just hope he can stay healthy this year maybe this could be his year. Bottonline he is a risk but has a huge upside.

2.1 Domanick Davis, RB, Texans
I almost sent in several different directions here, but I had to go with 2 RB because I didn't think their would be a decent one left when it got back to me. He did get dinged at the start of training camp, but should be good to go. He doesn't have anybody stilling any carries from him or goaline carries. I looked at some other backs like dillon and rudi, but dillon new team, new system. Rudi, i just couldn't take a bengal.

2.02 Corey Dillon, RB, NE

As long as Dillon can stay healthy I really like this pick. He has a solid passing game to work with on a great team. He is a big play guy that can put up huge numbers at any given time. I believe Dillon is going to have a huge year and thought it was smart to take 2 RBs with my 1st 2 picks since Henry is no sure thing.

2.03 Torry Holt, WR, STL

Well I'm glad to see that the other managers are well researched. Thus, I didn't find that their was a RB that justified being taking with this pick that was still on the board. I looked a Culpepper, but decided that I would hold off at least one more round before going for a QB. Harrison was also another option at WR, but I think I made the right choice. Some might say I went a little early on this pick, but I like what I got.

2.04 Michael Vick, QB, ATL

I probably would’ve taken any of the RB’s drafted ahead of me. I was really hoping for Dillon here. My choices at this point were unattractive for the 18th overall pick. So I decided to get a QB. What can I say, I wanted Vick, hate Fatpepper. I probably should have tried to trade down a few spots and could have still gotten Vick. I know, I should have taken a RB here but 3000+ pass, 750+rush is a good substitute. On Sundays when I watch my pats beat the phins record, I can always check in on Vick, the best player in the game and be extra happy when he breaks one for 70 and a TD.

2.05 Rudi Johnson, RB, CIN.

Had to get a RB here and had a slight hope Barlow or Henry might slip. As THK said all backs at this point have a few question marks but since I had Davis and Johnson ranked a little ahead of Dillon and Faulk I was happy to pick Rudi at this spot.I expect an improved Bengals team to compete and Johnson to approach 1200 yards and 10-12 TDS.
Concerns are;will Perry take away any carries and can Carson Palmer not make too many mistakes and keep the offense on the field?

2.06 Daunte Culpepper, QB, Vikes
At this point in the draft, with Manning and Vick gone, a run on the remaining top QBs seemed inevitable. My choice was between Culpepper and McNabb.
Culpepper and Moss have been together for quite a few years now, while McNabb and Owens may have to go through a learning process before really hitting stride. I have them both grading about even, but the edge goes to Culpepper, especially if he keeps the fumbles to a minimum and tucks and runs more often.

2.07 Terrell Owens, WR, PHI
With the top RB's all gone I was hoping to get Culpepper with this pick as I had him ranked as the #1 QB. Being that he was taken I went with Owens. Moss IMO is far and away the clear cut #1 WR. After that you have the next group of 'elite'. While Owens had an off year he still was pretty good. I expect him to be back to the numbers he was having the past few years except for last. I think Owens is more consistent on a week to week basis over Harrison.

2.08 Donovan McNabb, QB, PHI
after Culpepper, Holt and Owens were picked I hoped that either McNabb or Harrison could fall to me. McNabb got the contract because of his great 2nd half last year. I only hope that he continues like that and not that he starts like 2003. Also he has a new top-receiver in Owens out there which could help a lot.

went against my draft philosophy here, and drafted a WR.

but 23 picks in, with Harrison still being available, it just needed to get done.

odds are good i would have taken McNabb anyway if Harrison hadn't have been available, which proves my draft strategy is just a sham anyway...

2.10 Tiki Barber, RB, NYG

My plan is to take two RBs to start and I ignore the distraction of QBs and WRs flying off the board around me. Everyone at this point has question marks. Davis is a little old and faces in-house competition. One fantasy magazine insists that Westbrook is overrated and won't succeed as a main back (they better be right!)

Barber has fumbling problems, a new coach who may not like his style, and Ron Dayne playing well to steal time from him. I think he has talent enuf that Coughlan wll make use of him and he will put up his 1200 yards and more scores than last year.

2.11 Brian Westbrook, RB, Philadelphia

I made this pick before the wiggs "four corners" stall (just messing with ya wiggs) - which was also before Westbrook's teammate Correll Buckhalter when down with injury. So at the time the pick was made I was taking a chance in taking Westbrook, and it was probably early.

Now with Buckhalter out of the picture and Westbrook the #1 back, the pick is turning out to be a gem. With only Dorsey Levens to spell him on occasion, I like Westbrook's chances to excel in Philly's more dynamic offense now that Terrell Owens is in the fold. Sure Westbrook hasn't proven himself extremely durable yet, but the kid can definitely play. Most don't realize he was Philly's #1 rusher out of their RBBC last year.

3.04 Matt Hasselbeck, QB, Seattle

Hines Ward and Chad Johnson were taken within the 6 picks between my 2nd and 3rd rounders, much to my dismay. The way I saw it, the next grouping of WR's were so closely bunched together that I couldn't choose one over another and felt that nobody in that group stood out enough to represent value at this pick......so I changed my direction and took the top QB left on my board.

Seattle is undoubtedly a team on the rise, and Hasselbeck is at the controls of a team with a lot of weapons - a great OL, stud RB and 2 solid receivers. I can't see him taking a step back this year - if anything he has the capability of improving on last year's numbers. Hasselbeck IS above the next grouping of QB's, so I felt it best to snatch him now.

3.05 Steve Smith, WR, Car

My plan calls for grabbing 2 RBs first and then 2 WRs in the next two rounds. With the top 5 WRs gone we're not at the beginning of a second tier of about 10 WRs. I'll grab the guy at the top of my list, with the faint hope that someone from this tier will sneak by next time up as well.

Steve Smith is that guy. Jake Delhomme could be improved in his second year, and Smith should be able to produce at a minimum something halfway between his 2002 and 2003 seasons: 70 catches for 1000 yards. Closing the deal for me is Smith's return yardage, which'll provide more points and a TD or 3.

as a starter he could emerge as a big-time-receiver this year. and getting some return yards also helps his production. i think he was the best (and last) remaining top-producer at WR. I hoped to get him or Steve Smith with this pick and it worked.
if both were picked already I would have gone with Ray Lewis to get the best defense player in the league. I'm not really hoping that Ray is still available for my next pick, but who knows.

I hope for 75 receptions for 1100-1200 and 10TD + a couple of returns with a bonus-TD

Like most I wanted two RB's with my top 2 picks. With my second pick there were no RB's that warranted my 2nd round pick so I went with a top WR. Curtis Martin is still the man in NY. He only had 2 TD's if I remember correctly but I have to expect that he will do better this year. From everything I have read it seems like Martin is poised to have a great year. I think 1200-1300 Yds & 7-10 TD's is very reachable. From what was left I thought he was the most solid.

My strategy took a bit of an aside on this pick. Coming into this draft, I went through a few Mocks, and thought I knew what to expect. But the # of RB's being taken is absolutely insane. Twenty SIX RB's have been taken in the first 42 Picks?!

Back to the player selected, I decided to fill out my last WR slot with Coles. He might see a few less throws this year than last, but should still put up almost similar #'s. I'm a little concerned about his fragility, but it's not enough to pass him up on this pick. Should be considered a top 10 (3rd Tier) WR.

I know this was a reach but with RBs flying off the board, although there were some nice WRs available I felt I really needed to get my second RB at this point. With 18 picks before my next pick it would be slim pickings for a starting RB at that point.
I really don't expect a lot from George but he might feel the need to prove something and if he can stay healthy 1000-1200 yards and 10 tds is not out of the question.

This may have been a bit early for Rogers, and some will question whether he deserves #1 slot WR status at this stage of his career, but chances have to be taken sometimes. Rogers was living up to expectations as a top-of-the-draft rookie last year when he was injured. Back at 100%, the question is not so much Roger's ability as it is Harrington's. Adding Roy Williams to the mix should give Rogers even more incentive to justify his lofty draft status.

You can never have too many RB's. I now have 3 Starting RB's which should come in handy for bye weeks or injuries. Garner should be the guy in TB and I think putting him back with Gruden should really help him. I am expecting around 1000 yds rushing and another 400-500 receiving with a total of 7-10 TD's. Also having a quality 3rd RB could come in handy as trade bait for someone who needs a RB (hint, hint Bandos)

4.08 Warrick Dunn, RB, ATL

was the best available player out there. he could lose some rushing yards because of the competition in TJ Duckett, but I think he will catch a bit more passes to even his production to last year.
I also considered Charlie Garner, but he was picked by WiddleAvi one pick ahead.

I hope for 1200 total yards and 5 TD, maybe a bit more

to also add a note on the very high number of drafted RBs:
I expected it, but I think that the top QBs could outscore all but the top2-RB. I think they were drafted that high because (nearly) everbody is used to draft 2 RB in the first 2 rounds. the real bonus of RB vs. WR is that a RB today does also get a lot of catches which a few years earlier were thrown to the WR.

Robinson is the one with a clear #1 quarterback who is also good. There's enough balls flying around up there for both Robinson and Jackson to have good years, and really know way to know in advance which one will have the better year.

4.14 Trent Green, QB, KC - At this point in the draft I thought that the most prolific point scorer would be a QB. Green with all his offensive weapons at his disposal, not he least of which is Priest Holmes, seemed a logical choice.

5.01 Baltimore - As the saying goes, a good defense will beat a good offense. I really am not sure how things will play out with the league's scoring system, but I am hopeful that the better defenses will be as valuable as the 2nd tier offensive players. The decision was between Baltimore and New England. Tough choice with Bellichek(sic) at New England's helm, but Baltimore won out.

5.02 Peerless Price WR Atl-
With a Healthy Mike Vick might we see the old Peerless Price? I sure hope so and if we do he is an absolute steal with the 58 pick in the draft. I am expecting 1300 yards and 10 TDs out of him.

4.13 Jimmy Smith WR Jax
This is out of place because loki jumped the gun, big time. Anyways:
Smith put up solid numbers last season in only about 12 games. This year he is healthy right from the start and i expect 80 catches and about 1200 yards. He is the main target in Jax and if the Defenses try to shut down Taylor it will leave smith with some single coverage.

The rest of My Draft:

5.12 Lee Suggs, RB, CLE
Finally a RB worth taking again. I was sweating something fierce, expecting Bandos, who had no RB's at this point to pick Suggs. According to him, his plan was to pick Wheatley and Suggs. Personally I didn't have Wheatly on my Radar yet, so I was glad he decided to let Suggs slide. It appears that he is now the front runner for the #1 RB job in Cleveland, so this should raise his value, from the question marks he was having before.

6.03 Chad Pennington, QB, JETS
This exactly what I expected to happen and yet not, on this pick. In my mock drafts I was looking at either getting Pennington or Garcia with this pick. Leading up to this pick, it was looking like Brady or Mulger might slide. I had them all grouped roughly at the same level, with a slight advantage to Brady. However, Monk decided to take two QB's with his pick, so this pick ended up going as I orginally planned.

7.12 Dallas Cowboys, DEF
I had Dallas Ranked higher than Miami (Post-Ogunleye Deal), so I was surprised that they made it this far. With the six major starters (QB, WR, and RB) covered it was time to switch gears. Like can be seen with most of my picks, I try not to be at the end of a run, so I forgo'ed the IDP run.

8.03 Alge Crumpler, TE, Falcons
I didn't want to pick a TE here. I really should have taken a back-up WR. Crumpler should see improved #'s with a healthy Vick, and definetly qualifies as a TOP 5 TE. I rate this pick Mediocre-with potential for high upside.

9.12 William Green, RB, CLE
The Handcuff Pick. This is the first back-up posisition I picked, and is only probably going to be used is Suggs loses the starting job. He's a young talent though, with lots of upside, so I wasn't going to let him slide out of my reach.

10.03 Mike Vanderjagt, K, COLTS
Not one of my shining moments. I was having a hard time finding direction for my pics now, so took the best Kicker available since I'm going to have to take one at some point anyway.

11.12 Michael Barrow, LB, WAS
I could have let him slip till next round maybe… but wanted to fill out my everyday starter's in the roster first, and then take a few risks later. From what I could tell by scorring formula. Tackles seem to score the most for these IDP guys. This guy certainly will bring me a lot of those. His knee injury is a bit of a concern.

12.03 Charles Grant, DL, NO
Definety the position that generates the least points. He'll give me mediocre tackles. I felt now was the time to jump, because this position goes from bad to ugly in a hurry.

13.12 Carson Palmer, QB, CIN
Now is the time to start takings risks. Not much bigger risk/reward scenario than a talented rookie QB. Even if he doesn't start every game at the beginning of the season, that's ok with me. I just want him to cover my bye week, and hope that Pennington stays healthy. If he doesn't.... I may be regretting not picking my backup earlier.

14.03 Ron Dayne, RB, Giants
Dayne is expected to be splitting time with slippery fingers (Tikki Barber), this year. He's lost some weight, and been pretty impressive so far this preseason. I'm very surprise that he slipped to this point in the draft, but I understand that their are many critics of this guy.

15.12 Dennis Northcutt, WR, CLE
The pickings are finally getting slim at WR. That being said though, Northcutt has created good chemistry with Jeff Garcia, and is currently his #1 go-to guy. Considering that Davis and Morgan were taken in the 11th & 12th round... this might be my best sleeper pick of the Draft. Oh, did I mention he's punt returning? Sweet!

16.03 Tedy Bruschi, LB, NE
Finally! The last starter to complete my lineup. He plays for the Patriots, so no matter what their going to be shutting down a lot of teams offences. I expect somewhere in the range of 80 Tackles and 50 Assists from him this year.

17.12 Indianapolis, Defense
Wanted to get in 2nd Team-D before filling out the rest of my backups. It really is a crap-shoot at this point for a backup defense though.

18.03 LaMont Jordan, RB, Jets
He's got a heck of a lot of potential for breakout. He just needs the chance. He's made his way back up the Depth Charts to back-up to CuMar. I'm hoping that they hand over the #1 job to him at some point this year. Not holding my breath though. He's my RB#5.

19.12 Robert Ferguson, WR, GB
I almost picked Ferguson in place of Northcutt back in the 15th round, and really didn't expect him to swing back around to this pick. I had him ranked in my top 60 WR's and didn't see much else out their. Happy with this pick.

20.03 Jevon Kearse, DL, PHI
I decided to just go with 1 backup IDP to cover the three starters. I didn't think that with my last pick that their would still be some good DL's on the board, but suprisingly their were. He may have to play in one of my flex slots in week 1 with Barrow being questionable.

here is my rest:

5.07 New England, Defense
in my opinion the best defense out there (including the Ravens). They get a lot of turnovers and have the lowest pts-against-average in the league and 3 shutouts last year. It looks like they can get even deeper with the draft-additions this summer.

6.08 Rod Smith, WR, DEN
was a top5-receiver a few years ago. if Plummer throws the ball more often to him he will possibly be back in the upper-tier of WR. It also looks like that he might get some return opportunities this year. this could also compensate the fewer receptions he gets against the top4 (Moss, Holt, Owens, Harrison).

7.07 Zach Thomas, LB, MIA
one of the upper-tier LB which are all gone in this round, only he and Bulluck were left and I think he has the greater upside potential.

8.08 Jake Plummer, QB, DEN
I need at least a second QB and he has the best available value on the market. I expect that he throws for 3500 yards and 25 TD which would also be a not that bad starting QB if McNabb goes down. He could also be trade bait if needed.

9.07 St. Louis, Defense
initially I had targetted a RB or WR but there was no valuable risk-less option left. I'm gonna wait a round or two more to see if one of the guys left is worth a 10th/11t pick.
Because of the lack of RB/WR I took the best available defense, my 2nd one, which I targetted for round 9/10. Initial plan was STL and that was executed. STL allows more points (i hope they will allow a few less then last year) but they are a turnover-machine.
with the 2nd defense on my team some other managers will see soon that there are only the poor or really poor defenses left. and some will have to start such a poor defense week for week.

10.08 Terry Glenn, WR, DAL
it was time to fill my 3rd receiver slot. material is getting short at "real" starting receivers. there are a lot of battles out there for the #2-spot. Terry will be the #1 in Dallas with Vinny as a good passing-QB beside. Only question is if Vinny will stay healthy through the season. But with any of his backups the balls will also be flying to Glenn and he will do the catches.

I'm expecting 55 receptions for 750 yards and 5 TD out of this pick. Not too shabby for a 10th-rounder.

11.07 Andre Davis, WR, CLE
after all my starting receivers were taken and with Davis still on the board (I considered him also for my 10th pick) there was no much time needed who I will pick now. With Jeff Garcia throwing the ball Davis will see a lot of good throws out of him and hopefully he will respond and catch them deep.

I have him projected equal to Terry Glenn, but I recently discovered that Davis could also see some kick-returns. That would be a nice bonus and could rank him above Glenn. Lets see what happens in Cleveland.

12.08 Moe Williams, RB, MIN
He was the best RB available for my bench-spot. If all goes well I have to start him only 2 times this year. I hope he will see enough carries beside Bennett and Smith. What gives him a plus is that he is a catching RB and with Daunte throwing in MIN he will get a lot of good passes thrown to him. And I really jope his carries don't decline too much.

I'm expecting 800 total yards and 6 TD out of him.

13.07 Marcus Pollard, TE, IND
one of the few remaining TE who can catch. What places him a bit over the competition left is his QB. Other TE I also considered if Pollard had been gone: Gates and Weaver. Possibly I get one of this 2 in a later round as my backup.

I'm expecting a bit over 500 yards and 4 TD

14.08 Ed Hartwell, LB, BAL
He was outstanding in 2002, average in 2003, I hope he plays somewhere in the middle of the last 2 years. He should get around 100 tackles, 35 assists, a few sacks and perhaps 1 or 2 interceptions.
He is only my second IDP in this draft and I am happy with him if he plays like expected. He would be a steal if he produces like 2002.

15.07 Antonio Gates, TE, SD
No-one stood out there at this moment. I thought about getting my K or DL earlier then planned, but I decided to get a better value pick. after the draft there will only be 1 or 2 valuable TE remaining and because I will always lead this league I will get the last waiver pick and will never end up with a producing TE if I need one. With 2 nearly equal TE I can play matchups each week.

he should get me the same production like Pollard, 500-600 yards and 4 TD, that is.

16.08 Adam Archuleta, DB, STL
most players drafted for the IDP-slots are linebackers because there are only a few defensive backs that produce at an equal level to all the LB. Archuleta is one of them. I had him ranked higher then some picks I made earlier, but I thought that he could fall to me in such a high round.

I'm expecting around 100 tackles, 5 sacks and the occasional turnover.

17.07 Joe Nedney, K, TEN
time to fill out my K-slot. I think with George gone TEN will see a few more FG-opportunities because they will feel the void Eddie left. that will result in more opportunities for Nedney who looks ok after missing all but 1 game last year. I read great things from him this summer and it is said that he improved a lot this year. this and because of the extra-points we get for 40+ and 50+ shots was the main reason to take him in this round. I could have waited until the 19/20th round to pick up Kasay who was my second man on the K-list but I feel much more comfortable to pick him up earlier and don't miss possibly both of them.

18.08 Antowain Smith, RB, TEN
if Brown goes down or does not play the way all are expecting from him, Smith could play a larger role on that team. what I have read is that Smith is shows his team-spirit but is hungry to play when he is needed. and i am hoping that sooner or later this will be the case.

19.07 Grant Wistrom, DL, SEA
my intention was to pick a DL with my last pick, but I don't think that all sleepers for my other pick that I have on my list will be taken, so I picked my DL first and get a sleeper with last pick.
Wistrom was one of 2 remaing DL on my list. I'm hoping he can produce like last year or play a bigger role with his new team in Seattle. he is good for 50 tackles up to 10 sacks and one or 2 turnovers. If he does not play like expected I should still get that undrafted guy I also considered.

20.08 Artose Pinner, RB, DET
if rookie Kevin Jones cannot maintain the starting position Pinner will be the man. if not he will possibly be the first man to leave my roster because I need a kicker for week 3.

Remaining rationales:
6.14 Dante Hall,WR,KC-Hall is the premiere kick returner in the NFL, and as long as the opposing teams kick to him he should gain many points in these categories. Furthermore if there is an injury to a KC WR, he will help out in receiving categories.

7.01 David Givens,WR,NE-He was picked to complete my starting offensive players with the exception of TE and K which I planned to pick later in the draft.

8.14 Andra Davis,LB,Cle- Time to stop ignoring IDPs, and he seemed to be one of the best remaining at this time.

9.01 M. Muhammad,WR,Car-This pick was probably a mistake as I should have waited longer to pick up another WR.

10.14 Mark Brunell,QB,Wash-He was one of a number of good QBs remaining at this point in the draft. He was on the queue that I left I_A_C, and I was happy to get him as a backup QB in round 10.

11.01 J. Wilkins,K,STL-I think that a quality kicker will make a difference in many of the H2H games. Wilkins is one of the 2 kickers that distances himself from the others in the league and therefore I chose him at this time. Had he or Vanderghat(sic) not been available, I would have chosen a kicker very late in the draft.

12.14 F. Jones,TE,ARZ-With Boldin injured Jones should get much action in and out of the end zone.

13.01 M. Fields,LB,Car-He slipped to this late round because his statistics were so poor due to inactivity. However all reports are that he has fully recovered from Hodgkin’s Disease, and I hope that he will be a defensive steal.

14.14 D. Levens,RB,PHI-Thought he would get much playing time because of Westbrook’s questionable durability. Big mistake for obvious reasons.

15.01 A. Randle El,WR,PITT-Handcuff for Hines Ward.

16.14 Buffalo Defense-Liked their match up on Baltimore’s bye week.

17.01 L. Briggs,LB,CHI-Needed another LB/DL and he seemed to be the best one available.

18.14 J.Chatman,RB,SD-Handcuff for L. Tomlinson.

19.01 A. Schobel,DL,BUF-Needed a back up LB/DL and he seemed to be the best one available at this time.

20.14 T. Collins,QB,KC-Handcuff for Trent Green.

5.05 Brett Favre, QB, GB

My plan was to hold off on selecting a QB until sometime between the 4th and 6th rounds. Outside of the top 2 (Culpepper and Manning), there are about 10 QBs I'd be happy with as a #1, and I'll take any one of them. I want to get 2 solid RBs and WRs first.

Favre, Brady, Pennington and Bulger are left here. I am tempted to hold off for still another round, but some wise guy might decide to take 2 out of this tier before the draft can get back to me so I'll move now. [As Art of Monk did with his consecutive, and very nice picks, at the end of the round]. Favre is declining but I like his durability and feel he's good for 3500 yds and 20 TD. Schedule considerations also play a part: 2 of his 3 games during the playoff round are at home.

6.10 Reggie Wayne, WR, Ind

I finish off my early-round strategy with my 3rd WR in the 6th round. Wayne is my idea of a perfect #3 WR in a league this size, with a solid job and a QB who can get the ball to him. Despite Harrison, I think he'll put up the yards and TDs reliably.

7.05 Miami Defense

Here I want to grab a defense and DL with my next 2 picks, with the top talent at TE gone. Miami has been consistently good in fantasy terms and is mostly intact, although the loss of Agunleye may hurt them here. They have 3 games at home in the playoffs and finish at home against Cleveland, a nice fit.

[I'll continue to update these in the next few days]

8.10 Simeon Rice, DL, TB

Although DLs aren't big scorers, it is a mandatory position and the quality declines well before the 14th one gets chosen, so I want a solid choice now. I want an end, not a tackle, as their sack production is more reliable, and someone whose strength is his own ability, not his situation. Rice is one of the top 5 or so. I'm not worried about the departure of Sapp as Rice has consistently shown his ability. 10+ sacks, 50 tackles, and some forced fumbles along the way.

9.05 London Fletcher, LB, Buf

For a second IDP I want a solid linebacker. Then I intend to forget about the position until the end of the draft -- maybe even not drafting a third IDP at all, and picking one up off the WW instead. My reasoning is that IDPs are plentiful; there isn't the scarcity problem that the skill positions have. I am confident I can thrive if necessary by picking up someone with a good matchup from week-to-week. I might well prefer near the end of the draft to take a flyer on a sleeper, even a lottery ticket sleeper -- a guy who's the undoubted backup to a stud RB and will move in place if the starter breaks his leg in the first few weeks -- than grab another IDP.

Folks like Urlacher and Foreman are available and might have been better picks, but Fletcher puts up 130+ tackles almost every year. Perhaps a biut of a homer pick by this Bills fan.

10.10 Justin Gage, WR, Chi

I'm starting to fill in bench WR and RB slots now. Not enough analysis in my approach here perhaps, as Gage might have been available much later. But he may have the highest upside on a team that will be passing a lot, and I'll take a risk on upside.

11.05 Randy McMichael, TE, Mia

I'm regretting the Gage pick now as I might have been better off to grab a solid backup QB, and Leftwich, Delhomme and Brunell have disappeared in just a few picks. I'll grab a TE starter now. So I dson't forget later? McMichael is a consistent producer and supposedly the new offensive coordinator, the former tight ends coach, wants to expand his production. We shall see.

12.10 Josh McCown, QB, Ari

It's him or Gannon now, and I'm more confident that McCown will be around at the end of the season. Putting some confidence in Dennis Green's ability to build an offence despite all obstacles. And this team will be passing a lot.

13.05 Rex Grossman, QB, Chi

Took a look at others' QB situations before picking here. Someone, a few people, are going to be without what I would consider a decent #2 QB. Maybe I can make life more difficult for them.

What I lack in backup skill I'll make up with quantity. Despite Grossman's miserable camp, I hope that Grossman will adjust to the new Bears' scheme as the season goes on.

14.10 Lee Evans, WR, Buf

Looking for an RB3 here but there are just too many equally dubious choices so I'll take an WR5 instead. Went for a rookie here. As a Bills fan I expect Evans to take the #2 job before too long, considering how disappointing Reed was last year. In my mind's eye I can see Evans as a guy Bledsoe can get the ball to 10 yards down the field in the last split second before he's sacked for the umpteenth time. Rookie receivers are notoriously unpredictable, but I'm not asking him to be Randy Moss. Or even Santana Moss.

4.11 Eric Moulds - He was amongst that next tier of WR's I mentioned in my rationale for Hasselbeck - that at 3.04 there just wasn't anyone amongst Moss, Smith, Jackson, Mason et al that stood out head and shoulders above the rest. Moulds to me isn't that big a drop from the 4 mentioned above, and the fact that I got him 21 picks later made me happy.

5.04 Chris Chambers - This could be a reach pick, but Chambers is undoubtedly talented and could be a value pick at this point in this particular draft. Playing 3 WR's means we are going pretty deep, and to get another team's #1 WR was needed at this point. In a sense I sort of hope MIA's RB problems result in them having to throw a lot, increasing Chambers' role by default.

6.11 Jeremy Shockey - I am hopeful that this is a steal. Shockey has risks, but he has great upside as well. To get him with the 81st pick in a 14 team draft it pretty sweet.

7.04 Donnie Edwards - I never like to be in the middle or end of a run on players. I wasn't going to be afraid of taking an IDP, because they are a position too and the difference between some of the top tier LB's from the pack was pretty significant, and Edwards has been VERY consistent and should be a top producer at IDP - so far so good as he had a long fumble recovery for a TD in week 1!

8.11 Philadelphia Defense I was all set to take Simeon Rice, but he was snatched right before me. Philly's D was ranked as high as 5th on some prognosticator's boards, and that was good enough for me here. While their change in DB's concerns me, they have a monster pass rush that I hope will turn into FF's and maybe more picks as QB's have to rush their throws.

9.04 John Abraham The defensive side of the ball continues for me. With DL a separate position, again for me it comes down to "does the person you can pick now significantly differentiate themselves from the rest of the pack" - I'm not sure HOW significant, but Abraham was worth the risk for me here as DL's were coming off the board. Abraham was an outright stud before getting hurt last year, and I expect more of the same this year. I believe he had a sack in week 1.

10.11 Stephen Jackson I had delayed getting a 2nd RB - not because I necessarily wanted to, but just because I liked the people I took in the previous few rounds. It was time to take a big upside RB here, and I got him in Jackson. Faulk is of course injury prone and with the trade of Lamar Gordon to MIA Jackson is the unquestioned backup. Super high reward here if (when?) Faulk goes down, as I would have a top 15 (or better) RB in the 10th round if that were to occur.

11.04 Anquan Boldin I knew my first 2 WR's were kind of weak and I could've used more of a stud #1 WR. Assuming Boldin returns after AZ's bye week, and returns in good health, this mid-round investment should pay good dividends. A WR trio of Boldin-Moulds-Chambers is pretty sweet if he returns healthy.

12.11 Rich Gannon I eyed Gannon as my backup QB in all of my deep (12 team or more) leagues, figuring I can get him late. Living in No. Cal I have heard all camp the huge chip Gannon has on his shoulder, how he's miffed they brought Collins in, and how he feels disrespected that there would be ANY talk of a QB controversy. This man was the league MVP 2 years ago, and I think he still has something in the tank.

13.04 Drew Bennett I was pleased to get the Titans' 2nd WR here. Should be a steady 3rd WR while I wait for Boldin.

14.11 Scott Fujita I rounded out my starting IDP's with Fujita here. An up-and-coming LB posted high tackle numbers and was complimented by Vermeil for his tenacity. Should only improve over last year's numbers.

15.04 Jerry Rice 4th or 5th WR fodder here. Week 1 showed OAK isn't afraid to use their entire WR corps, so this pick - and the poor schlep who got J. Porter - could be a waste.

16.11 James Jackson At this point in the draft a backup IDP or defense just doesn't seem as valuable as possibly having a RB who takes a starting job. I doubt people will want to trade for "Linebacker X" - but they will trade for a starting RB. At the time I made this pick Jackson was rumored to be traded. That didn't happen but I'll sit on him a bit before deciding what to do.

17.04 Sebastian Janikowski I needed a kicker. nuff said

18.11 Troy Hambrick See James Jackson. Low risk pick here after Hambrick got traded to the Cardinals. If Emmitt continues to show his age he could be replaced or just hang them up. Hambrick is solely trade fodder for me at this point - he may or may not have any value this season, but I wanted to at least try.

19.04 Julian Peterson The guy is a playmaker and not a big tackle guy, and his holdout didn't help his value either. To me it was a value pick to get the pro bowler who is supposed to be even MORE active in the 49ers new 3-4 formations they'll run a lot.

20.11 Michael Clayton TB's #1 draft pick was worth a shot at the end of the draft. Only Joey Galloway and Tim Brown are WR's of note on the roster with McCardell holding out. This pick looked good in week 1 as Clayton had over 70 yards in catches.

It was hard to have a major plan with back to back picks.
5.14 Brady
6.1 Bulger- went with back to back QB, I saw two good players still on the board, I thought great way to screw some teams and give me good trade bait. Maybe I should have taken a WR here, but nothing great was sticking out.

7.14 rod Gardner- wanted a WR and a redskins, maybe gibbs will turn him around. I think I made this pick with my heart a little too much. I should have looked at a LB.

8.1 Rucker-I wanted a top DL. A top DL can be as good as a top LB.

9.14 Warrick- I was very thin at WR, he is another risk, but has a high upside. I am was hoping he would still return punts and maybe break a few. I also wanted Urlacher here.

10.1 Foreman- After the top LB, I feel the next group is pretty similar.

11.14 T. Spikes- same he was rated all over in LB rankings but I took a little risk. Didn't pay off.

12.1 Calico- made this pick before the 2 sprained knees. He could be big, I thought a #2 or 3 WR on a team with a new RB, he should get some balls. We will see what happens this week with Brown dinged a little calico is back healthy.

13.14 J. Peppers- I just couldn't let this guy slide anymore. I think he could be a def. MVP. I was thinking trade bait again since several teams didn't have a DL yet and he is top 5.

14.1 Jacksonville- I need a def and they were the best one left. Not a bad pick at this stage of the draft, but now I wish I would have taken Seattle.

15.14 Cedric Wilson- I still need another WR. He is talented and I was hoping he would still get some return duties. Great first week then gets hurt.

16.1 N. Davenport- I really liked this pick here, I professed myself prophet Monk when Green gets hurt, but I guess my divine inspiration was a little off and Davenport got hurt. The truth could still come forth.

17.14 Patrick Kernny- once again could let this guy slip with several teams still not having a DL. Trade bait for a top 7 DL. This was my 3rd DL which was a little crazy. Only time will tell and this late in the draft you can tak risks.

18.1 Redskins-once again a pick with my heart. I am hoping gibbs can turn around my SKINS. Arrington was talking big that this was the year the def put it together. I still needed a TE and K and I could get those last.

19.14 Daniel Graham-I liked him because we all know that Brady spreads the ball around. I was looking at A. Gates as well. I would say that Graham is the steal of the draft so far. Two big weeks for TE. I know it won't last but I have already gotten 3 TD's out of my TE, I wasn't expecting more than 4 all season.

20.1 Carney-needed my K and NO should put up some points-he has a fairly late bye week was also a factor, i didn't really care much since he is a k.
