Probably time for a new thread.

Please use this one for comments.

I think I have things caught up.

Will see if I have time to catch up the Official Auction Purchases thread.

Quite the wake up call this morning when the shuttle went over head at 0508.

Where are you located at GL. I was visiting my uncle in Southern Cali when I was 10 or 11 and the shuttle landed. The double sonic boom shook the house and I thought we were having an earthquake. My uncle thought it was pretty humorous though.

North of LA.
Right under where they crossed.
Took us a little bit to figure out that was what it was.

Was sure it wasn't the morning freight train that usually wakes me.

OK...new pc at home, set-up, hooked-up...have not managed yet to moce the data from our old hard-drive. That will prolly be on the agenda for this weekend.

I will start a new thread, and under that thread I need for each manager to make one post. In that post, I need for you to indicate who you show n your roster, and how much you paid for them. Over the next couple days, I can reconcile that data with the "Official Purchases" thread.

Sorry about this disruption, but the pc going *poof* wasnt anywhere in the plans. :(

Sarge, not that I don't trust GL or anything, but I would be happy to send you and Wiggs my spreadsheet also.

No offense GL, but I'm an Auditor and as a former manager told me, "In God We Trust, All Others We Audit"

Or in Sarge's case, audit everyone and everything.

Sarge, if someone has maxed their players in a position, would the technically be allowed to nominate a player of the same position.

Also, if a person has the max players for a position, they are not allowed to bid on those types of players correct.

Is there a penalty for this. Just something I thought about that should probably include in the rules.

If a manager has all the slots for a given position filled, then they cannot name a player of that position. (They must bid $1, and they might win.) nd bidding on such a player, like naming one, would have to be treated the same as "over bidding". You can over-bid in terms of $$'s and you can overbid by bidding on a player you cant take by virtue of the roster being full. In both cases, it constitutes a bid the manager cannot honor.

Frick and GL...got the spreadsheets thanks!

GL..looks like you need to add J Porter at $10 to your copy on wiggs squad and Frick, you need to add TJ Duckett at $7 to your copy of wazaap guys squad.

Then, the two spreadsheets jive totally. :)

under the "rosters" thread, also make certin you include each players price in your listing. Remember, when trading, the players salaries go with them!

Its imperative then, that we all be in agreement, over who has whom and at what price.

As for my RB situation, it came down to I didn't know if there would be anyone left after a 5 day leave without a comp. I decided to take my shots, and make sure I had my RB's set before I left. It cost me a crapload, but hey, it's life.

As a newbie to the auction format, I'd like to have a discussion when all are available about the best strategies to use.

For sure, I'm feeling I should have waited until much later in the draft for WRs, only selected 1 D and used all my money on RBs.

Trouble is, no one wants to talk. Why not?
This is not a money league.

I've done this before, but it was a live aucton draft with a bunch of us reanting a hotel conf room, bringing in an auctioneer and lots and lots (did I say yet...a lot?) of beer. :)

Initial strategies tended to almost universally involve naming players you didnt necessarily "want" but wouldnt feel too bad about getting for $1. The general trend, was to try and get everyone else to spend their money first, fast and furious.

As for trying to "rank" who did how well thus far....we'll really have to wait until about week 7, to have any real idea. Even then, a key injury could turn it around 180 degrees. (I say week 7, because thats after the cap-credit goes away for drops. F/A gets much tougher, when you pay for the F/A but dont see cap relief from the dropped roster occupant.)

I'm showing that there are only 9 open spots left with no one currently up for bid. Teams with spots still open:

Butthead 1
Goatlocker 1
wazaap_guy 3
Beezer 4

How should we handle nominations the rest of the way? I don't really want to put 9 players up at once since bidding would be limited, so I'd prefer that each of us put up 1 player and that player is up until either 8 hours elapses or all owners post "pass" (GL won't have to since he's away and I only show him with $1 anyway so he can't increase a bid). That should allow us to finish today. Thoughts?

Let's talk draft strategies now that we're done...

Good auctions are more knowledge-intensive than drafts in that a draft situation only requires you to choose the best player available out of the pool of available players at that time, whereas an auction requires you to know about EVERY player that comes up for bid.

Therefore, I started by taking a guess at which 192 players would be drafted. Then I assigned a dollar value to each player based on assumptions about how much money would be held back for free agency by each team.

With this list, I could then figure out a budget that would give me solid performers at each position, a decent bench, and money left over for roster moves. I used this budget and my $ values during the draft to decide whom to bid on. I tried to buy every player at a discount to my expected value but close to my budget range so I would maximize player value.

What I did right:

- I used my own method of determining player value instead of assigning a set amount of money for every point like most methods do, and it seemed to mirror actual bid values very well to minimize $ inflation or deflation during the draft. I feel this gave me a HUGE edge in figuring out who was a value play and who wasn't.

- I passed on the top 3 RBs on my board even though my number told them they were a great value because it would have tied up money at other positions and blown my budget. I was able to grab my #4 guy on the board at a significant discount to the top 3 and used those funds to get a better #3 RB for my flex position.

What I screwed up:

- I missed badly on the number of WRs drafted on the low side, so my numbers said that every receiver not named TO went for too much money. When I corrected for this after the draft finished, I saw that prices actually matched my value extremely well.

- I thought more money would be held back than actually was, so that contributed to my thinking that prices were too high and bound to drop. Hopefully this will work to my advantage since YR and I have almost half the available cap space in the league.

As far as strategy during the draft went, I didn't drive a price up intentionally at all - every bid I made I would have taken with no issues. I didn't trust my self to know exactly when to stop so I didn't play around with that.

My projections currently show Goatlocker, youngroman, and Frick as the three strongest teams not counting my own, assuming GL can survive with no cap space, YR can leverage his money to upgrade and pick up players, and Frick can get fair value for one of his RBs to upgrade the rest of his roster. There definitely aren't any perfect teams that are a prohibitive favorite, including my own.

Beezer, I like your rankings alot more than my own! I have my team in the middle of the pack, but that pack if really tight. As in most years of Football, injuries will play the most significant part of the outcome.

Teams like mine that paid a large amount for a RB will hopefully be able to recover from an injury prior to week 6, but that could also depend on when the breakouts of this year become apparent.

WR went for a little bit of above my average value. But I obviously weight RB a lot higher. Part of this is my draft strategy, in my experience WR, other than the top 7 or 8, are pretty streaky. You might get a 100+ yards and a score or two, but the next week zip.

RBs tend to be more steady producers. Granted this could lead my team to losing all most every week, but still having one of the highest point totals.

QBs I thought went for way to much money. With passing TDs only worth 4 pts and only starting 1 QB Manning was the only truly great QB out there. I don't like Culpepper with out Moss, and McNabb without TO. After those 3 I saw a pretty large drop-off. Actually this could be the difference in the league this year, who ever got a cheap QB that breaks out, i.e. Rothllsiglkjer, could have a great team.

I only hope that Manning II or Harrington has a monster year. Manning has the skills and Harrington has the offensive weapons around him. My main scare is that Harrington gets benched and I am not able to pick-up Garcia, granted Garcia is a huge injury concern, but I was suprised one of the teams didn't take a late flyer on him.

first: this was my first auction draft.

before the draft I made a list of how much money I am willing to spend on each roster-spot. I also decided that if I get acceptable players beyond that value that I bet higher on others (Priest). I initially ranked my players by their 3-year averages and moved them up or down a bit according to their current situation and projections.

I stayed away of the initial QB, RB and WR-run where from my point of view real good talent went for way too much money (look at all those WR except TO). after getting Fred Taylor, Jake Plummer and Michael Vick I had too much money left so I took a flier on Priest. I got him at a lower price than I had projected (57 vs. 60).

it was interesting that at the end of the draft the values of QB and WR were really low. when I compare these picks to Vick/Plummer it seems to me that I paid too much for them. I see a lot of steals in the last third of the draft. the season will show us the real deal.

I also tried to force other managers to bid higher on some players. I paid for that strategy with Bruce and Toomer. I thought both would go much higher than I got them. at this price both players were good value to me, but with that much money still in the bank these were the 2 spots I would do over and spend a little bit more to get more consistent talent with more upside potential.

with $43 left I should have a shot on the top emergers this season. I was good at this last year and I am trying to repeat myself. looking at other rosters it will get really hard for them to be able to get some new talent without giving up one of their better players. I see a few teams with no active K or TE in some weeks.

my projections show goatlocker, beezer, kev and THK in the group that will be my main competition on my way to the championship.

last note: I think the draft brings you into the playoffs and the pickups throughout the year bring you the championship. be prepared!

THK - using my projections for starters only, your team ranks #1.

General Question

The waiver process is set by injuries. Are other FA pick-ups allowed each week?

Too bad we need those pesky backups! ;-) Backup RB and QB are my problems. My WR situation, TE, K and D are OK...

With a cap of $180; I like my team a lot.
