0 Subject: RIFC AAA#1 Draft Discussion

Posted by: Trip
- Sustainer [13961611] Wed, Aug 10, 2005, 22:09

Let's roll. Use this thread for general discussion. Please do not post anything else in the sign-up thread.

RIFC AAA#1 Draft

There will not be a clock enforced until the 19th, and it will be turned off on the weekends. Once we do begin the draft there will be a 6 hour time limit. Depending on how we progress this time limit may need to be shortened. If you will not have access to the draft for a significant period of time, please let everyone know, and leave a queue with someone if possible.

I will begin a rationale thread after we have completed 2 rounds.

I copied the following from the RIFC thread. Am I correct in assuming that we are following the same rules (note the scoring for IDP offensive points)and lineups? I thought that it would be nice to have it posted here. Please let me know if there are objections, and I will delete the post.

I (Guru) have decided to make the following ruling regarding point scoring.

Offensive players (QB, RB, WR, TE, K) will not earn points defined for IDP (i.e., tackles, turnovers, etc.) However, if an offensive player scores a touchdown on a defensive play, he will be awarded 6 points. Of course, offensive players will also earn punt/kick return yardage.

IDP (DL, LB, DB) will not earn points for offensive plays, except that punt/kick return yardage and all touchdowns will be scored for IDP.

There are several reasons:
1. With the possible exception of the occasional "wrong way" TD, the Fanball system should process points this way automatically.

2. There are typically very few players who actually line up both ways. Most "wrong way" points would be random and not strategic. For example, you won't draft Randy Moss thinking that he is likely to make a few tackles following interceptions.

3. Allocating points for all TDs eliminates any need to define whether the TD resulted from an offensive or defensive play. TDs are also easier to notice, and if a manual adjustment is required, it would probably be detected quickly.

4. Tracking "wrong way" stats would introduce a systematic administrative burden on both the Commissioner and on all league managers. It is doubtful whether this burden would produce a meaningful shift in points, but for any close games, it would induce an obligation for a significant manual review.

5. Crediting all points both ways is not the industry standard. Frankly, the use of IDP is not the industry standard either. But it does not appear that this stance at all conflicts with normal practice.

I will amend the scoring rules to clarify this.

Priority Claiming
All free agents (any players not on a current roster) are subject to a weekly claiming process at noon on Wednesday. Following the first 6 weeks of the season, the priorities will reset weekly based on the reverse of W/L percentage. After that, priorities will not be reset. Throughout the season, when a player is claimed (either via "free agent priority claim" or a waiver claim), the claiming team moves to the end of the claiming priority list.

Starting at 1:00pm on Wednesday, all free agents may be picked up by any team "first come, first served" without any change in priority status.

When a player is dropped from a roster, the player will go on waivers for 48 hours. At the end of the 48 hour period, if any team has placed a claim on the player, the team with the highest claiming priority will receive the player. If no claims are submitted, the player becomes a free agent at that time. If a player is dropped within 48 hours of his game freeze, he may not be claimed until the following week's free agent claiming process.

Starting five minutes prior to the scheduled start of each NFL game, no player in that game may be dropped, regardless of whether the player is an active or bench player.

Schedule
13 week round robin
Doubleheaders all weeks 1-13 (play each team twice)
Single elimination playoffs, weeks 14-16

Trade deadline
The trade deadline is 11:30pm EST on November 11.

Playoffs
8 teams
Top 6 W/L records are seeded 1-6
Top remaining total points are seeded 7-8
Teams with equivalent W/L records are seeded based on head-to-head first, then total points
Bracket is fixed (no reseeding after each round)

Players at the primary skill positions (QB, RB, WR) are frozen for the playoffs. Team defenses are also frozen, since they are not subject to injury uncertainty. Other positions are eligible for injury-replacement add/drop/claim transactions only.

Specifically, players in the other slots (TE, PK, IDP) may only be replaced if they are designated as questionable or worse on the NFL injury report. This allowance does not apply to any player who was designated questionable or worse for the week 13 game (the final regular season game).

Thus, you cannot add or drop a QB, RB, WR, or team Def after the week #13 freeze, period. You can only drop someone else if that player was designated as "Probable" or better for week 13, and "Questionable" or lower at some point thereafter. If one of those players is dropped, he can only be replaced by a player fulfilling the same position. (LB and DB will be considered the same position for this purpose.)

Sat, Aug 06, 2005, 12:13 Post 184 lists the updated rules, adjusted for the scoring eligibility outlined in post 183. Those changes are the only substantive changes, although the wording was amended in several other places for better clarity.

I still have not decided on the deadline for challenging a prior game score.

Loki, we will be following the RIFC league's rules no matter what they decide. Here is a link to the rules for that league as set up in Fanball.

http://rotoguru1.com/footdata/RIFC2005-rules.pdf

Our rules should match this exactly. I believe that I have reconciled all of the discrepancies which youngroman pointed out, but please review to see if you can find anything else.

Never took a QB first round before but couldn't really distinguish between the next 10 RB's so I took what I perceive to be a value pick??? I know I won't get any of the next 10 RB's either but #15 in line will drop to me.

Funny that you mention it because I was trying to come up with a word that would mean it takes the whole league to keep the draft moving along. Participative was the best my tired self could come up with. I am debating what draft position to take in my own qualifier league before going to bed.

AAA#1 analysis: I like getting McCallister with the 8th pick. That could be a coup along the lines of the EuroGurupies getting LeBron 9th in RIHC.

Why can't there be drafts every day? I'll bet there are in heaven.

I did so because I had him the last two years and am definitely tired of waiting for him to live up to the hype- Yes I know the Saints are supposed to run more again this year, like last year, like the year before LOL. Could be the coup de gras (not Mardi) rather than the coup de LaBron.

Guys, you can go ahead and put up rationales whenever you want (that is, go ahead and put them up out of order). Just throw up placeholders for the spots before yours and I'll move those rationales in when posted by those managers.

In order words, we need not put up rationales in the order drafted so long as there are placeholders for the skipped rationales.

Guys, from now on if you cannot fill in your rationale, please place a placeholder. Pancho and Coyotes, you guys are up.

If rationales are not posted by the time I am up, I will put in placehoders as well as my rationales.

They don't have to be too detailed. I think the main focus should be on strategy, not player analysis (especially in the early rounds), but feel free to add anything which helped you determine your selection. I would prefer a quick sentence posted in a timely manner over a detailed analysis which is 2 weeks too late.

Pancho - you blew by coldwater w/o placing a placeholder for his rationale for 1.09. The rest are out of sync. PD & I can juggle out of place rationales, but we have to have a spot to put them in. We can't create new entries.

ok, i think this is the right thread. promize has sent me an email asking me to pick for him and it appears that he is up. So, let me check his info before I pick. in the future, if i could get an email from trip or someone else when it is his turn, that would help move things along as I've not followed this draft at all.

ok, I picked. Promize's queue was all used up and there wasn't an adequate player in the positions he asked me to look for, so I went with what I thought was the best player on the board. I didn't have a cheat sheet or anything, so I hope I didn't miss anyone glaring that I should have taken. I am not prepared to draft right now, but from what I've seen this guy is going to be very good.

REf give me an e-mail and I'll be letting you know when he is up every other round. To help you Promize has picked 2 RB's Davis and Suggs, 2 WR's R.Williams and Chambers, and Culpepper at QB so he doesn't have a glaring weakness to cover with this choice.

I want to thank everyone. The pace on this draft has been incredible. I am proposing that the time limit not be enforced until Monday. I have a busy weekend myself, and it might be a good idea for everyone to pay attention to this weekends games(if you don't have the NFL network, please call your cable provider-they show all of the preseason games). There have been surprisingly few injuries so far this year, but there are still many jobs in question. I will revise the schedule so that it matches the schedule that the main league is using (post 310 ).

I agree Trip; no need to enforce a time limit when it's moving so well.(I almost wish it would slow down so some of these position battles will be resolved before I pick).I've got a Queue for loki and his cell # so I can pick for him if need be.

We're moving along a lot faster than I expected, particularly since you guys are probably updating your sheets as often as I am (every few picks, it seems!).

If we keep up the pace, there seems to be no reason for a hard time limit.

Trip - no time limit over the weekend is ok. if only there would be something like the NFL network here in europe. at the moment there is not even 1 contract signed between the NFL and an european TV station for regular season games. I can only hope the best that they sort all these things out and I can enjoy the season opener in 3 weeks.

AP - Chargers Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates has agreed to terms on a new six-year contract. Additional terms of the contract were not disclosed. Gates will sign the contract Tuesday afternoon.

It still appears he'll have to serve the 3 game suspension and will miss the 1st game of the regular season. Those guys really know how to play hardball in San Diego.

Promize,

Your link could lead to a bit of confusion as it makes the assumption that teams start 1 DL and 2 Flex IDPs. This is not the case. Here is the breakdown from the 2005 RIFC Rules.

Roster
1 QB
2 RB
3 WR
1 TE
1 K
1 Team def
1 DL
1 LB
1 DB
1 additional IDP (flex)
8 bench
21 Total

Thanks for the breakdown though.

You can post your rationales in this thread and a moderator will move them over.

Just do your best, I would prefer a couple of quick sentences on time than a dissertation a week late. Again, I recommend that you write them up as you pick, as it can help you make your decision.

11.13 Tyrone Calico, WR, Tenn

I planned on picking WRs in rounds 9-11. Calico is a chancey pick as he is coming off knee surgery, but he runs a 4.34 40 and will start opposite Bennett who will draw double coverage. I think that McNair will find him in the red zone often.

11.12 Terrence McGee, DB, Buf

I was planning on being able to wait until the 13th or 14th round for this pick, but panicked when I saw Harrison and Polamalu go off the board as well as some other DBs. Since I didn't have any players looking like a must-pick, I figured I would lock up the top IDP player in this scoring format according to my numbers.

McGee's IDP stats would slot him at about 14th, barely making him a starter in this league. Once you add in Pro Bowl-caliber kickoff returns, though, his value goes very high. Last year he had 1370 yards and 3 TDs in return duty, which added to his stats accounted for over 190 points in this system, about 30 ahead of second place. Also he was a mark of consistency, never scoring less than 7 PPG in any game last season, with 4 games over 15 points.

I don't think his return numbers will be quite as good this year, and his tackles may slip a bit, but even that will still likely leave him tops at DB (and IDP for that matter). So this is a pretty safe pick that should give me an edge against every opponent.

11.14 - Adam Vinatieri, K, NE

#1 Kicker in my book. I usually like to wait on Kickers, but I feel that it is well past time for him to be taken, and expect several more to fall before I would be up again. (Didn't happen, but I still think this was a value pick.)

12.01 - Joey Harrington, QB, Det

If Joey can survive his first few games with his confidence intact, this could be the year for the Lions offense to explode. Like Vinatieri in the pick before, I think this is an excellent value pick. I wouldn't feel very confident with any of the other remaining QBs as a backup. Sean Taylor was also considered here, but there is a chance in hell that he could make it back to me. Not so with Vinatieri and Harrington.
