0 Subject: RIFC AAA#1 Draft Rationales

Posted by: Trip
- Sustainer [13961611] Sun, Aug 14, 2005, 15:32

This thread will be for managers in RIFC AAA#1 to provide the rationale for each pick.

Here are the ground rules:
1. Only managers in this league should post here. If you want to provide feedback (either from other league managers, or from those not in the league), put it in the discussion thread. (Non-conforming discussion in this thread will be deleted.)

2. Try to keep the pick rationales in the same order as the draft. We'll attempt to keep this thread 2 rounds behind the actual draft. With the lag, most comments should not have an impact on the draft in progress. However, if there are aspects of your pick that you feel need to be kept under wraps, feel free to protect that information. In particular, please avoid mentioning the names of any players who are still undrafted at that time of the post.

Please post your comments at the time you make your pick. For example, you should post your comments for your round 1 pick when you make your round 3 selection. If you are not ready to post at that time, then, create a "placeholder" so that the next person is able to go ahead in sequence. When your post is ready, simply post it in the draft discussion thread and a moderator can copy it over.

If your rationale is due and intervening placeholders have not been inserted, please insert them before posting your rationale.

3. Once the draft is over, each manager is also encouraged to provide a general draft recap, at which time you can discuss your overall strategy, mention any undisclosed factors, comment on what worked out well and what didn't, etc.

The general format should be:
1.01 Priest Holmes - RB, KC

1.01 LaDainian Tomlinson - RB, SD

Drafting this early you have to take a RB. LT is as solid as they come. The only question I had was if I should have taken the #1 pick. I went up and down the draft order trying different scenarios. Ultimately I decided to go with a person I enjoy watching on a team I like to root for.

1.02 Shaun Alexander , RB, Sea

Not to make the same mistake I made last year, I also had to take a running back. Since LT was off the board, it came down to three backs, all which would have been a good pick here. After weighing the strenghts of the three, I came to the conclusion that ALexander was my pick.

1.03 Priest Holmes, RB, KC

I selected to have the 3rd pick because I knew I get one out of LT, Shaun or Priest and I am fine with all of them. Priest may have the most upside out of these 3 if he can stay healthy all year and post numbers like 2002 and 2003.

word is that he should be fully recovered by the start of the regular season and will get his usual amount of plays. he is the #1 in KC and as long as they have Trent Green and his passing game, their opponents have to defend both the running and the passing game and cannot concentrate fully on stopping Priest.

Priest, prove me that you are worth this pick or I'll never see you on any of my teams again.

1.04 Edgerrin James, RB, IND

It's my belief that Edgerrin will keep his part of the triple threat going in Indy this year. That offense shows no indication of slowing down and he's the RB in that monster attack. I just hope he gets more chances to score a few more TDs when they get down near the goal line.

1.05 Willis McGahee, RB, Buf

While I'm doubtful that McGahee's claims to get 2000 yards will be realized this year, the removal of Travis Henry from the Bills picture makes it clear that McGahee will be getting many touches this year, and 1500 yards and a touchdown/game is certainly within reach.

Running back that can run as well as catch the ball made him the most versatile pick at #6. I did think about nabbing Manning at this point, but since the league seemed to be going with the RB route quickly, couldn't resist.

1.08 Deuce McAllister, RB, NO

I like drafting 8th, would have gone higher if a slot was available but...;I debated going 14th but was concerned about getting a decent running back,so I was delighted when Deuce fell to me.
Duece has fallen short of expectations the last couple of years but this is a contract year and in the past I have done well grabbing guys with something to prove for a new deal. Haslett has said he plans on running more this year and both he and QB Brooks are on the hot seat and should make an extra effort to get the team going this year.
I also looked hard at Portis and Green and even Culpepper at this slot but with the discounted passing TDs,Green's propensity to fumble and the fact that Portis has yet to show me much outside of Denver's running back Heaven it was a pretty easy choice.

1.09 Kevin Jones, RB, Det coldwater coyotes

Dillon, Rudi or Kevin Jones...not any easy decision. Little between them. I tend to favor RBs who improved at the end of the previous season and Jones had some great late games. He has the greatest upside and hopefully it will show this year.

1.10 Rudi Johnson- I would have preferred a back with more pass catching opportunities, but Rudi will touch the rock about as much as any back in the league. he may be the most underrated back of the past two seasons.

Since Manning was gone I decided to stay with the RB theme. Thought about Culpepper here, but was a bit worried since he wouldn't have Moss to throw to. It came down to either Lewis or Portis. Went with Lewis since I had inury concerns about Portis.

1.12 Clinton Portis, RB, Was

I took the 12 hole in this draft primarily because I figured that Manning and either Culpepper or Moss would go along with 9 running backs, so I'd still get a top-10 back here and a top-15 on the way back.

Although it didn't quite work that way, I still got a top-10 back on my board with Portis. Portis is still really young and now has a full season under his belt with Gibbs and the Washington offense. At worst, he should be in the top 12 barring a serious injury so he was the safe pick here IMO.

1.13 Corey Dillon, RB, NE

My strategy was to take a running back with my first 2 picks if Payton Manning was not available. Dillon was the highest ranked RB on my charts, and assuming he does not show the effects of his large number of carries over the past few seasons, he should put up good fantasy numbers.

1.14 - Julius Jones, RB, Dal

I am as far as you can get from being a Dallas fan, and would have selected any of the RBs who went ahead of Jones, that being said, it may be a good thing that Jones fell to me as my bias towards Dallas would have kept me from selecting him over players who don't project as well as Jones does. I also considered Curtis Martin and LaMont Jordan with this pick but thought that this pick offered me the most upside, with the least amount of downside. I have concerns about the durability of the remaining players in Jones' tier of running backs.

2.01 - Randy Moss, WR, Oak

I chose the #14 position so that I would be able to snag my 2 starting RBs and then focus elsewhere. That strategy flew out the window when Moss was still available. While I was hoping that Moss would be selected before this pick, again it may be fortunate that my selection was dictated by the managers in front of me. I feel that the difference between Moss and the WR who would be available to me with my next pick and the available running backs available at the time to those who would be there with my next pick justified his selection. If that criteria is not enough, the reports out of Oakland so far this year are amazingly good. Let's hope he is finally growing up. His teammates have nothing but praise for him as well.

2.02 Ahman Green, RB, GB

As my 2nd pick a running back made the most sense. Green was ranked as a top 10 RB in many of the cheat sheets that I reviewed. Who am I to argue with the "experts?" Written reports have also been good. As with my first pick, if he does not begin to show his age, he should put up good numbers.

2.03 Tiki Barber, RB, NYG

I had Tiki #9 on my board at RB so he was a no-brainer pick for me. I started with two RBs last year in RQFL #2 (Edge/Rudi) and despite a complete WR meltdown I still made the playoffs since I could count on 30pts/week from the RBs if not more.

I didn't see a good reason to go at Culpepper or Holt at this point which were the only other players worth mentioning due to the hunger for good RBs in these leagues.

Lots of ways I could have gone here. Still considered Culpepper here, but once I saw QBs weren't being taken on the way back up I figured there would be plenty to choose from later on. So I decided it was either a WR or another RB. It was obvious there would be few RBs to choose from so figured I would take another one and keep the pressure on everyone else to take another one too. Being a Rams fan I decided to not take the highest on my ranking chart but rather take someone I would be rooting for anyway during the year.

With the run on RBs continuing I felt I had to get another at this spot.Jordon has tremendous upside and will likely be an every down back which couldn't be said of most of the remaining RBs.However, the fact that Culpepper was still available made this a tough decision.Other than a brief consideration of Westbrook,he was the only other player I considered at this spot.

I wanted Jordan primarily because I think he is more durable than Westbrook and having Westbrook as your #1 RB is frightening- While he is healthy I think Westbrook will put first tier RB numbers but for how long? There really was no other choice as I needed to pick a RBand Westbrook was the 19th RB drafted.

I wanted to get a top QB with this pick, knowing that with only one QB starting it's important to have a top guy. Green throws for a lot of touchdowns and a lot of yards. He's also very durable, so he'll be slinging just about every week.

I decided to take an early chance and draft one of the roookies at this time. I wasn't real sold on Bennett or Taylor with this choice and I think Gruden is going to make a concerted effort to run the ball more in Tampa this year and Cadillac is the guy to help out there. He's also going to get the ball in goal line situations which make him a little more versatile IMO. I also preferred he was in for the entire camp and practicing which at least gets him on the same page with everyone else. It's always a turkeys shoot with young RBs anyway.

2.12 Donovan McNabb, QB, PHI

as usual the RBs are falling of the board quicker and quicker every year. since there is no RB left that is worth a pick at the moment, I looked at the talent left and decided to take a QB over a WR. the problem was that Daunte was already off the board and there is a larger hole behind McNabb than behind a WR (Holt, Horn, Johnson) at this point. I should get one of those WR with my next pick.

McNabb will have another great season as the 3rd best QB in our scoring system. despite losing Pinkston through injury and TO to xxx (enter hold-out, injury, Falcons or something else here) he will have plenty of talented receivers left. and additionally McNabb wants to prove another year that his Eagles are ready to get a ring.

still no 2nd RB in the range here, so a WR was next on the block. With my last pick I considered Holt and Horn and I am happy to get Horn as the anchorman of my receiving corps. he was a solid contributor to the Saints the last few years and there is no reason out there to think that will not continue. pencil in 90-100 catches for 1300+ yards and 10 TD and you know what I am speaking of.

I hope you guys are leaving a 2nd RB for me because with some of you picking a 3rd one in round 4 I am a little worried that there may be no real starter left and I have to gamble on a back that is in a battle for playing time. or should I wait until the first starter gets down and be the lucky one. well thats not the best option. that worked last year but I bet this will not happen again this year.

3.01 Tory Holt

I was looking at WR for this spot unless one of the top 3 QBs was here. I was thrilled to have Holt available for me but was not surprised to see TO, The Cancer, still available. This was an easy choice for me. The STL schedule against the pass is looking really good and at the time of my pick The Cancer just got a week of vacation from training camp. Several people may have taken a collective sigh of relief when I drafted TO here to keep them from having to have a few anxious moments over him, but there really wasn't another choice IMO for talent and fppg. Sure the risks are high for another temper tantrum or two, but when the paychecks are for real money and not $500/game, Terrell & Rosenhaus will want them, not just headlines.

I liked Burleson & Walker well enough, but they're not on the talent level of Owens (yet anyway) and talent wins championships, not tantrums.

Was looking to take a WR the whole way with this pick. Considered, then abandoned TO, since the Eagles might make him sit just to show him who writes his checks. Considered Wayne quite a bit, but I never really liked the way Manning throws the ball around a lot (worked last year, but with the defense they had, he had to). My own cheetsheet (tweaked for this league) had Walker as the #3 WR (behind Moss & Owens) so to find him here in the third round was a gift.
Walker should be at, or surpass, his 1382 yard, 12 TDs last year and their initial schedule should help him achieve that with a nice starting 4-5 games.

It was my intention to get into the top 5 of as many categories as possible. I failed on RBs(though I did get 2 top 15) and 4 top QBs were already gone. I had Bulger ahead of Green at #4, so it was an obvious choice. I'm hopeful for good, consistent numbers from Bulger.

I had been targeting Bulger from about 5 picks back and actually thought he might make it to me. Once he was off the board I needed to address WR since you can start 3. Burleson isn't my idea of a stud WR, but without Moss in MN he should be able to have a breakout year as long as he isn't overwhelmed by the extra coverage. I thought about passing on Burleson and trying for another RB at this point, but really felt the need to get at least 1 WR on my roster that would be more than just wishful thinking.

So far, my draft has largely mirrored last year's. Last year, my pick of Steve Smith and trade for Santana Moss at nearly the same spot ended up being the costliest picks of the season.

Again this season, I saw a lot of good WRs - Darrell Jackson and Roy Williams particularly stood out in my mind - but I decided that if Tony fell to this spot that I would take him and lock him up, so I did.

Tony's been the #1 pick at TE in fantasy football longer than this site has been online. He hasn't shown any signs of slowing down and KC continues to show no signs of signing a true #1 receiver, so TG to TG will continue to be a frequent sight on Sundays.

There were several running backs considered with the following 2 picks, but I had decided well before that running backs would be taken with these picks, as it is extremely doubtful that any other starting running back would make it back to me in the 5th round and there will be plenty of starting QB and WR available to me with my next pick.

Both Dunn and Barlow have been fairly durable in the past, have had good camps, and all reports that I could find on them have been positive. They are not without warts, but they have had less negative press than other players considered.

Darrell Jackson was staring me in the face, begging me to take him. I went back and forth on this pick a lot. However, it came down to these thoughts:

- WR pool was as deep as I'd ever seen it, so I could get 3 decent ones by round 8 more than likely
- Arrington was the last of the top 20 backs on my board and over 1 PPG ahead of the next guy on my list still available
- JJ's was the only back last year to rush for over 100 yards against USC and 2,000 for the season in college and was very consistent in doing so
- Great injury protection and trade bait once my bye weeks are done

We'll see what happens, but no buyer's remorse yet.

Drafting a rooking RB is always risky, IMO, but if they guy ever reports to camp there seems to be a tremendous potential. The Bears like to run, and with the QB situation in Chicago muddled for a bit they will be relying on guys to crank out yards between the tackles. Benson looks like solid 1100 yard, 10 TD kind of guy.

Living in Dallas, I know how infatuated Parcell's has became with the guy and he's going to find ways to get him the ball. Couple that with the aging Dallas QB's lack of mobility & need to dump the ball off in stressful situations, and I think Witten will see loads of opportunities this year.

I needed my #2 WR here took Boldin over Hines because I think ARI will have a more dynamic offense this year. I liked what I saw from him at the end of last year. The question about him is his durability I hope he can put that behind him.

5.01 Carson Palmer

Qb’s were going fast and I didn’t think Palmer would last until my next pick. I wanted a top 10 QB and he was the last one on my list still available. My other option here was to pick Hines Ward and lock up my 3 WR's.

shortly after picking Michael Bennett I read that Hines Ward ended his holdout and I was hoping to get him on the turn back with this pick. he slipped through Bags picks but not through wolfer's. only 1 pick short: damn.

back to plan B: Darrell Jackson was the 2nd WR on my list. if Hasselbeck continues to throw the ball well he should see 80-90 balls for 1200+ yards and 8 TD.

with this pick I finished my initial strategy of getting 1QB, 2RB and 2WR in the first 5 rounds. now I need to tweak my rankings to get some value at WR, TE, D and LB with my next picks. lets see who is falling.

Funny to see two AZ wide receivers go this close together, but I guess we'll see which one turns out to be Warner's favorite or if they both get their fair share of balls. They both have the talent and I was happy to pick Larry up with this pick. We'll see if he's worth it later I guess.

5.12 Michael Vick

I've been a big fan of Vick since he arrived at VaTech, but I've always laughed at the folks that select him in the draft ridiculously early. However, when I looked at the board for this pick, Vick stool out like a sore thumb, and I just wasn't excited by the receiver pool since it seemed like all the guys I targeted on my board were gone (Ward, Jackson, Driver).

I have Vick at #5 on my QB board and he's the type of player that will win 2-3 games himself. I'm hoping another season with Mora Jr. and the WCO will help him to reach his potential. At worst, I'll get fifth-round value barring a major injury, but the payoff could be huge if he can harness that talent.

When I made my selection in the last round I knew that with these picks I would be taking a QB and WR. I had hoped that Kerry Collins would slip this far and thought that Vick might as well. There are still some good throwers on the board, but it will be interesting to see how many make it back to me. Denvers' easy passing schedule was the deciding factor with this pick.

6.01 - Plaxico Burress, WR, NYG

Just as I thought I had a shot at Collins, I missed my shot at a QB wide receiver combo again when Lelie was taken 3 picks ahead of me. I haven't decided if that is a good thing or not. After Lelie was picked I had my WR choices narrowed down to Burress, Evans and Roy Williams. Burress is the more proven of the three but doesn't have the upside of Evans and Williams, but again, I went with strength of passing schedule to make my decision.

I feel that from this point the draft starts getting more interesting. I currently have 2Rb's, 1QB, 1WR. There was a temptation to take another RB, but nothing stood out as a must have compared to needing another solid WR. I saw a handful of WRs like Buress, Evans, Porter and figured they would start going after me so I might as well take one. Plummer throws for Mega yards and Lelie will be his main target.

After putting off selecting WRs as long as reasonable, it was time to start filling roster spots. Evans stood out on the board as a guy who has potential to be top 20 while being a relative shoe-in to be a top 30 receiver. If he can maintain the pace he had the last half of 2004 this will be a good pick, but it should be solid at worst.

I was still considering taking another WR here and possibly would have taken Evans had he still been there, and looked very hard at Porter. In the end I decided to shake things up a bit and take a D. Really hate having a marginal D so decided rather than take what was left over I would take the top. I figured it would also make others start looking toward D now even if they were hoping to put it off longer, and that would leave me with more WRs to choose from later.

not a fan of the hype here. so Shockey it was. He looks great in camp, some are remembering his rookie season. if only can show that he is a better QB. I'm also no fan of him. for me he is only Peyton's little brother.

He's got a couple of quality WR around him and a really talented RB in Deuce. As long as they play together as a team and don't turn the ball over too much, they should have a productive season.

7.12 Deion Branch, WR, NE

The plan since taking Vick at 5.12 was to pick up WRs with the next 3 picks, but I have to admit I was hoping Brooks would fall to this spot as I had him as a top 10 QB on my board and I wasn't seeing a lot of difference in WRs at this point.

Since that didn't happen, Branch jumped out as the choice here. It isn't often you get to take the Super Bowl MVP at WR in the seventh, but of course the Pats are no ordinary team. They spread the ball around and you can't count on any one receiver to see the ball every game.

I'm hopeful that with Patten gone and David Terrell playing at his David Terrell-like level that Branch will get a few more balls than last year. 900 yards and a half-dozen TDs sounds about right as a minimum and there's a slight chance he could do better, so I'll take that with the 96th overall pick.

I went b2b on quarterbacks with my picks to make sure I covered the position for the long haul. Being near one end of the draft order has it's consequenses when it comes to depleting the number of choices you have to chose from at a position (they can change so fast from one round to the next). I am very comfortable with either of my choices at quarterback and that is one of the reasons for picking Byron now.

In a league of this depth it can be a fatal mistake to lose your QB for several games due to injury at any juncture in the season. I didn't just want to cover the position for the "bye" week. I wanted to make sure I had a quality backup in case of injury. I believe I've done that. I can also play matchups should I choose to do so.

Far too many expectations were put on him last year (especially with a crappy offense in general), but with Ramsey coming into his second year I believe the opportunities for Moss to make plays will increase. I have him projected at anywhere between 800-1000 yards and 6-8 TDs, which isn't bad at this point in the draft. Anything more would be gravy.

9.12 - Keyshawn Johnson, WR, Dal

I had targeted several different directions to go with this pick - the problem was that all of them went off the board before this pick. After finding no interest in a trade, I figured it was too early to take a starter at an empty position, too early for backup QB or TE, so I took the highest rated WR and RB on my board.

Positives are that he should be a solid pick, he plays for my favorite team, and he was a former #1 draft pick. But I'm not excited by this pick at all. Definitely my least favorite pick to this point.

9.13 - Justin McCareins, WR, Ten

McCareins will be Pennington's second look after Laverneus Coles, and I believe he will also be returnig punts. Therefore I picked him as my 3rd WR.

9.14 - Randy McMichael, TE, Mia

At this point in the draft, even if McMichael is suspended for 4 games, he is worth the pick here. I can't believe he made it back to me. I guess everyone else realizes how bad the dolphins offense is going to be this year.

2.09 Culpepper, Daunte QB MIN

If I remember right, most of the good RB's had already been swooped up. I didn't want to be hurt with a weak QB and didn't see him coming back to me in the 3rd round.

3.06 Lee Suggs, RB, Cle

At this point I thought he was a steal. Even on a horrible team, I am sure he was gonna be the work horse for the team. A young running back also. Of course my luck, he is injured in preseason.

4.09 Roy Williams, WR, Detroit

Fell in love with this guy last year. He brought me a bunch of points while he wasn't injured. About the only option for Joey to throw to me in my opinion. I expect good numbers from him again.

5.06 Chris Chambers

His projections looked pretty good and was I think the best option at the time on the boards. I'm not high on him, especially on a team of QB's that Miami has. Tough at times picking in the middle of the draft.

8.09 Carolina, Defense

I don't know, I've always been a big believer that the small catagories help you win leagues. Some teams put off picking Kickers, TE, Defense.. But when competition is good and league is big, these little catagories give you those 5 extra points you need to win.

9.06 - Brian Urlacher, LB, Chi

Was still in Phoenix, so REF/STL made this pick for me. Top notch IDP at Linebacker. His projection is 125 tackles (tk/assist). Can't beat that.
