Will we be posting rationales for our picks?
2
FRICK
ID: 3410101718 Tue, Aug 16, 2005, 13:42
I was going to leave it up to the league to decide. I would like to, but it is not mandatory.
We can probably just put them in this thread. I don't have the ability to go in and change posts, so they will probably end up out of order anyways.

I assume we'll wait a couple of rounds before we start rationales, correct?

Oh #$*), the draft actually started, huzaah. All kidding aside, I love drafting and football is my favorite sport.
Russelldl, yes normally we wait 2 rounds before making any comments about our selections, so you should post your thoughts on round 1 selections when you make your 3rd round pick.

when is the clock shut off for the night? if ever? I am back in town for good now so there should be no long delay from me. i am sorry about the delay in taking draft choises. i guess my buddy (who doesn't use rotoguru, that punk) didn't check for me. GRR! OH well. i am on deck! it's so exciting.
7
FRICK
ID: 3410101718 Tue, Aug 16, 2005, 23:50
The clock stops at 2AM EST and starts back up at 8AM.
Does anyone have a problem with this? If we reduce the amount of time each pick gets we can revisit the issue.

Kyle
ID: 367751 Wed, Aug 17, 2005, 00:57
I may have just gotten home, and i may still have "carlag" but from what i can see this is the draft order: 1. Russeldl 2. Greybear 3. Mike 4. Da Bomb 5. JTSERB 6. Frick 7. GolfFreak 8. Nerfherders 9. Kyle 10. Slackjawed Yokel 11. Letter J 12. Cressida 13. Smith32 14. s_R Now is there an 8 hour time limit between each pick or a half hour? I am confused by that since i have seen both in 2 seperate threads.
9
FRICK@Work
ID: 220211 Wed, Aug 17, 2005, 08:53
The time limit is currently 8 hours. If someone consistently times out, that person may go to a shorter timer.
Please ;eave a queue with someone if you are going to be gone and you are going to be up to pick soon.
Please feel free to ask for someone to take a queue.

I guess I will have to work around the whole clock issue. I don't have internet at home which means that by around 6:30 to 7:00 pm, I am Rotoguruless... To top this off, if the dead time is from 2am to 8am, this means 3am to 9am for me, which is a little insane. I am sure I can work something out and certainly do not object to leaving a queue for the later rounds, although I will hold off on doing so for a few more rounds.

FRICK@Work

The time of the clock stoppage can be changed if people want to change it.
My only concern is making sure that we get the draft done a couple of days before the start of the season.
Does anyone else want to change the times when the clock stops.
I think that the RIFC clock stops from 11PM to 7 AM.
I don't have a problem with this. The draft moved ok yesterday. I am just as much to blame, silly kids not going to bed.
The RIFC is also using a 6 hour clock. Please post your opinions.

working midnights sucks. hence the delay in my pick. from 10pm to 7am I'm offline and then I'm sleeping for a few hours in there. normally I'll leave a queue but honestly wasn't sure what I wanted to do for round 3 and wanted to see what happened. just letting everyone know so no one thinks I'm slacking off or anything

I didn't think this had its place in the "Rationales", so I want to post in here my deepest and most heart-felt congrats to Mike, for having a big set of you know what.
I believe that lots of pundits would agree with your pick and that T.O. is a great value pick (for his talent) at 3.03. I just don't think that I would have been able to deal with the anxiety brought on by his god-complex and his apparent resolve to destroy any bond there may still exist with the rest of his teammates... although I almost did take him. However, my TinkerBell pick precluded me from taking yet another "risky" guy so soon.
Wishing you all the best, except for the weeks that you will be facing me (of course), at which time I wish you absolutely no Sharpie, pom-pom or any other type of end zone celebrations!

You're assuming that TO will be on the field for most of the season. I think that it is going to be interesting which of TO's personalities wins, the one that wants the money, or the one that can't shut up and has to gloat. I see bad things for TO in the formal letter that the Eagles sent TO. While the Bucs set Keyshawn home with pay, I think the Eagles are going to send TO home and tell him see you in arbitration if you want this game check.
This could be the steal of the draft Mike, but there is some huge risk there.
On a side note, I would like to thank the 4 managers in front of me for taking the 3 players that I had slotted in for my round 2 pick.
26
mike
ID: 187181017 Thu, Aug 18, 2005, 15:25
trust me I know the risk. thought about it all last night at work. my thoughts though
-too much talent and value at round 3 to pass up -philly can't win without him and while not bending over for him will still put up with a lot -owens is a prick who wants to prove how important he is and I think that'll keep him on the field this year
yeah it's a risk but definitely one I feel comfortable taking

I'm okay with the clock as it stands right now.
This weekend I will be without internet access from Friday 5:30pm EST to sometime Sunday afternoon. Hopefully I get my next two picks in before then, but is anyone available to take a queue for me for that time period?
cressida - I should be around most the weekend. We pick kind of near one another, but I wouldn't read your mail until your pick, and if you leave a bunch of blank lines between picks in your queue, then the rest of your list won't be read at all.
And, I gotta agree with it being the right time to pick TO. I think the Eagles need him too much and he needs to play (not to mention the exposure), that I can't see them making him sit out more than a game.
29
FRICK@Work
ID: 220211 Thu, Aug 18, 2005, 15:53
I can also take queues this weekend. I am not planning on being out of town, but I'm sure that I will be with out internet access for awhile if the kiddies/wife want to go somewhere.

Congrats Mike on taking the risk, i must comend your ambition. I agree TO is a high risk pick but think of the rewards. another 1300 yard 13 TD season (If not more) is in the offing. Good Luck to Mr. Owens and i wish him a good adieu to the draft board. Now maybe he and Rosenhouse and disappear for a year like Ricky..
31
mike
ID: 187181017 Thu, Aug 18, 2005, 17:46
I'd like to state for the record that my pick of Mr. Owens is by no means an endorsement of his actions. It is all business and that's all, hehe
32
russelldl
ID: 63391814 Thu, Aug 18, 2005, 19:03
I think its a good pick also. i nearly took him. Certainly there's some inherent risk but realistically if the guy manages to keep himself from being suspended, he's going to be one of the top receivers again. He needs to be to get a big contract at the end of the year. And the Eagles need him to contribute to win. And as crazy as it sounds, he doesnt HAVE to talk to anyone on his team.
33
Greybear
ID: 47324128 Thu, Aug 18, 2005, 19:14
Russelldl, honestly, I wanted you to take him off the board so I could stop thinking about him... Thanks for nothing! Now I get to kick myself in the ass all season if he manages to stay on the field.

well, I almost took him, he was on my short list. how about you and I hope that we open tomorrow morning's newspaper and see that he beat up one of Andy Reid's kids. Sorry Mike, but I think this year fans are going to be very strongly divided: Those who have TO on their fantasy teams vs. Those who don't :)

we should try to keep the rationals in order, just for relative ease. If the owner doesn't want to put a rational right away then put a place holder and comeback and put it in

Sorry if I might have caused any delay tonight. I had a tough evening. If you all don't know I am leaving for college Saturday and it was the last evening i could spend time with the girlfriend. Tip for any ladies reading this, when your signifcant other is leaving for a while, don't close the evening with tears in your eyes saying "I have to go, I have to go." and run inside your house. It was tough indeed, and i don't think i was in my right mind 5 minutes ago when I drafted... Let's hope Crennel likes my choice. I would have prefer to have Fragile Freddie drop to my spot. (PIPE DREAM) Well good night all, I have a day of packing ahead of me. And do not fret, I will be able to check everyone's favorite site, RotoGuru! So DRAFT ON!

The red weeks are bye weeks.
Each team will meet once during the bye weeks and once during a non-bye week, except for weeks 4 & 10 were each team will play the same team.

Well guys, I'm going camping for the next couple of days. With 18 picks before my next pick, I don't think I'll be able to leave a reliable queue, while still getting a player that fits my teams needs. Besides, with it being the weekend and all, I don't think that the draft will get around to me anyways. If it does get back to me, I'll be back Sunday afternoon to make the pick.

What is everyone's impression of the draft so far? I expected this league to be very competitive, and I think the draft reflects that so far. I don't see too many big "reaches", and a lot of players I was hoping would slip have not and vice versa. Had I known that Aaron Brooks would make it to Rd 8, I wouldn't have taken Palmer when I did:) It will be fun to see how it all plays out.

I expected this league to be very competitive as well. Im a bit worried about Def players. Have not every had them before in a draft. And not sure when to draft them. Do think I drafted the Ravens abit early. But i swear Nerfherders & FRICK have camara's in my house they have drafted MY player alot. We must have the same cheatsheets. ;) But we have a nice speed of the draft.

I haven't played in a "AA" league before, so I was hoping maybe people wouldn't be taking it as seriously or be as prepared, but I've found the opposite. It's turned out to be just like the RIBC and RIHC where it's pointless to prepare much in advance of your pick because your top guys are never there when it gets to you. a good testament to the dedication of gurupies I suppose. Also, the draft has been going at a very brisk pace which is good.
I hadn't used defensive players either, so this'll be a learning experience to see where the points are coming from each week.

Hey all.
Seems to be going well so far. It at times seems like the whole draft grinds to a halt, only to pick up speed again. I must keep in mind that some of us don't have the luxury of sitting behind a desk with internet all day.
As for the picks themselves, I have to say that I have been surprised by how many defensive players have been taken so far, but I feel like most of you probably have a better grasp of what you are doing than I ; )
Should be a very interesting season.

Haha GolfFreak. I can also tell you what's in your refridgerator right now!
Yeah this draft has been very good so far no major hangups and everytime I check back it seems to be getting close to my pick. The only league I played last year was Serious Biz, and I missed the draft. So I'm trying to make up for it this year. So far most of my players have been there when my number was called. That either means I'm lucky, or that I'm picking players nobody else wants. We shall see!

Does anyone have a problem with reducing the clock down to 6 hours? We have gotten thru 8 rounds in a little over a week. The first game of the season is Sept 8th. I need to load all of the rosters and allow people time to check their rosters and time to process waivers.
Below is the running cumulative time that I recorded, based on the clock stopping from 11PM until 8AM EST
Down to six hours, but how will I manage! Those cummulative time stats are alarming to me. They make me look like a non-meticulous-compulsive-trigger-happy-go-with-your-gut-feeling freak!
Well, the cat's out of the bag... although I do feel like things are going well so far, which is what I thought last year until I had my a$$ handed to me and failed to make the playoffs : (
To seriously answer your question, I have no issue with tightening the clock as I think it would be nice to have some spare time to admire each other's rosters before the season starts.
Later, Grey

Greybear, I was going to ask if you ever weren't at work. I know you said that you only have access at work, but you and Letter_J have two of the lowest totals. GO HOME
I did not post this to blame anyone, I am just as much to blame as anyone else.
We need to start using queues more often if you know that you are going to be away for awile. I would like to thank JTSERB for posting his picks last night. I didn't see his post until after I had made my selection, but it wouldn't have changed my pick.
If you want their is a way to post "invisible text". Basically the font is the same color as the background and can only be seen by highlighting the text. If anyone would feel more comfortable doing this let me know and I'll post the directions. I am available for queues most times during the day, but evenings are more sparse until after the kids are in bed.
Unless someone posts something otherwise the clock drops to 6 hours after Russelldl's pick. This works out nice since it is the end of the round and still gives about 5 more hours max before it takes effect.

Frick,
When we (Grey and I) originally posted the fact that we did not have internet access at home, we were having problems with our landline at home(it seems that flooding caused some problems with the phone line). We now do have net access at home. A FYI so you do not think that we live at the office. :-)
However, both of us are endeavouring to move this draft along as quickly as possible (we discuss picks beforehand, possible scenarios, etc.). That said, her team is hers and mine is mine. Favours at stake. :-)

Wow, I hadnt realized how much I was holding up the draft. I'm usually at the top of the list on those things. So sorry. I will make more of an effort to check in when Im at home.
I haven't fallen asleep yet although some of my colleagues have, albeit not for very long. I must say that stranger things have happened although our stringent code of conduct prohibits me from talking about incidents... such as clients peeing on meeting room chairs and the like.
We don't keep liquor on the premises but Letter J's office has a usually well stocked minifridge (we are not employed by the same firm).
Again concerning the clock, it's probably a good idea to speed it up given that people might need the added motivation for the tougher choices that are coming up (I find the later rounds pretty anticlimactical, JMHO).
As for leaving a queue, I could take it... and I promise not too peek.

Only 11 picks made yesterday. I was hoping to have the draft done by September 2 or 3rd that way I could load the rosters Sunday evening. That would give us a day to check the rosters and then run waivers like a normal week on Wednesday. The down side is that we only have 9 days in that situation to finish the remaining 12 rounds of the draft. While this is certainly doable, we have to get more than a round a day done.
Again, if you aren't going to be around please leave a queue. We are starting to get to the point in the draft were picks start to diverge, I hope.
You can either leave a queue with another manager in this league or if you know someone else on the boards feel free.
One last thing, I am not trying to point fingers at anyone. I will post the cumulative clocks again at the end of round 9.

We'll have to find out from Frick how exactly he set up our league, but if you look at the RIFC rationales, the rationale behind Terrence McGee (a defensive player) is that he also provides return yardage. I don't have a cheat sheet that factors it in for IDP, so I don't care either way:)

Also not completely sure about this one.
However, Guru's rationale for his 8.10 Terrence McGee, DB, Buf selection would seem to indicate otherwise to that stated by Slackjaw.

Ok, since other league members seem to agree with me that it is getting old waiting for the same people every round. After the end of round 14 anyone who's cumulative clock is over 24 hours will from now on be on a 1 hour clock.
So at the end of this round DaBomb, JTSERB, and Nerfherders are on a 1 hour clock. If anyone has questions about the total time I will e-mail you the spreadsheet I have been recording the times on. If you left a queue 0 time was added to your clock, even if your queue holder took time to make your pick.
Would anyone have a problem dropping the rest of the clocks to 4 hours? Thank you to everyone who has been timely with making their picks and/or leaving queues.

4 hours sounds good. I wouldn't want it much shorter than that, as somedays I'm tied up in meetings for several hours. And for the occasion where there's a burst of picks preceding mine, that would be cutting it close.
btw, Frick, are you able to start populating our rosters in AOL, or do you need to wait until the draft is over?
146

No, I am going to start populating them when I have a chance. I just started on the schedules and the interface is driving me nuts. Everytime I change a match-up I have to wait for the page to reload. While this only takes 3-4 seconds, it is annoying when I have to do 14 teams x 14 weeks x 2 games.
OK, the clock drops to 4 hours at the end of this round.

I apologize for taking so long to pick just now. I was around last night until around 2 am then I thought I'd watch some TV for an hour but I inadvertently ended up passing out until now. I'm also sorry about my cumulative time, but some parts of the day I'm always by a computer while others I'm no where near one. If I had known that a clock might be at 1 hour at any time prior to this draft, I would not have signed up. As we get into the later rounds, there is a lesser chance of someone before you taking your pick so I will try to send out queues. However, it would take a large strain off my shoulders if I could have the 4 hour clock.

Thanks Kyle, but I already have the rosters in an easy to use format. Actually I have all of the picks in order, to track the time, and on another spreadsheet to keep track of each team by positions taken.

Kyle,
Thanks for the vote of confidence. Things have a tendancy to get competitive in the household, even with respect to which games to watch depending on who we are starting. I must say I was happy that we did not have to pick close to each other as I cannot be accused of stealing Letter J's players. However, Letter J did sulk for a few days when he saw I got the number 2 spot and he got relegated to 11 !
Should be an interesting season. And yes, I am looking forward to kicking more than just his bedonkeydonk... assuming my wishes come true and a few starting RB's are hit by lightning.

Can some one take a q if my pick comes up between 5 and 7 et? I have a Psychology Lab, and I would like to get my pick in ASAP.
Since no one else seems to have received JTSERB's queue and I am after him I am going to wait let him time out and then use all of my clock before I make my pick.
I don't want to skip him again, especially since we are making great time today, but GolfFreak is after me and he only have me a queue for Round 16. I also don't have my cheat sheets with me here at work and the guy that I had on my mind was Ben Watson, dang you mike :)
At this point I will probably looking for a trade or just punting the TE position. There are still some hidden gems out there, but alot more trash.

I will apologize at the outset for the impropriety of this post in a football thread as I am simply trying to get a hold of Letter J, whom I suppose is pressing "refresh" every few minutes and cannot be reached via other means of telecommunication. So here are my two issues for Letter J:
1. Your secretary wants you to get off the internet. Something about her wanting to get on...
2. Found myself a "date" for the Rolling Stones concert. Sue is exctatic! Thanks for the tickets!
You can call when you get offline.
Again, I apologize and I will spare all of you the whole "love-you-miss-you" ending that is conventionally included in these types of messages.
Frick - thanks for making my picks the past few rounds. Hopefully Miller is a gem and not trash:)

Dear russelldl,
Re: post #187 - Bite me! LOL.
I am sorry for advertising this on the thread; Probably not a nice thing to do. Actually, the Stones are playing this Saturday in my home city, which will be their biggest venue for this tour (or so they say). We are expecting roughly 80,000 spectators, the vast majority of which are out-of-towners. The down side will be the 400 people per porter-potty ratio, which means no drinking for me. Some people are so freaked out by the crowd for such a small town that they are offering their tickets for sale at a 2-for-1 price!
So this Saturday, set your clock for 8:30 p.m. (AST) and vigorously hate me... I will be standing, or moshing, on a urine soaked hill, not giving a sh_t about it...
Best, GB

She wasn't going to be getting on the c_ck if that is what you are implying. Although thanks for the very disconcerting mental image. One of them is at work and the other at home, separated by a river and approximately 7 kilometers. I guess they could have phone sex : o

LT for stones tickets? Damn, that's really tempting. I almost ponied up the 400 bucks to see them here in Baltimore, but I really don't have 400 spare dollars or any friends willing to spend that much money to go too. I think the arena here in Baltimore might be the smallest venue they play on this tour. Only 14,000. But I still have an outside shot at scoring some tickets to the NYC show at the Garden. Have fun and hopefully none of them kick the bucket before Saturday.

Ok so my friends at school are telling me that this is disgusting how long it is taking to do this draft, and i explained to them it is a "slow" draft, and all the aspects of the draft. But today after my pick I realized something. I just made the 236th player in the draft and excluding the 5 offensive linemen per team in the league there are 544 players. We have taken 43% of the starters in the league, if we have take all starters (which I am sure we have not since I have a backup running back on my team). This is sick. It is a sickness, and next year... Aww screw it I love this sh_t and I will do it again.
I love lamp. I love lamp.

FRICK@Work
ID: 220211 Thu, Sep 01, 2005, 17:12
I'll disagree with your 544 number, you are forgetting kickers and special team players who factor in this league.
Also some teams like the Colts have more than 6 offensive players that are draft worthy.
But you are right, I get frustrated that this draft is taking so long, but at the same time I am 3 other leagues and I woudn't drop any of them. This is way to much fun.
Although since I have 4 teams and very different rosters I am just going to watch the Colts and enjoy them each week instead of trying to watch the crawler and see how many fantasy points I have so far.
At least AOL gives free real time scoring, not that I would obsess about this or anything. ;)
Does anyone have an up-to-date draft grid? I had been tracking it, but I'm about 4-5 rounds behind and looking to leverage someone else's diligence. Now that everyone's teams are started to be filled out, I want to see if I might be able to win a few games with my team full of mediocrity and upside potential.
You could do what I did, Frick, and just fill your team up with Colts. Now I got Harrison, Wayne, Freeney, and the D. And in the third year of another keeper league I have Peyton, Marvin, and Wayne, and I used to have Pollard. (incidentally that draft started a day later than this one and we are in the fourth of seven rounds of a 12-team draft - talk about dragging.. ugh).
So as long as I'm rooting for the Colts, I can tally the points in my head as well (and this year I'll have a laptop - woohoo). So, are you a fellow Hoosier?

I just finished loading the schedules into AOL. If each team could please go their Team and check the schedule so make sure that you are not playing the same team twice in 1 week. You should play every other team twice. Once in Game 1 and once in Game 2.
I think I have everything correct, fingers crossed.

You're right, I meant Florida. I forgot about the whole NFL thing.
The reason I thought of it was my old high school team beat their opponent 63-3. This was the same opponent that ran the score up during my senior year and we had to restrain the head coach because he was challenging the other coach to a fight in the parking lot. Granted, the score was 70-0 and the starters for the opponent were in the game late in the 4th quarter.

I'm looking forward to beating your team like it's a red-headed step-child, please get in line, take a deep breath, and bend over.
However, this week's efforts must be directed at the slopy-headed, banjo picking, tongue chewing, incest-loving yokels.
Oh, I'm also forgetting about the other matchup where my goats will be tossing about their throat yogurt all over Kyle's team; Nice Colt logo you've got. However, if you find that you can't sit down by Monday, it's because I will have most abruptly dislodged that huge blue horseshoe from your cinnamon ring... good job getting it up there to begin with.

I'm assuming that no one had a complaint about the above trade. If you do, please post or e-mail me with an objection. If another league members also has a problem, I'll call for a vote and we will proceed from their.
Sorry Gandalf Greybear, but you better take your walking stick and your team full of hobbits back to the Shire cuz you are severely overmatched. Next year when you're in Single A you might think about drafting more than one running back and while you're at it you can get a QB who's not afraid to pass the ball.
But, you do have the evil goat going for you, I've got to give you that much. (but you'll have to give even more than your soul up to satan if you want a chance of beating me this week)

Apparently I need to make a change in the scoring system.
I had the setting that gave points to both Team D's and Offensive players. I changed the setting so that only Offensive, includes IDP's, only get return yards.

Who ever Team 14 is, you still need to set your line-up. The default is to have everyone on your bench.
Smith32, you also need to update your roster, since I processed the trade you are only starting 1 RB at the moment. I'll gladly let you spot me the points, but I would like to keep the integrity of the league.
Frick, I think you need to change the scoring back to the way you had it. RIFC also credits return yardage to team defense: posts 235-6

yeah - team defenses do get points for return yards and td's. and I think it was covered already, but when fanball/aol refers to offensive players it does include IDP's. you'd think they would have fixed this by now so that it would be more clear.
