- Donor [539581218] Thu, Aug 18, 2005, 23:08

We will use this thread during the draft. Please don't discuss draft-eligible players.

If you have a trade for draft picks, you may post it here along with confrimation from the other party. If a player is involved, you still need to accept it on the cbs site. Use the comment part to name all draft picks involved. A commish must approve the trade before you can make that pick. If that pick is up and no commish is around, have that manager make your pick for you.

That's who I would have picked, sw.

Btw, the clock is suspended between midnight and 8 am once the clock is started.

Pete talked to ds and he said he was picking as soon as his movie got over.

We have Promize's cell # so we can give him a call. I figured these first few would fly off the board quickly.

There you go dashing my hopes... with 3 picks in 19 minutes setting our pace I figured we'd be done with the entire draft by mid-day tomorrow.

It also helps prevent people from thinking someone is still available as some people search the site for free agents looking for the best players out there.

Thanks for bringing that up.

SW-
Nice pick! Didn't think I would see anybody with the guts to do that in a keeper league (2 have drafted already and so far Caddy has gone 2nd in both). I had 3rd pick in one draft but traded Benson and took on some bad cap for Caddy...

He is going to be great I think. I am on the road and won't have access until tomorrow mid-day but not like I have a pick coming up anytime or anything.

Well got my hands on a computer.... if you want to call it that... Pent90 and a 28k modem hook up.. Basically i have to redial every 3 minutes.. I was almost positive that REF informed me this draft wasn't starting till when I got back into town.

I see it is now my pick, but I have zero notes and on this crappy computer i can't do much research..

Another problem is, I get back to my house at about midnight on the 23rd... So I guess that means my draft clock burns as well as losing a pick?

No Promize, the draft hasn't officially started yet, but it will start on Tuesday at noon with an 8 hour clock, so either way you are going to be missing your first pick unless you research now and get it in.

Ref and I will be glad to help however possible. This could be a big pick for you so I wouldn't chance missing it.

Well I know it doesn't start till tuesday noon, but I know i talked to REF on AIM about this draft and was under the impression i would be fine for the start of the draft. Both of you knew i would be getting home on the 23rd, guess I should of been more specific of the time of the flight.

And your right, it is a huge pick for me.. i know I had researched a few rookies for my team, but hadn't decided.

I can't pull anything up from CBS at all, the scripts and java are just way to much for this pent90/28k/windows 95 computer with zero ram.

I hate to delay the draft, even if it isn't official.. If you and REF could send me an email of the TOP 5 available players for RB/QB/WR I guess I could make a decision from there.

My 3 concerns are Warner, Ricky, Ward...

There will be a delay at 1.09 anyway. That pick is moving in a three-way trade. I'm not quite sure when the details will be sent to the commisshes for approval and one of the managers is out of town. That part of it is out of my hands.

The trade will also have to be broken down into a number of 2-way trades to be accepted by CBS.

Promize, it's great you got at least some access as I was planning on calling you today. My understanding is that you would be back in time for the draft clock to start. Typically, we launched the draft on Friday and it didn't start officially until Monday and few picks were made over the weekend. But after talking to a couple people, there were a few obvious picks that we could get out of the way to get a head start on the draft ang perhaps save a few hours. I didn't understand that you wouldn't be back until the 24th or I'd have made sure you understood that you should leave a Q for us. Either way, take your time and you have everyone except for these first few taken to choose from.

Hope you like the RIFC picks made for you!

As far as the first four, with Benson not wanting to sign and Jones the starting RB there, I may have taken arrington first, but Benson still may be the better pick overall so I don't blame Toral one bit for taking him. Man, Torals team is going to be tough. Hate to admit it, but I had to vote for the NFC South on our new poll on the football site.

Toral, about the 3-way pick. I see nothing wrong with the trade from what I've seen in the sneak preview. You can deliver it just as you did for me when you're offering it to the league for approval. Also please add in addition what each individual team has and are giving up. Until that time, you may or may not want to ask the would-be new owner of that pick to tell you which player he wants at 1.09 if you're still sure the trade is going to go down. Dan is in Calagary on vacation though, so don't know if he has access or is in communication or what.

No one is in any hurry though, but I was thinking if we can get a pick in here or there it may take a lot of stress off some people who can't be on as often as others.

I will have my pick I think in next hour or two guys or less... Got several emails from people offering to help as well as filling me in with data on players. I really dig that, and just proves how competitive and strong this league is, that people would go out of their way to help you make good decision instead of watching you burn a pick.

OT:

Dan, if you do see this at all if you get any access, I'm going to post here right now and Dr. Doom's site what I plan on doing with your team....

Our original plan is not going to work, and I'm going to do Clemens > Harden. Holding Willis and Peavy. I think that's the best way to take care of things while also being conservative.

....Sorry for the off topic guys.

Trade Peavy, he's been worthless against Houston the past 2 years and San Diego will only muster 1 or 2 runs against the Rocket.

What makes you think that Clemens isn't injured???

If both did well, we were going to go with Willis > Harden instead and hold both pitchers...but neither did well. Today is a very important day of trading for people with both Clemens and Peavy. Holds? One gets traded (which one)? or Both traded?

I am not totally sure Clemens is healthy right now, and he is going to lose probably 500K between starts. This makes me want to "hold" Peavy, "sell" Clemens, and then take my chances with Peavy for now, who has a very holdable long term schedule.

For me, I'm going to wait until the very last minute, and if I feel ballsy enough, I may dump both, grab Burnett, and then maybe start a rotation.

For him, it's moot, and I made the trade. What I want to do for him is be conservative and let him use his trades, it is his team....

As for my team, advice would be welcomed as I'm very torn which one (Peavy or Clemens) to sell for Carpenter today.

Peavy has been decent TSN wise, 53 and 48 aren't exactly what I'm looking for from a starting pitcher. San Diego is the worst offensive team in baseball so despite pitching fairly will he's potentially losing 45 points because his team can't hit worth a lick. Personally, I'd trade them both, with 9 PT's Dan needs to make a move and Burnett has a good matchup.

Welp that was tough decision to make. I saw a few players I thought could help me. Saw some that could definitely help me in the "now". But seeing as I was originally from St. Louis and have followed Warner... I just couldn't see myself without a backup for him on my squad.

Even if Smith burns and fails this year, if Warner was to go down.. 1 or 2 points from the QB position could mean a victory or a loss. In this big league, games are so close so often, just needed that insurance.

Anyways, glad I got my pick in and was able to get things flowing again.

As I told Promize in an email, don't think that pick helps him at all this year, but could be big in the future. Rookie, QB, horrible offense, not a very good beginning and he's playing warner ahead of him anyhow--not an impact player this year that he needed--but who knows what will be out there or who might need a QB to trade with? How many impact players are out there though? The obvious ones are off the board so it may be as good of a pick as any. Stay tuned! If I'm wrong it won't be the first time. And stl and I and apparently several others all gave him input so he was well armed with info.

Shelton is an interesting pick. I was looking at him too. Could get some goaline carries and who knows who the top two RBs will do. Def. could get injured yet again. Could be a very nice pick.

I hope I get help from him this season, but if not, that is okay.
Had to replace "The Bus" as I figure this is it for him.

Really did not expect any of the top four to slip to me, but think Shelton will have a better fantasy season than 2 of the 4.

We have a 3-way trade agreed to and submitted to us for approval.

Here is what they have agreed to end up with:

Dan gets - 9th overall pick and Jaguars defense
Toral gets - 14th overall pick and Jeb Putzier
Pride gets - Keyshawn Johnson and Rams defense

Appears that:
Dan gives up Keyshawn and Putz and his 14th
Toral gives up 9th and Rams D
Pride gives up Jags D

We are going through it now...

Yikes, pretty harsh opinion of Rogers that is probably not shared by many in this league. Granted, he has gotten injured the last two seasons, but he has a ton of talent which is probably why Detroit drafted him #2 two years ago. Yes, he will have to have a solid, injury-free season to prove he is capable of being a top-rated wr and I am thinking this year might be it. Wasn't trying to lowball you. I just happen to think he is going to produce more over the next couple seasons than any two players you draft this year. I will check back on this thread in 2008 and let you know how it turned out.

pretty harsh opinion of Rogers that is probably not shared by many in this league

Well, peddle him to someone else for 2 high draft choices then.

Sorry I didn't leave a queue MBJ. Turns out the guy I was looking at (Mike Williams) had already been drafted anyway, and beyond him I wasn't sure. Once Williamson, Williams, and Clayton were off the board, I figured, heck why not take the starting running back for the Broncos? Everyone was high on Bell last year too, but Droughns ended up to be the stud. Hoping it is Anderson this year. Could be a worthless pick or could be a great one. Better risk/reward than many others I could have taken in my mind anyway.

Toral, you SOB. First BJ21 takes my backup for Barlow and then you go and take my backup for Westbrook! You know he is wothless to anybody but me! Moats? Ha! This guy is a nobody! What a waste of a pick, ha ha ha.

How's that?

Actually I like the pick though.

I like the Anderson pick. I knew StL knew about him as we talked about taking him for Promize in the RIFC league he's in, but could only hope that rookies wouldn't all be used up. Looks like I'm going to have to go back to my fallback plan...that is if that plan is even available to me by the time it is my turn.

If anyone who hasn't picked yet wants to take a look at Toomer, to bme it's obvious that he's better than anyone available. Looking for your first round pick and other considerations (perhaps moving up in a later round). Again, just trying to figure out my logjam of bye weeks in week 5 (4 guys on bye--2 flex positions open).

Please don't forget to pick up your player then email the next three to pick once you draft.

My original plan was to get Graham and when most of the guys I really wanted went off the boards, it was the fall back plan. I wanted to keep 10 and I was confident Graham would still be there. I knew Toomer wouldn't have been and I doubted Patten would have been there either, so my plan worked out. It may have been a reach, but I don't pick again until the end of the 3rd. He may have still been there, but at least I know now.

AP - Chargers Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates has agreed to terms on a new six-year contract. Additional terms of the contract were not disclosed. Gates will sign the contract Tuesday afternoon.

It appears he'll have to serve the 3 game suspension and will miss the 1st game of the regular season. Those guys really know how to play hardball in San Diego.

I had some free time today and thought I would share my own thoughts on the first round. Obviously, we all have different opinions and I feel free to share mine.

=)

1) Carnell William, 2) Ronnie Brown, 3) Cedric Benson, 4) JJ. Arrington- I lumped the first four together because everyone drafting outside of the top four would gladly swap their first round pick for any of these guys. I think Arrington will make the biggest splash this season of the four but all are certainly keepers. A little concerned with Benson's contract status especially after hearing the news he put his new home up for sale. It's a bluff, though; he is not going to walk away from millions. Whoever owns Jones has got to be a little happy with how this is turning out.

5) Braylon Edwards- Great talent and worthy of an early pick. I am not a fan of receivers in the Cleveland offense but who am I to not like the 3rd player taken in the NFL draft? He has the talent to be a top receiver in the NFL and Toral has the WR depth to store him away and see how he develops.

6) Alex Smith- Young QB on a currently bad team. Should get his chance to play sometime this year and show what he's got. I thought Rattay looked pretty good in October and maybe early November last year, but he has had 5 years to develop and the 49ers think this kid is the future.

7) Eric Shelton- The consolation prize for missing out on the top 4 backs. Loads of talent and with Davis nearing the end and Foster looking to usurp Fred Taylor from mount fragile, he should get the opportunities to play soon.

8) Mike Williams- IMO, the best WR available from the last two NFL drafts, on an offense capable of scoring on any play by a number of different players.

9) Vernand Morency- Can step in and play if DD gets hurt or if he doesn't produce. I don't think Davis is in jeopardy of losing his job, but he did miss one game and had 7 others with less than 20 rushing attempts last year. Good fit for our Dan's Bills.

10) Frank Gore- Barlow gave me headaches last year, so I called the 49ers and asked them to do something about it. Gore is going to be the answer. Maybe not this year, but he is solid.

11) Kevin Curtis- I don't know much about him. Maybe the heir apparent to Bruce? I assumed that would be Shaun McDonald. I must have missed something because he was drafted in one of my survivor leagues.

12) Troy Williamson- The next Randy Moss. Well, maybe not but lots of talent and on a good team. Will have to get up to speed on the Vikings system before earning the #2 wr spot, but will be an eventual starter.

13) Mark Clayton- Great receiver but went to the wrong team. Uggh, Boller throwing him the ball. I watch a lot of Big 12 games here in the Midwest and really like this guy’s ability. Hopefully he will have a good QB throwing him the ball someday.

14) Ryan Moats- Westbrook always seems a little beat up and their other unnamed RB (not drafted in this league) is hurt and out for the year AGAIN. That makes Moats the #2 back and makes this pick look even better. I have to wonder why the Eagles weren't concerned with offering Westbrook a long-term deal.

15) Mike Anderson- Currently listed as the starter in Denver and a good choice to help fill in some early bye weeks or for a team that feels like it can win it all this year. It will drive you crazy owning a RB from Denver this year with so many options, but if he continues to start he could have a big year.

16) Brandon Jacobs- I almost drafted him in the 8th spot. The Giants have their Thunder Back. Great pick.

17) Matt Jones- I don't know where he fits in on this team. Probably the hopeful replacement once Jimmy calls it quits. From all I have read, the Jags are going to cut bait on last years #3 WR who has never lived up to his 1st round draft pick potential after 6 disappointing seasons with 3 different clubs. If that reads funny, I am trying to be very careful not talking about undrafted players even though someone would be a bonehead if they drafted the guy I am talking about. I don't even know if Jones is signed yet.

18) Shayne Graham- Woohoo, a kicker! Purely a need pick and certainly one of the better kickers available.

19) Marcel Shipp- Everything indicates that Arrington will be the starter and Shipp the back-up. They will probably still share some carries, but I am thinking more of a 70-30 split than 50-50. Shipp has lots of talent but also lots of health concerns.

20) Justin McCareins- My top rated WR available for this years scoring format. With Pennington healthy and Coles back in the mix, should have a great year.

21) Chester Taylor- I have drafted Taylor on at least one team the last 3 years. Great insurance for Lewis, if you have Lewis. Otherwise, you have to be wishing some evil on Lewis if you want to get production from him. When he did fill in last year, he had 3-4 very good games. With only one starting RB, this was the spot to get another running back.

22) Reche Caldwell- CC's Broncos are so full of talent he could choose the player he felt fit in best with his team. I think I would rather gamble on a rookie in this spot. At best, anyone not named Tomlinson or Gates is the third option on this offense. Parker proved to be fragile last year and if he goes down again, Caldwell would be elevated to the #2 WR. He had a couple good games last year when he filled in.

23) Reggie Brown- Somebody is going to be catching balls thrown from McNabb this year and in the years to come. Reggie will be competing for the #2 spot. I think this was a good pick in this spot.

24) Terry Glenn- Bledsoe and Glenn back together again. Now, close your eyes and try to say that 3 times really fast. I bet you mess it up. Glenn's three best seasons have been with Bledsoe throwing him the ball. Both are older and not nearly as talented as they once were. Glenn missed 10 games last year and has missed 23 in the last four years. Maybe he will be this years "Muhammad", but I doubt it. I liked a handful of younger WR in this spot over Glenn.

twarp is picking.

I never would have imagined so many kickers going already. Last year I picked the first kicker at 2.24 (It was Graham). This year I took Graham at 1.18. Glad I did as I would have had to trade for a kicker since I don't have a pick again until 3.18. Still, I took Rackers last year at 5.24, so it's a surprise so many went so early.

I really know this is a tough crowd, but am continually amazed at the inability to slip anybody through.
I was really torn with the 2.07 choice.
I'm happy with the Joey Galloway choice, but guess I really missed the mark on my thought the Heath Miller would get back to me.
Sheesh, two picks later.

You know I love Ronald Curry and my Raiders. I was very surprised when the Raiders traded for Moss. They are very deep at WR and could have used that money on some better defensive players. Don't get me wrong, I love Moss being a Raider and his presence (along with Porter's Hammy) is going to allow Curry to get a lot of one-on-one time with some defenders. I do think the Raiders have a lot of weapons and some weeks it's going to be frustrating to have the one that didn't get the looks or TD's.

TB, that's exactly why I am so high on Toomer and why I wouldn't trade him for the offers I did receive. Everyone will doubling Moss and Buress, much like they did Porter and Toomer last year. With Porter healthy this year--no one will double Curry--ever!

I had about 8 or 9 guys I was looking at with my first pick, but again, I thought for sure Curry would be there in the 3rd if Heath Miller wasn't. Every single one of my guys from that list are long gone and I'm trying to come up with another strategy. I kinda had an idea of who might be there that could help me, but knowing my luck they will be gone too. All I can say is Kudos.

I also figured Curry is a good fit for me in the case that Porter's hammy becomes a lingering issue, he'll slide in as the #2 across from Moss.

I will go with the over on Matt Jones for tonight. I read up on him some more after I posted my quick thoughts above and it looks like he will be given every opportunity to replace their current 3rd WR. I also read a clip from FBG that Del Rio wants to see what the kid can do, so they should look towards him often tonight.

I didn't think to check this draft immediately since I was sure it'd gone by me. As hammered as Pete's been the last couple of days since turning 21 on Monday, I should have known the last thing he's checking is his email (more like the new ho's at TTU). n/p Ref, I'm going to blame my MD for switching my appt. days at the last minute. At least I'm here all day today!

I appreciate skinneej for saying something as I didn't mention him yesterday, thanks buddy. ;)

The downside is I found out later from the Mrs. that our MD. told her after I'd left the room for some tests that he didn't want the eye surgeons to do the cataract surgery right now. It seems I need to recover more from what I went thru in May with the 3 kidney surgeries (one kidney). I guess I'll be legally blind in my right eye until next year. bummer. At least the left eye is working great! (no bleeds since 7/12)

Looking ahead a few picks, is 4.09 (Saints) still a "dead pick", or has he traded since the draft grid was posted such that it was a live pick?

Just want to make sure we don't end up with the Cowboys at 4.10 waiting on a pick that isn't coming... unless it is.

Let me explain the chart. If it didn't have any time added, I skipped it so ignore the pick number. I only added :13 mins to rfs' time because he had no idea that the guy before him had timed out well before. Based on that, I think i need to go back and give Coyotes some more time too. Even though I had a Q, I still gvae myself :09 as I picked for myself and the 2nd one I gave myself the :49 mins as my Q was already picked and not added to the CBS database.

I added/subtracted these times very fast and there could be mistakes.

If the manager has less than 4 hours left on his clock, that is the remaining time. All time is based on when the last manager either picked or timed out. Use this chart and not the 4 hrs to know when that manager has timed out. If a manager has timed out for the entire draft, he may only use a q or pick anytime after his spot should have been.

Sorry ds, I'm usually great for a Q, but I did give everyone fair warning that I wasn't going to be around. I'm sorry for those that didn't see it like ds!!!

But, all you have to do is to give your Q to someone that is going to be around and they can announce they have a Q for you and will pick and you won't be skipped. But they do need to pick right away. Or you can be ready to pick yourself as soon as it's your turn and even though you're skipped, if you post first, it's your player.

Since there are 4 yellow picks that aren't going to be used, I assume there are 4 owners that won't complete the draft via drafting?

Ref or StL do you know who they are?

I'd be willing to offer my 4.21 for their 4th next year and take my chances on the WW/FA market after the draft if anyone is intersted.

Sorry about picking early, I was told I was up but I should have verified it myself.

If it is determined that someone picked early then it would seem fair that the manager he jumped can pick the player he drafted without any argument whatsoever. This isn't much of a problem with me because not many want the players I draft anyway as I'm not good.

Now since I picked early will you add some time to my clock, say 30-45 minutes.

I'll settle for 15.

I had my next pick narrowed down to two guys, Courtney Anderson or Kris Mangum. Pete took Anderson last round and Promize's TE has a bye week 3 so I felt obliged to take Mangum for him. Not a great TE but with Freddie Jones retiring he could be ready to have a good year.

LOL AF, didn't cost you any time at all since it was made during the "sleep" period.

I've got thk not only timing out but showing him with 5 picks and he's still on the board for another pick. Have I made a mistake somewhere with him?

I didn't realize Pride was done either. Please give us a heads up before your pick is up if you are done with the draft. I've got to go through and make sure whoever is forfeiting picks, there are corresponding managers who are short a pick. I know Dan is short a pick as it was his trade with Pride that put him over. Toral forfeited two picks but thought one of those was thk's. I'll go research this if need be, but if someone can give me a heads up first it will save some time.

Please refer to the chart to determine when you managers time out. Your time starts when the last manager timed out--no matter when they pick. The draft started out quickly but is dragging and dragging and dragging now.

Just a heads up for those about to pick... you'll likely need to wait for Goatlocker to time out. He's been on the clock since 10:31am EST yesterday in the RIFC draft and it's now wrapped back around to him. Something must have come up... hopefully he's just super-busy with work. Anyway, again, just FYI... seems that most likely it'll be a timeout situation here as well.

Mock Lottery Results:

If we were using the lottery for this year (I guess random is random so let's just say the draft were starting today since we ran thise today) here is what the order would be...but first some information about what we did. Guru made us the chart and even ran the random numbers for us and copied me automatically based on the program he had written. I'll copy part of the email he sent. I came up with the same results he did.

You should have received emailed copies of each run. I'll
summarize the results in this email, and also list the team selected
for
each pick.

Pick 1: 4-8-10-14: Team 10
Pick 2: 1-4-12-14: Team 7
Pick 3: 1-6-7-8: Team 11
Pick 4: 3-5-6-13: Team 15

Interestingly, Team 16 never appeared in these four draws. (I actually
ran one test run before these 4 "official" ones, and Team 16 did come
up
that time.

The theoretical odds are about 1 in 3 that Team 16 will not appear in
any of the fours draws. (0.75^4)

Just for kicks, I ran a few more, although I didn't copy you on them,
so
as not to fill up your email box.

3-9-13-14: Team 16
6-9-10-11: Team 13
5-7-12-13: Team 16
1-2-10-12: Team 5
3-10-12-14: Team 12
4-6-7-11: Team 5
2-3-6-7: Team 16
3-5-7-14: Team 15
7-10-12-14: Team 15
2-4-7-11: Team 9

Team 16 is the last place team and team 1 is the 9th place team. We use the same method as the NBA does (and now NHL too). Our Factor: 0.736.

Basically the last place team has about a 25% chance to get in the top 4 (250 balls out of 1001). 15th place has 200 balls and the 9th place team has only 3 balls. We can post the complete chart later. I'm not going to consider all the traded picks right now as this is just a mock so if no picks had been traded, here would be our draft order for the first round only. Subsequent rounds would go back to the reverse order of finish:

10. Goatlocker's Chargers
7. Turley's Cardinals
11. Promize's Sehawks
15. PD's Browns
16. Smallwhirld's Chiefs
14. CPride's Jaguars
13. deepsnapper's Eagles
12. thk's Vikings
9. TB's Ravens
8. Toral's Saints
6. AF's Falcons
5. Skineej's Packers
4. bmd's Texans
3. Dan's Bills
2. StL Cards' 49ers
1. MBJ's Bengals
the top 8 would follow...

So GL would have won the lottery and had first pick. The bottom six in the lottery were unaffected.

Note that by same method we are using a tweaked version which allows for 16 teams and the top 4 whereas in hoops and baseball we use the 14 teams and top 3 like the NBA does. More teams in G24 that don't make playoffs so Guru was kind enough to modify it so it would work for our league too. This will be in place for next year's draft.

I don't believe 5.14 or 5.16 were traded, and that both remain forfeited as extra picks... no?

If so, 5.15 (Vikings) had already used their remaining 0:52 of clock time on pick 5.05... thus we immediately jumped to 5.17 (Texans) who are now on the clock (since pick 5.13 was made at 5:37pm EST).

This certainly isn't official, but it's my understanding of where we are at. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't know if you are serious or not, but since there is no ;) in it I'll take it as it was. No adds or drops until the waiver period runs. Once you hit your 14 player limit, your draft is over. If you're short a player, you have to wait until waivers or trade.

If that's the rule- that's fine. Conceptually, I don't understand the logic that allows me to trade a player - or even make a 2 for 1 trade; but disallows a straight out drop.

Anyway - n/p.

MBJ:

Re: that rule. I guess we never considered the situation such as you proposed about the add/drop rule. The logic behind the "no add / no drop" part was just to get keepers set and discontinue player movement except by 2 vehicles 1) draft and 2) trade.

We also thought it wa sbest to let the draft run it's course and everyone have a same time release point for the waiver wire which is why there is no extra drfat picks after round 5. So, if we allowed last minute drops, an owner could drop an "out-for-the-sason" player and gain an extra pick without having to wait for the WW period.

But, I'm sure the owners/commish's would be open to a proposed rule cahngefor next year if you feel it has meirt.

Re: 252... isn't that exactly what was said (that 5.17 is up) in 244 (the bolded part)? Or are you just looking for a 3rd source of confirmation from RFS?

Vikings were a pick short when the draft began, not a pick over. Dunno if there were trades that changed that situation.

The only problem with a drop during the draft is if some other team feels that dropped player is valuable to them, such that they would want to acquire them. Depending on the timing of the drop, some other team might get dibs of them regardless. I would say you either need to maintain "no drops during draft"... OR you need to say "players dropped during the draft are ineligible to be redrafted"... in essence giving priority on those dropped players to those with highest waiver priority, which is what would happen anyway if they were dropped immediately following the draft.

Douug - I don't think that's necessary. If we were doing a live, quick draft that might be a concern; but with a 2 week draft, all sorts of things happen that drastically alter a player's value during the course of a draft - and is "unfair" to the managers that didn't get to draft with that new information. (Look at how Orton's value has changed during the sourse of ths draft for instance.)

I disagree. The fundamental difference is that injuries and what not that affect player values are all external to the draft and the managers. In this case, however, we're talking about a league participant taking an action (dropping a player), the timing of which has an impact on other league participants.

Thus, if we allow drops, it seems to me that adding a clause like "players dropped during the draft are ineligible to be redrafted" would ensure that we keep the playing field more level... certainly moreso than it would without such a clause.

I actually think it would be less of a concern in a live, quick draft with so much happening... in our case, one could be much more specific about the timing for their drop to coincide with someone's pick (or avoid someone else's).

I guess when designing rules I always approach it from the perspective of "suppose I wanted to cheat/collude/play favorites/etc... how could I take advantage of this rule?" and then design the rule to accomodate (err... counteract?) that sort of thinking.

It's similar to the way banks and security software companies and similar entities hire hackers to try and (legally) break into their systems. By doing so and anticipating issues in advance, you can proactively address them, and thus make the system better.

All that said, this is a relatively minor rule. ;-p Still, what harm would be done by adding that clause?

BTW, the precedent is from two years ago when I drafted James Allen and then he retired a few days later. I worked out a trade to add another pick, but it was disallowed because I was told I could not drop Allen until after the draft was completed.

We've got to have twarpy make his pick quickly as we need to finalize all rosters and get waivers turned on. Don't want to rush uneccessarily but if we get waivers ready and turned on today (sept 1), then i believe it's two full days so the first run is the 4th and the 2nd run is the 7th. So really need to get this going today (Thursday). The first game is the 8th. Waivers will run every day if necessary (two full days after a player is dropped). Once the season starts as most of you remember, all free agents will go on waivers at the freeze and will run I believe on thursday mornings.

I emailed twarpy. basically, stl and i will start to go through and check rosters and compare teams with short players to the draft and see that there are an equal number of forfeited picks, etc. Then we have to go through all settings and make sure they are accurate. Once we're happy there, all that's left is to turn on waivers.

Again, this needs to be done today, so I told twarpy (via email) that we'd give him until everything was done and I'd check back with him again. If still nothing, we will have to start waivers and he will forfeit his final pick and fill his roster as other teams short a player will do on the fa/ww.

Great twarpy has drafted and we're all good.

Here is what stl and I have as far as teams short full rosters:

AZ 13 players, Bills 13 players, Browns 13 players, Giants 13 players, Steelers 13 players.

Dan (Buf) was short a player after he did the 2 for 1 after keepers. Still that means 5 picks should have been forfeited. Dan had to forfeit his own, Toral 2 picks, mbj one pick and Pride one pick. So everything adds up.

AZ 13 players, 4 draft picks
Bills 13 players, 5 draft picks, but traded 2 for 1 keepers
Browns, 13 players, 4 draft picks
Giants, 13 players, 4 draft picks
Steelers, 13 players, 4 draft picks

This looks right to me. Anyone sees a discrepancy then please speak up now.
