0 Subject: RIFC AAA #2 Draft Discussion #2

old one getting too long.

Holt, I am inserting this in the top of the discussion so in case anyone wants to use for reference- TB

Priority Claiming
All free agents (any players not on a current roster) are subject to a weekly claiming process at noon on Wednesday. Following the first 6 weeks of the season, the priorities will reset weekly based on the reverse of W/L percentage. After that, priorities will not be reset. Throughout the season, when a player is claimed (either via "free agent priority claim" or a waiver claim), the claiming team moves to the end of the claiming priority list.

Starting at 1:00pm on Wednesday, all free agents may be picked up by any team "first come, first served" without any change in priority status.

When a player is dropped from a roster, the player will go on waivers for 48 hours. At the end of the 48 hour period, if any team has placed a claim on the player, the team with the highest claiming priority will receive the player. If no claims are submitted, the player becomes a free agent at that time. If a player is dropped within 48 hours of his game freeze, he may not be claimed until the following week's free agent claiming process.

Starting five minutes prior to the scheduled start of each NFL game, no player in that game may be dropped, regardless of whether the player is an active or bench player.

Schedule
13 week round robin
Doubleheaders all weeks 1-13 (play each team twice)
Single elimination playoffs, weeks 14-16

Trade deadline
The trade deadline is 11:30pm EST on November 11.

Playoffs
8 teams
Top 6 W/L records are seeded 1-6
Top remaining total points are seeded 7-8
Teams with equivalent W/L records are seeded based on head-to-head first, then total points
Bracket is fixed (no reseeding after each round)

Players at the primary skill positions (QB, RB, WR) are frozen for the playoffs. Team defenses are also frozen, since they are not subject to injury uncertainty. Other positions are eligible for injury-replacement add/drop/claim transactions only.

Specifically, players in the other slots (TE, PK, IDP) may only be replaced if they are designated as questionable or worse on the NFL injury report. This allowance does not apply to any player who was designated questionable or worse for the week 13 game (the final regular season game).

Thus, you cannot add or drop a QB, RB, WR, or team Def after the week #13 freeze, period. You can only drop someone else if that player was designated as "Probable" or better for week 13, and "Questionable" or lower at some point thereafter. If one of those players is dropped, he can only be replaced by a player fulfilling the same position. (LB and DB will be considered the same position for this purpose.)

Holt has my queue for round 9.

I'll be around most of tomorrow except between 11AM and 1PM for queue duty. I will check in before I leave at 11AM.

We're getting a nice flow during the day with this end of the draft.

Very enjoyable.

I remember going into the last week, fighting for the last play-off spot. I was thinking that if only I had a better defense throughout the year I would have won a few more games and earned my spot. I lost several games by 1-5 points where my def scored 10 points less than my opponent.

After reading your rationale on Urlacher, Hubble, I can say almost the same thing on my last pick of Brooks. I was at work, peeked in and saw I was up, and didn't want to hold the draft up. Couldn't remember who I had ranked where, but figured Brooks always seems to do better than the projections. I forgot about Clements who I had very high on my list. Almost took another defense. I think I need to sleep a bit before I draft another player today.

Per post #39: I'll be around all weekend except for a few hours Sat evening.

We've made pretty good progress this week. We might be able to keep the clock off, or at least extend it to 8 or 10 hours just to keep things moving.

What's everyone else think?

I'll call some people, if that helps.

yep. i'm going to go on record that a weekend clock is lame, and it's BS.

when we were freaking out earlier, we were told not to worry, that we were making good time.

we're 12 rounds in, well past halfway, and should be done by mid next-week. i've actually never been in a slow draft that DIDN'T pause for the weekend.

all I see is those who are opposed to a weekend clock. how many are for it?

opening day is 16 days away.
the aim is to finish at least 1 week before the season starts. It's important that we hit that deadline.
we have 10 rounds left to draft and 9 days to meet the target end-date. only 5 of those days are weekdays.

as far as I know the RIFC still runs their clock on the weekend. but, if you guys are all opposed to it, we can go without a clock this weekend. just be prepared to go with one next weekend if the draft isn't finished (at the rate of 1 round a day it won't be).

if you will be unavailable this weekend - put together a queue so that we can keep this moving.

to allow time for the final waiver/FA period, trades, and to get the players entered and lineups set. and I'd rather shoot for the 4th because it allows us some room for error. I don't want the draft to end just 2 or 3 days before the first games.

Friday was pretty sad as far as how many picks that were made. We've had a couple of days of good flow, but it has lagged badly at times.

If we stop the clock this weekend we must be prepared to have a clock next weekend and/or shorten the clock if necessary.

That said, I prefer to run some sort of a clock to keep things moving. Even if it is 8 or 10 hours.

i see no problem having a shorter clock during the week.

i'm commishing another league that is further behind than this league. much further. i'm still putting the draft on hold.

next week, i've already let them know we're probably going to a 2 to 3 hour clock.

i also believe it's important to be done by next friday. with a shorter clock, there is no reason why we can't do this easily...

Again I nabbed two top 10 IDP talent well into the IDP rampage. I did have to be a little careful at this point because most of the backup QBRBWR were totally spare here meaning nearly all the next picks would be off-skills.

LJ Smith

Great upside TE here with the upheaval in PHI and their WR situation. A potential 1000yd threat and should get loads of redzone looks as the only pass catching TE of consequence on the roster now.

Thomas Davis

Another top 20 IDP talent left hanging out there that I couldn't let go another round. Starting to become a three man race between Wiggs, TB, and Myself.

That is nice of Culdeus to say, but we were both feeling pretty good about our teams last year about this same time too. I like almost every team so far. Yes, we all have a strange pick or two, but this league seems more competitive than last years RIFC just based on how the draft has fallen-out. I do like Wiggs and Culdeus's teams, but I happen to like Hubble's team quite a bit as well as Tree's, Toral's and BMD's. I just looked at every team again and there is only one team that I think is far behind the others.

well, no matter how many times these pre-season predictions turn out to be completely wrong, you will still see the predictions in every draft.

there is so much more to winning a league than just the draft. player projections miss as much as they hit.

you can accurately grade a draft after the season is over, but right now any draft grade is just opinion and for entertainment purposes only.

I agree with you Toral and with Holt. It is nice to rate a draft and hear other's opinions, but last year my #1 pick Deuce was hurt, my 3rd pick Steve Smith was lost for the season before the first game was completed, and I can go on and on. Injuries are so huge in fantasy football. The season is too short for a team to be able to survive if their top picks get hurt and you don't have a solid back-up.

nice progress today guys. very smooth.

I need to catch up on my rationales something fierce. it would be nice to see everyone take a stab at them.
you don't have to recite a bunch of stats if that's too dry for you. just whatever pops in your head.

the rationales in invitational leagues take the place of draft discussion in a way. it's to encourage everyone to talk about their picks, and having their own thread means you have the podium and no arguments will break out. you can make outlandish predictions and heap praise on your own picks and there's nothing anyone can do about it. or, I guess it can also be a chance to tell everyone how stupid you think you are.
either way, they are fun to read when waiting between picks, and funny as hell to read when the season is over.

12.08 Samie Parker, WR, KC

I needed to pick up a 4th WR here and I felt like Samie was as good a choice here as any. He is listed as the #2 WR on the KC depth chart and should get more chances than any other WR left on the board. He's got the speed and quickness to be a home run threat, but size is a goncern.

Probably considered a sleeper by some, as he is at best, a 3rd option in the KC passing game.

The better Parker pick would have been Willie, but I already have a 4th week bye RB and did not want to have any bye week issues. I also liked the 2 WRs taken before Samie and looked closely at 2 out of the 3 picked after him.

at this stage he's the only qb left. im not very excited about the fact that he has yet to score a td in preseason. but he should fit right in with the rest of my team "on the outside looking in".

I think it has to be done this way:

Offline Draft

Does your league hold your draft the old fashioned way? If so, we can handle that too. Simply hold your draft and record the results. Once the draft is completed, the Commissioner can either go into the Live Draft Tool and enter the players in pick by pick OR they can go into Commissioner Tools ---> General Setup ---> Load Rosters and add the players that way.

He is listed as a defensive end at NFL.com and was drafted as a DE. AOL is using data from fanball which also has him as a DE. I am thinking that they do not have multiple position eligibility for any players, especially IDP. He will probably stay listed as a DL for the season.

You are behind on your rationales, btw.

12.13 Adam Vinatieri, K, NWE

At this point, i still had few WR, (Williamson, Callico, Lloyd) 2 TE (Johnson, Wiggins)on my list and some IDP… none standing above the crowd… except Wiggins (hoped he would slip since 11 people already had TE).. I thought it would be a good time to take yet another stud in a category where constant production is always nice. I'm really comfortable with the fact i have studs in every category except TE... I'll speak about depth in a post-draft analysis... I consider NWE being this year again an every week favorite and Adam V. should get his share of scores...

14.13 Jermaine Wiggins, TE, MIN

This is the 13th TE to be taken… and could have major upsides. If Kleinsasser does play and share the receptions with Wiggins, i might have to shop for another TE… But if not, Wiggins could become a premium red zone target for Culpepper. I don't expect him to get 700+ yds again this year, but something around 500 yds and 5 TDs would certainly do the trick. There was still few interesting gamble worthy in the TE department and could have waited until the last round... But no1 really did stand out and i thought i should pick my back-ups from now on. Whatever happens from now on, i'll be glad to tell my kids (yet to come) that i was the first with a complete line-up! And no-1 can take that away for me!!! NO-ONE!

14.08 Washington Defense

I wasn't sure what to do with this pick. It was too early to go after the kicker that I wanted. (I wanted Wilkins, but he was chosen just before I was going to pick him). So it was either an IDP or my 2nd defense. I noticed that one team had not chosen a D yet, so I picked a D. This is honestly the only pick I made to block another team.

As it turns out, I think it was a good pick for my team, anyway. Pittsburgh, my 1st D, has a bye on week 4. On week 4, Washington plays Seattle at home. We'll see about Seattle, but it is a home game for my D that week.

15.07 Micheal Turner, RB, SD

I wanted to get my kicker here, but needed some depth at RB and when I saw LT's backup on the board, I couldn't resist. Despite having the best RB on the planet (IMHO), Marty being Marty, will have a brain fart sometime during the year and go to a RBBC. He's been doing it his entire coaching career.

I still remember Christian Okoye and Barry Word when he coached in KC. In 1989, Okoye ran for 1480 yds on 370 tries. The following year he only had 805 yds on 245 carries and Word had 204 for 1015 yds. And the Mack/Byner combo when he coached the Browns in the late 80's. Injuries were not an issue in either situation.

All that said, keep an eye on **** ****, the rookie speedster.

THIS is 15.07. Turner is 16.08.

My last memory of Engram is of him dropping a game winning TD pass in a playoff game last year. Not a great pass, but one he should have cradled. Such is life for a Seattle reciever. He now becomes a candidate for back up to DJ, since **** **** has drank his career into the slammer.

At this point he is probably just holding a roster spot for my 1st FA pickup unless he produces early and often.

Toral, I recently edited the initial post to add scoring for a quick reference.

Culdeus, we talked about it but Guru said Fanball wouldn't support it. Then, around week 3 we realized it was scoring for IDP, so Guru allowed the changed but subtracted the previous points.

In the original thread from Guru this is what he said, "This thread is for the organization of the 2005 Qualifing Leagues for the (2006) RIFC...The purpose of Qualifying Leagues is to allow managers to earn their way to the next level. Each Qualifying League will be structured with the same configuration and rules as the RIFC."

From post #118 in our initial thread: from Holt - we will mirror the RIFC rules as closely as possible. actually - we may even do it better than the RIFC. from what I understand they aren't able to include blocked punts in their blocked kicks category (which was their intent). we will be able to do this with aol.

I drafted based on those statements above from other threads. Otherwise, Azumah belongs on no RIFC roster.

it's just that fanball's scoring system is worded very poorly.
keep in mind that when fanball says 'Offensive Players', it's actually referring to IDP's as well .

compare our league set-up to RIFC's and you'll see that it's identical.

this is where the confusion came from last season.

for anyone who wasn't aware that IDP's receive points for returns, all I can say is that you haven't been reading the rifc or our own discussion threads thoroughly. this was an issue last season. it was discussed in the rifc and clarified again this season, and I'm sure the topic came up in our own discussion.

anyway, if all you have to go by is the 'League Rules' page at the league site, then it is pretty much impossible to decipher that IDP's are credited for returns, so I can understand why someone would think that they're not. but - it's been discussed so much in so many different threads I've just assumed that everyone was aware of this. it's even mentioned in rationale threads.

anyway, if all you have to go by is the 'League Rules' page at the league site, then it is pretty much impossible to decipher that IDP's are credited for returns, so I can understand why someone would think that they're not.

Precisely, I remember this being an issue and I just sort of figured it was impossible to give them the points. I never looked into it past that. Oh well.

ugh. this is dumb.

i made the pick for Culdeus, and i got NO stop sign when i made the pick.

it appears that MJD33333 quite possibly ran the stop sign when he picked "Washington Defense" instead of "Washington Redskins". it appears he did it for both of his defenses.

can we fix those?

also, Culdeus would like reggie williams wr jax instead of Washington.

can someone make this change?

16.13 Labrandon Toefield, RB, JAX

Another reach, thinking that if Taylor goes down… Also i read some good report about this guy, nothing else was really amazing… the last few player i target as back-ups would probably go undrafted, so i don't really care about if it is a reach or not from now on

Wasting little time after his release by the Cincinnati Bengals one day earlier, wide receiver Peter Warrick on Wednesday afternoon signed a one-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks and TB's RIFC AAA Fantasy team, despite avid interest from other teams.

It is also believed that Warrick will return punts for the Seahawks and TB, who have been seeking to add another veteran wideout.

I thought Mike V might grab Taylor as his hand-cuff, but he didn't. Three years in a row I have drafted Taylor on at least one fantasy team. Last year he even got some starts on my seriously injured team. I am not wishing any evil on Lewis, but has he even played any preseason games yet? I was planning on drafting Norcutt on the turn but you snatched him right after I picked Green.

Warrick was not who I wanted in this last spot, but what the heck. I think I will use what I posted above for my rationale if we ever start putting placeholders and decide to finish posting them. I keep writing mine, but am thinking it is a waste of time.

I understand the feeling, but don;t give into it. I'm way behing in my rationales, but I'm involved in a couple of very intense drafts, quick pix. I luv reading yours (I loved the "before Rod Smith" rationale -- 'he couldn't pick him because he would have 2 guyz in the same bye week!')

I'll be catching up my rationales when this very intense period ends.

I commished an RIBC-AAA league in 2004, and I sent rationale warnings, encouragements, once warned folks that they could be thrown out of the league if they didn't do rationales, etc. Didn't work.

What might work here is what Christians would call gentle but firm supplication, advising managers that people would like to read their rationales (which is true) and so they might want to consider doing them.

I initially wanted a dome kicker, Jeff Wilkins, in particular, but my gamble to get him here fell 2 picks short. After looking at Stover a little closer, I'm actually very pleased. 12.07 Reche Caldwell, WR, SD
an up-side pick. big play threat. he's listed at WR3 right now but I don't think that will last too long. I don't care what the depth chart says now - he's a WR1.
I don't know how far he would have fallen but this was farther than I could stand.
he fell off the radar because of last year's knee injury, but he's fine now.
great moves and speed, and he can't be double-teamed because of gates and tomlinson.

13.08 Tyrone Calico, WR, TEN
I don't really need him but I think he'll have a good year. I had my eye on him for several rds and at this point in the draft there was no one else that I felt strongly about.
I do have a lot of WR's, but I'd like to make a trade or two this year and depth is what gets deals done.
a lot of people think he has big potential and who am I to argue wit that? in his rookie season he did show that he has a nose for the endzone. 10 td's or more isn't out of the question.

14.07 Brian Griese, QB, TAM
still needed a backup QB and he's the only one I could stomach other than maybe Big Ben.
I don't think he would have lasted another round. I hope I only have to start him one time, but if culpepper does go down I feel I still have a chance to win with Griese (as opposed to Boller).
his 97.5 passer rating last year is nothing to sneeze at.

15.08 Brandon Jacobs, RB, NYG
a handcuff pick, but I like this guy. he's humongous but is also blessed with great speed.
read a little from Brandon's diary.

Blame it on the few beers I have consumed this evening, but I have to wonder why you are posting your 12.07 rationale in here when the rationale thread has been stuck at 12.05 for the last three days? You are not only one spot away, meaning put in one placeholder and post your rationale, but you are also the commish. I think the three of us that have put about 90% of the placeholders should be able to take a break while the 7-8 owners who have yet to put one for another owner go ahead and build the other 121 placeholders.

TB - I know you're upset about the way rationales have gone in this league, but I'd like to remind you that this isn't the RIFC. I've never seen rationales go smoothly in any of the invitational minor leagues, so don't take it out on me.
if you want the full-fledged rationale experience I suggest that you win this league and move on to the RIFC where they are required. they are nice to see in the minor leagues but they are voluntary. whatever free time I have now is going to be spent adding players to rosters and entering this season's schedule. adding dozens of placeholders that won't be used isn't real high on my list of priorities.

I just re-read post 212 and am curious why you have to make the schedule. Is there not an option for the site to generate a schedule? If they are using fanballs software it seems like it would be generated for us. I thought a couple times during the draft it would be nice to see how I was matching up against my weekly opponents (an option with DD) and wished a schedule was already generated. I shot an email to aol and asked them why it was not an option.

BTW, If I really have to play Wiggs this year, I want it to be on week 10. =)

Well, at least we know aol support will give us a quick response:

Original question/comment: FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE MANAGER: I am curious how come we have our league set-up and there isn't a schedule. Does the commish have to manually make a schedule or does he have the option to request that you automatically generate a schedule? Thanks in advance for your response.

Response

Date: 9/3/05 12:13 AM
Kinsey replied: Thanks for the email. You can set up a default schedule by clicking on Schedule Setup under the Commissioner tab and then clicking on Setup Default Schedule. You will pick the number of weeks that you want your Regular Season to be.

If you would like to manually set up the schedule you will go to Schedule Setup and then click on View/Edit Schedule. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

they do have a default schedule for normal head to head but for some reason they don't have one for double-headers. RIFC has to make up their own schedule as well.

1. go into the "Schedule setup" under the commissioner controls.

2. go back into the "Schedule setup" under the commissioner controls."

10.04 T. J. Duckett, RB, Atl

At this point my preference for picking up useful backups before starting on IDPs shows itself. As a goal-line back Duckett is a reasonable play if RB-challenged even when Dunn is healthy and becomes very valuable if Dunn goes down.

11.11 Justin McCareins, WR, NYJ

Good things are being said about the possibility of McCareins benefitting from being reunited with his old offensive coordinator in Tennessee, and with #1 receiver in New York being of dubious quality, I like McCareins as my WR 4.

12.04 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, DEF

It seemed time to grab a satisfactory D even though 12 or so were already gone, in case people began snatching up a 2nd D. This was an underperforming defence last year but unlike many I see a bounceback despite age and defections. Indianapolis, the other choice I considered here, went the very next pick.

13.11 Travis Taylor, WR, Minn

Lots of IDP value left so they can wait one more round. A pick that may seem quirky to many here as I grab the perennially inderachieving Taylor. Yet he has the #2 job over [undrafted player] and some person or persons are going to have a massive year in this offence. Burleson is the heavy favourite, but Taylor cannot be ruled out.

14.04 Antonio Pierce, LB, NYG

The Giants' middle linebacker has had near or over 100 tackles for 3 years in a row. Only question about him is whether Washington's fabulous defensive schemes last year made him look better than he is.

ATTENTION:

just in case any slackers haven't noticed, the first NFL game of the season is on THURSDAY. this is WEDNESDAY.

that means you might want to start thinking about checking your roster.

___________

I have our complete schedule charted out and I'm in the process of entering it into AOL. week 1 opponents are now in place.
