0 Subject: RIFC AA - "Hindsight is 20/20" Draft Recap

Posted by: Smith32
- [117461816] Sat, Sep 03, 2005, 16:00

RIFC AA Managers - You are each invited (though not required) to post your general reflections on the completed draft. Comments may be as detailed or as general as you wish. As a catalyst, feel free to comment on any of the following:

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Non-managers are also welcome to post general comments on the draft, and to raise questions.

1. What was my plan/strategy? Was I able to execute it?
My strategy for most drafts is to get a Top tier RB, and Top 3 QB and another solid starting RB in the first 3 rounds. When the third round ended I had an underrated RB, the #2 QB and a starter on a RBBC. Now I have an injured RBBC and not his backup. UGH. I wanted to fill in WR and TE in the next 4 rounds and I think i did pretty good with that. I have never played with IDPs before so I didn't know when to take them. My IDPs average out to be 12th round picks. I don't know if that's good or not, but I'll have to see if Peppers can get 30 sacks like I am hoping! HA HA.
2. Favorite Pick? One I want to do over again?
Clearly, my Daunte pick in the 2nd round surprised me. I thought he'd be gone before that. I also liked the 3 WRs I got in the 4th-6th rounds. If I could have one pick over I would have taken anyone over Lee Suggs. I was actually hoping JJ Arrington would fall to me and some WRs would come off the board in the early 3rd round. Didn't happen. Now I am stuck with Derrick Blaylock starting in Week One.
3. Who's team do I like?
Frick is clearly expierenced at this whole draft thing. He has a very good team and a great bench. He has the strongest bench in the league, so he will not be hurting during the bye weeks. I like DaBomb's team too. I am not too sure of his IDPs, but his RB combo is the tops in this league. JTSerb has a great defense, and they say defense wins championships. Do they win Fantasy Football championships? I don't know we'll have to find out. I feel everyone in the league has a fighting chance, except me.
4. What surprised me?
I have been doing this for 5 years now, and I have never seen a RB rush like this one. 23 RBs in the first 3 rounds SHOCKED me. Also seeing Ray Lewis go in the second round had me worried that IDP were more important than I thought. Luckily another IDP didn't go until the 5th round. So I wasn't too worried about getting who i wanted.
5. If I could start over...
I would take Mike Anderson at the 3.09 spot. Yah right. I am not that psycic. But I would have probabaly taken a RB at the 2.06 pick and used my 3.09 pick on a decent 2 tier QB. But Daunte was just so tempting. Let's hope he throws for 51 TDs and Manning throws for 52 (Just because I cannot root against the best QB of alltime).

Just some Insight for how I feel:
BEST QB: GolfFreak
BEST RB COMBO: DaBomb
BEST WR TRIO: Kyle
BEST OVERALL DEF: JTSERB
STRONGEST BENCH: FRICK

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
Going in with the 5th pick I knew I was going to draft a stud RB. It happend to be Deuce and I am happy with that. For my second pick I wanted another RB, but didn't like my options so I took Chad Johnson. The rest of the picks I didnt really ahve a plan, but decided to see what the draft conditions were like and what their was a run on.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?
Ricky Williams at 7.05 could be a major steal if he starts.
Chicago Bears D will be a top 3 Defense this year and I think in round nine they were a good value.
If i could do it over I wish I would have drafted a better WR core. I have Chad Johnson and thats it really. Glenn or Bryant could step up, but they are average at best.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

I really don't see any stand out team in this league and that means it was a solid draft. Everyone has advatages at certain positions, but I think it will come down to waiver wire pick ups and sleeper picks. Of course injuries will devistate some teams (hopefully not me :)

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Number one suprise was 2.12 ray lewis, lb, bal
I never did a draft with IDP's, but just seems like he was taken way to high. When Ray Lewis is drafted before Donovan Mcnabb something just isnt right about that.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Send some more que's out :) I appreciate everyones patience with me.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

My strategy always is to get the best value available, and fill-in the gaps in rounds 10+. I did have Moss targeted when I selected the 13th spot, and so that worked out. Overall, I made some mistakes but I think I ended up with a team that should be competitive and has a lot of potential. I had never drafted IDPs, so that was a learning experience for me, but I am happy with the 5 I got.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

My favorite picks are 2.02 Julius Jones and 20.02 Eric Coleman. I don't think I really "stole" anyone, but I got most of my guys later than where they went in the other (RIFC and AAA) drafts.

I guess time will tell if the Drew Brees pick was dumb. He was definitely a good value there, but having the same bye as Palmer creates a situation that I probably should have avoided. I would probably also select a different draft position - perhaps 4th or 5th.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Maybe it is just because I drafted right before/after them and they took my targets, but I am not looking forward to playing Cressida and S_R - both of their teams look pretty solid. I agree that Frick's team looks good, but TE is an achilles heel for him (likewise with my team) and we have no idea what JJ Arrington will bring to the table. Russeldl has a good bit of talent as well, especially if McNabb repeats his #s from last season. There is no team that I view as an easy pair of wins.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Definitely the level of research/expertise shown by nearly everyone in our league. IMO, we had the fewest "reaches" of any of the 4 RIFC drafts on the boards. I primarily used the Draft Dominator and VBD spreadsheet, especially for my IDPs, so maybe everyone else did too and that is why I felt there were so few reaches:) I can't wait to see how it shakes out.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

See part 2 of #2.

As a rebuttal to Kyle's assessment - my team isn't the best, but I'll take Moss/Jackson/Branch/R. Smith or Harrison/Wayne/Clayton over your WR trio. And while Frick has a good starting lineup, I don't see that he'll be sitting a whole lot of talent on the bench. Otherwise, I agree with your QB, RB and DEF "bests".

1 What was my plan/strategy and was I able to execute it?
a. My overall strategy was to emphasize offense early and often, thereby deliberately holding off on defense, both team defense and IDP (unless Baltimore or New England became exceptional value picks (I am not criticizing where any of my fellow managers selected them...just a little too early from me)).

b. Having participated in a RIFC qualifying league last year, I anticipated the HUGE run on RB’s at the start of the draft. As I was left with the 11th pick in the first round, I had hoped that Randy Moss would be selected in the first 10 (to me, it was a given that Peyton Manning would be selected in the top 10...and, as an aside, I was also praying that Daunte Culpepper would also be selected in that top 10). Using ADP’s as a measuring stick, I was banking on Corey Dillon being on the table when my turn rolled around at #11. No such luck...my consolation prize: Clinton Portis (Jon Jansen is healthy, so I’m hoping this roll of the dice works out well.). Parenthetically, I find it very ironic that, after the first two picks this year, the money position (RB) in fantasy football is a true crapshoot. Yet, IMHO managers were left with no choice but to select them early and often.

c. I planned on waiting a little longer than most for a TE, until very late for a K and had further decided to forego a QB until exceptional value, IMO, appeared. Brooks in the eighth was that value. (However, in the wake of Katrina, who now knows about any Saints players). Despite selecting him in the eighth and that I considered him to be exceptional value, for reasons that follow in this rant, Brooks may only start but a quarter of my fantasy games anyway. The only other QB that I had targeted at any point early in the draft was Carson Palmer (if he were available at 6.04!). Palmer wasn’t…making it easy to select Priest’s handcuff: Larry Johnson (IMHO, if Priest were injured while the draft took place, LJ would have been a top 5 pick).

2 What were your favourite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?
a. I’m a JETS fan and Curtis Martin is the horse in New York. Here’s hoping CuMar stays healthy and puts up the 12 TD’s he scored last year along with 1300+ yards.

b. The rationale behind 1c.: Having watched all of the Titans preseason games on the NFL Network, Steve McNair is healthy (people easily forget that he was a co-MVP two years ago and not too long ago, he was a fantasy stud), says that he is in the best shape of his life and the Titans defense is horrendous. I had targeted McNair before the draft and was happy to land him in the 10th round.

c. Like fellow manager Smith32, I have two QB’s with the same bye week. That being said, if I could do it all over again, I don’t know if I would change anything LOL; perhaps I would select Chad Pennington instead of Aaron Brooks (although I don’t think my heart could handle Abraham, the JETS defense, CuMar and Penny on my fantasy team). Not yet sure how I will address my QB situation; it will not rear its ugly head until week 10, however.

d. See also 3b. that follows.

3 Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
a. Will let you know at the end of the year. ;-) In all seriousness, parity reigns supreme; I see strengths and weaknesses at some positions on every team.

b. I also found that I began targeting certain players, only to see them taken just before me numerous times. The lesson in all of this: if you really like someone, take them while they are still on the board.

4 What surprised you most about the draft?
a. As stated earlier, I participated in a qualifier last year. During that draft, Ray Ray was selected in the 3rd or 4th round IIRC. As such, I was not surprised when mike selected him in the second.

I was again pleasantly surprised at the level of knowledge, preparation, etc. of those that choose to participate in the RIFC and RIFC qualifiers.

5 If you could start over, would you do anything differently?
In hindsight, I would have selected my last IDP before the last round. Also see 2c. and 2d.

---------------------------------------------
I feel it necessary to add the following preface to my entire draft. Last year, I anticipated that trades would occur during the fantasy football season as injuries occurred and breakout players emerged. However, that did not happen in the RIFC qualifier that I participated in (only one trade took place during the entire regular season). I drafted this year with this in mind, hoping to be able to field a competitive fantasy football team without any trades whatsoever, if that scenario unfolded again. Time will tell if the managers in this league manage in the same manner.

I apologize for the length of this entire post. However, ask a lawyer his opinion…

PS. If any of the participants of the RIFC read this rant, I would like to point out that, IMHO, the additional IDP position added this year really made a difference as far as depth goes concerning elite IDP er’s. During the thread discussing the rule changes for this year, it almost seemed like an afterthought. Time will tell, but I believe that it will be very rewarding to those that really research IDP’s.

ok here goes with ray lewis (I'll do my full post later)

I was in a IDP league once before. there I made lewis my 2nd round pick and it worked out very well.

I went to work that night and I was on deck. had 3 players I was considering. lamont jordan, terrell owens and ray lewis. decided to take jordan if he was available. got home and of course he was gone. I wussed out on taking owens right then so took lewis.

my defense
-lewis is a stud and had done well for me before
-was hoping that by taking the first IDP that it would get people thinking and that some more offensive players would fall to me.

however...

-upon further reflection I took him too early. should of waited for 4/5. I thought about the previous league and we started 3 at each defensive group, making the top guys more valuable there then here.
-no run, no guys really falling to me. was worth a shot

nothing like some sober second thought (stealing a canadian political theme, I was sober for most picks by the way for the record)

however I am happy with lewis. may he sack all of your qbs many, many, many times

The lack of ESPN here is killing me. My roommate and I need to get cable in this room or I am going to kill someone.
Smith32 I couldn't help but notice that of all the worst values on the board, 4 of them are mine, and the only player I have for best values is Leftwich in Round 10 (lumped in with "All the QBs")
I may have been a little biased and on second look your WR are also really good, but on Slackjawed's WR: While Harrison and Wayne are good, you will never had a good week from both of them. You will always see the statline say 7rec for one and like 2-3rec. I try to stay away from picking 2 WR from the same team since I had Bruce and Holt 3 years ago. I would start them both and get a better preformance from one of my bench guys than on of my STL WR. While all this BS may blow up in my face and week-in week-out Wayne and Harrison will each have 5Rec 100yrds and a TD, I will tip my hat to Slackjawed.

You'd be surprised how little research I put into this draft. Or maybe you won't... hehe I've never been that great at fantasy football. Baseball is my forte.

Anyways, I went in knowing that RB's would go early and often, but I was surprised how often. Unproven rookies and second-year players flying off the board in round 2 and 3 really surprised me. I tend to go with more established players when I draft, and this draft was no different.

I might have reached a little bit on Tony Gonzalez in round 3, but he seemed to be just as good as all the WR still available. Likewise, Rodney Harrison might have been reach at 7 but he's as good as any LB. Having dealt with IDP's quite often in the past, and having much more success with them then offensive players, I felt very comfortable with how I drafted them. My best pick might end up being Pennington at 10, especially if Brady gets hurt. I also like Westbrook alot this year.

My team may be great or may be really bad. Alot of my players are at stages of their careers where they start to decline. If it happens this year, I'm in big trouble. If they play up to their 3-year averages, I will be competing for the playoffs.

I have s_R as the top ranked team, followed by Slack JawedYokel and GolfFreak. Those 3 teams are bunched fairly closely and a bit of fall-off and the rest of the teams are pretty closely bunched.

SlackJawed Yokel, is going to be tough, but Team 14 and Juking Safeties got a huge break by facing him in week 8, when almost half his team has a buye.

Kyle only has 3 WR, but alot of depth at IDP. No offense Kyle, but you also have 2 PK and 2 TE. I personally would have rather had a another WR than a back-up PK. You can always grab a PK of the waiver wire for your kickers bye week.

Letter_J, you only have 3 IDP's and we start 4, 1DL, 1LB, 1DB and 1 Flex. You might want to talk to Kyle.

As for as my TE situation, I had a couple of guys targeted, but they were picked right before I was going to take them. I wasn't expecting teams to take 2 TE's. Hopefully after the season starts to shake out I can make a trade to upgrade that area or getting lucky and hit the waiver wire. Who knows, other than Gates and Gonzalez the TE position is almost worth punting most weeks.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE.

Make sure you set your line-up before Thursday. The league rules state that you can change your players until 5/15 minutes before kick-off, but it doesn't hurt to set your line-up early to make sure it is set.

The AOL interface is kind of confusing, go to Transactions, Set Line-up. It took me a couple of seconds to find it.

I don't think you can pick-up free agents before the start of the season, so you will have to either post here or e-mail me if you want to pick up a player. Remember all players are on waivers this week until 12:00 tomorrow.

John Abraham, DL, NYJ
Antonio Pierce, LB, NYG
Michael Boulware, DB,
Andra Davis, LB, CLE

Problem?

Frick I am also confused. Unless you don't count Jabaar Gaffney as a WR, because his status of injury is questionable (he will in most senerios play week one and be fine for the season) I have my 3 WR and a backup, and noone has the same bye out of the 4 of them. I have some depth at IDP, but I really don't want to get rid of the 3LBs and 2DBs I have in case of injury. I am hoping that i will be able to drop A-Train after Suggs comes back, A-Train is there only if my team decides to implode and Rudy gets hurt, that's the only possible reason i see Train getting a start. But if suggs isn't back by week 5 i will be offering trades gallore for someone decent. I really liked Suggs before the draft because his last 3 games last year he rushed for around 400 yards and have over a 4YPC average. I liked that, now I hate ankles. Even mine are sore from ultimate frisbee and football. Wow my team is in shambles before week one. FUN!
PS- Come on Curtis Martin get hurt allready. I mean there is no shame in missing week one for me so Blaylock starts.

Frick, I think the roster setup is a little screwy. It says you can start a minimum of one or maximum of two for each IDP position. So I tested that and right now I believe that I have both my LBs and DBs starting, when there should only be one extra IDP.

It showed up as a orange message right under my line-up and also said that my starting line up had not been changes.

Correct, although if you want to claim someone before noon today, send me an e-mail. Currently all players are on waivers. After noon today all players will be free agents.

I forget when players go back onto waivers, but I think all players are on waivers until Tuesday or Wednesday noon.

What this means is, if you are watching the games with no internet access and you see a starting QB or RB go down, you have just as much of a chance to pick up that player via waiver claims as the person who is on the computer and tries to scoop him up.

Personally, this one of my favorite features of this league, I hate when one guy sits on the computer all day on Sunday and picks up back-ups when a starter goes down and tries to extract a blood price out of the owner of the injured starter.

I've been outta town for a while so I have not commented much on the boards. I'm at work now and frankly don't have the time but will mention a few things.

1) I was expecting the RB run and absolutely hate myself for picking Tinkerbell, although I think he'll end up with the job at some point in time. Nevertheless, I should have handcuffed Anderson sooner but waited too long. As for now, this licks ball sweat! I also have Henry whom I think could wind up with the job in Tennesse also, so I may have been reaching a bit too much instead of taking reliable players.

2) I passed on TO and took Joe Horn. TO is now back with the Eagles and Horn will likely have little to no "home games". This also sucks, although I am not going to get upset about a fantasy football team when others have lost their lives, families or entire personal belongings (perspective is everything).

3) I was very surprised at the Ray Ray pick and even Urlacher for that matter.

4) Everyone's team looks threatening to me... you know what they say about any given Sunday.

5) To defend my Vick pick, well, I am expecting him to rush for a bunch of yards every game and to run in some TD's (6 points instead of 4) instead of having majoritarily reception TD's. That's all I have.

Wish I could chat more but I have to go.

Good luck to all,

Oh, and the Rolling Stones were f_ckin amazing for those of you whom are wondering!

During the regular season, dropped player becomes available: 48 hours after player is dropped.
During the preseason, league members are allowed to make their own trades:
Never

Why can't we just pick up FA and make trades now by ourselves?

And then under the scoring setup it lists return yards only for offensive players and team defenses, not under the IDPs though. Frick, was there an option to do this under IDPs?

And if waivers is over now and FA are available, I would like to pick up James Hall, DE, Det and drop Jerramy Stevens, TE, Sea.

Frick i sent you an add/drop for free agency. Smith I am willing to listen to your trade offers. I will also offer up any of my WR for any other starting RB.
