0 Subject: During draft discussion thread

Posted by: sarge33rd
- [575352217] Fri, Jul 21, 2006, 11:09

Another brought forward a valid point. If we post "discussions" in the draft thread as we go, it does make it much more difficult to sort through and find current bids, etc.

With that in mind, (and I'm guilty too), I'd ask that any discussion(s) be posted here, and the draft thread be restricted to bids or directly relevant to bid posts.

ok. It does get tough sometimes, trying to keep up with who is who, when handles and team names bear no correlation hat-so-ever. :)

re pricing - the top backs are worth the money in that area. I don't know if all the other guys (TEs) are there because I haven't opened my price-sheet today.
I would have been burned if I got all 3 "super"-stars, but otherwise if I really got them all 3 for that less money, I'd be very happy.

I am on my way home now. lets see when I can post again.

I can easily understand the fantasy of a backfield comprised of;

QB: P Manning
RB: L Johnson
RB: S Alexander

But what a turn-around that would be for you budget wise from last year!!!!!! (I mean, you didnt spend all that much more than the 123 you bid on those 3, for your whole damn team last season.)

I am Loco Ochenta y Ocho, indeed.

Also, wiggs' bid of $22 on TO is not valid as I bid $22 on him earlier. For all the good that will do me.

Thats Beez

I already pointed out in the thread that you had the high bid on Owens.

Question that it begs to ask.

Do we want to point out miss bids or not?????

There is a strategy toward having somebody misbid and you winning....

Sarge, curious minds want to know.....

to that I'd say yes. That is a directly bid related post. Again, only Wiggs or myself can declare a player as "won" and there is then the contestment period for the holder of another bid which may have been overlooked, to speak up. Lacking such a contestment, we'll declare the win as "final" and call for a new player to the board.

ISP is working again.

sarge - I just checked last years team. I used only $159 for the whole team and that with using $57 for Priest, so basically the team that won the league was worth $102. It would have been a different strategy if I had won all 3 of them, but in an auction league you simply have to take the risk to raise bids for players you don't really want, if it is a risk at all in this case.

I'll update daily at a minimum. Midday and thelike, will depend largely on time available.

Yes, I have virtually unlimited access while at work, but I'm in retail and can have customers come in w/o notice and tie up my time for anhour or better each occurance.

As for pointing out repeat bids...its upto you. If you want to, feel free. Nobody is saying "dont". Just saying that I dont see it as "fair" if I sometimes do and sometimes dont. Since I cant swear to being able to keep up all the time, I dont see how I could fairly do so.

I got a valid question.....

You set a starting date for the draft.....yet those last 3 spots you named to the board may not even know we've kick started it and now the board has sold 2 players in the first 9 hours of the clock without the confirmation that everyone's here yet?

I can't say that for sure because not everyone has bid yet, I've been just watching it so who really knows for sure?

I sent league wide emails day before yesterday, reminding people of when the draft would begin. In the pre-draft discussion thread, I indicated when the draft would begin and when the nomination of players had to be completed. That time came and went, with 3 unnamed spots. So I filled them.

As I said in my "greeting" on the league homepage...I'll make decisions which are consistent. I said when we would begin...and thats when we began. I said when nominations had to be completed, and at that time, I completed them. Nothing at all inconsistent there.

sarge - JAX D is able to score around 280pts this year. good RBs that are able to score the same amount will be worth in the $30-$40 range. even the depth at RB (without the top3) and D seems to be the same. I think getting something like the 5th best defense for $8 is fair value.

Yahoo Sports reports Reggie Bush is considering sitting out the 2006 season and re-entering the 2007 NFL Draft.
Contract talks between the Saints and Bush have reportedly been non-existent and it's nearly a lock the Heisman winner will hold out. Bush is believed to have banked more than $5 million from endorsement deals that are guaranteed whether or not he plays in 2006. Though it seems unlikely, the theory is that Bush doesn't need the money he'd receive from a rookie contract and would still be a high pick in next year's draft. Jul. 22 - 12:38 am et

Source: Jason Cole, Yahoo! Sports

No. 2 overall pick and Heisman Trophy-winning running back Reggie Bush not only appears headed for a holdout with the New Orleans Saints, a league source said Bush is toying with the idea of sitting out the entire season and going back in the draft in 2007 if he doesn't get his price.

"No player has ever had the kind of leverage that Reggie Bush has right now," the source said. "The Saints made it clear what they were willing to do before and now we'll see if they're going to get there."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

"Toying" with the idea and the idea being remotely likely are two different things. As the article states, Bush is in a financial position to do something like this as he's banked more than five million dollars so far with marketing deals. His agent, Joel Segal declined to comment on Friday.

My opinion is this is 100% pure media manipulation. I'd be shocked if Reggie Bush was anything but signed in the near future. A holdout is probable. That often happens with players drafted in the spot he was. But this story to me just sound like Segal playing the media.

I think YR meant talks like talks of him holding out for sure. Not negotiations. Not sure but anyway....

With the fact him and the family will still eventually be charged and potentially still looking at prison time, don't take lightly what is being said.

The fall out will get real heavy when USC has to forfeit every game he ever played in.

I take Gates for 24. Have him projected to be about equal to Chambers in terms of production/points. Difference is, Chambers is one of 6 or 7 WR's I rank at about the same level. Gates on the other hand, should out produce any other TE in the league, by 20% or better.

I'm back from watching my Vienna Vikings win the Eurobowl 41:9 against Paris. it is the 3rd time in a row that we won the european title. it may be intersting to see them play against a NFL/NFL-europe-team to see the difference between european and american football.

I meant that there are lots of discussions about the situation in NO. I have read through a some Saints message boards and think that there is a high possibility that Bush signs. only time will tell.

i think gates was a very good buy. honestly, and i know this is sad but the only reason i didn't bump him is because i am just not a TE person. i know the 1 TE i want to have on my roster and a cheapy backup and that is it...nice buy though.

truth be told, I wasnt trying to buy him. :) I had him at $27 value and as a TE I figure 90% of value as top bid, and then only for THE top player at the position. That pegged my max bid, at $24. *shrug* (I wasnt but trying to bump him to where I figured he shoulda been.)

While I'm thinking on it...I'd much prefer to not see another post like #74. If you want to bid to keep a player on the board, thats all well and good. #1) That was not the intention of the post. I was merely pointing it out, like a 15 minute thing that is done in the auction threads.

#2) I am not upping my own bid on Chambers as Beezer bid in the old thread after it had closed. If that bid is not valid, then I do not want to have my $25 bid stand.

I had bid $23 at 23:06 yesterday before the thread closed post, so that was a valid bid. Thus $25 is the right number for Chambers right now.

Regarding post 74, I believe the 15 minute posts in the bid threads are for when the 8 hours has elapsed so others can confirm that there have not been any missed bids before the player is awarded. The Gates post in 74 was done before the 8 hour window was up, so someone who wasn't paying attention could have bid $25 and it would have counted.

I can see why it was viewed as a "bid on Gates" post since the bid window had not closed. I can also see how it was intended as part of an overall update since THK did an all player update at the same time. Fortunately it didn't affect the bidding on Gates so there wasn't an impact.

I, too, would prefer that there not be posts about a player's draft status before they close. It would be a draconian effort to enforce by rule, though, as it could chill a lot of discussion that makes this so interesting. I'd prefer to just ask that it not be done. It's really not needed as there are at least two of us (myself and Goatlocker, and probably others) that can tell you at any moment who's going off and when, so you're not telling me anything I don't already know. :)

My bad. I had overlooked Beezers Chambers bid.

Re the 15 minute posts in the Auction thread...They are as Beezer surmised. The 8 hrs is up and a "winner" is being conditionally declared. That 15 minutes is in the event I overlooked/missed a bid. (As I had done with Beezers Chambers bid. Which was valid btw.)

I certainly dont want to stifle discourse in this thread. Thats why its here. But as for "warnings" onplayers about to come off the board...I sorta see that as part of the "job" of the managers. To "FPA", to borrow a phrase. :)

Speaking of which, I'm off work tomorrow and katie and I will be heading to Austin for some shopping. I wont be around for a good 6 or 7 hours. (3 to 3 1/2 hrs round trip drive time. ) So WIGGS, if you're available, I'll need to ask you to do your best at tracking the ongoing action. I'm sure there are some others here who would be glad to toss in some assistance if you need it!

In any event, since I wont be around much at all tomorrow, I'd ask that everyone be a little patient. I have no clue what anyone elses workload/access is like.

My problem last year was that my highest paid players didn't come through - my budget guys were great (Palmer, McCardell). I didn't want to repeat last year's mistakes - instead, I'd rather make new ones.

Glad I didn't bump DJax again - thought about it though. Didn't want to have RB and WR from the same team, especially if they clinch early and rest guys in week 16. I've got him as a decent bargain on my sheet.

I like to look at the avg $$$ I have left for my remaining players (as I am sure a few do)...and it doesn't look so bad that way.

Beezer has the lowest at $7.08 for remaining players. Wiggs, Frick and JT are close behind.

YR has the most at $13.62 per player.

I am sitting at 10.45 per player - 6th in the league.

I rounded up in my #s because it is natural reaction for me and I am tired...goodnight haha

I was thinking about it sarge...what if nobody points out a missed bid in the 15 minutes because they weren't around. Then they get on later and are upset. Are they screwed because you missed it?

I am not saying you are going to miss any or anything but I am just curious if they are SOL lol. That just wouldn't make sense.

In all things THK, there has to be a defined cut-off. The 15 minutes, dont start until its posted (rarely immediately after the 8 hrs are up but occassioanlly). That 15 minutes, is the last chance to contest a declaration of a winner.

I know I'm watching, Goatlocker is watching, Frick and Beezer are too. I'd sincerely hope, that there are more of us than that, trying to track the happenings. If a bid is missed, ANY manager can point it out, and I'd hope that anyone noticing it would have the sportsmanship and integrity to do so.

In answer to your question though, yes. If its pointed out 16 minutes later, I'm sorry, but thats too late.

The start of this draft could not have been at a worse time for me. I was extremely busy last week and was out of town until late last night. I was able to occasionally poke my head in, but not consistently, there were several players that I really wanted and would have bid more for, but they were gone before I realized it.

Oh well, there are still plenty of options out there at almost any position.

I guess I should just tell myself, PFA.

may not have changed much, cept cause you to spend another 6 or 7 bucks. Look at day 1 bidding. I had no desire, n-o-n-e, to win LT, LJ or SA. I just wanted them over or at $70 each. Didnt quite get to where I wanted them to go, but any more pushing on my part, and I feel I was gonna get stuck with one of them. Are they the best there is? No question. Just that IMHO, I dont play the auction game well enough to justify spending 35% of my budget on 6% of my squad. Be like..

Great buy in McNabb Sarge. If I hadn't gotten LT, you wouldn't have gotten him so cheap. I expect him to put up numbers similar to 2 years ago, which would make him an absolute steal compared to Manning.

Butthead now owns two of the most over-paid RBs in the league IMO: McGahee and JJ.

I am a Dallas fan but I think they are closer to RBBC than JJ being a superstar.

I was laughing at Butthead's picks last year too, until we got to playoff time and he was in while I was on the couch. Julius at the flex position is a lot better than I'll be doing, I can tell you that.

He's got an eye for talent and doesn't care if he overpays if he wants a guy bad enough IMO. There's a lot to be said for getting the guys you think will perform if you believe in them enough.

***********************************************

I posted that I would stop the clock, if we go lite by 5 players. The reason is....with 12 on the board, maangers have to pick and choose who they will bump and who they will try and buy. With 5 names empty, those slots are not impacting the strategy behind the bidding the way they would if they were occupied. I know this wasnt discussed, it simply hadnt crossed my mind, but it is a necessary part of the strategy/planning/execution.

Admittedly, the 4 we are nowlite, 3 of them came within 5 minutes of midnight. No harm, no foul. Hopefully, those slots will be filled beofre the clock starts at 0800 tomorrow morning.:)

Wanted to add too, you guys have been good. We're moving right along and IMHO, making MUCH better time than I seem to recall us doing last year.

Beezer-
Belief doesn't put points on the board. I don't know how the rest of his team will come together but right now I think he has put himself in a bad spot. Of course...my situation isn't perfect either.

PS- No offense of course Butthead...

About 1/3 of the rosters are filled and just over $1000 is out there in total funds, so the rest of this draft should go pretty quickly. Heck, I think Cadillac was still at Auburn when he was first posted. :) Great progress so far.

I'm good with the freeze at five plan as that definitely does have an impact. I think we'll see guys posted before another sale completes so it shouldn't be a factor, but it's best to be prepared.

Didn't we have to start over last year due to one of the managers quitting. Plus didn't we have a debacle with having individual player threads the first time through?

Overall, I agree that the draft is moving smoothly.

Suspending the bidding as well. Dont need to try and keep updating bids, when the board is under 60% populated. Once the board has 12 names again, we'll figure out the time gap, adjust, and restart.

Restarted at 0840 and resuspended at 0853. Thats another 13 minutes.

23 minutes total time off the clock today.

Wont get there until Tue night the 8th, so thats 2 days w/o access at all. Then while there, limited access and the return would be 2 more days w/o access. it really isnt the RB problem...it is the fact that if you go for the WRs first on the board they are inflated way too much. i see WRs i have valued just under my guys going off way cheaper....

i like my group and if my RB plans work out according to my plan i think ill have a top team, but i definitely made some mistakes this year...

Maybe your rankings are that bad :)

Or they fit into a manager's draft plan.

D's are tough in this league. After the top 2 this year, I see a big decrease, other than the bottom 3 or 4 they are pretty similar. Where they differ at is the schedule. In other leagues spinning between Ds based on match-ups works, that doesn't work in this league with cost of picking up free agents.
