well thanks JT, for both. :)

In the "Best Biy" category, I see 3 pretty damn good ones out there. (IMHO) In no certain order (wont really know that till the season is over)

McNabb for 19
Jordan for 29
Brooks for 9

Those 3 sorta leap out and grab hold of my attention. What could turn out to be the buy, would be Pepper for 14 if he bounces back. (Or Lewis if he returns to his 03 form.)

As I said earlier, if I hadn't gotten LT, I would have pushed McNabb substantially higher than 19. The Eagles throw 65%+ of the time and I don't see that changing this year.

McNabb wasnt my intended 2nd QB. His acquisition was one of "opportunity". The price I could get him for, was simply too good to not take him IMHO. lol Had to really shuffle/scramble my plans at that point, to adjust to the extra money I put into that slot. (Bledsoe was my intended other QB target. That $10, would come in handy right now, given my target overall expenditures, along with the money I spent on Gates which was supposed to have been a bump bid. lol Oh well.)

*************************************************

OK guys...I'm having serious enough ISP issues here, if I (or Wiggs) post the 15 minutes to point out....thing, and 16 minutes goes by....go ahead and someone close it out and "award" the player to the winning manager. That way, they can name someone to the board and we can keep this rolling along.

Thanks.

Sarge,
You need to look at my post 13.
As best as I can tell bouncing against the draft thread for yesterday, those are the correct times.

All three that you showed as sold still had time left.

I have to go back to my meeting, but trying to help sort this out.

New players
======================
KC def $1
C. Pennington, NYJ, QB, $1
Troy Williamson, WR, MIN?, $1

I don't know if the question mark after Williamson is genius for throwing us off your track on how much you want them, or just plain funny.

p.s. There are a couple of guys that I've had the same thoughts on.

while this will quite obviously backfire-if somebody wins a player and doesnt care who is brought out please contact me so i can bring out a player i want to see what happens on...

WIGGS....when I suspended the clock the other day, THK I think it was had bid while bidding was suspended. I asked him to delete that bid since bidding wasnt open, and he did so. To now treat your submitted bids as valid pending the clock, would be inconsistent with has already been done.

For future reference to all managers: If the clock is suspended and you have to go somewhere and wish for bids to be submitted immediately upon the clocks restarting, posting the bids in the suspended thread is not the way to get it done. You can post there that you are emailing me (or another manager) your bids and then we'd know to look for your email. Then once I have your email I, or that other manager, can submit your bids when the clock restarts.

A bit of a pain I know and for that I'll apologize. This is something, we may need to address, so that in the future, we have an established means of handling it.

yes, that is something we need to discuss. I sat here with my hands tied waiting for other people to submit players, and because they didnt do what they were supposed to I could have lost someone I wanted. I think we should have a rule if someone doesnt submit a player in a timely manner they should be fined or something. This will prevent managers that do things right from being punished in the future.

I would have done the right thing, but my access is basically non existent right now during the day.. I try to keep up, but sometimes I cannot.. I understand where you are coming from Wiggs, but a fine is a little bit to harsh.

doesnt havt to be a big fine, maybe 1 dollar each time you dont submit someone for say like 4 hours. something like that.

I would prefer that if the board goes light at least 4 players that we reopen bidding once we are back up to at least 10 players total. I don't think a fine is appropriate since we didn't really discuss penalties for not nominating in a timely manner when we started. IMO of course.

I dont even want to consider fines for not naming in adefined timeframe, since there will be those who have no access at work. Isnt their fault, they arent being neglectful, just that thats when the bidding on a given player ended and I dont want to have to select who can or cant bid on, based on what time the auction would end.

The reason I kept it closed until the board is full, is because of the way these auctions work. 12 players on the board, "dilutes" the bidding differently than would 8. (Yes, I'm saying to a degree, if we went with an 8 player board vs a 12 player one, prices would end up slightly different.) The first time I suspended the bidding for an overlky lite board, we were lite by 5 and I suspended action until the board was right. This time, we were lite by 6. Granted, BH was in with his 3 right away, but Ihad no way of knowing that was going to happen. I'll refer back to the commish notes on the website....my intent is to be consistent. Always and in all aspects. That way, you folks know what to expect, as well as whats expected. Since I had suspended things at 5-shy, I saw it necessary to do so again at 6 shy.

Thats my rationale. If enough want it done differently, thats fine too. Long as everyone understands the process. :)

Not even asking for your draft strategies, we arent but halfway through afterall, but I am curious as to how many of your acquisitions werent "planned"?

ie, for my part, McNabb and Crumpler. Neither was a planned buy at the point in time when I got them. Both I intended to get when I got them, and in Crumplers case he was an initial intent but that changed when I "won" Gates off a bump bid. Both Crumpler and McNabb, I just saw as going for too little and couldnt see not bidding on them. Changed things up abit on me (I had originally intended my 2 starting RBs to be Barber/Westbrook then A Green and a rookie as backups with Plummer/Bledsoe at QB, but getting McNabb cost me enough to take me out of the serious Westbrook bidding picture.) I'll explain my logic on Green after the auction is over, but suffice for now to say that I got him at precisely the price I had hoped. Less of course would have been nice, but for "strategic" reasons, $10 was the right max price.

I should clarify. I created an initial budget on how much I wanted to spend for each slot on my team. I exceeded those values on all 4 players. None of my players exceeded my estimated value, so they were all discounts relative to my projections.

I dont see Brown accomplishing much. He's been whining to get traded, Bennett went to KC from NO so he's out. I see Brown on the bench by week 3s end and White getting the chance from there. What he does with that chance, will define the "steal" at $4 or the waste of $4. :)

You may bid on whoever you want whenever (not that you need my approval). Doesn't hurt my feelings a bit if someone bids on someone I'm leading on with a minute to go. My intent is not to torture anyone wanting a player - I wait so I can see if anyone else has interest in a guy so I can get a better handle on how much he will go for. I can understand if you feel singled out since I've done it to you twice so I take no offense.

I don't play by unwritten rules - we have 8 hours, and I like to use them. You're a pretty sharp fantasy guy that's built a good team and that I enjoy reading on the boards - if you don't like me because of my actions in this draft, that's all right, and it doesn't make me think any less of you.

I show 4 players as potentially having just been won. The board is lite by one from BEEZERs earlier win of S Moss. Unless BEEZER names 1 to the board before the 15 minutes are up, we'll be lite 5 again, and the bidding/clock will get stopped, as per the last time we were 5 short on the board.

I am pumped with the signing of Reuben at $18 and even more so with KJ at $16. Although I almost had Reuben at $10 and $12...but oh well.

I have Reuben as the #15 RB on my board (but may drop 1-3 slots because of Bentley). Just after Parker and McGahee. Then I have KJ as #16 (with the potential of much higher) above the likes of JJ, Chet Taylor, Tatum Bell (bc of his situation). Whether or not they were as good of signings as I think --- I have two very servicable backs in my opinion with 4 top 12 WRs on my board.

I don't mind what you have Jones ranked out. Not sure how its possible to have him at #29 as he won't be splitting time with anyone -not even on 3rd down. Oh well...I'm excited! :-)

JTSERB may have just gotten THE stealof the draft. From all reports I've read, Dayne is having the kind of trainng camp indicating that he may have the kind of year so many yungguns thought he'd have, when he first came out of college. (How many here remember those old TSN football boards?) We all know Denvers propensity for turning out star RB's. With Dayne passing Bell on the depth charts.....at 5 bucks....damn nice buy JT.

**************************************************

With apologies, we got swamped today at work and form about 10am central on, I have been pretty much buried at work and largely unable to do anymore than just "pop in".

That said, it seems we have a mini-controversy. Yes BH, the clock on LJ Smith ran out at 1600 hrs. And yes, Frick has a point in that virtually none of your posts have been in bold. (As per the "rules".) Not going to change anything now because of it, but in the future (and this goes for ALL bidders), any bid not in bold from this time stamp forward, will not be acknowledged as a valid bid. They will be ignored.

Listing a series of 4 or 5 bids in a single post, slipping a single bid into a post tucked between two series of bids, these are valid ways of trying to "slip one by". As Frick says in his post, thats part of the "strategy" if you will. The bids however, have a format for their submission. Please everyone, follow it.

Thank-you.

BUT,and its a major b-u-t, I do not want to lose any managers over that, so if this is the only way we can do it then so be it. The idea though of having this entire process done in under 3 hrs, sure as hell holds alot of appeal to me.

Sarge, Re: your post 46 in Saturday auction thread

I tried to clear this up earlier concerning the Moulds bid before I left for the night. (See my post 107 in THIS thread). I didnt want it to linger as I thought it might be missed. Wiggs confirmed it. I know your doing all the work here and its very much appreciated. This is not a gripe, I just wanted you to know I tried to fix it earlier. Thanks for all your efforts.

Indeed JH, you did mention it I now see. Unfortunately, it came in the midst of an unreal day at work for me.

Ah well...contrary to what my intent was with the 15 minute delay, I did reverse those erroneous ones earlier. Why?

I was largely unavailable today to monitor the auction, so it had the definitive opportuinty to "free wheel".

I was far enough behind by the time I got home, I obviously got into a hurry trying to update my bid list, team rosters, awarded players....its almost inevitable that something be missed.

There apparently wasnt anyone else on the forum at the time. Rather difficult I think, to expect 15 minutes of review by nobody, to be very productive.

Sometimes, you have to do whats "right by the people" vs whats "right by the rules". All things considered, I saw this as one of those times.

Just a heads up folks...

board is lite by 2,(JH for both), and we have 6 players coming OFF the board at 1600 eastern, unless some bids get put up in the next 40 minutes. This puts the board 8 men lite, and WILL result in a suspension of bidding and the clock until the board is made right again.

OK, I said I'd post my thoughts once my roster is filled, and it is. So here goes some of the “whys” behind what I did/tried to do.

QB: McNabb/Plummer

Original intent was to get Bledsoe/Plummer and had my eye on Brooks as a 3rd option. I figured I could get 2 of these 3, for around $21 total. When McNabb came up, I only had Plummer, and he was priced WELL below where I had him valued. I project him as the nr3 QB in fantasy points by our scoring, so when he was obtainable for under $20....I had no choice really.

RB: T Barber/W Dunn/A Green/L White

Barber is Barber. Ageless. He was targeted as my nr1 RB from the start.

A Green was targeted all along as my nr3 RB. I doubt anyone expects he'll last the entire season, though if he does, at $10, he's a bargain. The $10 is significant for a couple reasons. 1st and foremost, the GB bye week is week 6. So if after week 5, he's hurting, I drop him, I recoup ½ salary, $5, which pays for the Free Agent to replace him. Net result, 1 F/A for no net cost.

Dunn was obtained in replacement of my intended nr2 RB, B Westbrook. When I took McNabb, I was pretty much taken out of serious contention in the bidding for Westbrook. At the time, he was about the best option staill available to me IMHO.

L White, was the “rookie” I was set to gamble on from day 1. I've heard him compared to Eddie George in style and physique. With C Brown whining to be traded, I dont look for White to stay on the bench for all that long. A potential starting RB for under $5????? Gotta do it.

WR: D Driver/L Evans/L Coles

Driver was an intended target from the start. Same with Evans. I like the fact that I see Buffalo playing from behind a lot.

Coles...was a product of my impatience. Because of my roster composition, I had to have a #3 WR whose bye weeks were NOT weeks 3,5,6 or 8. R Smith was my intended target, but he just wasnt getting named to the board and the list of potential WR's was dwindling fast. I couldnt take the chance that I'd have to go higher to get Smith (though I would have), so I bid on Coles. I honestly figured he'd get bid up, and go for around $8.

TE: Gates/Crumpler/Pope

Why 3? Accident. I had no intention of winning Gates at $24. Thats the same he went for last year, and he had a MONSTER year. I had originally targeted Crumpler/Heap and Pope. I rank Crumpler/Heap/Shockey as pretty much evenly tied for the nr3 TE behind Gonzo and Gates.(Though with the recent injury to the KC O-line, Gonzo may fall back to make it a 4-way tie for 2nd.) I project Gates for just over 1000 yds and 11 TD's. In our scoring, thats about the same nr of points I project for H Ward or A Boldin. If my TE is giving me production like that, then thats points nobody else is getting. As much a defensive tool as an offensive one. With our flex options allowing us to run 2 TE's, I can use Gates as a poor mans stud WR, while using Crumpler (one of the better TEs in the game) to offset my opponents TE scoring. Pope, is a rookie in AZ. From everything I've read, he'll make for a solid fill-in during bye weeks and he was only $1.

K: M Nugent. Lol I had no intention of winning this guy. I named him, to take a K off the board. I figured someone would bid $2, thinking I wanted him and that I'd go to $3. Wasnt gonna happen though. He was your for $2. Wait, no one bid $2. dammit. Guess hes mine for $1 then.

D's: Indy D at $4. Bargain. One of the top 5 or 6 in the league. With a week 6 bye, I really liked the matchups for WASH D or SD D that week. Neither of which do i have in the top 20 D's, yet both got bid-up on me. Oh well. Took the AZ D cause I knew I'd get them for $1, and after the target 2, the rest really didnt much matter as long as I didnt get stuck with a cple D's I see giving up HUGE points that week. Took AZ not somuch to score pts week 6, as to avoid negative pts in week 6.

I like my squad. Should Reuben or KJ go down I could be in trouble. I have insane depth at WR though with 4 top 12 WRs that will be starting. I also have Mason who should eclipse 1,000 yards with 6 Tds. My sleeper Gabriel should be the Raiders #1 WR for a few weeks when Porter is benched/traded and Moss gets hurt again.

Really gotta hope my RBs pan out. QB, WR, TE, D I couldn't be happier. That said, both RBs I have I like - but there are a few question marks.

*********************************************

SITS...2 open slots and your bid on Bell makes 3 open bids.

WIGGS bid of $6 is still leading on Bell.

SITS has open bids of $1 ea on Hilliard and Clayton. SITS is penalized $5 against his salary cap. Now has $8 remaining for 2 players, with 2 open bids.

The problem, Sarge, is that I never count a new player.

See this thread for discussion on this very topic (Specifically the opening post, posts 4 and 8.)

And, I guess this is about the fourth thing, there's a double penalty. NO only do I have to roster a player I don't want, the fact of rostering him makes a bid I DO want invalid. And then, as if that's not enough, there is a further fine.

Can you understand that this doesn't make a lot of sense to me?

My post 18 (letting you know your bids/roster was full and no room to bid on another player was available to you atm):

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

SITS wins V MOrency for $1

$13 remaining for 2 players and 1 open bid.

SITS...name 1 to the board!!!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

My post 20, blocking FRICK from naming one to the board, since he had no room to bid:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

FRICK wins R Brown for $2

$13 remaining for 3 players, with 3 open bids.

BEEZER, 8 open slots, 2 open bids...name 1 to the board for FRICK please.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

From this thread "Auction league looking for 3-5 managers", Post 1;

-you cannot bid any more for a player than the amount of money you have left minus 1 dollar for each open roster spot you have left? (only to drive up a price)

-you cannot name a player for bid that you do not have a roster spot open for?

Also:

What happens if your bids conflict?
(example. 1 open WR spot left, a 4 hour old 2 dollar bid for Mark Clayton and a more deirable reciever is named for bidding)

and my post in response:

Your assumption re disallowed bids is entirely correct. Since it is possible (and did happen to one manager last year) that you will win the bid for a player you didnt really want, you must have the salary cap available as well as the open roster slot available.

To answer your hypothetical....if you have a bid on a player for which you have only 1 remaining roster slot, you cannot bid on another player until someone else outbids your current offering. If a manager submitted a bid anyway, that 2nd bid would be deleted.

Last year, largely to keep bids honest, we penalized managers $5 from their available salary cap for each illegal bid they submitted. One particular individual, I believe suffered a total of $20 lost salary cap to this. (Which obviously put them at a severe disadvantage competitively.) The reason for doing this is fairly straightforward. When a manager places a bid, it changes (or at least has the potential of changing) the "landscape" so to speak vis-a-vis player values relative to other players of the same position. Since each bid has the possibility of altering the planning/execution of the draft, it is imperative that bids which cannot be won, not be submitted. The only way to "motivate" people to not do something they shouldnt be doing, is to invoke some form of penalty. A meaningless penalty, has meaningless affect. A salary cap hit, in a roto style draft, is far from meaningless. By the same token, a managers bench must remain filled throughout the season or their roster will be declared ineligible for the weeks/games they were short. Why? If I dont have 2 guys drawing salary and sitting on my bench, I have more money available for my starters. Since every other manager (presumably) is abiding by the roster requirements, it would give me an unfair advantage to maintain a smaller roster. Besides, every NFL team out there, maintains a team roster of equal sizre to one another. They may differ in composition (how many backup QBs etc) but in total body count, they are the same size.

This is not something "new". We did this last year. (Just ask THK, his errors cost himself $20 in fines last year.)

Re: 146

Of course, what you're saying is up there. What I'm saying is that it makes no sense to keep penalizing me when I have no intention of doing anything wrong.
I mean, everyone pays the price if I decide I can't be competitive.
And how does that help you, me, the league or anyone else?

And before we revert to "well, this is the rule," think about how many times, on the politics board, we talk about how f**ked and short sighted that is.

I understand that it cost THK last year. That has nothing whatever to do with whether or not the system works or is appropriate.

Besides the rule, do you or does anyone else think there's a reason to keep throwing penalities at me without warning?

If so, what it the reason. And remember, we don't want to start with "well, that's the rule."

I wasn't thinking that adding a player to the pool constituted a bid. And what I was thinking ought to count for something.

I do believe, that ample opportunity was presented to question or provide input re the processes/procedures/penalties etc. I dont recall, nor do I find, any incident of your questioning this procedure before now.

This is only our second year of doing this and I expect it may take alittle time to get every aspect completely ironed out. At this point, I'd suggest your making a mental note of it and bringing it up for further discussion prior to executing the auction next year.

I won't remember to be pissed next year.
And at my age, mental notes aren't my forte in any event

Just a thought for next year when we bid.

Let's say, that I have three empty slots.
I have bids on two players.
I win one of the players, leaving me with one player with a bid, a slot to fill, and I am now up to name a new player.

My proposal would be that I can pass the naming of the new player to the person with the most empty slots.

This would then allow me to bid on somebody already open for bid.

Just a thought to throw around while it is fresh in our minds for next year.

works for me. Allowing a manager to "pass" on naming to the board if they so choose. Of course, it could well "pass" all the way back around to you, and in that case, I'd say its yours to do.

SITS...there are clearly strategies to follow in the draft. Early on, you're perfectlky fine to name a top 20 RB you dont want. SOMEONE will take him. Late in the draft, it behooves you to only name people you wont mind winning. Too few slots to fill amongst to few competing bidders.

Lets get through this like the grown men we are.

My baseball auction allows 3 passes. They can come in handy when it comes down to the end. Thats for 24 slots. Maybe we could use 2 or 3 in this league (next year) Then if it passes all the way back to you you can use another pass or you have name a player for bid

That said, I'll be fine once the draft is over.

Well, at least this year I have those leftover funds to replace injuries.
That is what cost me last year.
I make one and only one bump bid on Cedric Benson and get stuck with him.

Guess who didn't make that mistake this year.

Tough crowd.

I'll explain my strategy this weekend after the last couple fill their rosters.

Assuming Jackhammers bid on GB D stands at $1 and I didnt overlook a competing bid, I show the following as a "status":

JH...3 open roster slots, 3 to name to the board w/o counting replacement of the GB D. (Board owed 1)

JTSERB...1 open roster slot, 1 open bid. (No ability to nominate to the board, Board owed 2)

WIGGS...2 open roster slots, 1 open bid. (Able to name 1 if bid wins, board still owed 2)

Beezer...5 open roster slots, 2 open bids. (Can name 2 to replace those open bids plus 1 of the 2 the board is lite. Board owed 1)

Youngroman...3 open slots, no open bids, owes the board 2 plus the other one the board is lite. Name 3. Board is "right".)

Butthead...1 open roster slot, 1 open bid. No room to nominate, Board is owed 1.

Wolfer...1 open slot, 1 open bid.

Means that once the board is "right", we should be done. :)

Quite the lineup on the board now, for under $20

QB: McNair
RB: M Anderson/TJ Duckett/C Brown
WR: K McCardell/N Burleson/K Robinson/E Kennison

$11. I spent almost 5 x that for Barber alone.
