0 Subject: New Keeper League

Posted by: barilko6 - [16529229] Thu, Aug 03, 2006, 10:51

Hey all...

I have played in keeper football leagues, but have always wondered how things would work out if I started with a brand new keeper league team.

So here it is, anyone interested in joining a brand new keeper league, not taking over someone else's old garbage (lol), post here and lets get this started!

Thinking of going with standard yahoo scoring, unless someone offers further suggestion.

Roster:

QB
QB
WR
WR
WR
RB
RB
TE
W/R/T Flex
K
DEF
8 Bench slots

Playoffs: Weeks 15/16, nothing for week 17.

Keep 5 players, no more than 2 at any position.

Snake draft for first year, regular draft starting with worst team for following years.

Prefer regular board posters. Thinking 12 teams.

I might be in. Interested, absolutely. Time for a 3rd league is the question. For now, keep me in mind as a "12th" if you need to fill out the league. I'll get back to you in a few days (as I see better what my time constraints are) and try to be more definite for you.

Do you think we have time to get this started and ready before the start of the season?

I hope so...

I have received a couple of emails from interested managers, so we shall see where that puts us.

What do you think is the ideal draft start time?

12 team 2 QB leagues are tough, but very enjoyable since it prevents from being 98% RB for the first 3 rounds.

The RIFC leagues are starting drafting until 8/15 and they are 14 team 24 round drafts so I think we can get it started, but we need to get started quicky if you want to do a slow draft. I would prefer a slow draft, mainly due to wanting to consider who I would draft.

The first pick would be interesting, not only are the consensus top 3 picks this year fairly young, I think Alexander is the oldest at 28, but where do you put players like Reggie Bush and Vince Young, if it is a 2 QB league.

Another point about 2 team leagues is that there are a couple of weeks that have 6 teams with a bye, so only 26 active teams, with 24 starting QBs, you are scraping the bottom of the barrel. One of the weeks has P. Manning and Brady on a bye at the same time.

I might be interested.
Will be driven by whether or not I am dropping a Keeper league.
Should have my mind made up in a day or two.

Do the draft with OTC and you can shift the time if you need to.
Also, the queue system Fred set up works great.

Seconded on OTC (On The Clock by Kafenatid.net).

Absolutely wonderful and can make a slow draft move along with amazing pace, especially if you use the queue feature.

We used Kafenatid for our hockey draft last year. It was amazing. Would highly recommend using it again. I can set that up once we have things rolling.

As Frick said, I think starting a completely new keeper league will be very interesting, where do you draft Bush? How about the QB's, since you need to start 2. (Do we want to drop it to 1?)

Might also be a possibility to drop the teams to 10?

So far we have:

1. Barilko
2. Frick
3. GolfFreak
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.
11.
12.

Maybes: Goatlocker and Sarge.

With this beginning cast of managers, I see only regular posters that would ensure a quick draft. Still, the sooner we get things rolling, the better.

Anyone have any further input as to positions, roster, keepers, etc.?

Thanks Sarge!

I would vote to keep it 2QB 12 teams, unless we can't find managers and then I would support 2QB 10 teams before dropping it to 1 QB.

When you only have 1 QB, the draft is nothing but RBs at the top. With 2QBs (I would also say make the flex spot WR/TE) and suddenly the draft strategy of RB,RB, something else is not as likely, or probably successful.

The Serious Biz league went to 2 QBs last year and it really shook up the draft, IIRC the top 3 picks were LT, Manning and Culpepper. Needless to say I did my best Sarge impression and was the manager who draft Culpepper. My team actually got better after he was hurt ;) We also had 1 manager not draft a QB at all in the draft. He actually did fairly well in the league thanks to some great trading on his part.

I support any rules that de-emphasize the importance of RBs.

We might also want to think about decreasing the bench size. With only 11 starters a bench of 8 seems really deep.

but with 8 keepers Frick, an 8-man bench gives you the roster spot to gamble on an unsigned rookie or two. I like the depth, as it puts us into players who normally dont see daylight until week 6 or 7 on the waiver wires. lol

I agree Sarge, but the current proposal is only for 5 keepers. That is 1/2 of your starting line-up, we could bump up the keepers, but I would want to shorten the bench in that case.

I like the 2 QB format as well. It will finally mean that more than 1 QB will be drafted in the first round. Maybe.

It might also mean I end up with Doug Flutie on my bench...

Gonna be tough if/when a QB goes down. Starting 2 QBs, means 24 with a 12 team league. 1 backup, makes 36 QB's. I can see wanting 2 backups, so the draft should get nice and deep.

With 18 man rosters, I could see going more keepers than 5. I do like the restriction of no more than 2 in any position.

My only concern with FF keeper leagues is the injury bug. There are so many more, and more serious, injuries in the NFL and it makes the fantasy experience more of a crap shoot. If a fair number of your keepers are injured, that puts a real crimp, not only in season 1, but in seasons to come.
So --- any interest in reducing the number of keepers?

I don't really care either way, as long as week keep any monetary amounts low enought that I don't have to explain it to the wife.

I get into enough trouble just trying to explain why I have to use the computer Sunday morning.

What about site hosting? It would be nice to have live scoring, if we made it $20 that could be $200 for prices, say 1st-$120, 2nd-$60, and 3rd-$20, and leave $10 for OTC and $30 for a pay site.

If we want to leave it free and use Yahoo, that would be fine also.

I am thinking of just setting it all up on Yahoo for now, using their standard scoring with the roster setup listed in post 1.

I will also set it up on Kafenatid to help with mailing out of queues.

I will call on 2 others to help set draft order, unless Kafenatid does that too. One person to set an order of managers, another to set an order of 1-12 and then email both lists to a third party to matchup who drafts in what slot.

If we add JTSERB, then we have our 12 managers, and everyone who signs up agrees to the $20 league fee.

Prize Pool:

1st: 150
2nd: 50
3rd: 30
Kaf.: 10

Make sure your email is somewhere in this link, or you email me to make sure you get your invite. I can probably get around to sending invites by tomorrow already.

Alright...

Just thought of something. Being a Canadian banker, my bank attaches fees to "international" cheques. (It works the same way when I send a cheque south.)

The fee is $10, which when looking at a huge payment for something is not much, but when adding that to a $20 fee, its quite much.

That being said, I am now offering the official new posting for league treasurer.

Qualifications: You must be honest, able to count in intervals of 20 up to 240, and have a valid mailing address.

Just getting around to setting up the league, and a few questions pop up for me.

Here are the available trade deadlines from Yahoo:
November 3, 2006
November 10, 2006
November 17, 2006
November 24, 2006
December 1, 2006

Anyone with a preference?

Also, the playoffs, with 12 teams, what works best? I prefer not to have anything on week 17.
I am thinking the top 4 teams, with weeks 15 and 16 being our playoff weeks.

For trades, I want to push them through fairly quick to allow for roster setup, and it won't be a vote, it will be a "email the commissioner" setup. I think a 2 day waiver time is good.
I am assuming we are all experienced enough managers to know good trades when we see them. Draft picks can be included in trades as well.

Scoring Stats: (Default Yahoo, which I prefer for our first year)
Offensive statistics and point modifiers:

Every 50 passing yards: 1 point
Each passing TD: 6 points
Each interception thrown: -2 points
Every 20 rushing yards: 1 point
Each rushing TD: 6 points
Every 20 receiving yards: 1 point
Each receiving TD: 6 points
Each return TD: 6 points
Each Off Fum Ret TD: 6 points
Each 2-point conversion: 2 points
Each fumble lost: -2 points

Kicking statistics and point modifiers:

Field goal 0-19 yards: 3 points
Field goal 20-29 yards: 3 points
Field goal 30-39 yards: 3 points
Field goal 40-49 yards: 4 points
Field goal 50+ yards: 5 points
Each extra point: 1 point

Defensive statistics and point modifiers:

Each sack: 1 point
Each interception: 2 points
Each fumble recovery: 2 points
Each TD: 6 points
Each safety: 2 points
Each blocked kick: 2 points
Shutout: 10 points
1-6 points allowed: 7 points
7-13 points allowed: 4 points
14-20 points allowed: 1 point
21-27 points allowed: 0 points
28-34 points allowed: -1 points
35+ points allowed: -4 points

Lastly...Any thought on a team name? I was thinking of naming it the "Insert Ex-NFL Player's Name Here" Invitational. But anyone else with a thought, that would be great.

Couple of thoughts.
We are already going with 2 QBs.
So, making passing TDs 6 points, really squeues their value vs all other players.
I would much rather see passing TDs as 4 points and all others as 6.

"Dan Fouts" Invitational

You can either to reply to that one (my work account) or send it to the one above. It is for my excite account, you change excite to gmail, but I can't check that one at work.

I have received everyone's email. Frick I didn't get your work email, but I see your excite posting there.

Any more comments to Goatlocker's suggestion in post 67 regarding QB TD points?

For some reason Hotmail identified Frick's email to me as Junk email but they continue to allow repeated offers of Viagara, Webcam Sex Shows, "Screw Me Please", and emails from Sassy Wives to get through.

Nice work Hotmail.

I would lean towards 6 pts for a passing TD, I never understood the argument of it over valuing QBs, in leagues that use 6 pts for a passing TDs the draft is still extremely RB heavy at the top.

If we go with 2 QBs and 6 pts for a passing TD, how many QBs would go in the first 2 rounds compared to RBs, WRs, or TEs.

Of the 24 total spots I would make a very rough (a basically unimformed) guess of
4-6 QBs
12-14 RBs
5-6 WRs
1-2 TEs

Still fairly RB heavy, but more balanced than most leagues.

Quick question, what about return yards?

unless you can score differently between punt returns and kickoff returns, I'm opposed to return yardage scoring.

I am leaning against including return yards as well, but would be open to hearing more about it if managers are interested.

As for a league name, I am thinking we will go with "honoring" one of our favorite former players with our league name. As an added bonus for the league champion, he gets to name the honored player for the next year. (I call this my Masters Dinner proposal!)

Since I don't anticipate getting the opportunity to name an honored player anytime soon (due to what I will blame on my weak drafting abilities), as League Commissioner, I am taking the liberty of naming our league this year!

So...Welcome all to the...

I do not like return yards either, I lost to many games by guys picking up teams that suck returners and racking up points. I think 2 years ago eddie drummond almost doubled moss, owens, harrison, and every other reciever.

I also like 6 points for a qb td, not many qbs are going to throw for 4 tds a game.

Alright...

Well we will keep things how they are. 6 points for QB TD, and no return points.

I am pretty sure it will still be a very top heavy RB draft, so you can use the extra QB points for your advantage!

I am going to register with Kafenatid and Yahoo right now, so that we can get this draft rolling on Tuesday AM, 8:00 EST.

Any further comments?

I'm assuming you sent it to my work account. I'll sign up Monday, I already have an account at Kafenatid so I'm ready to go on that end.

I don't care either way on return yards, I was just asking because it does effect draft strategy, for a couple of positions.

I never received that email, so I've sent him a note.

We have 9 managers on Yahoo...I think we are only missing Wiggs, Frick, and GolfFreak.

Frick, I sent all the info to your home and work with this last email!

Sarge,
Any On The Clock questions, give me a shout.
Same goes to everybody else.

Looking back, I have now done 11 drafts on OTC and looks like 3 more coming up.

Fred has really done a great job with it and has continued to improve and upgrade.
And for $10, its about the best deal in town.

So long as we can get everyone signed into OTC, Tuesday morning, 8:00 am EST is our official start time!

I repeat all the sentiments mentioned regarding OTC. Last year was my first experience, and it was amazing.

However, given the choice Sarge, I would still opt for Shania.

Haven't heard from GolfFreak at all since his post wayyyy back in post 7. No further posts, no reply to emails, and no registration to either of the sites.

Any thoughts from anyone? Should we move back our start date and wait to see if he pops in? Should we take up Taxman on his offer?
