0 Subject: RIFC AAA#1 Draft Discussion

Posted by: Trip
- Leader [13961611] Wed, Aug 16, 2006, 10:50

People at the endpoints of the draft have only one single time limit to make their consecutive picks. Similarly, the clock will be manually advanced to skip past anyone who already has a pick in arrears, unless other arrangements have been made in advance of that pick.

We will maintain a draft discussion thread here, but it will probably not be used extensively. If you know that you have pending time constraints, please post them in this thread. (e.g., "I'll be away until 6pm ET, so if my pick is due before then, you'll have to wait.") To the extent that you can alert everyone to potential availability issues, you can help others to plan their check-in times accordingly. That's simply good draft etiquette.

I do not have access to kafenatid while at work. I will be scheduled for surgery within the next two weeks and my access will be very limited for a week after. StlCards has agreed to serve as a co-commissioner to pick up the slack.

If you know you will be away when your next pick is likely to be due, you can can set up a queue in kafenatid and designate one of more managers to pick on your behalf. Your queue will not be visible until it is your turn to pick. By default, I am able to submit picks for anyone, but you should designate myself and StlCards so that we receive the email alert when it is your turn.

I ask that each of you pick up your player as soon as you draft him. I will also attempt to make pickups for teams using a designated picker, so that we can maintain as complete a list of free agents as possible.

When drafting, there is no need to draft every position. For example, if you want to skip a kicker, be my guest. However, the Fanball software will force you to fill each of the 14 active slots when you set your lineup for each game. You will not have the ability to leave an active slot blank, so plan your bench needs accordingly.

Rationales will be expected for each pick, but deleayed by two rounds. When we near the end of round two, I will set up a thread for those.

A final caveat: Please refrain from mentioning undrafted players, either in this thread, or in your posted rationale.

For those without access to kafenatid, here is a link to the draft grid.

Good luck.

fugazi was about to time out so I stopped the draft since this is round 1.

I have sent trip an email and will leave the draft stopped until I hear from him. We will need to figure out what to do from here.

fugazi, if you read this soon, then please post who you want so we can continue on.

it appears as if the draft was manually stopped, in order to give Fugazi extra time to pick.

Re: Post 8, I did manually stop the draft based on what happened 2 years ago in rifc when goatlocker was missing in action at the start of the draft. Guru stopped the draft to figure out what to do.

However, I reviewed that history and I saw that the draft wasn't halted until goatlocker had already missed 2 turns. Therefore, I started the clock back up.

Fugazi will simply have to make his pick whenever he gets online, or we will have to figure out what to do if he fails to show.

We have a draft clock for a reason, Fugazi missed his chance. If someone posts that they may have problems and we know that they are making an effort to draft timely (i.e. sent a queue, but wasn't received; sent a queue, but their designated picker is away) I will make exceptions. If someone misses 2 picks in a row, we may need to pause to investigate. Simply not checking in is not an reason to pause the draft.

Sorry Fugazi, didn't mean to single you out, but I figured it was best to get my policy out there.

Sent the following message to KKB. I think this qualifies under my exceptions to implement a draft pause if KKB can't open his queue or Taxman doesn't make it back in time.

Fred,

I saw that guru has sent you an e-mail regarding this as well. As someone who is following the draft, but doesn't have access to kafenatid at work, I would like for any designated picker to be able to use the free form method of drafting for me.

A side note, can you make taxman's queue available.

Thanks,

I am betting Taxman set up a queue but did not allow Stl as a designated picker, I think we need to give him the benefit of the doubt and pause the draft until this can be resolved. He would be losing two picks if we didn't.

Another problem, I don't have access to Kafenatid right now.

Can someone shoot me an e-mail and I'll give you my login info so that they can pause the draft. I won't be home for another couple of hours.

I am dazed and confused. My que is empty, but I (thought) I loaded my 6 player queue in just after Reggie Bush was taken off the board. Maybe I didn't. I had a conference p/c going on my land line and on my cell simultaneously starting @ 10 CST and I really can't remember much. So that would be adding to old, fat, deaf and blind..diminished capacity.

You are receiving this e-mail because you are a Designated Picker for Toral and it is their turn to pick in the RIFC AAA #1 League Draft!

Toral 3.11 Queue Unavailable/Empty

Not sure what is going on. Why would I get a designated picker notice when the queue is empty anyway.

Does the software send a designated picker notice every single round and then the person either has the queue enabled or not?

Sounds like a nice improvement could be made to the software.

If the quesu is 'unavailable' then don't send the dp notice. Makes no sense to send it in that case, since the team isn't looking for someone to make their pick anyway during that round.

The draft is moving along nicely;I just wanted to thank everyone for being so attentive. This should be a great league.

I had hoped draft would get to me before now. I have to go work for a few hours. I can't leave a queue because I have the turnaround picks. Leaving a queue could/would leave me with two picks at the same position...something not affordable at this stage of the draft.

I will be back in @ 4-5 hours (before 8 EST).

There are some great new additions being implemented in the On The Clock software. They can be found under the Discussion at the kafenatid site on our draft page and under the 'discussion' link. Here they are though anyway:

The following set of changes will take effect tomorrow, Sunday, August 20. The exact time the changes will take effect is not known because it will be done when I can maxmize my time to catch any bugs/errors that may have been missed in testing.

You will know the changes have taken effect when the version number at the bottom of each On the Clock section reads "Version: 1.04.008 (2006-08-20)."

Changes...

"Keeper Entry" will now be available along side "Start Draft" for league admin's whose leagues have been designated as Keeper Leagues. Keeper Entry will "start" the draft for the admin only and allow the admin to enter keepers for every manager in the draft. The time limit and email notifications will be turned off while Keeper Entry is in effect. After Keeper Entry is complete, the admin can click Start Draft to start the draft as normal and the draft will pick up at the end of the Keeper Entry with any time limits and email notifications in place.

"Make Only the First Player Available" will be an option available for managers who have their queue set to Available. This option will allow managers to only have the first player in their queue show up to their designated pickers and the league admin. This can be used to prevent others from seeing who you're looking at for future rounds or any other purpose you may have to hide the rest of your queue. This option is not available/in effect when your queue is set to Unavailable. NOTE: The default setting is to have All Players show up to keep the system functioning as it is currently.

"Make Free-Form Entry Available" will be an option available for managers who have their queue set to Available. This option will display the "Use Search" link to a manager's designated pickers if the manager's queue contains players. If the manager's queue is empty, this option will display the free-form entry field (search field) automatically to a manager's designated pickers. NOTE: The default setting is to have Free-Form Entry Unavailable to keep the system functioning as it is currently.

E-mails will not be sent to designated pickers if the next manager on the clock has their queue set to Unavailable or has their queue available, but no players in the queue and Free-Form Entry set to Unavailable. This prevents designated pickers from getting an e-mail when there is no possible action for them to take when they visit their league's draft home.

Wish we could get folks to tell us when they will be away from the computer AND for how long when draft is about to reach them.

It would certainly help the rest of us manage our time more effectively as well providing a soothing tonic to the frustration of checking the computer every 10 minutes over a 2-5 hour time frame.

6.05 Jonathan Vilma,LB,NYJ

I knew i wanted to start drafting top defensive guys at this time and vilma is definitely that. but i was very torn between him and Zach Thomas. i had Zach last year and he was quite the beast. i guess it was Zachs injury towards the end of last season that made me decide to go with a younger Vilma. i hope i dont end up regretting this decision.

6.06 Deuce McAllister, RB, NO

This could turn out to be a wasted pick, but I am not sold on Reggie Bush as the primary ballcarrier for the Saints. I think Deuce still has some productivity left, and the Saints might try to showcase him to prospective buyers. If he were my RB2, I'd be concerned, but I thought he was a good gamble at this point in the draft for a RB3.

4.1, Frank Gore, RB, SF, I was in between here. I was going to go for a WR, but seen none that stood out with this pick. I took the safe route and went with Gore who could have a huge year if the Niners don¡¦t get blown out every game. Barlow is gone now so that makes this an even better pick for me. I feel I have a solid core of RB¡¦s now with Westbrook, Parker, and Gore. Everyone says it¡¦s the most important position... I guess we will see.

5.14, Brian Urlacher, LB, CHI Wanted to go WR here, but didn¡¦t see any to my for this pick as I think I can get them later in the draft. So I decided to go with my first IDP here and choose Urlacher. I had Urlacher, Vilma, and Bullock all rated the same, but I took Urlacher because Im a homer ƒº. And he was also Defensive Player of the Year last year

6.01 Todd Heap, TE, BAL, Figured I would shore up the TE position here with Heap. He is healthy and primed for a great year this year. If he stays healthy I see no reason why he shouldn¡¦t.

6.07 Keith Bulluck, LB, Ten

I really didn't have any intention before this draft of picking IDPs this early. Yet now I have picked two in a row (5.08 - McGee). Last year I almost completely ignored IDPs in the draft but was able to find good talent on the waiver wire (don't know if that was more luck or skill) and ended up doing really well on the defensive side of the ball. Yet, I feel it will make a considerable difference this year with the rule of having to start 2 extra IDPs. I tried looking at QBs, WRs, and TEs with this pick, but again saw several players all about the same. I haven't picked a 3rd RB yet, and this will probably come back and bite me, but I just feel that picking a real life backup running back is too much of a crapshoot in that you're just waiting and hoping for the starter to get injured. However, many times this does happen and you strike gold, but I just don't feel making that gamble and went with a sure thing in Bulluck. There are probably only around 25 or so LBs (with about 50 starting each week for all teams) who you can count on for sure to produce for you every week, so I feel it is key to get as many of those as I can without jeopardizing the "main" skill positions. Bulluck is a top LB as he has produced elite LB numbers for several years and am happy to have him.
