Subject: RIFC AAA #1 2006: Draft Rationales #1
Posted by: Trip
- Leader [13961611] Thu, Aug 17, 2006, 09:55
This thread will be for managers in the 2006 RIFC AAA#1 to provide the rationale for each pick.
Here are the ground rules: 1. Only managers in this league should post here. If you want to provide feedback (either from other league managers, or from those not in the league), put it in the discussion thread. (Non-conforming discussion in this thread will be deleted.)
2. Try to keep the pick rationales in the same order as the draft. We'll attempt to keep this thread 2 rounds behind the actual draft. With the lag, most comments should not have an impact on the draft in progress. However, if there are aspects of your pick that you feel need to be kept under wraps, feel free to protect that information. In particular, please avoid mentioning the names of any players who are still undrafted at that time of the post.
If possible, please post your (2 round lagged) comments at the time you make each pick. For example, you should post your comments for your round 1 pick when you make your round 3 selection. If you are not ready to post at that time, then create a "placeholder" so that the next person is able to go ahead in sequence. When your post is ready, simply post it in the draft discussion thread and a moderator can copy it over.
If your rationale is due and intervening placeholders have not been inserted, please insert them before posting your rationale.
3. Once the draft is over, each manager is also encouraged to provide a general draft recap, at which time you can discuss your overall strategy, mention any undisclosed factors, comment on what worked out well and what didn't, etc.
The general format should be: 1.01 Priest Holmes - RB, KC Several sentences of rationale.
As part of your first round rationale, please comment on your selection of draft sequence. |

1.01 Larry Johnson - RB, KC 1st pick should be a no brainer. And having a lack of brains should qualify me, however the two remaining brain cells discussed at length topics such as strength of schedule, retirement of Willie Roaf vs dominating C & guards at KC, new gazillion $ contract for Alexander with his excellent offensive line and Rivers operating behind woefull Charger OL. The Alpha cell finally acquisced to the smarter cell's constant chanting about "150 yrds/game and 17 TD's over last 9 games as featured RB" combined with new KC Head Coach Herm "the worm" Edward's committmit to old Woody Hays theory about "three things can happen when you pass, and two of them are bad". Each scenario played back to Larry Johnson's potential to win a match up on the week he dominates a game, which potentially can be more often than any other NFL player.
We'll revisit this thinking in a few months.

1.02 LTomlinson, RB, SDG
Was a tough decision between Alexander and LT. The QB situation in San Diego scares me a little but I don't think it should affect LT's production too much. Ultimately, I felt LT was more a twin threat(rushing and receiving) than Alexander. One more thing, saying you have LT on your fantasy team is slightly cooler than saying you have Alexander.

1.03 Shaun Alexander, RB, Sea
i chose to pick third for exactly this reason. i feel the top 3 backs in the draft are on a level higher than the next 5 or 6, so my picking third, i don't have to stress the decision, *and* i get a slightly higher pick in the second round than those who picked first or second.
i figured LT would fall to me, but i'm more than happy with Alexander, who i expected to go 1 or 2 in most drafts.

1.04 Tiki Barber, RB,NYG
I chose to pick fourth because I wanted to have basically wanted the first pick of the "other" running backs than the top three. I could of also grabbed one of the three just in case that someone in front of me went in another direction. Having said that, I had three in mind. After what happened this weekend with Clinton Portis, Barber became my pick.

1.05 Steven Jackson, RB, StL
Glad Portis' injury was before my pick. He may be ok, but still, I wouldn't touch him with a ten-foot pole. I don't want to worry about my 1st-rounder.
I had to decide between Jackson, R.Brown, and L.Jordan. basically I found fewer negatives with Jackson, and it doesn't hurt that I'm a Rams fan.
jordan = nice receiving #'s, but low ypc and, he's a raider
brown = I just don't know much about him. I know people are expecting a big year from him, but Jackson is more proven to me.

I chose the 6th position because I believe earlier is better.
1.06 Edgerrin James RB ARI
I just felt Edge was the best player available. Although Arizona is not the offensive powerhouse Indy is I believe Edge may have a chip on his shoulder and should produce well in this offense. However, had Portis not been hurt I may have gone with him.

Draft Choice 9, Draft Pick #7 – I thought about moving down in the draft to #14 so I could take two players in a row and also not have to watch the clock as often. Ultimately I decided that being in the middle had advantages as well and that I could get a pretty decent RB at #7.
1.07 Rudi Johnson, RB, CIN
Looked at several players here, mainly Ronnie Brown and Lamont Jordan. With Rudi I expect 12 TDs and around 1200 to 1300 yds. I also like the Cincy O-Line and the pass should open up the run as well. A lot of players could have gone here and it is just a crap shoot really. I’m counting on Cincy to have a strong offense this year.

Chose the 8th spot for a couple reasons. The top 3 are pretty clear cut, then the next two (which changed a bit after Portis' injury), and then another 3-5 RBs. Instead of deferring to grab a later draft spot to get better value in Round 2, I chose 8th as I did slightly favor a couple RBs over the other 3-5. Also, picking in the middle will better allow me to join runs should one come up.
1.08 Ronnie Brown, RB, MIA
When first picking 8th, I was somewhat targeting SJax. After he went 5th, I switched gears a tad and chose Brown, who I am very pleased to have on my squad. People rave over his durability and talent, and he has as good a chance as any to be the consensus 4th RB next year with his ability and the RB job all to himself with no Ricky. What made me favor him over the other 4 RB in his tier were that I didn't want to take on Portis' injury risk in the first round - especially after having to deal with Priest last year, LaMont's YPC leaves much to be desired, Cadillac slowed some down the stretch last year, and McGahee's supporting cast still stinks.

0.09 - I selected the 9th pick from a choice of #9, 10, 13 or 14. Last year in AA I drafted from the 13th slot, and I felt like I was susceptible to position runs since there were 24 picks after I picked in the even rounds. So I wanted to get closer to the middle this year.
1.09 - Lamont Jordan, RB, OAK
My first 4 picks were made from a queue since I was on vacation. I don't know if I would have taken Portis here or not if I had been present, but I am happy with Jordan. With this pick, I was targeting a second tier RB from Jackson / Brown / Jordan / James / Johnson, and Jordan was the only one left. We'll see how things shake out in Oakland.

0.05 Draft Position #11
After the consensus top 5 backs, there is a tier of 6 backs I felt relatively even about. I selected position #11 with the idea that at worst I would get the last of these backs, and have a good position choosing in the second round. (The first 11 picks turned out to be identical to my list of the top 11 players). Later I rethought this idea and, looking at likely choices in the first 3 rounds, concluded that I might have been better off selecting a higher choice in order to have a higher pick in Round 3, where there may be more of a dropoff than in rounds 1 and 2. Too late.
1.11 Clinton Portis, RB, Was
As it seemed more and more likely that fugazi was going to time out, my plan that this selection would be a no-brainer was disrupted. Now I had to choose between Carnell Williams (eventually went 1.12) and Portis, who was being treated as soiled goods by the top drafters. Portis is both uncertain for week 1, and, according to Rotowire, susceptible to these same sort of shoulder injuries in the future. Two considerations led me to opt for Portis over Cadillac: 1) In offensive co-ordinator Al Saunders' offense, Portis, who already catches 35 passes a year, could become a touchdown monster of the type Saunders has developed; 2) Portis is injured early. What I want to avoid are people who are injured late -- in the playoffs. Cadillac had his own injury problems last year, and I consider Portis to be about as likely to be healthy from mid-season on, and in the playoffs, as Williams.

(The first 11 picks turned out to be identical to my list of the top 11 players.)
Pre-picking of spots, this was my strategy as well. However, Toral grabbed the 11 spot just before I had the chance to. I was really struggling with what I was going to do...The next tier of running backs just did not do it for me for the first round and it was too early (in my opinion) to take a WR. However, I settled on the 12 spot, hoping/praying that someone would take Manning or S Smith before 12. As the draft progressed through picks 1-8, I even began considering trading with someone, giving up my first rounder. Then fugazi timed out, Toral took Portis (who I was going to select if Toral did not beat me to it) and there was one man left from my 6-11 tier, so I selected...
1.12 Carnell "Cadillac" Williams See Toral's reasoning italicized above. In addition, if the Cadillac stays healthy, I'm confident that he can put up big numbers. One only has to remember the start that he had last year to see the talent that he possesses. I hope he stays healthy (crosses fingers).

1.13 - Peyton Manning, QB, IND
When I didn't get one of the top 8 draft slots, I knew I did not want to go RB - RB, and contemplated not going RB at all. I cannot expand on this right now as it pertains to future draft strategy, but it basically comes down to this. I know I am getting the #1 QB available. There will be RBs who have a likelyhood of outperforming my RB options here (Kevin Jones and Rueben Droughns) available in later rounds of the draft.

I chose the last pick because I really didn’t have an option and historically for me I usually fare better when my picks are closer together then being in the middle of the draft.
1.14 - Brian Westbrook, RB, PHI
If Manning didn’t slip to me I knew I was going to go with a 2 RB combo. I am happy with the Westbrook pick here as I had him higher then Cadillac and McGahee. He should should put up solid numbers again in the West Coast Offense.
2.01 - Willie Parker, RB, PIT
Im a little skeptical with this pick here because I think Duce will steal some carries from him, but I wanted to stick with my 2 RB strategy. Pittsburg runs the ball every year more than almost every other team so that bodes well for Parker.

2.02 - Chad Johnson, WR, CIN
I am still stuck in the same quandary as I was in the first round, and I still cannot expand on my complete thinking. My RBs were still available (Jones and Droughns), but I really want a player I can get excited about. Chad Johnson fits that bill nicely. Steve Smith, Torry Holt and TO were all considered here, but I just think that Chad was more likely to be consistent. The added benefit of having CJ on your team is that you never need to go check your team to see what kind of a day he is having. Whatever game you are watching, when he scores, you are going to see the celebration.

2.03 Torry Holt
Torry Holt is the reason that I selected the 12 spot, as on the turn, I knew that I would be selecting early in the second. I was hoping that one of the top 11 RBs slid in the first and then no RBs excited me here, so...I then decided to forego an RB in the second (yes, I know, sacrilegious!) and grabbed the top WR on my board. Anything less than 1300 yds and 11 TDs and I will be disappointed. While there were other Wrs with bigger upside (see TO, Steve Smith), he's as steady as it gets.

2.04 Steve Smith, WR, Car
Torry Holt was actually the guy I wanted here, but letter_j grabbed him up a pick before. Smith was the wide receiver to own last year, and I hope he can repeat the performance which gave him the league lead in catches, yards, and receiving touchdowns. Smith may be targetted less than last year's league-high 45% with the acquisition of Keyshawn Johnson; OTOH Keyshawn may free Smith up, and Jake Delhomme seems to have the pattern of always keying in on one go-to guy. Return ability is a nice bonus.
I don't usually pick wide receivers in round 2, but am taking a calculated risk here that there will be relatively little dropoff between the RB I could have here and one who will be available in round 3.

2.06 Warrick Dunn, RB, ATL
When I created my queue, I first listed the top 16 RBs (who I thought were worthy of a 2nd rd pick), then 3 WRs (Johnson, Smith, Fitzgerald), and then Manning, to get to the 20th overall pick. Obviously my 16 RBs held up, and Dunn was selected. He is one of the few RBs who can put up consistent pts without reaching the end zone, so if his TDs go up, I'll consider it a bonus.

2.07 Terrell Owens, WR, Dal
It's an age old fantasy football quandary whether to go with a lower tier RB in round 2 or a top talent at another position. I could have easily went with one of the Jones RBs or even Reggie Bush (who by the way I see him starting off somewhat slowly but could be huge come playoff time), but I felt the available talent at WR was just too much to pass up and felt I could still grab a decent RB in round 3. Insert TO as my pick. I am real happy to have him and feel if he doesn't miss any games to due to injury or being a jerk, he has a great shot at being the top WR.

2.08 Larry Fitzgerald, WR, AZ When I took the #7 spot as opposed to moving down lower, I basically decided that I would have to take a WR in the second round. There were still some decent options at RB, but most that I could see had issues surrounding them. I had planned to take TO if he was available and wasn’t what I would call thrilled to take Fitzgerald, but he is too highly rated and has the potential so I took him. I just hope he turns out better than my last year’s WR pick that also had ‘potential’.

I would've loved to have gotten a solid #2 RB but all the RB's that were left were questionable to me. I want reliability with my early picks. whatever RB I could have taken here, I may be able to draft someone who equals them in a later rd. no way can I draft someone like Harrison in a later rd.
Harrison is a TD machine and should be good for 1100+ yds again. was hoping Fitzgerald would drop, but I'm happy with Harrison.

Ahh, the man that caused so many headaches for fantasy players last year. I'm not too high on him but he seems he'll get another shot to carry the load. With Martz now on board I look for Detroit to right their offensive ship, hopefully with Jones getting the brunt of the carries. Had 2 receivers in mind when I made this pick and assumed one of them would make it back to me and I'd have an easy 3rd round pick.

2.14 - Randy Moss, WR, Oak
So maybe this is a nostalga pick. Or maybe, this is a WR who can light up the score board given the time to get open. With Aaron Brooks riding Bart to the old Alameda Stadium after dinner at Alioto's (Fisherman's Wharf), a mobile QB who can buy time for Moss, this pick is a gamble that Moss has still has the skills to dominate a game. I worry that the Raiders don't have another receiver currently that can relieve Moss of the double/triple coverage he is sure to draw.
Much like my following round 3 pick, there is some gamble involved with Moss.

Just Great. Left my pre-written rationales at work. Anyway, I thought this pick was going to be tough. I wasn't happy with the RBs I was seeing nor the WRs. It was too early for a QB and I thought very hard about taking Gates here. I still thought it was too early for a TE though. I kept looking and noticed Dom Davis was still available. I know he has injury concerns and plays on a bad team, but the fact that Houston passed on Bush says he will be the starter and certainly worthy of a pick here. I was really squirming as the second round went on, because my need here is for a 2nd running back and my projections had a whole tier of running backs running out just before I made my pick, leaving me a host of RBBC types or other dubious characters. In that case I would have made a real reach and drafted Frank Gore (4.01), one of my sleeper candidates. I got lucky. holt decided to select a second WR, which left one name alive on this RB tier.
At least Lewis hasn't had to do his off-season preparation in prison this year. Neither age nor injuries are responsible for his decline, so I am hoping there's a lot of bounceback capability there. He's in a pseudo-contract year, since he's due for a big bonus next year that the Ravens won't want to pay. I'm satisfied that I got good value here. Lewis went at 3.04 in RIFC and 2.11 in AAA #2.

The Rodney Dangerfield of fantasy football. He posted solid numbers in 2005. In 2006, I believe that **QB Packers** will be gunslinging from behind alot and one would assume that Driver figures to be the beneficiary of this production. Another safe pick (IMHO) at the WR position.

4.02 - Joseph Addai, RB, IND
I finally popped my RB cherry here. This could pay off big, or bite me in the butt. I had targeted him since the beginning of the draft as a high-risk high reward pick. I am tired of finishing in the middle of the pack in this league and have decided that I need to take some risks if I want to rise to the top. This does mean I need to handcuff him to Rhodes, who I hope will be available with my pick in the 5th/6th round.

4.03 Roy Williams, WR, DET
Faced with the same dilema of jumping the gun on the next wave of RBs, I again forego the RB position.
Williams has an ADP of 38, so I consider this to be good value at pick number 45. Couple that with the fact that Williams is uber talented and the number 1 receiver in a Martz offense. Furthermore, Roy has said that he has one standard for the coming season: Torry Holt. Lofty aspirations. In his seven seasons with the St. Louis Rams -- and with Martz on the sideline -- Holt has averaged 88 catches, 1,355 receiving yards and eight touchdowns per year.
I'm happy with the WR spot...now if only I can find some value at RB.

4.04 T. J. Houshmanzedeh, WR, Cin
The two players I was targetting here, Frank Gore and Roy Williams, were picked at 4.01 and 4.03. Second round in a row where letter_j has snatched my player. That left me with a group of 6 wide receivers to choose from, including also Andre Johnson (4.13), Joey Galloway (4.05), Javon Walker (4.06), Derrick Mason (4.14), and Joe Horn (4.07). All of these players have higher upsides than Houshmanzedeh, but I considered him the most reliable pick on the bunch, and opted for reliability in my #2 WR.

The last of my picks from my queue, I think Walker has great upside in Denver. He was a top-tier receiver before he got hurt, so I am hoping that he is this year's version of Steve Smith.

4.07 Joe Horn, WR, NO
Wasn't exactly sure where to go with this pick. Wasn't going to take my 3rd RB this early, the next best QBs seemed to be too bunched together to pick out one of them, and as for TEs, I felt picking a Shockey or Gonzalez was too early for the 4th round. So I looked at WRs. One player that caught my eye was Horn. Horn had a miserable season last year, but that could be attributed to a lingering injury he had. Before last year, Horn was a very consistent WR who put up stats that rivaled the best. Here's hoping he has a season closer to 2004 than 2005. I also considered Andre Johnson, but he was supposed to bust out last year and was a huge disappointment, and am not going to buy into the hype until I see him produce.

It was time for recievers and you guys took them all. Except for little joey galloway. Last season he realy started to become the go to guy in tampa and i hope it stays that way. I know he is capable of putting up big numbers. I also know he is capable of having some stinkorific weeks as well.

4.08 Carson Palmer, QB, Cin
This was not a move I was planning to make this early. I was definitely going to wait until later on both QB and TE. Had my next stud WR picked out that I felt would be a top guy to have and then da bomb took Horn right before me. At that point I felt there was good value at WR that good be had later on, so I shifted directions. I decided that since two QBs were already off the board I might be able to start a run. I feel that Palmer can be equal to Manning who went way earlier, so I felt Palmer now was a good pick anyway.
Since I missed out on Gates earlier I felt that a run on QBs would allow me to take a solid TE with my next pick.

Really happy to get Hasselbeck here; right where I expected to get him.Briefly considered another WR but really wanted Hasselbeck as my QB. Since the closest team to me is Seattle we get a far amount of off-season coverage of the Seahawks and I was very impressed by many of the comments Matt made after the Superbowl loss and in th off-season; this guy is ready to get there again and I predict he will be the No.1 QB in the league this year.

The 2nd tier QB's (QB's who are good but not named Peyton) dropped like dominos (dominos that are set up next to each other and toppled consecutively). I figured I may as well get one while the gettin' was good (Eli).
though my initial plan was to draft a QB later, we were getting into 3rd tier WR's and committee backs so I think I made the right decision. now I just need to pull for Eli to become the full QB nerd that is his brother and lead me to the championship.

4.14 - Derrick Mason, WR, Bal
I had been targeting a WR for both my round 4 and round 5 picks. Mason is a proven commodity in NFL. Not a burner, but a great route runner with great hands. A possession WR with out speed is probably not going to knock any headlights out, but the combination of reuniting with McNair and Eric Moulds moving to Houston makes this a low risk pick. I am looking for 900 yrds and 6 TDs out of Mason.

5.01 - Matt Jones, WR, Jax
Per my 4.14 blurb, this slot was targeted for a WR and Jones, although a reach, has elite, but unproven WR talents. I am attracted to the college QB's 6'6" height and the absence of an established #1 receiver on the Jax roster. Usually takes 3 yrs for receivers to bloom, but that is for guys not learning a new position. I look for 8-9 TD's and 800 yrds.

Man, I really don't like Mcnabb but I needed a reliable QB here. I'm hoping he runs a little more this year but that's doubtful. He was a "safe" pick at QB and one that I regret a little now. Was looking at Shockey here but figured the drop from him to the next 3-4 TE's wasn't that big.

Well, we have to start 2 RB's each week, and I had turned my nose up at the RB leftovers long enough. Jones had 1335 rushing, 143 rec'ving, and 9 td's last year. I hope the Bears remember that. I believe there's a better chance that he'll be the starter than Benson, but obviously I'm taking a chance here. There were 7 more RB's taken before my next pick (Mike Bell), all questionable, and I pretty much wanted all of them.

5.06 Deion Branch WR NE
I had really planned on takinr another RB or a top TE with this pick but a run on wide recievers the past round and a half chaged my mind. I was very happy to get Branch with this pick as I had him rated a bit higher than most for two reasons. 1 he is the undisputed go to guy in NE now; and 2 I think New England's defense will have a substantial drop-off this year and they will find themselves playing from behind a bit more than they have in the past and Branch should benefit from a more aggressive passing game.

This pick might have turned a few heads, but McGee was a guy who I really wanted to have on my team. Might have taken Shockey if he wasn't taken right before me, but after deciding who to pick, one thing jumped out at me. While available QBs and WRs seemed too bunched together to pick one out of them, I went with McGee who is far and away the best at his position. McGee was a full 2 points per game better last year than the next best DB, and no other player available had the same kind of dominance relative to his peers.

At this point in the draft, I went with Gonzo primarily by process of elimination. I didn't like the receivers that were available, and I thought there were a number of similar QBs still available. Running back depth is vital and I was hoping that Brown would make it here, even though he has the same bye week as Jamal Lewis. I was looking for a lot more than a bye-week stand-in here. Brown can rush for a thousand yards and score 8 or more touchdowns but 3 dangers knocked him down from being a #2 back. Obviously I would like his contract extension demands to be worked out, for him to show more durability, and to avoid losing carries to **undrafted players**.

Peyton has been quoted as saying that the number 1 back in Indy is Rhodes. While I made this pick on Saturday, on Sunday night, Madden and Michaels opined that OC Moore does not RBBC. Here's to the job being Rhodes' and not Addai's.

I passed on Mike Bell here, deciding not to corner the market on Denver RBs. Thinking "It's better to burn out, than to fade away", I decided to go the riskier route, and go for the bird in the bush too. I now have 3 running backs without confirmed jobs. I need for two of them to hit for me. If all three do? Watch out league.
I do think Benson will win the job in Chicago, but I watched the Denver game on Saturday night and Mike Bell was impressive, making me regret this pick.

Sorry for the lengthy delay in making this selection. I left the house at approximately 3:30 EST for a stag party. Just after I left the house, the picks came fast and furious, putting me back on the clock. I could not leave a queue 'cause I had no idea what I was going to do.
I almost timed out as I was at a tavern and then the strip bar. Ironically enough, I made this pick at the strip bar. If I would have been sober, I do not think that I would have had the cajones to pick Taylor, although I consider him value at the 73 pick. It's still his job...WHILE he's healthy, JDR will ride him.

This pick is a real testament to my ability to separate my player likes and dislikes from what I have to do for the best interests of my team. There's nobody I like to have on my roster less than Bledsoe. He tormented my Bills with the Patriots for a decade. Then he came over to Buffalo and wasted three years of the team's time by playing just well enough to lose.
I may have stretched by a round here, but with the top QBs gone, Bledsoe is at the top of a group of 3 QBs, and with 6 teams needing QBs I can't take the chance that he won't make it back for the next round. Bledsoe can still throw the deep ball and I expect the arrival of Owens to allow him to move him around 4,000 yards passing while throwing for 25 TDs. He needs to cut his interception rate a bit.

6.07 Keith Bulluck LB TEN
I really didn't have any intention before this draft of picking IDPs this early. Yet now I have picked two in a row (5.08 - McGee). Last year I almost completely ignored IDPs in the draft but was able to find good talent on the waiver wire (don't know if that was more luck or skill) and ended up doing really well on the defensive side of the ball. Yet, I feel it will make a considerable difference this year with the rule of having to start 2 extra IDPs. I tried looking at QBs, WRs, and TEs with this pick, but again saw several players all about the same. I haven't picked a 3rd RB yet, and this will probably come back and bite me, but I just feel that picking a real life backup running back is too much of a crapshoot in that you're just waiting and hoping for the starter to get injured. However, many times this does happen and you strike gold, but I just don't feel making that gamble and went with a sure thing in Bulluck. There are probably only around 25 or so LBs (with about 50 starting each week for all teams) who you can count on for sure to produce for you every week, so I feel it is key to get as many of those as I can without jeopardizing the "main" skill positions. Bulluck is a top LB as he has produced elite LB numbers for several years and am happy to have him.

Ahhh, the Denver RB factory. Shanahan apparently views Tatum Bell as a good change-of-pace back and not much more. All I know about Mike is that he is Denver's starter right now and he was 10-73 with 2 td's the other night. That's good enough for me. If he retains the job, and it seems that he will, he'll gain well over 1000 yds and get his share of TD's (Tatum isn't used around the goal line). Now just keep *undrafted tub-o-lard* off the field in goal line situations and these will be the party days!
