7.01 Mike Peterson, LB, JAX

IDP becomes a pressing need after 90 picks and finding Peterson available at the end of six rounds exceeded my draft hopes. I had Peterson rated in my pre-draft rankings at 81. The undersised Jacksonville MLB should deliver a steady 10 points per game and has a much higher upside. I project a 120 tackles, 4 sacks and 2 each fumble/interception placing Peterson as a top 10 IDP.

Since we need three running backs and Barlow was traded during the day, I thought that this would be a great time to pull the trigger. If he can produce with the Jets, this would be a great pick up.

7.05 Da Bears

Bill Swerski: Alright, we're talking here, live from Ditka's, in the heart of Chicago, Illinois. The city of big shoulders, and home, of course, to a certain football team, which has carved out a special place in the pantheon of professional football greats. That team, which is known the world over, as.. Da Bears!

Superfans: Da Bears!!

Bill Swerski: Okay. Okay, by my watch, we're about thirteen minutes from game time. As you are sure aware, Da Bears are getting ready for the big play-off against Da New York Giants. Now, let go around the room for some predictions. Pat?

Pat Arnold: Da Bears, 62 to 3.

Bill Swerski: Okay. Todd.

Todd O'Conner: Bears. 79-zip.

Bill Swerski: Oh, really? You don't think that Da Giants will score?

Todd O'Conner: No, I do not! Da Bears defense is like a wall. You can't go through it!

Bill Swerski: Alright. How about you, Carl?

Carl Wollarski: I say Bears, 52 to 14.

Pat Arnold: Oh, what? Come on!

Carl Wollarski: I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I gotta give Da Giants credit - I think they'll give Da Bears a game!

Bill Swerski: Alright, leave him alone, that's his prerogative! As for my prediction.. at game's end, uh.. there will be two teams of contrasting moods heading off da field, my friends. One gloom, one gleeful. The gleeful, of which be.. Da Bears!

Superfans: Da Bears!!

Under-utilized in the Vikings offense Burleson should blossom in Seattle. As I mentioned in my rationale for Hasselbeck I expect there to be plenty of passes to go around in Seattle, and I expect Burleson to achieve the success many thought he would have last year.

7.07 Carolina Panthers, DEF, CAR

When to take a DST is always a question mark. I know the philosophy is to wait and I do agree with that. Still there comes a point when you have to take the position that seems it will give you the biggest advantage. The Panthers are very highly rated and I'm no good at picking IDPs so I went with the safer route of the Panthers. May not have a huge advantage over some teams, but it should help during certain weeks going against teams with the weaker DSTs.

If he's healthy, there's no LB that's better. All reports say he is healthy and the last time he came back from an injury plagued season he put up fantastic numbers. Well, here's hoping he stays on the field.

7.09 Zach Thomas, LB, MIA

I knew I wanted to focus on getting some top IDPs, but I didn't want to take them too early. So I waited for others to start the run and managed to get a top-tier LB. I think Thomas's consistent tackle totals make him worthy of a 7th round selection in a league with 6 IDP starters. I don't think he is much worse than Vilma, who went 18 picks earlier. I thought about taking Vick here, but decided to hold off until Rd 8, and he never made it back.

Smith stuck out like a sore thumb for value here and I'm happy to have him as my WR3. I think that he'll see plenty of balls even with Javon Walker around and that at 36 he's still good for 1000 yards and 6 touchdowns.

7.12 Laurence Maroney, RB, NWE

In round 7, I'm still trying to catch up from going WR in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Maroney has been a beast in the pre-season against first-team defenses and we all are aware of C Dillon's injury problems last year (couple that with the fact that Dillon is 32!).

I was really wrestling with picking up an **undrafted (at that time) QB**. Trip later advised that Maroney would not have slid past him. Thus, in retrospect, I made the right decision about when to take Maroney; that's not to say that I made the right decision in selecting Maroney.

8.03 Michael Vick, QB, ATL

I felt that the time had come to grab a/any QB (although I felt that I could still wait). At the 101 pick, he was the highest rated left QB on my board (12 taken all ready) and I believe that "the Michael Vick experience" is great value in this spot (ADP = 83). Some very experienced, well-respected fantasy players have this guy rated as high as #2 in leagues such as our own that reward rushing TDs and rushing yds. While I'm not not as "bullish" as some others, I think that week in, week out, Vick can put up consistent numbers.

8.04 London Fletcher, LB, Buf

Selecting Fletcher (who has changed his name to Fletcher-Baker), I move into the IDP portion of the programme. He should put up about 100 solo tackles and throw in 3 or 4 sacks. He's not losing anything, as shown by his second half last year where he put up 72 solo tackles in 10 games plus 3 sacks and an interception. I feel happy with him as my LB. Nick Barnett (who I got at 9.11), Antonio Pierce (9.08) and Lofa Tatupu (8.06) were my next 3 choices.

I admittedly don't know much about the IDPs other than their raw stats. But since we are starting six IDPs this year, I decided to acquire some of the top LBs after getting the primary offensive positions squared away. Tatupu put up good numbers last year, and since he is young, I am hoping that he might even improve them this year. I also considered Terry Glenn (9.01) here.

I didn't really want to draft Witten. With the addition of Owens, I see his numbers dropping from last year. I kept waiting for someone else to draft him so I could take a TE with more upside like LJ Smith or Heath Miller, but when it came to be my turn to draft, four other teams needed a TE and I didn't want to risk having none of those TEs left for my next pick, so I went with what I feel was the safest choice left in Witten.

I drafted Smith as my TE in this league last year and was disappointed in his injury riddled season last year;but the reasons for drafting him still remain.None of Philly's wide recievers are IMO very good and Smith if he can remain healthy could and probabley should be used much as Westbrook has in the past and could end up the teams leading reciever.

My 3rd homer pick in a row (4th total - I rushed Peyton while at UT, even got a call from his older brother...he was even dorkier then). I got to see plenty of DeAngelo while he was playing in my hometown, Memphis. He has tremendous talent and carried the team while he was here. This could be a good or a bad thing, he was used as much as an NFL running back while playing here, but he was also abused like an NFL RB. I was surprised he fell to me here.

I was panicking as the pix moved down round 9, because with the recent rumours about Bledsoe being supplanted by his backup, I really needed a second quarterback and had to hope that da Bomb, smith32 and fugazi would continue to play their game of chicken and go without selecting a quarterback. I was very relieved that they did. I like Warner's chances this year; I see the addition of Edge as opening up the passing game and allowing him to be more efficient than ever. The big concern with Warner is his durability. As long as he's healthy I can play matchups using him and Bledsoe -- if Bledsoe is still starting. As I mentioned in my Bledsoe rationale, I can't stand the guy and it would be a fitting end to our relationship if he were to wreck his fantasy year by losing his job. Ben Roethlisberger was also considered here.

With everyone participating in the LB gathering, I decided to get what I thought was one of the last guys in a second tier of LBs. So now I have 3 LBs in my first 10 picks. Finally, a starting QB. I figured it was about time to pick one, especially after several teams already picked their backups. It wasn't that I was avoiding QBs on purpose, it was just that I never saw an opportunity where one stood out. Last year, Brooks averaged the 14th most points per game among QBs, and if IIRC, he stunk - but I guess only in real life. So to score more points per game than guys like Roethlisberger, Bledsoe, or even Delhomme, must mean his running game adds a lot to his value. He really can't do any worse than he did last year, can he?

I planned to grab a DB and an RB. I'm looking for one of the backups to my main RBs. With Jamal Lewis's hip flexor endangering his status for week 1, Mike Anderson is my #1 target. I think that Anderson will make it back to me coming back around the turn, and if not I'll pick Lendale White (who is still around although he went at 7.01 in RIFC). Lewis has been increasing his tackles every year and should continue to improve. In RIFC last year's AAA champ, culdeus, declared that he had Lewis as his #3 DB, so I'll hope that the champ's scouting is fruitful.

(Note: the next 2 picks were Mike Anderson and LenDale White. Aargh)
