RIFC AA Managers - You are each invited (although not required) to post your general reflections on the completed draft. Comments may be as detailed or as general as you wish. As a catalyst, free free to comment on any of the following:

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Non-managers are also welcome to post general comments on the draft, and to raise questions.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

Well I had never played a H2H that had IDPs before. I always spend so much time commishin gmy own league that I never made time for anything else. Last year though while serving as a DP for a RIFC member, I saw it had IDPs and I got interested. When I was looking through the rules before the draft, I noticed that there were a lot of points offered to IDPs and I started researching them heavily and I noticed that I had to figure something out to get the best ones a little earlier than normal.

Didn't have a huge overall strategy as I usually go with the flow of the draft and try to pick my spots and not reach. Planned to go RB-RB and then grab a top notch WR. When it got to me, the top WRs were already gone IMM, so I nabbed Gates. Maybe a little early, but knew he wouldn't get back to me and the difference in him over the other TEs compared to the WRs were great. Then I might have mistepped when I grabbed Eli a little early. But my gut tells me that he will do even better than some of these projections. I think this is the year that most top notch QBs take over. Their INTs go down and yds go up--plus he has Plax, tiki, shock and Toomer as his primary targets. Add that to the help his big bro gives him and I think he could do well. Didn't intend on taking a DEF so late, ut it worked out. Besides 2 or 3 times where my guy got taken in front of me, I pretty much executed my strategy perfectly as loosely as I had it to begin with.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

I typically draft ok, but never well. I love leagues where you can manage your team and overcome a bad draft. I hate leagues where there is no flexibility that allows you to make up for injuries and bad drafts. This leagues appears to allow for that--however, for once I am very excited about my draft. I picked Ronnie Brown higher than projections because I like everything about his situation this year--better QB, better O-Line, good D for field position and no Ricky to split time with. Add that to having a year under his belt, and I like that pick a lot. I also like TJ in the 5th a lot. I htink he is still underrated. I like zach thomas in the 8th who I had rated #1 on my board and to then get two other LBs who were all in my top tier was exciting. Had 12.08 Gibril Wilson as Tied for 1st on my board. Love Wali Lundy at 15.07. Then for depth getting Edwards and Lloyd at 16 and 17 and then to then nab Henry a starting RB in the 18th were all huge for me.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

I like bjclinton's team--treasonists I think. He has a lot of weapons and depth. mjd also could cause some problems for the top teams. I've learned never to count out Peter N.s team but that Dom Davis pick could really hurt him.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

The lack of prepardness and qs. This is supposed to be a highly structered and organized league and it was far from that. The lack of qs and to this day amount of missed picks even after the draft concluded is mind-boggling to me. So it shouldn't surprise me when several players I had in my q lasted for 3 rounds at times. There were some great picks though and some shocked me that they were picked as I didn't think many would know about them and they were not hyped by most sites.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

No, I love my draft. My DEF are perhaps a little shaky, but we can find one in the WW or trade if need be to rectify that situation. Each time I was ready to take a DEF, it went right before me so I just kept pushing it back as most of hte Ds are very close to each other in the end.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
After finding out I had the first pick, my plan was to
- Pick one of the top 3 RB with pick 1.01.
I had Tomlinson, Johnson, and Alexander rated about even, and would have been much happier if I had the #3 selection and didn't have to make this choice.
- Pick a top WR and a 2nd RB with picks 2.14 and 3.01.
I was able to do this. I chose Holt over Moss because I was afraid of the downside of Moss. I chose Lewis over Dillon because I thought he had more potential for a big season.
- Pick a top QB with pick 4.14.
I chose Palmer because I believe he has the potential to be the top scoring QB in the league. Even better than Manning. The big concern is coming back from his injury. I picked him before his Monday night game against GB, and was happy to see him do well. After I picked him, I planned to pick up his backup with my last pick as insurance. I think Wright will be in the top half of quarterbacks if he is forced to play. I am still concerned about his injury. If Palmer wasn't there, I would have picked Bulger or McNabb at this spot.
After these picks, I had no plans for targetting positions to individual picks. For my overall roster I wanted.
3 QBs - 2 starters + Wright
5 RBs including backup for Tomlinson.
5 WRs
1 TE
1 K
1 DEF
1 TE, K, or DEF to be rotated by bye week.
3 LBs
2 DEs
2 DBs
I ended up with one less WR and an extra LB because Peterson was injured after I drafted him. I have never played in a league with IDPs before, and was unsure how valuable they were. My feeling is that top LBs will be the most valuable.

My plan was to start drafting IDPs with my first pick after the first IDP was picked. That ended up being round 8.

I wanted to pick a top 10 defense and didn't think it was worth picking one early.

I planned on picking a kicker with pick 23.01.

I picked Vernon Davis as a 2nd TE with pick 18.14. This was unplanned. I was surprised he was available that late in the draft, and I think he has potential to be a star this season.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?
My favorite pick was Carson Palmer. I think he may end up being the top QB in the league. There is nothing I would do over right now. I'm sure that by the end of the season there will be many things I wish I did differently. That is why I believe free agent pickups are very important.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
Boikin's, Ref's, and bjclinton's teams look good to me.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
The problems we had with people getting angry and dropping out. I thought we were lucky to find replacement managers so quickly.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?
No.

1. WHAT WAS YOUR PLAN/STRATEGY ENTERING THE DRAFT?
WERE YOU ABLE TO EXECUTE AS YOU HAD PLANNED?

NB. This is my first time playing Fantasy anything...

Right from the “get go” on Offense, I wanted to get a few “name”
players who were “good.” I wanted a steady QB in a somewhat
throwing offense (Brady), a speedy RB (Cadillac, Bush), a goalline
guy (Duckett, Buckhalter), sticky fingered reliable WR (R Brown,
McCardell. Stokely), a dependable TE who would get thrown to
(Heap).

I did see a lot of strong WR snitched away before I got to them,
but I think mine (R Brown, McCardell, Stokley, Reed, Marshall)
will be OK -- especially the first three. Hopefully the addition of
Stallworth will open spaces for R Brown and his stats will actually
be better due to less tough coverage on him.

As a die hard Eagles fan, I also tried to pick strong Eagles to fill
out my roster (R Brown, Buckhalter, T DEF, Akers, Kearse,
Dawkins, and S Brown); that said, some got snitched away from
me (Westbrook, Trotter, Moats). Since I watch all the Eagles
games, I wanted to be able to see their “points” live and cheer
for them. Probably not a good “strategy” but that’s OK. I hope
they do well this season.

My second favorite team is the Steelers, so I chose Porter and
was thrilled to see him as the “most feared” as per SI. (I hope he
is not jinxed.) He was my first LB and I was surprised that he
lasted until round 15. I wanted a few more Steelers (Parker, H
Ward, V Hayes, Polamalu), but so did others...so he is my only
one.

I did a lot of research and found guys I had never heard of.
Crowder from Miami is an “up and coming” according to SI this
week.

Brady was a tough choice as my brother is a PATS fan and we
constantly debate the relative merits of our home team QB’s. (If
Brady had not been available, I would have chosen McNabb.) I
had to tell him that I chose Brady as my fantasy QB and I think
he is secretly grinning! That’s Okay, since his Red Sox are done
and my Phillies still have a chance...

I took a chance on three rookies (R Bush, M Williams, B Marshall);
I was really surprised no one else took them, although I got Bush
early on. Bush will start for me in one game for week one and
I’ll work the others in later after I see how they are used and how
they do.

I was surprised that most of my IDP players were available for
me. I hope that was a good sign... or maybe not.

I had fun manipulating the bye weeks. Sometimes there were
guys I wanted, but their bye weeks did not match up, especially
since I had so many Eagles (7 total with bye week 9). I made all
kinds of tables to keep track of my picks.

I pretty much did what I hoped to do.

I REFUSED to have any Dallas Cowboys on my team!

Strictly by accident I also have no Giants, and almost no
Redskins, but Duckett was traded just as I picked him, but I
think he will work better as a Redskin for getting me some
points.

2. WHAT WERE YOUR FAVORITE PICKS? WHICH DO YOU WISH
YOU COULD DO OVER?

I don’t really have any favorite picks, except maybe my Eagles. I
won’t start them all, but I will enjoy watching them play on TV.

I don’t have any do overs. I think I have a nice team with some
good flexibility.

I like the idea of IDP points. Manipulating those guys will be
fun. I like the ones I have for IDP.

3. LOOKING OVER ALL OF THE TEAMS, WHICH ONES DO YOU LIKE
THE MOST (OTHER THAN YOUR OWN)?

I like the offenses put together by TD, ref, and Rob Thayer.
Astade will get more points out of Stallworth now that he is an
Eagle go to guy. Muhahos has some serious speed on offense.
Greybear will get some serious passing points from Manning.

I think Twarpy and Astade’s defenses look good, but I like mine
too -- I just don’t know who to play yet...

4. WHAT SURPRISED YOU MOST ABOUT THE DRAFT?

In terms of actual picks, I wasn’t too surprised, especially in the
beginning as the well known players I had on my lists were
peeled off. After that, there were a lot of picks I had never heard
of!

After the first few rounds, I was getting most of the players I
wanted which made me a bit nervous... was I picking strong
enough players?

The draft format was easy to use once I figured it out. Thanks
to everyone who answered my questions -- esp mjd and ref. I
was pleased with the way we bottom dwellers turned the draft
around. I was leary about using the Q and trusting my DP’s, but
was able to be near by computer most of the time, so I could
adjust the Q as people chose ahead of me. Some people got a
bit angry, but that was probably frustration...

I liked my draft position both going down (#10) and then up (#5)
again.

The frustrating thing was waiting for people to time out. I think
3 hours is plenty for the first 5 or 6 rounds, so people have time
to get to a computer to make picks. If they know they are not
going to be around, they really must leave Q’s. After that, 2
hours should be the max and it will teach people to use a Q.
People need to have their choices/lists ready to go ahead of
time!

I am glad we have all our original managers -- the ones who
actually picked. It seems fairer that way.

5. IF YOU COULD START OVER, WOULD YOU DO ANYTHING
DIFFERENTLY?

Nothing, really. I really like my players. The problem is going to
be who should start... I wish I could do a 3 RB and 2 WR
maximum instead. Which RB I choose each week will be a
guessing game; I have two runners and two goal line specialists.
I have 4 nice RB and would like to use more than just 2 of them
each week. :(

NB. I am amazed at the information that is available on players
and games and the whole interactive AOL set up. Some folks did
a lot of work to set all that up. The sites are really COOL!

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

i never really have a plan going into a draft i pretty much try and look for 'value' this usually not going with RBs early and stalking up on WR and hoping some of the later round RB's pan out. Being this was first time i have ever slowed draft i probably could have done more during draft reasearch.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

Don't really have a favorite pick ask me at the end of the season when i go yeah i got him in the 10th round. If i could have done something over i would have done more research on IDPs and drafted more LBs i think have 4 decient LBs each week will be quite valuable and with so many IDPs being drafted it will be a real rush to pick up ones on the WW.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

I really like greybear's team, probably because he drafted several players that i was going to draft if they made it back to me. I also like his mix of players very flexible for picking up players and is not to dependent on any one player.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Getting LJ with the third pick i really wanted alexander and really did not want LT. i still have this feeling LJ is going to get hurt before the season is out.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

nothing besides what was mentioned in 2.

Hey Judy, I enjoyed reading your write-up. I think your team looks really good for a fantasy rookie, except for your WR position. Brown and McCardell are what I would call good fantasy #2 and #3 receivers. It is going to be tough for you to match up against your opponents without a true #1 receiver. Even if either of those plays like a #1 receiver, you don't have a legit starter to fill out your third position and byes are going to be tough. Maybe Stokley or Reed has a big year for you, though, but I think it's still going to be tough when playing against the Fitz's, Holts, CJ's, TOs, Boldins, etc. I don't know what's left available, but maybe you can find a better receiver on the wire this year for Marshall who is probably not a bad pick for a dynasty keeper league but shouldn't be of any value this season. He's fairly banged up and is currently the #4 WR for the Broncos. Okay, just peeked at the WR who were drafted and if you want a couple ideas for who might be available (can't see if you ran waivers yet) feel free to shoot me an email. It isn't much, but there is an option or two available.

I love your 1-2 punch at RB of Williams and Bush and think you will find that you start those two every week minus their bye weeks. Brady and Heap should be top players at their positions. IDP is a guessing game for a lot of players, but you might find some players on the wire who have break-out seasons. This season should be a lot of fun for you and you should be able to take what you learn from this year to help you be even more prepared next year.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

My original plan included a commish other than me and a top 5 pick =). First I want to thank VP. Without him for stepping up and volunteering to be commish at the start, this league would have never taken off. Unfortunately, we got a late start, (about a week later than the other RIFCs) and time became an immediate concern. Despite VP’s good intentions, he didn’t have the constant internet access to get a draft of this magnitude done in a short period of time. I initially had planned to try commishing a league, at some point, so I thought I’d offer to help him out, here and there. Stick my toe in and “test the waters”. I really had no intention to take over as commish. But during my duties as deputy commish, it looked like we might crash and burn, so I took it upon myself to make an executive decision. I knew VP might be unhappy with that decision, but he was not around to consult with (VP and I had been communicating via email, overnight, as I am in the US and he is in Europe) and without an immediate decision, this league might have had a civil war and would surely have died as a result of it. Someone who had originally signed up eight days earlier went AWOL on us. We assumed that since he signed up for our Kafenatid draft and the AOL league game site, that he was a go. As he was timing out in round 2 (he had already timed out in the first round), it became apparent that we had been forgotten about and had better find a new manager FAST. Any way, long story short, we had to replace 2 managers in the first 2 days of our late starting draft and I dove head-first into some stormy waters.

I guess as an inexperienced commish, I was somewhat distracted at various times during this draft. And there were plenty of distractions. But I refuse to use that as an excuse. Instead, I’ll blame it on the fact that I had the #14 hole in the draft. I kind of liked the end for having 2 picks in a row, but despite our AA status, we have a very savvy group here, and there were very few crumbs that fell to the bottom. I was continually filling my queues. It seemed like the entire draft was coming right off my cheat sheets.
-I guess that because of his preseason injury, Portis did fall to me and I knew if I picked Julius Jones(2.01), it might be smart to handcuff Marion Barber(7.14), which I did. Now I just have to just hope that Parcell’s doesn’t go RBBC on me. I hated to handcuff that early, but looking back at the Priest/LJ situation, last year, Jones' propensity to get dinged, and the fact that Parcell's could just wake up one morning and make Barber the #1, as he seems to like the kid, I'm OK with my decision.
-As far as WR go, unless you get a top tier guy, on any given game you can pick a good WR just as well by using a blindfold and a dartboard, IMHO. I guess I could have picked a top tier WR or a less risky RB, like Parker or Dunn at 2.01, but this is how I picked and until it’s played out no one knows for sure.
-Since I missed the top tier of WR I decided to get a top QB at 3.14 and Hasselbeck should fit the bill, but I got a good backup should Matt and the Seahawks suffer the same fate as other recent NFC Super Bowl losers.
-I didn’t really like the Tony Gonzalez pick at 4.01, but I figured I could wait on my next tier of WRs, plus I figured that some good TEs would be picked by the time it got back to me. I was correct, as Heap, Witten, Cooley, Shockey, and Crumpler all fell before my next pick. Hindsight says I should have strongly considered T.J. Houshmandzadah, but I think that Carson Palmer had not yet played to prove that he was completely healthy, so I went Gonzo.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

-Greg Jones was my favorite pick, until he got injured about 2 hours after I drafted him at 9.14. By then, IDPs were beginning to fall off the board and I figured that a Fred Taylor injury would make him the #1 option at RB in Jacksonville by week 3 or 4. At first, they reported it as a sprain; only after an MRI did it show a tear.
-I read that Chris Simms really understands Gruden’s complex offensive system and he could start for my team on any given weekend despite Hasselbeck as my preseason #1 QB. He was my lucky 13.14 pick.
-When I finally dipped into the IDP pool, I was so delighted to see both Derrick Brooks and James Farrior available, that I failed to notice that they had the same bye weeks. Doh!!! I compounded this mistake by picking a LB on IR at 20.01. I further compounded this mistake by picking yet another LB who did not survive his team’s final cut. It’s going to be interesting to see how starting a couple of extra IDPs pans out this year. When the RIFC makes changes, they usually make the games better. I’m guessing that they’ll be evaluating this one and tweak it if necessary, before next season. Most of the IDPs on every team will probably be swapped out by midseason anyway. I look at the entire last 10 rounds of the draft to be placeholders for players who will be picked up on wavers or FA.

No do overs for me. I’d prefer to play it out and try to learn something from any mistakes I’ve made.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

We’ve got some pretty good looking teams in AA this year. Ref, Treasonist, and Peter N, and maybe Greybear, TD, weykool and a few others are experienced in the slow draft format. All those teams have strengths. I think that Judy, as a rookie, did pretty well also, though her homer picks may cause her some problems when their bye week arrives. Also, her bias against Redskin’s and Cowboy’s players might hurt her team in the long run. Good fantasy managers choose players using their head, not their heart.
The expectation for my team is to do well enough to advance to AAA next year and redeem my last place finish there, last year. In football, more than baseball and hoops, luck is a bigger factor because there are far less days for scoring opportunities.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

First, the fact that there even was a RIFC AA entry at all. And then, the fact that we actually finished on time. After day one, our estimated time to finish our draft was late September, almost 4 weeks into the season.
Also, when I was loading rosters on teams in AOL, I was surprised how many players drafted were already on IR. There were more than just a few. I even had one and I did my best to include bye weeks and current injuries into my research.
I was not really surprised that people timed out, disappearing for long periods of time. That’s the nature of AA leagues. For many, it’s their first draft of this type and they are reluctant to use a queue system, wanting instead, to be there to agonize over and savor every pick. They fail to realize that this thing can drag on for weeks, if the commish allows it to. We pretty much forced people to use the queue system by shortening the clock and skipping people who timed out more than once. This was also an unpopular decision for a few, but we finished the draft in 8 days. That’s got to be a record for any RIFC AA. This timely finish allowed us to iron out residual draft and post draft issues, run our 48 hour waver period and still have a couple of days for free agency.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

No, not really. I might have made a few mistakes, but hopefully, I’ll learn from them. My main reason to put myself through a long deep draft like this, other than the competition and fun of the league itself, is because I’m addicted to the TSN Ultimate Salary Cap Football game and this research and draft prepares me for that format. I won several leagues last year, including the GuruPatron league. Those boys gave me a serious beat down this year in baseball and I’m hoping to deliver a payback this football season.

First and foremost, I want to thank Guru for this site. I think that some of the people who frequent the RotoGuru forums are the best and most knowledgeable fantasy sports managers out there. Thanks to all those RIFC affiliated league members for their help and wisdom. They know who they are. Special thanks to Ref. He rapidly recruited new league members when a couple bailed on us at a bad time and as an experienced commish, his help and encouragement to me was priceless. And lastly, thanks to each individual AA member who hung in during the draft. Despite some serious angst, at times, I really enjoyed this draft and I know that the season is going to be a blast.

To all RIFC AA members and anyone else who reads this, I encourage you all to make a donation and become a GuruPatron.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

My plan was ......don't really know. Get 2 RB's early. Get one of the top TE's. Get at least one WR early, since you need 3. Get a good DEF, wait on IDP's, get a Kicker late, get a decent backup QB, get extra RB's and WR's maybe some handcuff people. .....something like that. I wanted to try to get Brady or Gates with my 3rd pick, but they didn't make it to me. So then it was between Hasselback and Chambers and I figured Hasselback had a better chance of making it back to me in round 4. That didn't work out either. Otherwise my general plan worked out.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

I like picks 14 thru 23. The last couple years I was in a 20 team league with 9 IDP's, so I know a lot of these guys. It's weird, because you can watch a game differently ....trying to see who made the tackle or got the sack. Was it one of your guys?
The rest was ordinary. Trent Green at 9.11 may be good. Bears Defense at 6.04 is probably too early; but I wanted to get them. Andre Johnson at 4.04 probably won't work out.

Starting with my 9th and 10th picks, I tried to get one offensive and one defensive player with each set of picks. This worked thru the 22nd round, and forced me to select an IDP every other round.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

I remember Ref took about 5 of my players. He looks pretty good. It's too hard for me to tell.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

That it was completed. For awhile anything that could go wrong, did go wrong. Worst case scenerios took place, literally to the minute. Cheers to mjd and others for making it happen. I always, kind of figured it would get done, once it got started. Just reduce the clock, or something. Player-wise, there was an early mini-run on TE's. Kickers went late.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

I should have taken Terry Glenn with pick 9.11 and picked Green with pick 10.04. Should have tried to trade down pick 4.04.
