0 Subject: 2007 Survivor Playoff Challenge

Posted by: Shak
- [156371210] Fri, Jan 05, 2007, 09:19

Welcome to the 2007 Survivor Playoff Challenge. The scoring rules will be the same as Survivor with the exception of the D/ST. I believe the D/ST scoring is 6 points for a TD, two points for any turnovers, and 1 point for each sack. Correct me if I'm wrong. All entrants may submit up to two teams. Each team will select a lineup each week using one of the following formations:

Pro Formation……1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 DEF/ST

Three Wide………1 QB, 1 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 DEF/ST

Full House………..1 QB, 3 RB, 1 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 DEF/ST

Run and Shoot…..1 QB, 1 RB, 4 WR, 1 K, 1 DEF/ST

Each team may use a player only once, i.e. if Brady is your QB this weekend, you may not use him again, even if NE reaches the SB. Email your entries to me or post them on this thread prior to kickoff Saturday. I'm playing golf, but I will post everyone's entry ASAP after kickoff.

The entry fee is $10 per team and will be payable to the winner immediately following the SB. The new rule for this year is there will be no controversy and everyone will pay the winner promptly, no matter how badly you may dislike me, err, I mean him/her. Get those entries in!

A friend of mine is going to a draft today, yes, I said draft. Eight teams, eight players. You only draft once and no trades. You survive with what players you draft. Basically Survivor for the playoffs. I have been trying to help him out in strategy, stop laughing, and it is really difficult. Lineups are QB,RB,RB/WR,WR,WR,TE,K, and D. The more I think about it, the harder it seems to be to even get the first round pick solid. Having to guess who is going all of the way or who may put up huge points one week ( LJ ) and be enough to carry you through.

This definitely is something we should think about for next year. Roll the bones immediately after last game and start the draft on Monday. Should be able to complete it before the first round of playoffs. What do you think?

We did that a few years back from JHHH's house if you remember, I think we had a few guys drafting via the phone and email with about 6-7 of us watching the game at Jons. It was tough I remember, you lost players each week and even though there was always a clear cut favorite team to make it all way it was very hard to not draft a guy like LJ. Me and Jon were talking baout this weeks game and you really can make a case for any of them winning, none are clear cut favorites except for maybe NE. You would say Indy, but that rushing defense is so bad any team can beat them now.

I think Indy will win, but I won't rule out KC. I think Philly will beat the Giants, unless Tiki unloads again. The toughest game to pick was the Dallas game. I am not a big favorite of Dallas and them playing away from home with a rookie QB, the nerves might get to him. Rothleskljfkser looked terrible his first time in the playoffs and the Pitt D pulled him through. The only thing going for Dallas is that Alexander isn't the same as the past two years and their WR's are all banged up. NE should put a beating on, but who knows.

I don't remember doing that draft, but if I did, I probably lost anyway. New strategy this year though. Heck I can only get better right?

Mike I have every confidence in your ability to draft a winning lineup. Saying that I probably have put more Mike dollars in the bank then anyone else's:)

here's my take on the game's. Indy/KC will be a shootout one running the ball and the other passing at will. Philly game with come down to Eli not making mistakes if that happen then Philly wins. The Jets have already beaten NE, but I can't see that happening again. Dallas/ Seattle game is a tossup with the hawks a slight edge because of the way Dallas played the later part of the season..and Romo has to play well and get the ball to Glenn and TO as much as possible.

I have to agree with you on that one Ed. The Indy game will be a shootout and it will all matter on how well Peyton can do in order to catch up to LJ's 250 and 3 TD's, could be first half totals.

Philly game will go their way. Eli hasn't looked too great as of late and got a butt whooping last time they played.

New England should roll over the Jets. This one could actually see players being rested in the 4th quarter!!

Dallas could sneak this one out if Romo is patient. The crowd could play a big influence on this one. With DJ questionable, it puts a big kink in their offense. I am sure he will play, but he probably won't be 100%. Still calling this one with a flip of a coin though.

No RBP or STB? Someone give them a call!!

Joe doesn't ever accept money when he wins these things. He makes sooo much tax free cash in Kosovo he doesn't see $40 or $50 or $200 helping him out much. I keep trying to convince him that I'm his long lost brother with four kids to feed and if he's feeling so generous that he could send some of that Kosovo cash to me. Especially after all the clothes that I've sent him over the years....even if they were a few sizes too small. Sorry about that Joe:)

I will post some numbers on who was selected for this week in a bit.

Buddy's TE is Witten for both teams. He listed Feely as his K, but I think we should make it Akers unless we hear differently.

Thanks for the love guys but I will be accepting the money this year
due to the fact that I am nearly fired......I think JHHH handed me his
"good player" jinx due to the fact that LJ and Alexander both had
their worst games ever and manning played like his little brother. I
would advise anyone that did not play P. Manning to choose him
next week cause he is going to make up for this week....getting
ready for the eagles game so talk to you all soon. Leave my mom
alone Ednecks...

On the spreadsheet sent out by Shak it has Philly listed as the kicker for Buddy 1 and Akers listed as the kicker for Buddy 2. I was just trying to get clarification on who his kicker was. He also had no TE listed for either team on the spreadsheet.

Yes, Clyde, their are 16 teams and the players listed above are who were selected for this week. That means that 14 out of 16 of us wasted a slot starting LJ this week, so the damage was actually minimal.

It doesn't look like anyone has gone out and put up huge numbers. Harmon looks to be in the lead as of half time in the Philly game. Some piss poor performances are keeping the scores low. Look for next week to be a critical week.

This isn't official, as Shak is the scorekeepin guru, but its what I came up with. There may be errors, so don't get hung up with my #'s... wait for Shak's. I've never seen it this bunched up. Everyone is still alive. Kudos to Harm and Prowler, as they have 4 of the top 6 spots... by my math.

Picks of the week, IMO where 1 owner taking Stevens (high scorer), and 1 owner taking Addai (#2 high scorer).

No one capitalized on Pennington, J. Jones, D. Clark, or J. Gaffney... who all had great weeks.

Right on, Ed. I will make the corrections from week one (2 more Witten and change 1 Akers to Feely) and have a running total column too. It's good to know who has which players left to use, especially going into the championship games.

I will echo your comments on Shak too. I think that after I win I will let him keep one team's entry fee for doing the grunt work.

Not to rub in in but when you play a SEC team you better bring the lumber, much more physical then any other league, especially the PAC 2 :). OSU looks a little shell shocked..I still think they can make it a game 34-14 at the half..20 points hard to make up against a good Florida Defense...

Plain and simple, The Big 10 11 was overated this year. They are going to end up 2-5 in bowls and neither the Rose or BSC look to be close games. Hard to believe how many people were clamoring for the OSU-Michigan rematch for the BCS. If that happened, I am sure we'd be seeing OSU crowned champs and none the wiser.

Smart move Shak..

Even Kentucky won a Bowl game this year..OSU has been an elite team for years, so it's hard to argue with their success, but I tend to agree that the whole Big 10 in general was a little overrated. Sometimes certain teams just match up better against others...Florida plays USC and the outcome might be different..hard to say, it isn't over yet!!!

I told Jon I don't see any reason to not play LT on both my teams because If they win he's probably got 30-40 points anyway and If they lose he's probably scores nicely as will. I saw it as a Win-Win situation with the worst case senerio the other teams will have LT going against the Indy Defense next week, which would have been nice for them. I honestly thought NE had a chance to win and it was a good gamble to get my points while I could. I mean their not to many scoring options on the NE team for the rest of the way out. I was a little surprized that only 7 teams started LT and that I was the only team to start McAllister.

Your picks worked out well for you. I was saving LT for the superbowl. Had SD and NO both made it to the superbowl, it sure would have made your starting RB decision for that game easier.

I think the whole Idea is to get the maximum points from a player no matter when you play him. I can understand trying to gain an advantage during the Superbowl by saving some of these Studs, but If your too far behind by then or they get knocked out then it was a waste. Like everything else sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. If I play Duece and he gets 5 points and you guys that waited might have gotten the 33 points later on...certainly luck and a calculated risk sometimes works out!!

You are absolutely correct, but I was also thinking in terms of having viable starters for that superbowl too. It would be like having already started P. Manning and T. Brady. That gives you the choice of starting Grossman or Brees this week, hoping he has a good game, but his team loses so you actually have a QB to start in the superbowl. Having LT score so well and get booted worked out perfectly for those who started him. I really expected him to score big no matter who he played against so was "saving" him. Trust me, if I could make decisions in hindsight, I would have started him this week.

I mean the perfect playoff would have been to be within 15 points of the lead going into the SB and still have Manning or LT plus a shit load of RB's like Bush, McAllister. I think that's unrealistic to think that you could actually play players that lost and still scored great at the same time. Most likely to happen is you have guys like Dillon/caldwell/Maloney/Henderson/Gaffney/Colston left and your stuck playing those players just like the rest of us. I mean right now your sitting pretty if you still have Manning/Brady/Bush/Duce/Jones/Berrian/Colston still left..Right now on my leading team I will have either Brady or Manning to start in the SB and, Either Bush/Benson/Addai/Jones/Dillon at the RB spot. At this point no big name WR's are left except except INDY's Harrison/Wayne. Bottom line is I will be certain to have a great QB left at least two RB's left and my only question mark is weather I'll have a Kicker. It's not over by a longshot, I won a few years ago on the last week with a Delhomme to Mush 70+ yard TD in the waining momments of the SB and won it when it was looking like a certain win for someone else....I think anyone within 25 points of the lead going into the SB has a legit chance of winning.

I have to cross my fingers and hope that Grossman has a good game, but not enough to beat NO. Not likely that Grossman will have a good game, but I think Brees will be in the big dance. The Saints have a decent D and have a lot of weapons at offense. If I want points from a QB for both weeks, I believe I will have to go with Grossman. I screwed myself for AFC QB's. I really didn't think Indy would beat Baltimore and with the Pats on the road and SD having rested a week, especially with LT, I expected them to go through as well. Not liking my chances right now as Ed still has a chance with either team. I can only hope he picks different than me and his team doesn't score. All it takes though is one different pick and having that player go off.

I keep feeling that having two teams is kinda cheating. It would be much more difficult to only have one team. This way you get to experiment with both teams on who to pick each week. If one teams goes, who cares, your other team will probably have produced. I can see the other way as well trying to get two teams up in contention, but as the weeks go by, one of your teams will probably run out of players. Just rambling.

Mike having two teams isn't cheating but it does increase your odds of winning a little bit no matter what Shak says. I think i've proven that you can score large with both teams.."excuse me I'm trying to get my large head into the door."

Arrrrrggggggg. Do we really want to dig up this dead horse?? Ed, you are truly the master of the obvious: "it does increase your odds of winning a little bit." Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think I ever disagreed with that very simple premise.

Let me ask this. Was it a good idea to go to two leagues in Survivor? I think it was because if you lost a team early in one league, you still had a 2nd chance in the other league. The same holds true here. Joe and TB elected to go with one team in the playoff challenge and neither is doing very well. If they had a second team, maybe they would still have a horse in the race. Jon and my teams will tell you that's not a certainty, but it does increase the odds of having at least one good entry.

At this point, I don't think it makes the strategy any simpler for any player other than Ed, as everyone else has only one dog in the hunt and one also-ran (or two also-rans). Those players now have to focus most of their attention on the dog in the hunt team.

There are just too many combinations and philosphies in this contest to think that just because you can enter two teams, you are going to some how cover all the bases and are guaranteed of having a team in the hunt.

I really hate it when you guys get me worked up like this!!

One hypothetical queston for you.

Scenario one. Ed and I both enter one team and we use different stategies.

Scenario two. I enter two teams and use different strategies for each team.

Which scenario has the greatest chance of winning?

Me thinks it's the same. I don't see the difference. Actually, since Ed is in the equation, scenario one is obviously better.
80Shak

Another point, while I'm still spun up. You play the lottery and play two tickets using two strategies. The odds of winning are 1 in 50 million. By playing a 2nd ticket are your odds of winning 2 in 50 million or have you halved the odds and made it only 1 in 25 million? Obviously the answer is 2 in 50 million. In other words you have covered 2 of the 50 million possibilities. That's a mere drop in the ocean.

Although the playoff challenge does not have 50 million options, you will not come close to covering all possibilities with 2 teams.

However, if there are only 20 entries, one would have a 2 in 20 chance of winning -- not one in ten. No more, no less. Everyone will have different ideas/strategies, so one entry has an equal shot of winning as another -- whether it came from the same brain or not.

Now it is true that for someone with the expertise and acumen of Ed to have two shots can easily seem like cheating to someone like Mike. With that I can understand.

Changing the subject. Six teams (including the 2nd and both 3rd place teams) have used two of the four surviving QBs. They must now choose wisely and hope they have a QB in the SB. If Indy and NO win, four teams are guaranteed of not having a QB. Not having a QB in the SB will certainly not increase one's chances of winning.

LOL...He He....I'll agree with you Shak, didn't mean to open old wounds.

Strategy is very hard in this format. You still have to select the guys who score, I think people are talking about an advantage when you can pick someone like Benson on one team and Jones on your other team and hope one of them goes off. I'm soley in the lead because I played LT and Mcallister who were the big scorer's last week and no one else had that Combo. My other team is decently placed because i played LT and Westbrook. It's all about playing a player at the right time and keeping some decent players in reserve and I think I've achieved that with my leading team...Strategy is a fickle thing, it might work this year and next year it doesn't...you can never tell it's all about making your best decision based on your facts and feelings and hoping that's the right choice...stating the obvious again I know, but it's true.

Now that I got that out of the way, why does ESPN keeping showing the Reggie Wayne clip in which he caught the ball out of bounds as a highlight. I mean yeah, it looked nice, but it was not a catch and had no impact on the game at all. Just another example of the NFL/ESPN trying to sell their product with BS I guess... Goodnight Ednecks

No worries on anyone that wants to wait for Paypal, they suck on making any decisions, wish there was a better site then Paypal to use and I'd do it...My wife uses it for her Ebay crap and is usually arguing with someone who didn't recieve her package or something supid like that..Paypal stops your account until they resolve the dispute and there is always someone out there trying to screw with you in some way or another....I'm not in any hurry for the money.
