0 Subject: Auction League Commissioners questions

Does anyone, have ANY questions re the process of the draft?

Take note, that at least 2 managers have not been active in the bidding, which may be a part of their strategy or it may mean nothing at all. Possibly, they are busy, or disinterested, or maybe they dont want to give any hints as to what they are thinking. Paranoia, is not always a bad thing gentlemen!

Also, take note of your bench/roster slots. The actual auction will involve 2 additional starting slots (the flex wr/te and the flex wr/rb positions) and only grants two additional bench slots.

The mock has been proceeding rather smoothly, and I thank-you for your participation!

I know Matt (Scarecrow) was out of town and without computer until yesterday, so that explains why he hasn't been involved.

I really don't have any questions about the process. I've done auction leagues for baseball and basketball before, so I know how things go. The online, multiple player thing adds an element of chaos to the proceedings that I'm still getting a handle on though!

I enjoy this and look forward to the real draft. Thank you Sarge and wiggs for keeping this running smoothly.

Actually, I did think of one question.

Is it legal to make trades during the auction? If so, what are the procedures?

I can see this being useful if you accidentally get stuck with an extra RB that in retrospect you wish you hadn't bought (for instance).

Trades can indeed take place during the auction...the players being traded, take their salaries and thus salary cap hits, with them. Managers are free, to swap monies in the trade as well however.
(The player you're giving has a $20 salary and the one you are getting has a $12 salary. The other manager, lacks the room to absorb the $20 salary, sooooooooooo you could offer to "pay" the $8 difference, taking a $12 hit from the new player and an $8 hit from "salary assistance" on the traded player. The other manager, then gives up a $12 hit from his opriginal player and only takes a $12 hit from the new player.)

I picked up LT in a trade during the draft last year. Straight cash for a contract.

I one 1 player and posted a new one but I haven't been active for the reasons I stated previously.

1. I don't want to give away my strategy.
2. I don't have a strategy because I haven't done my research.

I found my old spreadsheet so I have that ready to go, I don't think it needs any updating as nothing as changed in the league set-up.

I would prefer not to finalize the draft, if the majority feel the need to I'll just name players to feel in my roster (based on the rule that the if the winning bidder fills his roster, the manager with the most most open slots submits the next player)

Is that correct Sarge? I remember a minor incident last year where a manager got "stuck" with a player that he named because no one else wanted them.

Once the actual draft begins yes. Once a managers roster is full, then they no longer name on to the board, but rather that manager with the fewest filled slots will name one.

That manager who got "stuck" with a player, got stuck BECAUSE they didnt seem to believe the rules applied to them, and named a player they didnt want, VERY late in the draft. They then disputed why that naming required a $1 bid. IOW, if you are naming a player to the board, and have only 1 slot left to fill and that slot is NOT a bench slot, you had damn well better name a player of your needed position to the board.

Nicely "stated" Sarge. I only pointed it out so that anyone who hasn't been in the league before didn't get caught in a similar situation. There is much more strategy in an auction draft (IMO) than a normal snake draft. When you post a player to the board, you need to be aware that you might end-up with that player.

Indeed. Particularly late in the process, when everyone has seriously begun watching their pennies.

Early in the draft, its not at all unusual to name a player to the board you dont want. Its not even all that odd, to name them to the board with a $12 bid or so. (Depending of course on their position and who they are.) But late in the draft, naming someone to the board begins to carry a greater and greater chance, of the naming managers "ending up with", that player.

OK, now #6 confuses me.

If, say, I have filled my entire roster including bench slots, except that I need a kicker... I cannot name a non-kicker to the board? I can sort of see the reasoning to that, but want to make sure I have things right.

exactly. To name a player to the board in a roster slot which you cannot win the bid, is to submit an illegal bid. $5 fine. So...if you have 1 spot open and its a TE or a QB or D or K or...

it would behoove you to name such a player. If your starting slots are filled, and you have an open bench slot, then the named player could be any position. HOWEVER, you'll want to be aware of which positions you have how much depth on in your bench. (5 bench slots and lets say you have 2 rb and 2 wr on there, with no backup QB. I doubt, I'd be in a hurry to name a WR or TE with my last opportunity.)

No questions at this time. Thanks for doing the mock auction; this will be my first auction draft and it really helped me get a sense for how this works.
Thanks again Sarge for running this...I can see you (and wiggs) do alot of work to keep things moving along.

Thanks to all for the rather smooth Mock Auction process. You did really well, monitoring your bids. (Well, 'cept for me. lol) Ironic that it was I who got fined for illegal bidding, when I harped and harped on the topic. It is WAY easy to do however, so in the real auction, please be sure to watch your bids accordingly.

The actual roster staffing auction will most likely begin on Tues Aug 7 at 8 am eastern time. "The Board", will be put up on Monday evening at some point, but the timer for the 8 hrs to win a player, will not begin until Tues morning.

Is there a reason we're waiting until 8/7 to start? I'm all for sooner the better and that's 10 days away?

Thanks for all your work on the mock draft sarge. That was helpful.

Wiggs posted in another thread that he would be out all next week. Based on our history, we should have no problems finishing by the start of the season.

I would rather wait to start. The closer we can get to the start of the season the better. It hasn't happened to me yet (knock on wood), but drafting a stud RB and seeing him get a season ending injury prior to the start of the season isn't fun.

Do you see a problem if my entire draft strategy revolves around getting Peyton Manning for $1?

Frick I say it's fine if I can keep my plan in place of getting LT for $2. He's worth 2 times Manning so that seems like a fair value for him...

<---pretty sure the only way those players go for those prices, is if we cut the team salary caps to around $12.50 and allow bids in ten-cent increments. (which we are NOT doing FTR.)

IIRC LT went for around 30-40% of the cap last year so for $2 with a $12.50 that would be a steal.

Sarge,

Will you be using the same method as w/ the mock draft in selecting the initial players that will go to the board?

I look forward to the draft.

I'll be looking at 1/2 dz different mock/expert drafts, and pretty much using rd 3 and maybe a couple rd 4 players. I do it this way, since it allows managers the freedom of naming with some strategy n mind as well as these are not "duds" but perfectly sound if not 'great' players.

A. What are the open hours for bidding?
(EX. 7am-11pm (E))

B. 8 hours with no bid is winning bid

C. What was the final say on Free agents?
Bid or set fee???

D. We start on Tuesday?

I will be camping this up coming week. With limited ISP access. Most likey only being able to check in twice a day. Sorry that it will cause delaying bids. Im really hoping my cell has isp service at the campground.

Bid clock starts at 8 am Mon thru Fri, eastern time as posted by the rotoguru time stamp.

Clock stops nightly at midnight eastern EXCEPT on Fri evening when it stops at 10pm eatern and does not restart until Mon 8 am eastern.

Site is set for bidding on Free Agents. I'll be monitoring this VERY closely and if it doesnt work, we'll either attempt a 'fix' once or revert to fixed prive of $5. I do NOT know, how the site will work if you are for ex dropping a player with a $20 price and getting a $10 credit, and then your bid requires that $10 credit to make. It could be "interesting" the first few weeks.

I'll prolly post the starting 12 tonight, though it may not get done until Monday. Going on a 2-day bike camping trip in the morning and dont know how I'll feel when we get back Mon. If its hot, I'm gonna be whooped tired. Once the thread gets started, whether tonight or Monday night, I'd appreciate NO BIDDING until Mon night at the soonest. I undrstand that time constraints may cause you to not be available at 8 am Tue eastern, so a Monday evening bid is fine. (The clock still wont start until 8 am Tues.) But I'd like to NOT have the thread get cluttered with bids over Sat evening, Sunday and Monday.
