Subject: RIFC AAA#1 Draft Discussion
Posted by: Trip
- Leader [13961611] Fri, Aug 17, 2007, 13:48
The clock will start on Monday morning, but I will activate the draft on Saturday. The clock will be set at 6 hours, with a moratorium from 11pm-7am EDT. If the clock expires, the next person in line will get to draft, and the skipped drafter will make up his skipped pick whenever he can. The clock will continue to run on weekends.
People at the endpoints of the draft have only one single time limit to make their consecutive picks. Similarly, the clock will be manually advanced to skip past anyone who already has a pick in arrears, unless other arrangements have been made in advance of that pick.
We will maintain a draft discussion thread here, but it will probably not be used extensively. If you know that you have pending time constraints, please post them in this thread. (e.g., "I'll be away until 6pm ET, so if my pick is due before then, you'll have to wait.") To the extent that you can alert everyone to potential availability issues, you can help others to plan their check-in times accordingly. That's simply good draft etiquette.
If you know you will be away when your next pick is likely to be due, you can can set up a queue in kafenatid and designate one of more managers to pick on your behalf. Your queue will not be visible until it is your turn to pick. By default, I am able to submit picks for anyone, but you should designate me so that I receive the email alert when it is your turn.
I rosters at the fanball site have been cleard, and I ask that each of you pick up your player as soon as you draft him. I will also attempt to make pickups for teams using a designated picker, so that we can maintain as complete a list of free agents as possible.
When drafting, there is no need to draft every position. For example, if you want to skip a kicker, be my guest. However, the Fanball software will force you to fill each of the 14 active slots when you set your lineup for each game. You will not have the ability to leave an active slot blank, so plan your bench needs accordingly.
Rationales will be expected for each pick, but deleayed by two rounds. When we near the end of round two, I will set up a thread for those.
Any picks made prior to Monday morning are discretionary, and not timed. There is no need to get an early start - but feel free to do so, if you are so inclined. The real purpose of activating the draft early is to allow people to set up designated pickers and queues, and to (re-)familiarize themselves with the "On the Clock" software at kafenatid.net.
A final caveat: Please refrain from mentioning undrafted players, either in this thread, or in your posted rationale.
Another alert: If you have set up a queue and have made it "available", I (or any of your designated pickers) will make the pick on your behalf - unless you have posted specific instructions to the contrary in this thread. If you do not want your queue used, make sure it is marked "unavailable".
Final alert: I do not have access to Kafenatid while at work. I am pretty reliable while at home, so feel free to add me as a DP, however I do will have access from 8AM-6PM ET. On the same note, I will set up everyone in the league as my DP, so that they can choose for me while I don't have access. I will post my selection in this thread in most cases. If you don't want to be a DP for me, please let me know. |

Hey Trip, I noticed in the league rules that points for Punt/Kickoff Return Yards are listed under the Team Defenses section rather than the individual players. Does that mean those points go to the Special/Def Team rather than the DB's,WR's,etc. like it was last year?

Hey Doug, I set you up as my designated picker like we talked about. I have a seven player queue that will cover both of my picks. Please just take whoever is at the top of the list for each pick.

Was out at a friends BD party this afternoon/evening... and the answer to Athletics Guy's question might affect my overall draft strategy. My guess is that it's either an error or just the way the AOL site lists it... but that the points are actually is supposed to go to the individual player. Unfortunately I can't seem to log on to AOL's site at the moment.
Anyway, I just want confirmation that this is in fact how it will work for our league before I/we proceed further.

OK, I've convinced myself that if there were going to be any deviation from the RIFC rules it would have been discussed. If for any reason AOL can't handle individual return yards, I'll suggest that we move to Fanball.
Picks made... sorry for the delay.

Yeah, it worked out well for me... if you had traded up, TB would have taken Bush, and I would have taken MJD at 1.13... instead I still got the #2 guy on my board at 2.04. I guess sometimes it pays to sit tight. ;)

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how MJD does now that the league knows about him. I just couldn't bring myself to draft an NFL RB with the same height as me. ;-) Granted, he's bigger and quicker. :-)

The commish will execute the trade.
But if we want to move things along, you can just ask Letter J who he wants to draft in this slot (and likewise he can execute 2.12 on your behalf) and then the commish will swap the players (as well as remaining picks) to the proper teams when processes the trade.

On behalf of letter_J, I did the following:
- Stating the Obvious: Picks 2.12 and 3.03 are now Hubble's pursuant to the trade (Post # 26);
- I logged in as Letter_J and designated Hubble as his picker and made "free form" available.
- Hubble can now go in at 2.12 and 3.03 and pick as if he is Letter_J.
- The 2.07 - 2.12 and 3.03 - 3.08 selections can be swaped once the picks are made.
- Letter_J can then disable the free-form picking after the 3.03 pick... and I can go home.
I hope this works for all of you.
Best,

I have posted the 1st draft rationales thread here.
My biggest pet peeve is not people who don't post their rationales. Life is busy. My biggest pet peeve is people who don't place rationale placeholder when they don't place rationale placeholders. There are very few excuses for this. If you make a draft selection for someone, please post a placeholder. If you left your rationale at home or haven't finished it, please place a placeholder. If your rationale is chock full of undrafted players, please place a placeholder.
I hope that was clear enough.

That's fine, all he is asking is that if we aren't ready to post a rationale that we put in a placeholder so they don't back up and someone has to enter 5 or 6 in a row just to post theirs. Or if we make a pick from a Queue for someone that we put a placeholder in for that person.

6 hours is forever. At least he is on the endcap and only gets one clock. We have like 2 weeks (or less if you count time for a WW run) and need to get moving. So a couple rounds per day should be the minimum goal.

All current rationales through this post are moved over to the Rationale thread.
I try hard to copy each rationale over accurately, but you have to add HTML text in most to create line breaks and errors can occur. Please check your rationale and verify it's accuratcy with the original post. Thanks.
I'll delete the one's thru post #75 later to clear up any confusion (my own) with future rationale posts and to make it easier to see new posts.

I'd really like to make as much progress as possible between now and next Monday 8/27. I leave for a business trip that AM and am unsure how regularly I will be able to check in. That's still several days off though, and as we get to the later rounds, queues tend to "last longer".
I went back through my rationales and realized that some of the players/strategy I mentioned would make me unable to post for several more rounds still, so I just went through and deleted those items so that I could get caught up.

Hubble - I'd recommend making your pick and then adding players to your queue for any future picks you'd want to make.
Your queue won't be available for anyone to pick from at that point and you can add as many players to it as you want and rerank them after they're in the queue. IIRC the Commish can see our queues all the time and does not have to be a designated picker. That's to make picks in an emergency should the need arise of course.
The alternative is to turn off your queue before you add players and turn it back on after you pick. that's too much for me to remember to do. ;)

Tax, IIRC this is two "turns" in a row where you've been on the clock for 4+ hours. I think we have a generous clock in case things come up, and that's great... but please let's make sure not to make a habit of this. Not stressin', just want to nip it in the bud before we need to start thinking about changing the clock.

In another thread GoatLocker said Tax was travelling and that he'd be calling him soon. So hopefully we'll have his pick before much longer.
Hey Tax, if your access is intermittent and you aren't using queues, then please provide a couple of us with phone contact info so we don't get held up like this again.

Well, Tax is back on the clock for another 6 hours. I don't think this is appropriate... once a pick is skipped, subsequent picks should be skipped until you return and get caught up. We can't keep being held up like this.
I'd be willing to give him another hour or so, since GoatLocker said he was going to call him... but after than I think we need to move forward to the next pick.

He should continue to be skipped. I can send my kafenatid logon to whomever wants to manipulate the clock.

If anyone with an upcoming pick wants to swap this round and next, let me know. Might even throw in a little something extra in a later round if it makes the diff.

I just made both picks for Tax, so he is caught up. I'll let him share his number with others in this league.
Any other issues, give me a shout and I'll see what I can do to help until he talks to you. He is about to get on a plane, but was going to call me back.

Ah good... he just didn't set me as DP then. No worries. Looks like TB either had his queue emptied, forgot to make it available, or else just wanted to see who you guys took before making this pick.
I'm off to bed and leaving a one-man queue. I tried to figure out who I'd take if TB takes my guy and there's not a clear answer to me... so if that happens I'll have to congratulate TB for reading my mind and figure out an alternate in the morning.

I almost took him too. It was between him or maybe a 2nd LB when I decided to just grab a QB before some wise guy decided to start the back-up QB run. We've had 11 bench players drafted already so it could have happened.

At home with the stomach flu, but my queue is set for the next couple of rounds.
I don't want to speed up the clock before the weekend, but I am leaning towards a 3(or 4) hour clock beginning Monday AM. Any objections or suggestions?

Yeah... don't ratchet it down too tight until/unless we start running behind or getting desperate to finish. I'd rather have a really tight clock in the last few rounds when things don't matter as much anyway.

To one and all,
Just a heads up. In the event that the draft gets back to me tonight (and I do not expect that it will), that'll be it as I'm leaving the office as I write this.
I've provided my brother I_A_C with my cellular number. However, to be able to process 20+ picks in a update from him just doesn't seem workable, nor does a queue at this time.
I'm writing this for a little later on this evening. If it gets back to me late, don't wait on me to pick 'cause it's not going to happen. I will be in early tomorrow morning however and will pick as soon as I can.

Thank you for whoever has been making the the moderator work and transferring the rationales from here to the proper spot. Lots of work and much appreciated. Did have one mistake as the person put the rationale for Vince Young also in the Cooley rationale. Obviously it makes no sense as it is. Thanks.

Just a heads up for those who find the AOL site usually a bit sluggish. Today it seems to be running quite well. I just added all the players to my team that I've drafted up to this point. I know Trip asked us to pick up our own players so if you get a few minutes today it would be great if every team could pick up who've they drafted so far.

FYI - His last pick was made by myself... so he hasn't actually had access to a computer/internet since early in the day. I've been checking in regularily, and letting him know about the progress (or lack thereof) by phone.
So no... I don't think he wants to make a queue because #1. He can get "really" caught up tomorrow morning, in front of a computer with whatever software he's using. #2. He probably doesn't want to ask me to do more than I've already been doing. #3. Should I have not been able to contact him for 10.12... he wouldn't have timed out till tomorrow morning anyways.
On top of everything else... he's following proper protocol, by letting you all know that there might be a "pause" from him. Personally, I think the draft would move much better if more managers would notify others when they are/aren't available.

It's about time to cut the time from 6 to 4 hours. That will speed it up. Especially since we're taking a break every night and Labor Day's 3 day weekend is coming up. I'd like to think this would be over by then.

What I have found is the longer your time limits are, the less people are motivated to actually check on things. Maybe it's subconscious. Thing is, with a 6 hour clock, the draft will invariably take longer. Things happen to us all and there is going to be a time when something happens that most of us can't get to the computer right away to take care of things in a timely fashion. Still 6 hours is just inviting problems, IMM. If we're not going to use it anyways and we should use a q to be fair to our fellow managers, then why not cut the clock down to a more respectable time from the get-go, especially after the early critcal round(s)?
I, personally, don't have an issue when someone has an oh-crap momemt or something comes up, but when it's the same person/people doing it, it starts to wear on people. I'm so caught up in G24 draft and baseball stuff that I haven't been too bothered by the delays except trying to figure out Qs and how many players I need to leave in there when it gets to me. Still want to get this thing done in plenty of time for the season. I'd like to actually start like next week and do a semi-fast draft, but I know that's not practical. At least we'd have a lot more news on what's happening with starting jobs!
