I thought to start a thread where anyone that has a question or wants to offer a tip about sandbox drafts could post.

I've got one to start with. Those of you in "slow live" drafts need to be aware there is a deadline for completion of the draft. According to Sandbox rules (paraphrased):

Your league will be forced into an Open-List draft and your draft card will be used to select your remaining players if your draft goes past the cut off date of Monday, September 3, 2001 at 11:00AM EST.

Bottom line is they'll finish it for you if you're not through by the cutoff date. Better to autopick now than to have them fill your team via "openlist" later.

Pay attention to your "Draft Card" open positions when using AUTODRAFT.

If you don't have an open slot on your draft card for the player you want to pick, then autodraft will ignore the players in the draft queue and make it's selection for an open slot on your draft card from the top of the master draft list.

You may think you're getting that great sleeper WR and Sandbox will pick you that 2nd kicker or a DL.

here is my tip:

if you didn't get one of the top 3 QB in the 1st round (culpepper, warner and manning), wait for the 4-5 round before you pick your QB. it's better to start with a couple of stud RB's then to take a mcnabb or garcia in the second round.

and another thing: don't pick defensive players before the really late rtounds. let somebody else make the mistake of picking ray lewis or warren sapp in the 3rd round.

Based on my experience I think the 12 team format is the best, assuming all managers participate. With 10 teams it is too easy to fill a team with all stud type players, reducibg the influence of sleepers, and 14 teams just spreads the talent too thin. This is just my opinion, however.

The biggest tip I can give is to adjust your draft for the type of league. If you are not playing strategy just load up on RB's and LB's. If you are playing strategy, if you want to finish first, it will be important to have some balance to your offense so you are not easily defended by 2 or 3 DL's. Similarly it is usually important to retain some defensive flexibility to stop unbalanced opponents. At 10% a clip DL's and DB's can significantly affect an unbalanced team's score.

This may seem like a "duh" statement, but I've seen it happen. Don't draft players that are injured when you draft them. Such as Jamal Lewis. A poor guy in my division did just that. I believe the same guy may have drafted Terrell Davis.

tduncan: Taking a defensive player early may not always be a mistake. I'm not saying focus all of your early rounds on defense, but it is still a key part of the game. Taking Lewis or Sapp in the third round wouldn't be a mistake, IMHO. Unless if someone obvious is left of course. A lot of things depend on the tone of the draft. Example: By the 3rd round a lot of stud WR and RB may be gone. What's wrong then with grabbing a top notch LB or DL?

because you can easily find other defenders that will put up good numbers.

the differnese between the defensive players is so small, that I don't think it's good to waste such early picks on defensive players.

The same could be said about offensive players when you say, "because you can easily find other defenders that will put up good numbers". By the third round people such as: James, Faulk, Moss and Harrison had better be gone. After those guys, the playing field gets relatively level. That's when you start having to take things like division and schedule into the mix.
Ray Lewis plays in a soft division and is one of the best linebackers in the league and is on the best defense. The defensive categories take up a good sum of the pie and shouldn't be overlooked. Obviously, offense is important, but I'd rather have a stud linebacker or DL than a slightly above average/middle of the road RB or WR. You are entitled to your opinion, but I feel its important that defense is not neglected.

allright, think about it this way:

in the rotoguru roughriders league, you pickd warren sapp in the 4th round, and I picked jevon kearse in the 13rd round.

kearse can easilly put up better numbers then sapp.

on the other hand, in the 4th round I picked eric moulds. can tou find me a reciever like eric moulds in the 13th round?

Ray Lewis 8.9FP/G
Eric Moulds 7.6/G

That's not to say I wouldn't take Moulds over Lewis. But I did make the mistake last year of not having enough good LB's. I did have Kearse and Sapp (I think different teams) but Kearse had a non-Freakish year and Sapp didn't do much for me either. Teams with the great D's consistently beat me, of course they had decent offenses as well. Receiver seems to be over-rated to me. Even Isaac Bruce, Randy Moss, etc can get totally shut out in a game. RB's and LB's are consistent point getters as are QB's.

I'd have to agree w/ Alex T. on this one. I think it's important to have a balanced team. Offensive Players make up 5 categories, Defense 4, and Kickers 1. There are proven dominant players on the Defensive side of the ball. T duncan, if you were able to get Kearse in the 13th round, I would say some of the other players in the division made the mistake of getting too many offensive players and didn't lock up the solid defensive players. Can you get good WR production similar to Moulds in the 13th round. I have a feeling JJ Stokes will have a banner year as the #2 in SF and I would guess he would have been taken rather late in just about any draft. Who will do better only the season will say. My thoughts though are to try and get some high quality in every position. My .02

I think everyone is overlooking the two most important criteria: fp/g and gap. If there is a big gap in the differential of fp/g at a certain position, you've gotta go for it. Of course you've always got to factor in injuries (JLewis), changing teams (CGarner), new role on team (MAnderson/Wheatley), last pick = kicker, defensive players from bad teams are on the field more often,etc...
