0 Subject: RIFC AAA #2 Draft Rationals (Rounds 1-6)

This thread will be for managers in the 2007 RotoGuru Invitational Football Challenge to provide the rationale for each pick. (copy/pasted from RIFC Thread)

Here are the ground rules:
1. Only managers in this league should post here. If you want to provide feedback (either from other league managers, or from those not in the league), put it in the discussion thread. (Non-conforming discussion in this thread will be deleted.)

2. Try to keep the pick rationales in the same order as the draft. We'll attempt to keep this thread 2 rounds behind the actual draft. With the lag, most comments should not have an impact on the draft in progress. However, if there are aspects of your pick that you feel need to be kept under wraps, feel free to protect that information. In particular, please avoid mentioning the names of any players who are still undrafted at that time of the post.

If possible, please post your (2 round lagged) comments at the time you make each pick. For example, you should post your comments for your round 1 pick when you make your round 3 selection. If you are not ready to post at that time, then create a "placeholder" so that the next person is able to go ahead in sequence. When your post is ready, simply post it in the draft discussion thread and a moderator can copy it over.

If your rationale is due and intervening placeholders have not been inserted, please insert them before posting your rationale.

3. Once the draft is over, each manager is also encouraged to provide a general draft recap, at which time you can discuss your overall strategy, mention any undisclosed factors, comment on what worked out well and what didn't, etc.

The general format should be:
1.01 Priest Holmes - RB, KC
Several sentences of rationale.

As part of your first round rationale, please comment on your selection of draft sequence.

1.01, Ladanian Tomlinson, RB, SD

With the opportunity to pick first, I was not going to pass up on it. First time that I have picked first.

As for the pick itself, it was not like last year, when you had 3 that would be a good choice. Last year, I picked 3rd, and got LT, and he was a monster. He helped me win my last 12 games, some single handedly. So with the opportunity to have him again, I jumped all over it.

Ah the dreaded 3rd pick of the 2007 fantasy draft. or is it? I know many people did not want the responsibility of pulling the trigger on this pick. I was all too happy. Johnson is a stud! even with a diminished O line I believe he will be the #2 RB at the end of this season.

1.04 Frank Gore, RB, SF
I was hoping as the draft order picking progressed that the 4 spot would fall to me. It didn't and then Building 7 wanted to trade down. I jumped at the first chance and after some debates we worked out the deal.

I wanted Gore at the spot. I knew if I didn't get him that I'd be happy with LJ but luckily Fugazi isn't scared by contract negotiations.

Gore is going to be getting more goal line carries and short yardage situations. I like this. He was huge last year and I think he is primed for more. The SF offense is going to be huge with some key additions. I like this young team and I like it will remain steadfast to a running game centered around my guy.

1.05 Brian Westbrook, RB, PHI

I took the fifth slot because I had RB ranked:

1 LT
2a S Jackson
2b Frank Gore
2c Brian Westbrook
2d Larry Johnson

I wanted to make sure I got one of them.

I think I'm going to have to rename my team to reflect all of the injury risks that I have. If I avoid them my team could do very, very well. If they occur (very likely) it's going to be a long season.

1.06 Joseph Addai, RB, IND

When i took the 6th spot, i was honestly hoping Addai would fall to this spot, and sure enough he did. i think he's going to finish the season as a top 3 back, up there with LT2 and Jackson.

my decision was convoluted a bit by Alexander falling as far as he did, but it was Alexander who killed my team last year with his injury, and i used the old fantasy adage of "If you were injured before and f*cked me, then f*ck you, play for some other sucker..."

which, of course, means, Alexander will rush for 3056 yards and 146 touchdowns this season.

seriously though, i just think Addai is going to be a total stud this season. i was very happy to draft him with this pick.

1.07 Shawn Alexander RB Sea

I thought for sure I would get Addai with this pick, which is why i took the 7 spot. I am excited though to get Alexander this late. I think he came back well from his injury and am expecting big things out of him this season. Possibly 1500 yards and 15 scores.

1.08- Rudi Johnson

I was a little disappointed here as I too had hoped for Addai or Westbrook. Failing in that I went for safety with Rudi- He has to beat LaMont Jordan who i took with this pick last year.

Fourth to choose draft position, I chose 1.09 and 2.05. I wanted to be near the mid to back end of the 1st round to hopefully get 2 #1 RB.
Willie Parker, RB, PITT
For my first pick, I was initially targeting Rudi Johnson, and Travis Henry in that order as our draft slowly got started. I left a 2 player queue of Parker and Rudi, figuring I’d get Rudi. I was quite surprised and very pleased to see that Parker fell to me. I had him projected as a top 5 RB. That’s the other reason I chose 9th. Just a hunch that someone might slip through. There’s a new coach in Pittsburgh, this season, and it looks like he may be spreading the field some with his wide outs. Give Fast Willie a little room to run and watch him fly. The guy is FAST, lightning quick, and a threat to score from anywhere on the field. Watching him run a screen is beautiful thing. He’ll be the 3rd down guy, plus he will get most if not all goal line chances. His backups are (undrafted) and (undrafted), so there’s no threat of a RBBC situation developing here. I project 325 to 375 touches this year with 1500 to 1800 yards from scrimmage, plus 12 to 15 TDs. A pretty sweet way to start my draft with the ninth overall pick.

1.10 Laurence Maroney, RB, NE

I had the 10th choice and somehow got the 4th slot. I wasn't sure who to pick, so I traded down to the 10th pick, and took who was left. Was hoping to get Rudi, but just missed. With Dillon gone, this dude should excel. Also looked at T. Henry and Manning.
I felt there was a dropoff after them.

0.11

When my turn was up, I had my choice of 4 or 10-14. I went with 11 because I felt that it would give me the best chance to pick up two quality RBs. I had Maroney targeted with the first pick. Now that a few rounds of the draft have passed, I feel that picking from the 4th slot might’ve been more advantageous.

1.11 Maurice Jones-Drew

I had been very confident pre-draft that I would get Laurence Maroney at this spot, as in no other draft that I looked at did he go higher than 11th. When he went at 10, I was forced to reconsider my situation. I narrowed my decision down to Bush, Jones-Drew, and McGahee. Bush and Jones-Drew are in very similar situations, an RBBC with some return yardage on top, so I made my decision based on their respective teams. I think Jacksonville will improve on last season, presenting more rushing situations, while New Orleans will probably match last year at best. Thus, my choice was made.

Grew up in St. Louis... Was sad to see Faulks career come to end... But imagine the excitement when we saw what this kid could do... Might not had the TD's last year, but definitely had the other numbers. Easy choice easy pick for me at #2

1.13 Travis Henry, RB, Den

I was hoping for Reggie Bush here, but Henry went prior to #13 in most drafts I've seen. I'm guessing that's more a compliment to Shanahan's system than Henry's career so far.
