7.03 Jon Kitna, QB, DET

Lions offensive co-ordinator Mike Martz is a mad scientist whose teams post stunning offensive numbers; 8 yrs in a row, his team has finished top five in passing yds and in passing completions.

IMHO, Kitna is a better fantasy QB than he is an NFL QB. Point in fact, he finished 6th in QB ranking last year with Roy Williams and [undrafted player] at WR. This offseason, the Lions decided to add the uber-talented Calvin Johnson in the NFL entry draft. If you are a believer that the Lions offense will be prolific, then would not Kitna be the beneficiary of his talented WR corps?

I decided to pull the trigger because I thought that Kitna was good (not exceptional) value who filled a hole. I also looked hard at Todd Heap (just before he was selected by Taxman, after he timed out) and Joey Galloway.

7.05 Darrell Jackson, WR, SF

I was looking for my 3rd WR in this spot and I'm happy with Darrell Jackson here. He'll be the #1 receiver at San Fran and hopefully will stay healthy.

That's the recurring theme in the NFL, if you can keep your players healthy and on the field, you have a chance of going somewhere in the league. If not, you're sunk. Only time will tell, but for a #3, I'm happy with Jackson here.

7.06 Vernon Davis, TE, SF

Davis is a physical specimen coming into his second year after being injured for most of 2006. When he did return at the end of the year he showed 49'ers fans what he could do. Cooley and Davis were the top tier remaining in the TE pile and with the rule changes this year, I wanted to make sure I got at least one above average performer at the slot. I decided on Davis despite Cooley's proven track record because I think the 49'ers will have a much better offense as a whole

Again a change in strategy from previous years when I picked a TE towards the end of the draft, almost punting this position. I'll see what happens.

7.09 Chris Cooley, TE, WAS

I wanted Cooley last round but was hoping he'd fall to me at this pick. But after a HUGE run on TEs, I was very lucky as guys who I had rated lower went and they left Cooley alone. With Campbell taking over in Wash, I think Cooley's numbers will even be better. Very glad to get him as I think there is a huge dropoff at TE now.

7.10 Mark Clayton, WR, BAL

I was set to grab Brian Urlacher here, but he just didn't make it back to me. I didn't feel like adding a 3rd RB, as I thought it was a tad too early to get a bench player. I felt pretty comfortable with the starters I had, so I decided to draft my 3rd WR. The Ravens have always been a running team, but I think Clayton will perform well depsite that. Besides, they don't have anyone else to throw the ball to, so he should get plenty of looks. I also considered Joey Galloway here, but I was worried about his age. Though I'm sure Galloway will have another great season and surprise me again.

7.11 – Phillip Rivers - I finally felt like QBs were top value on the board. Definitely a few WRs I considered, but there’s so enough depth at that position that I see no crisis to need to grab my 3rd just yet. But with the distinct possibility of 2 QBs coming off around the turn I decided I’d better stop waiting and take the guy I wanted.

Rivers is only going to get better this year with more experience under his belt. LT keeps teams from focusing on the passing game too much, and he’s got some great targets in Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson (and LT out of the backfield). Even the WR2/3 guys Undrafted Player and Undrafted Player are looking good this preseason. Should be a high-powered offense.

Round 7 Analysis - A-ha, finally the mini-TE run I was expecting! That makes me happy ‘cus now I definitely feel like I took the right player by drafting Shockey last round. Santonio Holmes has the potential to be a steal this round… IF he’s returning punts/kicks again this year. If not, he should still be a decent value here. I liked that pick a lot.

7.12 Zach Thomas, LB, MIA

At this point I have a couple top WRs, a great defense, some starting RBs and no TE, no QB, and no IDP. Not much I can do about my RB game. QB's could probably wait another 5 rounds seeing how there are still 9 available I'd feel the same about if they were starting for me (hah, drafted one the next round). I almost took a TE last round and probably would have taken Heap in this spot had he made it back to me, but nobody else makes me want to jump for joy at their 5 points a game average. I think it's time to look at the top IDP scorers. Zach is almost 80 years old, but he still drinks tackling fuel. I'm happy with this pick.

7.14 Joey Galloway WR TAM

Thought I better get another WR. Really looked at going with back to back QBs here and taking both Leinart and Cutler but hoped I could get one of the QBs I had targeted later. WR always gets thin during the year and with bye weeks to cover I don't think 4 is too many to have.

8.01 Randy McMichael TE STL

Had a tough time with this pick. Lots of ways I could have gone but figured I better grab a TE now or I would regret it. Not thrilled with McMichael but he is a Ram now and I can at least root for him to put up big numbers like he had before and maybe with the new coach here and a decent TE he will become a badly needed Red Zone target.

8.02 Terry Glenn, WR, DAL

Glenn has been hurt all preseason and so he fell to me at this pick. He was Romo's deep threat last year and I don't see that changing this year. He still has his world class speed. I think he'll be a solid number 3 WR for me.

8.03 Matt Lienart, QB, ARI

I don't know what's up with me this year, but in years past I always wanted about 10 players every pick. This year, three players came off the board after I picked Matt and before I picked again that I wouldn't mind having on my team. McGee, who I forgot about in this format. Ray Lewis who is a tackling machine, but is getting long in the tooth. Warrick Dunn, who I was hoping everyone forgot about and thought I could a little later. I really thought another injured RB would go a round or two before him and even toyed with the idea of grabbing another RB, but passed. I like Leinart and think he could do something special this year. He has some great offensive weapons and could be poised for a huge season. I expect him to do as well or better than several QBs who were picked before him and he's another player I enjoy rooting for.

8.04 Vincent Jackson, WR, SD

He was my last one on the current tier of WRs, happy to get him here and wrap up my 3 WR starters. I noticed several teams still needed WR badly, and didn’t feel like this was in any way a reach… whereas in a couple more rounds I might start needing to reach as those other teams drafted the remaining talent. There were a couple of RBs I considered here… Chris Brown (but his bye week conflicts with my RBs and I just don’t like him, he’s injury prone) and Kevin Jones (who I actually considered at 7.11 but could keep slipping… but I'm surprised because I think he might get his starting job back by mid-season). I also considered grabbing Adrian Wilson, the top DB… but felt the dropoff at WR was too steep to pass up.

Round 8 Analysis - I finally started to feel like there were a few reaches this round, which is nice ‘cus it means guys I like might fall through to me. So far I feel like I’ve had really good timing on this draft in terms how things have played out… so far there’s not been a single pick that I regret.

8.05 Matt Hasselbeck, QB, SEA

I was really glad to get a solid QB in Hasselbeck this year. Last season, I wound up putting too much confidence in my sleeper QB and it haunted me all season. My #1 QB ended up missing most of the season due to injury. My #2 drafted QB only made 1 start before spending the rest of the season as a backup. Then I picked up a FA who missed half the season with a bad concussion. In between all that, I probably threw in a few starts from my Raiders QBs. Sure I got Tony Romo later, but the damage was already done.

Hopefully, I won't have any QB problems like that this year!

Well with no sure-fire WRs in range I felt it was time to go IDP. Depending on where you look, there are some LBs ranked higher than Peterson still, but I think he will have a lot more upside than given credit. He was injured last year and seems to be better than ever now. Even though he's 31 I think he has big upside.

I would be happy with White as a 4th RB... not as a 3rd. Since my 2 starting RB have late BYE weeks, i expect White to be out of that RBBC situation and clear #1. If not he should at least handle the red zone situation.

I was past due to grab my 3rd RB here especially considering that DeAngelo Williams probably won't be starting for the first few weeks of the system. Here's hoping that Taylor takes the bulk of the workload behind a stud OL in Minnesota at least until Williams has full time duties in Carolina. This is probably my favorite pick so far in the draft considering Taylor's impressive preseason.

8.10 Jason Witten, TE, DAL

When the run on TE really began in the 7th round, I began to get nervous that I didn't take Jason when I had the chance. I knew Cards was kind of a Cowboys fan and when he passed his double pick I breathed a sigh of relief because most of the teams already had TE picking between us.

The Cowboys have implemented a "new" offense this year which will resemble more of what was run when Troy Aikman was here. That makes sense as the OC, Jason Garrett, learned the offense carring the clipboard as the backup behind Troy for 7 years. Tutored by Norv Turner and the Guru himself, Ernie Zampese, who learned the air attack from the Offensive "Genius" himself, Don Coryell, who takes his queues going all the way back to Paul Brown, this really is an old offense that's new again. It's amazing how that happens.

In other words. Look for a more TE based attack similar to how Troy used Jay Novachek. Fun for Witten if it works out that way. Test

Pierce is one of the sure bets at linebacker; one of the most consistent IDP options in the NFL. It was time for me to draft a LB, and Pierce was in my top top tier of LBs (I have him projected to finish top 5.).

Last year, he posted over 100 solo tackles. He drops back well in coverage. And the Giants defensive scheme also allows him to make the odd big play, all the while funnelling the play to him to make the tackle.

All in all, I saw little risk in drafting who will become the anchor of my IDP squad - Pierce - at 8.12.

9.03 Ben Roethlisberger, QB, PIT

One could argue that everything went wrong last year for Big Ben. Yet, he still managed to finish as the 10th best fantasy quarterback in 2006.

Surrounded by good talent on the offensive side of the ball (Willie Parker, Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, etc.), many expect the Steelers to score a lot of points this season with new offensive coordinator Bruce Arians' spread offense. Roethlisberger's also looked pretty good this offseason.

I was among the bottom half of those who punted QBs for a while. As I felt Roethlisberger had dropped far enough, I decided to draft my second QB quicker than most.

9.05 Devery Henderson, WR, NO

I decided to go with a 4th WR at this point as Devery seemed the logical choice and in a league that starts 3, you have to at least have 4 to cover the bye weeks at a minimum. Devery should start for NO barring injury and has the speed to give trouble for DBs this year in single coverage. As a 4th WR choice, I'm pleased with the choice and will concentrate on some defense later in the draft.

Brown's relationship with the Titans has been better as of late and he goes into the season sharing duties with LenDale White who has been battling injuries so far this preseason. In the 9th round this is about as good as you can expect at the RB position. With Brown and Taylor now in camp, I'm a lot more comfortable with my decision not to draft a RB in the first two rounds.

9.11 Adrian Wilson, DB, ARI

The top DB in fantasy football in my opinion (and many agree)… puts up nearly elite LB #s from a DB slot. Not bad for 9th round. He gets most of his points from tackles, which tend to be a bit more consistent than things like PDs, sacks, INTs, and return yards. I haven’t drafted a single “backup” player at any position nor a flex single IDP as of yet… which is nice because that gives me the flexibility to focus on “best player available” in the rounds ahead rather than scrambling to fill needs. I think I’ll start doing that with my next pick… I’m really hoping Kevin Jones makes it back to me. I considered him back at the round 7/8 turn and am really surprised to see him still available. The 3 guys around the turn here all have 3 RBs already… so it’ll be nice if they look another direction and he slides a few more picks. Or I might take a 2nd QB.

T Round 9 Analysis - 50% of the picks this round were IDPs. I expect this trend to continue for at least the next round or two. Fortunately I already have two studs at this point, which puts me ahead of the game.

Top ten DB from last season who I believe has room to improve. In two seasons as a starter has averaged just over 100 tackles for both seasons. Had 5 sacks, 9 PD, and 4 int's last year as well. After making my last pick, I set up a short queue for my next pick that looked like this: Ben Watson, Kirk Morrison, Isaac Bruce, Kevin Jones, Jerry Porter, and Chris Hope. Then I went downstairs and watched the movie 300 again with my son. Picking a TE just didn't make me feel like a Spartan. I wanted a warrior. A warrior from my favorite team. Kirk is a tackling machine on a very good defense.

10.04 - Kevin Jones - Sweet. I almost took him at 7.11, waited, still got him at 10.04. There’s not many RBs left on the board in round 10 who have the potential to put up top-10 RB numbers. :) Admittedly, Tatum Bell figures to start week 1, and I do like Tatum. But Jones is the real deal too, and I can’t see him just sitting on the sideline all season. Frankly, I wouldn’t mind if they put Jones on the PUP and had him sit out the first 5 games (week 6 is a bye anyway)… I’d rather him come back 100% healthy later on and really establish himself. I think worst case it’ll become a RBBC by mid-season, and so KJ will at least get some moderate points to help me out if one of my starters gets nicked up. But the upside is that he gets his job back and performs at an elite level, and for the 10th round with no backup RBs on my squad yet… umm, yeah. I’ll take it.

Round 10 Analysis - Holy LBs Batman! Not quite 50% IDPs as I’d expected, but probably because 3 D/STs went as well. I wouldn’t be real excited about Muhsin as my #2 WR. *gulp* I was half expecting StlCards to take the 2 QBs he did at the turn… if he hadn’t I might have even considered one of them over Kevin Jones.

Wow, it's nice to get a LB of this quality at this point in the draft. Had I known I would get Donnie Edwards in this round, I probably would have passed on Tatupu in the round before. My IDPs look pretty solid now with 3 great LBs (Bulluck, Tatupu and Edwards) and Polamalu as my DB. My only concern with Edwards is that he'll have to adjust to a new team. At least he'll still be in the AFC west, so he'll be familiar with the opposing offenses.

10.12 Steelers, DEF, PIT

The Steelers finished last season as the 12th ranked fantasy defense, allowing a little less than 20 points/g (11th), 88 rush yds/g (3rd) and 212 pass yds/g (20th). The defense also recorded 39 sacks and 27 takeaways. Returning from last year's starting defensive unit is everybody but one. And the organization spent 4 picks in the first 5 rounds of the 2007 NFL entry draft on defense, infusing young talent.

With Dick LeBeau at the helm as the defensive co-ordinator, they'll be agressive. Add to that, a defensive-minded headcoach; HC Mike Timlin is a former defensive co-ordinator himself. It has also been rumoured that the Steelers are modifying their defense to a form of the cover-2, which should improve the passing-defense statistics. All of this sounds promising!

IMO, the Steelers are a second tier defense with top 5 upside, making this a safe pick.

11.03 Ernie Sims, LB, DET

I usually try to draft linebackers that post solid tackle numbers, as I do not trust the point swings that occur with players that live and die for the big play. Sims fits my usual profile: in his rookie year last year, he posted 125 tackles (82 solos).

While at Florida State, Sims had a history of concussions. That said, he did not sustain any last year. In his second year in the NFL, I expect a healthy Sims to post even better numbers than he did last year; solid but unspectacular.

11.05 Chris Hope, DB, TENN

I wanted to take a strong (no pun intended) SS at this time because in a tackles league, they're the next best thing to a MLB. Plus they get PD as well. I like Chris for the fact that he's going to get a lot of chances to make tackles at TENN. That happens when you've got a volatile offense which may have a lot of 3 n outs and a porous D-line. These add up to a lot of time on the field for the defense. Lots of Hope for me. ;)

11.06 Eagles Defense, DEF, PHI

I had planned on drafting the Miami defense at this slot as they had lasted past this point in the other RIFC leagues. I was disappointed to see them disappear 6 picks earlier but had the Eagles, Jaguars and Panthers well above the remaining D's and didn't want to miss out on one of them here.

I had planned on taking a DB with this pick and had targeted Chris Hope. DS beat me to him , and Barber was next on my list.

11.08 Champ Bailey, DB, DEN

I know how frustrating it is to have such a good CB. I've had him before. QB are affraid of him and don't throw in his direction... I still drafted Bailey for the few times they actually do throw his way. He will still manage to post top 5 DB #. I don't expect 10 INT... just steady #.

11.09 Jacksonville Jaguars, DEF, JAX

I needed a DST. Last year I waited until the end as I kpt seeing teams in the teir falling. Then they'd get picked up every time I got ready to take one. Here I had a chance to get a great DST and felt waiting may lead to the same situation as last year. There were other positions I looked at, but this squad will be starting for me every week and the other options doing that wouldn't ut up near the points.

11.10 Troy Polamalu, DB, PIT

I don't think I've been in a league yet where there were IDP positions and I didn't draft this guy. So far he hasn't let me down. I expect him to perform like a top 10 DB again. (Technically, he wasn't in the top 10 last year, but he probably would have been had h e not missed 3 games.)

11.12 Jerry Porter, WR, Oak

We are only at pick 10.11, but I like what I've seen so far. Kevin Jones has been drafted so I regret that a little, but five 5 LB and a WR that wasn't on my radar outside of keeper leagues have been taken. I hope to see another 8-9 IDP taken along with a couple tight ends and a couple team D's before it comes back down. I think I've resigned myself to waiting on TE, DL, and kicker until after every other starter and a few back up spots have been filled. If Ben Watson or Chris Hope make it back to me it will probably be hard to pass them up, but there are lots of options at TE and DB so hopefully I will go WR-WR. Best case would be Bruce and Porter with these next two picks.

Updated: Since my pick, Hope is gone and so is Bruce, but Watson is still around. I think I will grab him on the return. 13 IDP and 4 team defenses were drafted and that's nice. Time to take Porter. Midway through my second paragraph and I haven't even talked about why I wanted Porter. Porter can opt out of his contract after this season. He is saying and doing all the right things this year, but he is also playing for a payday. Word out of camp is that he's catching everything thrown at him. He's always had talent but lacked motivation. I think he's happy and motivated this year and am hoping with an improved Raider's offense this turns out to be a great pick.

11.13 Julius Peppers DL CAR

I wanted to go DL here. Peppers is number 1 on my list. He's arguably the most athletic defensive linemen and you have to love what he brings to the field every Sunday. Easy choice for me.

11.14 Minnesota Vikings DEF MIN

I was debating on Vilma here and figured he wouldn't make it back to me. Also figured that the Vikings Def may not make it back either. Had to make a choice as to who I wanted more. I figured there were a handful of D's left I could take and be happy with, but more options at LB so I took the Vikings D. Hopefully the offense can stay on the field a bit this year to give them a break.

12.01 Jesse Chatman RB MIA
Again the decision was Vilma or Chatman. Don't trust Ronnie Brown all that much so having Chatman as a handcuff was important to me. Chatman may also get some of the goal line carries. Brown is also supposed to run kicks back so injury concerns go up, so I went with Chatman here.

12.02 Jonathan Vilma LB NYJ

I'm biased towards Vilma going back to his days at the U. He had a sensational rookie year, but has struggled adjusting to Mangini's 3-4 defense. I expect him to make the adjustment and post a much better 2nd year under Mangini.

12.03 Ben Watson, TE, NE

I really hate wasting a pick on TE. I know I need one, but there are always a dozen players I would rather have instead of a TE. It's like drafting a kicker. You have to have one, but it doesn't mean it felt good making the pick. The good news is that if I had to draft a TE in the 8th round, I would have chosen Watson over the three picked so I did get to wait a few more rounds and get the guy I had ranked top 10 for the position. I think he can improve upon his 49 catches, 643 yards, and 3 TD's from last season. With the offensive weapons NE added this year, Watson should get more opportunites to make plays.

There were only 2 defenses left that I wanted as my #1 D (Car and Den) and 3 teams w/o DEF picking twice each before my next pick... figured I better nab one.

12.05 Vernand Morency, RB, GB

I'm not sold on Brandon Jackson being the main RB in GB just yet. So I'll take a chance on Morency here. Besides, I only had 2 RBs up to this point so it was time to add some depth in case something goes wrong with Rudi Johnson or Ahman Green.

12.06 Nick Barnett, LB, GB

I couldn't find any real value picks w/o having to reach so I looked to IDPs and felt this was the best player on the board. Had him last year and he's the typical IDP--very up and down. But the ups are very attractive. He has some guys around him who are getting better. Hawk steals some tackles, etc. but I think together each of them continue to improve. He's still young and has plenty of upside.

12.07 Heath Miller, TE, PIT

I have no doubt i did reach on this pick, and i don't care. He was the TE i targeted before the draft and i didn't want to let him slip. There is no point in waiting to be 2nd last to get a TE and letting go the one you targeted. Miller is high reward TE (also *undrafted* and *undrafted* could be consider high reward and i will probably try to get one to back up Miller).

With all the good signs from Pittsburgh (new OC, healthy Big Ben, way easier schedule) i expect Miller to increase his 2005 #. 500 yds 6 TD is minimum. 600 yds 7 TD is realistic.

12.08 J.P. Losman, QB, BUF

I had not planned on taking a backup QB this early in the draft, but I thought that Losman was too much of a value to pass up. Had I thought that Losman would be available this late in the draft, I would not have picked Bugler in the third round.

12.09 Dwight Freeney, DL, IND

I had targeted Jason Taylor in the 9th or 10th round this year and was surprised to see him go in the 6th. I had Taylor alone in the "A" tier at the position and Freeney, Peppers and XXX in my "B" tier. The only other option I considered here besides DL was the Carolina Def and wish I had gone that way as they disappeared with the next pick and one of my DL options is still available.

12.10 Carolina Panthers, Def, CAR

I was watching several of the top rated defenses roll off and decided to go with Carolina at this point rather than take a IDP. Barring the injury bug to certain members of their DL which I won't mention, I expect Carolina to improve on last year and stiffen against the run. The retirement of Minter will hurt some in the overall management of the secondary, but he was somewhat of a liability in overall team speed and a new person at SS will help there.

Again, fewer injuries and improved team speeds will determine how well the defense does in the long run.

12.12 Ronald Curry, WR, OAK

Over the final 4 weeks of the season, a healthy Ronald Curry led all NFL WRs in receptions. In addition, I watched the Raidahs preseason game versus St. Louis and Curry seemed to be the primary target, no matter which QB was taking snaps. Needing a third WR, I considered the former North Carolina point guard and QB a no brainer at 12.12.
