Complete Draft

RIFC AAA #2 Managers - You are each invited (although not required) to post your general reflections on the completed draft. Comments may be as detailed or as general as you wish. As a catalyst, free free to comment on any of the following:

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Non-managers are also welcome to post general comments on the draft, and to raise questions.

What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
My goal was to go RB, RB, then WR, WR, QB, like I always have in the last 3 years. I chose the 9th draft slot to get a top 10 RB in round 1 and a decent RB on the way back in round 2. I was immediately pleased to see Willie Parker (top 6 in my rankings) drop to me at 1.09. At 2.06, I thought I’d make my pick that Friday evening, but we had an unanticipated delay for 48 hours. That turned out to be the longest 2 days of my life. As we turned that first corner, I immediately noted that Peyton Manning had not yet been picked. I had him going late in round one, but the onslaught of RBs continued through to 2.04, where the first non RB was picked, Marvin Harrison. So here I am on the verge of picking Peyton Manning in the second round, but I had to wait 2 full days to see if I would get him. During the wait, I finally decided that if indeed Peyton did get picked ahead of me, I would choose Carson Palmer at 2.06 and deviate from my plan, as Clinton Portis was the next RB on my list and I’m still mad at him for being the main reason for my poor showing, last year.
So here I am, Sunday evening, draft stalled, Peyton Manning and Carson Palmer sitting in my queue. I walked away from my computer to enjoy a pleasant Sunday dinner with my family. When I returned, about an hour later, I checked the Kafenatid draft site for seemingly the one hundredth time that weekend, and low and behold, the name “Peyton Manning” was sitting in the box that was my turn. I couldn’t believe it. I figured after waiting all weekend for Kyle to pick, he would surely take him. But no, he took Portis and Manning was mine.
I further deviated from my plan when I saw the Raven’s D get picked at 4.11 and the Pat’s D get picked just ahead of me at 5.08. It was an easy choice to nab the Bear’s D with my 5.09 pick.
All this left me a little short on RB talent, but to compensate, I drafted 5 total RB, most who I felt were and are good value picks. After drafting Portis last year and dealing with the disaster that was his season, I’ve adopted a policy that you can never have too many RB in a league as deep and knowledgeable as this one.
So, no, I was not able to execute my original plan, but I couldn’t be happier about it.

What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?
Obviously the Manning and Bears D, along with Willie Parker were my early favorites. My first IDP, in round 7, Zach Thomas and Omar Gather in the 15th were pretty nice. The Eagles release of Jeremiah Trotter, opened the starting MLB job for Gaither, occurred during the draft and I grabbed him with my next pick.
Do overs. I thought that the pick of Michael Turner was a good one until he was injured a day or 2 later. Not sure if it will impact him at the start of the season, but it surely scared me as I chose another 2 RB after him.

Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
A lot of pretty good looking teams, but all with a weakness or two (including mine). I particularly like the following teams: Electroman, promise, fugazi, who snarfed at least 4 guys from the top of my queue, Frick, Tree, TD, and PV all look pretty good to me, but time will tell how things pan out.
As we all know, drafting is only part of what constitutes a successful fantasy football season. It also takes management skills, WW pickups to cover weaknesses and injuries, and a lot of luck to complete a championship season. With the relatively short session, the cream does not always get a chance to rise to the top, so a strong start is imperative.

What surprised you most about the draft?
Two things. By the time managers have made it to the AAA level, they should be more comfortable using the queue system in Kafenatid. Some people used it, but others did not. Now I can see wanting to see how things develop early on, but it seems to me that some people just have this need to savor every single pick, right up to the end, and either refuse to leave a queue or are just too lazy or unprepared to use one. I know that everyone has a goal to qualify for the RIFC. My goal is to qualify just to have the pleasure of experiencing a BS free draft. Every year, I hesitate a moment before signing up for one of the RotoGuru Invitational qualifying leagues, because I know that there is going to definitely be some degree of drama. And I hate drama in fantasy sports. It’s supposed to be fun, not dramatic.
The second one has me confused a bit. After the huge rush to draft RBs early, there are a couple of teams that only drafted three. Granted, if all goes well, that’s all you need. But one ill timed injury could be devastating. I learned my lesson, last year. The WW is a great place to mine almost any position other than RB. Sure last year, a Ladell Betts was to be had, but that’s only one guy. In fantasy football, almost all leagues are RB weighted leagues. The RIFC surely is. Not that I really care that much. I might have an extra RB to trade, but he won’t come cheap.

If you could start over, would you do anything differently?
Absolutely nothing. This is by far the best team I’ve ever drafted in this format, at least on paper. I did a lot more prep work this year and maybe a half a dozen mock drafts. Now as long as I don’t get killed by injuries (again) and don’t mismanage my team, I expect to have a good season. Regardless, I know I’ll have a good time.

One last thing Despite a few bumps in the road, we finished this draft on time. Something I had great doubts about early on. Good job to everyone in the league.

While I don't completely agree with the DD results I do agree that my team wasn't that well drafted. I made a couple of picks on the fly without my cheatsheets and it caused me to make some very, very bad picks. The ones that stand out the most are Chad Greenway and Brady Quinn. With Greenway I was thinking of Morlon Greenwood. With Quinn I realized that I didn't have have a back-up QB and again didn't have my cheatsheets with me, I just saw a brief highlight that Quinn looked good in a pre-season game and thought he might have a chance to get the starter's role by the time McNabb was injured.

Wait, did I saw McNabb was injured? My team is loaded with guys with a history of injuries.

As far as DD, I used it for a couple of years, but while it is a very, very valuable tool in drafting I think their projections are weak. I found a source that I feel is significantly better, and unusual in their approach compared to most sources. On their projections Larry Johnson was the 8th best back and Shaun Alexander was in the low 20's mid 30's. Very different from most sources, but they worked well for me last year.

I'll add more tomorrow

Yah, I don't always agree with it either Frick, just enjoy posting it each year and see how close it comes... In another league last year, I must say it was very accurate considering it is just a prediction program.

Judy, if I had time I would plug them in for you, but holiday weekend and going to the Georgia game :)

Draft Dominator is the name of the program, can't remember if it has a intro period or not to try it out.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

My only strategy this year was to first draft RB,RB,WR,WR,WR and try not to pay attention to bye weeks. in the past I have chosen lesser players over better ones due to bye week issues. I realize that I will probably have to do some trading to make this work, but hopefully it will pan out.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

my favorite picks are LJ at 1.03 and Torry Holt at 3.03 I feel like I stole Holt there. my least fav pick is Warrick Dunn at 7.03 I might have been able to do better there.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

There are a lot of good teams, but I like mjd's and electromans the best. electroman may have trouble with his 2nd RB, but LT does the job of 2 RB'S. MJD might be a little thin in the WR dept but the rest of his team looks very solid.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

That Manning made it to the 2nd round. I have seen Payton go as early as 1.04 in some drafts.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

I wish I would have drafted Adrian Peterson MN. I think he is one of the most talented running backs I have ever seen. he should have a great year.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

To be honest, playing in this league last few years I just wanted to have a better draft pick then I had in the past. Low and behold I did. I tried to take what I thought was the strongest player on the board at the time. Didn't matter what position...

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

Brees / Kitna combo? Wow, talking about the possibility of some fire power... Could be some big numbers coming out of the QB slot for me.

Do overs? Ugh, looking at my RB other then Jackson, not exactly happy.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Wow, look at Trees team...

Two pretty good QB's
Addai, Jordan, Barber could be a good RB trio
CJ, Evans, Crotchery very nice trio at WR
Possibly might hurt a bit on his IDPs though... Can make some big points off IDPs I learned last year in this league.

Wiggs, MJD have solid teams as well.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Without this being a keeper league, the number of players that were not on any cheat sheets. Favorites of their local teams I suppose?

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Well, I wish I could actually be home to draft most the time... Unfortunately, my work makes that impossible. :)

Last year I made it to the championsip game in this league after barely making the playoffs.
1. My plan this year was to repeat my #3 draft position of last year. So, ending up #13 threw my entire strategy out the window.
It's impossible to know if Travis Henry and Ronnie Brown will be top running backs, not to mention rookie Brandon Jackson. I may have serious running back issues.

2. My favorite picks were Anquan Boldin/Andre Johnson as #3 and 4. I look for Hackett to be a solid #3WR. I like the Chargers D as well.
Cecil Sapp was way down on my que and should never been picked as high as #13. That's what you get for trying to keep the draft moving sometimes.

3. I agree that Tree's team looks very good, especially given that he had internet issues and a typically combative political league draft simultaneously.

4. I'm suprised that people ignore the que management system.

5. If I could start over again, I would have never taken that first crack hit.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
Drafting in the middle (8) I had planned on going RB/RB starting with a quality RB. I was disappointed when neither Westbrook nor Addai dropped to me but I guess my correlative benefit was when Palmer dropped to me with pick 21. From there with the exception of Norwood as my 3rd pick my course was directed by the flow of the draft-I did more subordinate WR's to defensive picks

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?
My favorite pick was Palmer #2 and Moulds #22
Norwood, was my least favorite esp since he subsequently lost his starting job LOL- sure would rather have Lee Evans. Can't say I'd like to do it over though because I never did it in the first place LOL
I am also concerned about Peterson with my third pick- although he may turn out fine he is far too important to my season for my comfort.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
Rotowire projector likes Promise, Wiggs and Kyle and my team and doesn't like Tree and MJD of the top projections above. Who knows I haven't really had a chance to look over the competition yet.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
The persistence of the run on RB's- the fact that both Manning and Palmer lasted to 20/21

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?
No offense guys but I would have picked AAA#1
as it had a lot fewer start-up problems and draft delays. I also wish I had not had a queue (albeit inactive) for my #4 pick.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I knew that I was going to get LT, and picking first, most of the top notch RB's were going to be gone by the time I picked again, so I was looking for a WR, QB combo, or two WR's. I took the latter. Also, I liked last year that I had Palmer/Johnson, so I was looking for a similar duo. I hope that I got that in Brady/Moss. And I knew that my second RB was going to be in a tandem role on his team. I got the guy I wanted with Williams, who I think has a chance of getting the job on his own during the course of the year. All in all, the early draft worked out the way I wanted.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

LT and TO. Two guys with noses for the end zone. My do over would be pick 9, Takeo Spikes. One of the set backs of drafting by queue is the errors. But, I don't think it will be a major setback.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Valkyrie and MJD got two first round picks each, getting Palmer and Manning to fall to them. Tree and Promize have nice teams also. But, everyone drafted well. Should be a competitive league. And I'm not just saying that to be nice.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

That we finished when we did. Good job everyone on pulling it off. Also, what has been pointed out, that Palmer and Manning stayed on the board longer than expected. Some people may regret passing over these guys.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Pick #9, but that is no big deal. Everything else went well.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I was hoping to get an early draft slot so I could get some good players in rounds 2&3. I was hoping to get a few good receivers this year. I did not. I wanted a top defense. I got one, but paid for it. I was hoping to get a good kicker around round 20...that worked. I had some sleepers I wanted....mixed results. I was hoping to get a decent QB with the 3rd round pick I got for trading down in the 1st. This may have worked, as I got Bulger.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

Gates 3.04, Tatum Bell 6.11, D. Hall 23.04

Do over....my 2nd round pick was tough. I took C. Williams TB , but he has the same bye week as Maroney. TO or the Giants RB may turn out better.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Whoever got Tomlinson.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

That P. Manning lasted so long. There was a huge, long run on LB's in the 8th round or so. I missed out. That we finished early.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

If I had accepted another trade from Kyle, I could have taken Manning in the 2nd round and had another 2nd round pick, 2 3rd round picks, and some other stuff. No 1st round picks, though. If I had known Manning would have been available there, I would have done it.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I allways have the same strategy take the best availble taking those skipped over by otheres and drafting 14th ment that was all i had to choose from.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

i guess getting rivers was my favorite pick, my first 2 picks they have disaster written all over them.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Promize and PV

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

how some starting RBs really fall in drafts while some back ups get drafteed really early. i guess it never knew but it allways surprises me.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

not sure this is one of the better drafts for me this year. i probably should have done a little better IDP research maybe draft a kicker, nah...

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

My plan entering the draft was to start RB-RB and draft based on value after that. Last year, I had started RB-WR-WR-RB-TE-QB-RB, and my RB depth was almost nonexistent the entire year (drafting LaMont Jordan didn’t help). I wanted to get a solid TE that I felt comfortable with, and I was hoping to get McNabb in the 4th round. For IDPs, I wanted to grab a stud or two and then fill out the rest of the slots with players having large upsides.

I chose the 11th pick in the draft with this in mind, but when the first 19 picks of the draft were all RBs, I felt the value had shifted elsewhere, and I ended up almost exactly following the same draft pattern as last year through seven rounds. I got the TE, and despite failing to get McNabb (since Frick used the same projections as I), I am very happy with Young. Overall, I feel weak at RB and strong elsewhere.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

My favorite picks are probably Vince Young at 5.11 and my set of IDPs, particularly the late ones. I had strongly considered Young in the 4th and even 3rd rounds, and was delighted to see him drop to me in the 5th, especially since it was the latest he went in the RIFC drafts. His rushing yardage gives him the potential to be a truly elite fantasy QB. Most of my IDPs are either proven performers over numerous years or very young players taking over for high-performing fantasy players (i.e., Posluszny for Fletcher-Baker and Keiaho for June). Hopefully, most of them will pan out.

As for picks I would like to do over, those would be the two guys who already lost their jobs, Byron Leftwich and Mike Bell. I really liked my pick of Leftwich until Jack Del Rio stupidly decided to make the switch to Garrard. When I picked Mike Bell, I was hoping for the Shanahan switching to work in my favor at some point during the season, with Bell taking back the lead role from Henry. Oh well.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

I like TD’s team. Two respectable QBs, 3 RBs that will put up points every week, a respectable receiving corps, and a few standout IDPs. Frick’s team also looks like a top group as long as his IDPs perform at a solid level. I especially like his outstanding RB depth.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Peyton dropping into the mid-2nd round. A few years ago, I resigned myself to the fact that I would never get to have him on a fantasy team of mine because of the depth of value I perceive at QB, and I actually had to strongly consider drafting him. I don’t expect that to ever happen again.

Also, I know the RIFC drafts are extremely RB-heavy, but I feel that this draft pushed it to the limit with the emphasis on RB. It will probably be a long time before I am in another draft where RBs have so much perceived value.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Though I’m generally happy with my draft, I would choose the 4th spot of the draft and grab Frank Gore there as a rock upon which to draft my team.
