0 Subject: RIFC #AA2 Draft Rationals #1

Posted by: wolfer
- [207522420] Mon, Aug 24, 2009, 22:24

Please post all rationales in this thread.

Here are the basic ground rules.....

1. Only managers in this league should post here. If you want to provide feedback (either from other league managers, or from those not in the league), put it in the discussion thread. (Non-conforming discussion in this thread will be deleted.)

2.We'll attempt to keep this thread 2 rounds behind the actual draft. With the lag, most comments should not have an impact on the draft in progress. However, if there are aspects of your pick that you feel need to be kept under wraps, feel free to protect that information. In particular, please avoid mentioning the names of any players who are still undrafted at that time of the post.

If possible, please post your (2 round lagged) comments at the time you make each pick. For example, you should post your comments for your round 1 pick when you make your round 3 selection. When your post is ready, simply post it here in any order.

3. Once the draft is over, each manager is also encouraged to provide a general draft recap, at which time you can discuss your overall strategy, mention any undisclosed factors, comment on what worked out well and what didn't, etc.

0.03 – position 7

My preferences this year were to draft first, first, and first. When that wasn't possible, I decided to go for a middle slot to minimize the chances of missing out on position runs. Even though my next tier only went 4 deep after Adrian Peterson, I felt confident that 1 of them would fall to 7 as a couple of guys I'm not as high on have been going top 5 in most drafts I've seen.

1.07 – LaDainian Tomlinson, RB, SD

After reviewing the other RIFC leagues, I had happily penciled in Steven Jackson in this spot. So, I was a bit surprised when he went fifth, and I got concerned as I only had one person left in my top 5. I was relieved when LDT slipped to me.

About every other year, I talk about how you can't win a league in the first round, but you can lose it. Frankly, this year just about everybody outside the top 1 has an easily identifiable risk. For Tomlinson, it's trying to bounce back when a lot of folks are writing him off as over the hill. Even though he disappointed last season, I think he has an excellent shot at a return to a top-10 player. I'll take my chances with someone who can put up 30+ any given week.

Wanted to draft in the middle, and was happy with the #8 slot.

1.08 Larry Fitzgerald, WR, ARI
Nothing like getting the #1 WR in the game in the first round.
I actually feel pretty confident that he can repeat last season once again.
This is like the first time ever that I haven't went RB/RB/RB in RIFC.
Must be something in the water.
Either that, or you really can teach an old dog new tricks.
Long way to go, but we'll see how things turn out.

Pick 0.12
It was between 11, 12, and 13 I thought I could get Moss and Portis with the 12, but I thought it could be tight at 13, and I didn't know if Portis would have made it back to me at 11. Well as you can see from my next 2 picks my draft choice was perfect.

1.12 Randy Moss, WR, NWE
I knew I wanted to do something different this year to spice up my RIFC experience. I've never taken a non-RB in the first round, so this is an adventure. Even with Brady hurt Moss put up a pretty huge year. I expect 1300 and 10 TDs and anything more is gravy.

1.14 Andre Johnson, HOU
I planned on taking a late slot in the draft, I'll go into more reasons in the final wrap-up.

Johnson isn't as flashy as some other receivers, but he's fairly consistent and I can see a big year with some stability on the team finally.

2.01 Drew Brees, QB, NO

Brady ended up going later in the round and I can see Brady having more points at the end of the year. But coming off of an injury is some what worrying, plus losing their pass-happy OC is a concern. Brees has been good lately and I don't see the Saints in a many 9-6 field goal type games this year.

2.02 Brandon Jacobs- RB NYG

Bit of a homer pick here. I was surprised to see Brees go so early but didn't really consider Brady at #16, Jacobs was even with a top WR or Westbrook or Thomas so I went with my Giant.

Pick #9
There wasn't much left when it got to me so I took the highest slot, closest to the middle. I figured I could get a top performing RB as everyone after AP is about the same for the next 7 or 8 slots.

1.09 Chris Johnson, RB, TEN
I almost took Brian Westbrook here but I came to my senses. Johnson was great last year in his first season and should improve this year. He has a good short yardage back that might take some TD's away from him, but also keep him fresh. Explosive, HR hitter type back. There's alot to like.

2.06 Brian Westbrook, RB, PHI
This is a bit of a risk/reward pick but a little less risky in the second round. Westbrook is one of the best backs of this decade, adept at both running and receiving. But he is getting older now and has never been the healthiest of backs. If he can keep himself off the trainer's table he will be 1st round quality.

1.06 DeAngelo Williams, RB, CAR

Almost took Larry Fitzgerald with this pick but decided to stick with
RB. DeAngelo will likely not duplicate the fantasy gold of last
season but I still expect a very strong season. Should be well
within the top tier of rb's.

2.08 – Steve Smith, WR, CAR

Frankly, the rankings I’m using diverge from consensus, so if they are halfway decent, I should be in excellent shape. For instance, Steve Smith was rated second on my draft board to Moss, not even accounting for any return duties. Is that a bit high? I suspect so, but there’s no doubt that he is talented.

I drafted him in the third round in the first year of the football leagues here when he didn’t even make through one game before his season ended. I’m hoping to miss a repeat of history here.

I won't say why I took 11.

1.11 Marion Barber, RB, Dallas

When I set my queue up, I had targeted four running backs for the pick. Two of them went before it got to 11. I went with Barber because he has the opportunity to get a lot a chances for touchdowns.

2.04, Calvin Johnson, WR , Det

I either wanted to go with Johnson or Reggie Wayne here. The reason why I went with Calvin Johnson here was that he was a top 5 wr basically muscial chairs at quaterback. He should explode this year if that position is stable.

3.14 Darren McFadden, RB, OAK

I took the two Darrens here based on the symmetry between their names and the astrological and numeralogical significance with their draft positions. I foresee these two as the top 2 backs this year by the end of the season.

4.01 Darren Sproles, RB, SD

I hope that no one actually believed the rationale for 3.14. Someone on the discussion page mentioned my disregard of RBs in the first 2 rounds and thought I had these 2 targeted from the beginning. That isn't quite true and I'll provide more details after the draft.

McFadden could be a very good starter or in a time share that makes you want to rip your hair out as a manager. Sproles could be stuck on the bench behind LdT, but I think LdT will either spend time on the sidelines with injuries or the Chargers staff will limit his duty hoping for a play-off run. Regardless I think Sproles will get enough touches to justify his pick here.

I can honestly say I didn't watch his show, so if that's why he's falling to the 4th round, then you all got me! When TO goes to a new home he averages 82 catches, 1190 yards and 13.5 TDs in that first year. He was also 31 and 33, and now he's 36, so age is catching up with him. TO's still got a lot of game left in him even at 36 and I'm thinking 1000 yards with 10 TDs isn't out of line. I looked at TO in the 3rd round, along with Housmanilla, Ochocinco and Marshall, all who went later that round.

3.13 Larry Johnson RB KC
4.02 Donovan McNabb QB Phila

These picks were extremely hard for me.With 7 QB's off the board and my only 9 quality qb's
total and we are already deep in the 3rd tier of injury risks I knew I had to go QB. I also knew Frick had already taken Brees so I could wait for my second next pick for the QB. I hated taking McNabb in the third round- I am used to getting him as a bargain in the 7th round but times have changed- McNabb here is certainly no bargain. Although he is a proven fantasy point producer he is not a playoff player- if he's not hurt by then he has the Giants in cold weather but bottom line is you have to get to the playoffs before you can worry about them and I didn't want to get stuck with a 4th or 5th tier QB. I briefly flirted with doubling up on my QB's going for Schaub and McNabb but I just couldn't pass up a 1000 yard solo RB even if he plays for KC. I really hated to go RB,RB,RB as I believe that strategy is old and no longer a winner given the current depth by committee of RB's but Larry Johnson was too much to pass up for me. Other considerations were TO drafted right after me and Gates but once I determined I needed a QB they were really not viable.

I needed a TB/WR. I had hoped either Wirren or Gates would fall to me but such was not to be. Holmes is a solid early 5th round pick.

6.02 Matt Schaub- QB- Houst

Last remaining quality QB in my opinion. Almost took him 4th round. Anyone drafting McNabb needs a co-#1 QB. Now with depth at RB and QB I am behind in all other areas of the draft. Not sure if this is a good strategy or not- guess it depends on whether I can get any production at all at WR?

2.09 Roddy White - WR Atl

Was tough to pass on Tom Brady but decided I had to go with a
WR. Mr. White has been top tier the past 2 seasons and I fully
expect more of the same with TG taking some attention and the
continued growth of Mr. Ryan.

3.06 Phillip Rivers - QB SD

Decided not to pass on a quarterback here...but it was close.
Hope the new contract inspires another great season.

4.09 Brandon Marshall - WR Denver

Was not thinking WR here but thought he was slipping too low.
If he gets head right with ball - whether with Denver or the team
he forces a trade to - then the pick should be tremendous value.
At least I hear he is no longer running with scout team.
