0 Subject: RIFC AA Draft Rationales

This thread is for RIFC AA draft rationales -- explanations of the thinking behind your pick, and perhaps of alternatives you considered.

You can see what RIFC rationales look like on the main football thread.

In AA, rationales are totally voluntary. You may post rationales for some, all, or none of your picks. Because we don't know who's posting and who's not, we don't worry about following the draft order. We'll start with rounds 1 and 2 (ideally we'd run about two rounds behind the draft), posted in any order, as is convenient for you. You can start with the thinking behind your choice of draft position.

Please don't mention any undrafted player, as of the time you post.

The form is like this:

1.01 Joe Montana, QB, SF

1.10 Andre Johnson, WR, HOU
I was planning on going wide receiver here from the jump as we are able to get 3 WR into our lineups and only 2 RB. I was hoping to get Calvin Johnson but unfortunately he went right before I picked. Andre Johnson is a great back up plan here, just wish receptions counted.

2.06 Marion Barber, RB, Dal
I Was looking for a RB or a QB here. I think Marion Barber gets most of the TDs out of the Dallas background and even with Felix around should easily eclipse 1200 yds. Looking for 12 +TDs with TO gone.

2.11 Greg Jennings, WR, GNB
My tier 2 receivers were all available at this pick, and some of them had fallen to good value in my estimation, so I knew I wanted to take one here. Along with Jennings I also had Wayne and White in mind, but Jennings was my first choice. Wayne ended up going in the pick before mine, making the choice a little easier.

1.04 Michael Turner, RB, ATL
I was first inclined to take Forte here and was prodded by a few Bears fans in the car with me to do so. As soon as I thought of Turner I was pretty sure I wanted him instead...I also considered Jackson for this pick but Turner is a guy I was definitely excited about getting.

0.13 -- 12th Position

I wasn't upset with picking this late. Going in, there were two obvious 1-2 choices, but I wasn't excited by either of them. After them there was a big tier of running backs, 7 ,8, or 9 depending on when I was counting, that were just about equal. I also thot Larry Fitzgerald would be taken somewhere in there, so if I had drafted first, I would have taken position #10. (Interestingly #10 was the last position taken in RIFC, where they presumably know what they're doing). I considered it more important to pick early in the second round to get a top quality #2 RB or top 4 WR picking near the top of the second round.

1.12 Steve Slaton, RB, Hou

There was more interest at WR/QB than I expected leaving 3 candidates here -- Slaton, Frank Gore, and Brian Westbrook. I expect a lot of Gore (who went next at 1.13) this year, but I owned him last year and opted for a little variety. Westbrook was tempting with his all-around skill -- I had even entered his name and was ready to hit "Draft" -- but with his age, fragility, and decline in YPG I balked, and went with youth.

2.03 Brian Westbrook, RB, Phi

Eureka!

1.02 Maurice Jones-Drew, RB

Feature back with a low workload. Potential to be a scoring machine and will pick up a fair amount of recieving yards.

2.13 Kevin Smith, RB DET

Can't break my RB/RB habit - was picking between Pierre Thomas & Smith and figured that Smith will get more carries due to less competition. Plus the Lions can't get any worse!
