RE: 6
How does that matter? He's going to start Ryan every week. He has another starting QB as a backup and traded yet another starting QB before the draft. Drops a guy I thought he was keeping for sure and trades down out of Wells for another QB and Curry.
He may have a great plan. Lord knows I don't have all the answers. Just surprised me. I probably wouldn't have even noticed too much but I looked at his team when before trading for his QB predraft.
I think B7 made some HUGE deals. The new guy did well for himself in at least 3 different deals.

I like when people chime in and offers different opinions, etc. I approved the trade above on CBS so now I'll chime in...
Crabtree has talent--no doubt--but will he ever sign? I htink so--but will it be too late to do anything? Maybe for this year...maybe ever. I've seen so many cases where a guy holds out then never makes it. I think Crabtree is too high profile for not getting more chances though. LJ, I think he's finally back. For how long? Who knows. Charles is right there on his heels but LJ seems to have a new perspective and perhaps some of his immature ways have been repressed. I look for him to bounce way back and with the new passing game that should open things up when his # is called. Short-term I like Shade's side of things. Long-term, could be DS...but who knows?

Is it just me, or has this been the craziest turn of events today? I hope Addai does really well, but Indy has already said that Brown and Addai will split plays and they LOVE Brown. I think Addai has a lot left in the tank, but he hasn't shown it lately. Hopefully Brown pushes him and the fewer reps will mean he does better when he is in there.
Slizz and I were talking about what order players would go in today's draft and he had Brown at #2. I had him at #3, but I see why he had him there.
Obviously that trade is approved and since it has already been picked for this year I'm not going to post it in the draft thread. YOu can send it on CBS if you want. I still have to add it into the traded picks and I'm headed out the door again for a little while.

Addai has been splitting with someone every year but one of his career and he's done alright, so I don't expect it'll be all that different. I just had too many RB's so was looking to realign things. And he'll be the one out there on third down too cause of his pass blocking that Peyton demands.

Did YR know about the early start? If not, it does not seem fair to penalize him given his time zone issues. It was supposed to start at 6 pm but it started at 3, his turn was to be at ~ 8 pm, so his turn really begins at ~11. I would start his clock at 11. We really didn't make the decision until early this afternoon. My suggestion is to start his clock at 11, pause at midnight and I am sure he will be all picked by our am.

Yes. He posted in this thread (#4).
Thing is, we usually get through the first dozen picks very quickly. I figured we'd be through the first 12 by about 6 or so. YR was on my mind when I agreed to start early since it would have been midnight his time before the draft started. We def. need to keep his situation in mind but we do it the same way in all 3 of our Gurupie leagues and to his credit--it's never been an isue for him.

re 55 The scoring was NOT setup correctly afterall. There is an overall scoring but it just covered Offensive players. I've been around just working on this cumulative clock chart. We really move faster after that is posted. I've got the picks entered. Just need to check some formulas.
Please check this chart. Everything is done manually from players pick to round and pick. The averages and per picks are partly for entertainment and partly for us to determine goals or benchmarks where we have to be at a certain point in case we have to lower clocks (which we've not had to do ever). Also I consult this before the following year.
I typically post this sometime after midnight each day but will post here in a few if I can keep from being interrupted.

In the c clock chart, it looks like I have added time for someone erroneously. I went through every pick and couldn't find the error--but when I matched up picks at the top and bottom, there is an extra pick at the top. I've went through and can't find the mistake. We use this to determine who is out of draft picks as there are people with too few picks and ones with too many picks. Please take a peek and ake sure yours is right. Thanks.

Didn't get the c clock up last night. My long week of sleep deprivation got the best of me last night. Still can't figure out the error.
Judy, I didn't get a revised Q--just an email saying not to use the former q.
Again, I am not going to be here all day so don't assume that I can make your pick by sending blind emails. I happened to drop in for less than 5 mins last night and was able to make two blindh Qs then my own pick (who I'd sent a Q off). Best case is identify who can make your Q and if they have to go they can find someone else to hand it off.

re: 155
DS, you are actually permitted to fill your roster. That pick was made by shade and you traded one of your keepers to him for that pick. So you will still have 11 picks to make for yourself. But, even if you had traded for that pick before it was made and took it yourself, you'd still be able to make that 12th pick to fill your roster--jsut as if you'd only kept 8 players. But once your roster hits 20, your draft is over. Can't remember who, but there is at least one trade where there wasn't a pick traded back in the deal.

I'm in and out right now. Just saw that Osi was a FA on CBS then made the pick.
PLEASE PICK UP YOUR PLAYERS IN CBS OR CONFIRM THEY ARE ON YOUR TEAM IF SOMEONE HAD TO PICK FOR YOU.
This has been a public service announcement. ;)
Not picking up your player or emialign the next three can really hurt not only the pace of the draft but that individual manager. If soemone picks a duplicate, the draft continues and the time starts for the next player. It's really unfair esp. for a Qued pick, but Pete actually made his q well after 4.01 so he was going off teh FA in CBS as do MANY of us. Not knowing you're OTC can add time to each to the c clock but really slow down the draft. Please assist. We could actually open a CBS draft room and it auto emails the next manager, but the league has always liked the three or more so it gives them some advance notice.

Well, this was a tough day in terms of number of picks for a Monday. Last year we did 35 on Monday. Today just 21. Nothing to panic about, but need to get through a round per day in order to get things set up and get through two sets of waivers to allow drops from the first waiver run to be re-added.
Four managers are now under six hours. It will fill red if anyone gets under three hours and then we use cumulative time left instead of per pick time. It's unusual for us to have time out issues but two of the four who are low now, also timed out last year. Qs will help us all. If everyone uses their clock, we will never get done, so thanks to everyone for helping.

DS - I'm glad you pointed that out :)Out of all the QB's in this years draft, I feel that Freeman has the best chance to succeed in the NFL. I heard a theory (which I obviously agree with) by Colin Cowherd the other day with respect to starting QB's and success in the NFL. With the exception of Peyton Manning (the one outlier), just about every solid starting QB in the NFL came from a school which was not a perennial football powerhouse or the player was a backup (The Matt Cassels) / had to be a grinder to earn his reps (The Kurt Warners / Tony Romos).
The discussion was geared towards Mark Sanchez and whether he has what it takes to succeed in the NFL. Sanchez might wow you with his potential, but the guy has NEVER seen a pass rush his entire career. NEVER. Tell me how never seeing a pass rush down in and down out can adequately prepare him for the rigors of the NFL? I can hear the groans from Jet fans everywhere...
Matt Stafford - This is a guy who'se career was a disappointment in comparison to David Greene (also another Mark Richt pupil). Sure he might have the "Laser / Rocket" Arm, but just about every time he faced the elite competition such as UF or Alabama, he didn't do so hot. I love Stafford's potential, but what worries me about him is his unimpressive performance vs the elite defenses. (Yea the argument isn't all that convincing, but i'm tired)
Enter Freeman, a guy who was featured as EA Sports "Elite 11" QB prospect out of HS decided to goto Podunk K-State where he has to face the powerhouses like Texas & Oklahoma with inferior talent. Despite all that in the first years under Ron Prince, he succeeded. He has the NFL arm, 30+ starts under his belt and was able to beat Texas twice in his career.
Flipside - Guys like Jay Cutler, Eli Manning, Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, and Philip Rivers: They had to singlehandedly carry their teams of 2 & 3 star recruits and battle the Virginia Techs, The U, Ohio State, and the SEC Elite each week. They faced a ferocious pass rush b/c their talent wasn't as good as the talent lining up across the ball from them, and yet they somehow won. After hearing that and doing a little research myself, I'm convinced that successful QB's in todays NFL raise the level of play of those around them, such as the 2 & 3 star athletes.
As for the use of "franchise", Freeman is a guy that Cards can keep long term (unlike my grim situation) and build his team around.
Slizz - nice analysis. I just think the term is over used. Just because you pay a rookie QB (now) $50-60M doesn't guarantee you success in the NFL nor does college success. IE: Joey Harrington, David Carr, Matt Leinart, Alex Smith (Vince Young?). All were 1st RD top 10 picks (2 - #1 overall). They all went to bad teams initially except VY and that probably had something to do with their lack of success. Especially, Harrington & Carr, they were sacked & hit innumerous times in their first couple of NFL seasons.
I believe it's the speed of the game that separates the NFL players from the rest of us peions. High school 2 College 2 NFL equates in life for me to: crawling 2 walking 2 runing. Can a walking man catch a running man? 1-1000 (maybe). Will any of this year's #1 QBs "run" an NFL offense? I don't know, but they're already paid like they can. None have earned a "Franchise" tag either IMO. You still have to do someting. One hit in the NFL can change your life . That's why they pay Lloyds for some large insurance policies.
That's another issue, the whole "slotting" process and paying the top 1st rounders so many $MM upfront is crazy while underfunding the retirement funds and not paying insurance claims from the NFLPA. Unless the NFL owners get something like the NBA's Rookie Salary Scale in the next Collective Bargaining Agreement, they're doomed to keep gambling on 1st round pick and only doing the minimum for retired players.

There has been some interesting posts on profootballweekly regarding the rookie slots. In general most players are against it because with the salary cap, that money is going to a few select guys who have never put on pads. On the flip side, those contracts are also used when calculating franchise tenders and other contracts and can help an elite few cash in even more.
I think the biggest winners are the agents though. If you ever read any analysis of most contracts you'll see that NFL contracts are on average 50% make believe.

Now that I've added the dominant Lions defense, I'd consider moving NYJ Defense for a good DB or DL -- or perhaps paired with Heap for a TE upgrade.

The only time stamp I got was when it hit my AIM. I aked who it was at first because I wasn't positive if it was Pete or DS lol. Also surprised me cuz Hobbs wasn't listed on any cheat sheet and I had planned to nab him with my next pick. Back to the drawing board. Lots of players so close together it shouldn't matter a whole lot. Let's hope anyhow!
[229] Text sent to him had 2 names and one of them was Ellis Hobbs and the other wasn't. You saw what he texted back. "I'll go with Hobbs, he a ball hog". I suggested the other guy, from my queue but it was his choice. Can't help it if he can't keep his Hobbs straight.

Cards, thanks for emailing or I wouldn't have checked back in for awhile.
Well now. I keep doing research on the few players that are left and making potential Q's for my picks -- usually ten picks in advance, hoping to get lucky. But you guys keep taking them! My cheat sheets are filled with names crossed off! I am pleased that it means that I sort of know what I am trying to do, but it is disappointing that so many not really very good players are being taken ahead of me!! I have 5 more picks left -- 2 in the last round -- and I am very curious to see who will be left. I like the flex positions of the offensive players and that will be the only thing that might keep me close in the actual match ups! It should be an interesting year!

Man, B7 has taken our league by storm with a lot of trades. Thing is, his moves have really been strong ones.
Wasn't around much today and unsure how my time will be the next two days as well. The best chance to get a hold of me is via email. Also, if my pick comes up and I'm not picking--please email me.
C Clock, please not the time remaining. I've got the formulas set up so if they go under 6 hrs they fill blue and 3 hrs they fill red. That is so people know how much time those people have per pick. If they have under 3 hrs, they time out when their c clock runs out and the next person's time auto starts. With trades, it's possible that a perosn will pick two times in a day but it's each manager's responsibility to know when that manager times out. I'll try and post this more often as we near the end of the daft since there are a few with low clocks. Remember Qs cost NO time. But please make sure the person you're sending it to can do it and if something comes up and you can't--please forward it to someone who can.

No they are simply autoskipped for the rest of the draft but may pick at anytime after they have been skipped.
We also have a rule for the end of drafts so people don't intentionally get skipped to wait for news...If you have any skipped picks, you have until the last draft pick has been made (11.24) or 3 hours after you have been skipped (whichever is greater) or you forfeit your missed pick(s).

Ref, you've made some good moves yourself IMO. I don't know if that last trade was necessary, but Faulk had been out there a long time. He'll likely see some playing time on my team. I was going to have to go two rounds without a pick and watch 48 players go off the board. That's like 4 rounds in a normal league. Brutal. I'm wheeling and dealing my way into the basement.

Thank you for the emails--otherwise I may have been a couple more hours getting online.
As ar eminder, make sure you have a legal roster before the freeze. If you don't draft you minimal position--you're going to have to pick one up off the wire or trade.
question on 9.17. I think that is Pete's Q--not ds' pick as it appears. I emailed ds but he's away. I'll check in later. Thanks for a much speedier day thus far! Really want to keep the draft out of Labor Day weekend as much as possible--but we've been slow this week. The c clock is working though as the ones with a short clock are picking quickly.
Actually, it's nice when my picks are coming up during the middle of the work day while I'm sitting at my computer. I leave work at 6 most days and don't get home until late usually. When I leave work with 10 picks or more before me, and I get home around midnight to find I've been on the clock for 3 hours or more that's just what happens sometimes. With all the different directions I've considered, it makes no sense to leave a queue of more than 1-2 players. I guess most people have the opposite timeframes since access is easier at nights, just not for me. I try not to be one of those people checking my Iphone all night either, but I did have to make three picks using it while I was out West last week!
[284] Corrected the post to show it as a pick from Peter N's email queue. I'd emailed the queue to Cards if there were any questions.
Corrected post 201 in supplemental draft thread to indicate a draft # (9.02).

Re: 268 B7, I am unsure where I stand. My guess is middle of the pack--but I do have some scenarios where it could be better and some where it could be worse. I need some things to happen to do a lot though. I've thought I would be bottom of the pack two seasons ago when Favre went nuts and thought I'd be missle of the pack last season and got some breaks--esp from some IDPs. Not having that first round pick has been haunting me, but it was worth it. Wouldn't have done it had I known Favre was coming back though.

TRADE ANNOUNCEMENT
GO's Jets & Slizz's Bills have agreed to the following trade:
293: PD, I will re-check things. Could be the Addai trade took away a pick from you and gave GO his 12th pick and that's why it's balanced with you missing a pick. Not going to have much time again today but should be on some late tonight and maybe have two breaks today to check on things.
294: So whenever 10:18 picks, 10:20's time will start immediately. Someone please email that info to 10.20 as I'm leaving right now.

Just checking in for a few. Had hoped we'd get through the 10th round by now since we tend to slwo down on Fri afternoon anyhow and with Labor Day Weekend...oh well, we will hopefully finish the draft tomorrow.
Twarpy times out in 2:17 form last pick so IIRC that's 4:59 ET.
RE:299 We have done separate Recap threads in the past, but I think we will just do them in this thread after the draft is done. It takes us some time to set the league up anyhow before we can get waivers turned on. We will stay in this thread until waivers are turned on which basically starts our season.

Looking at the C clock chart, anyone who has two picks left has more than 6 hrs left so I won't need to post this again until the draft is done. Besides Twarpy who tmed out and will have his final pick auto-skipped, only skinneej has anything less than their 3 hrs left. He has 1:08 left. I just hope we don't have people timing out as we really need to get through this on Saturday. That would give us the day to set up waivers on Sunday at the latest.
Our slowest day yet. Now on Labor Day Weekend-Saturday we have to do what we did today just to finish. I put in GO's q so we got one out of the way already.

If anyone wants to do a recap, or thoughts on picks/trades other's draft, etc. Go ahead and post here. Going to get some work done on CBS to get the season going. My guess is that waivers open tomorrow.

Going through the teams:
Looks like Peter N is short a player. Need to pick it up for him before we start waivers. He also doesn't have a DL.
Cards does not have a DL.
Looks like all other players have their drafted players and are legal.

I hadn't realized that live scoring was turned on for the preseason. Very cool.
No one wants to post any post-draft thoughts or their draft strategy or any surprises, etc. on the draft?

OK, I'll just make mine while we wait...
Some surprises in somewhat random order(doesn't mean they won't turn out well for those managers...)
Pre draft trades: -AF's trade of Shaub to me...Turns out I offered more than what he countered. --PD's trade to keep Gamble. I get that he is a pretty good corner who should return at times, but could have gotten him later on in the draft. Trades at the top of the draft are huge--esp. when PD could use a QB and Sanchez should be there at 5. --AF's trade to keep Curry. This blows my mind as AF could really use Wells and already has tow QBs. Turns out he got Sanchez anyhow and Curry didn't even make the team. --AF keeping Mare. Only 7 Kickers were kept and there is a great chance that Mare doesn't make the team. --AF cutting Norwood. If I had known Norwood would be cut, I'd have offered a high pick for him. --Crabtree pick and trade for LJ. Jury is still out on this one, but Crabtree has a lot of upside--jsut may be long-term thing. LJ should have plenty of value this season but prob not too long. I was sure Harvin, Stafford and Davis would have been gone by now. --DL Justin Tuck at 11. Judy already regrets this pick. He would have been around much later and lots of talent she passed on. StL Cards...He needs a QB and just misses Stafford after he fell farther than I imagined. But instead he gets an absolute steal in Davis--who might even start this year! Then after I saw McGahee was falling, I tried my darnedest to try to get back in the first round so I could draft him and Cards gets his at 2.10!!!! Now he's still w/o a starting QB but gets two HUGE QBs who slipped, no make that SLID. Then instead of getting a starting QB who was STILL available in Leftwich (I thought he might go with him over Freeman in the first) he lands Freeman at 3.10. Freeman is more of a longer term, obviously but still a value pick. It still eaves him short a starting QB (unless Thigpen starts if Cassel is out) but it makes his team better long-term. BUt then he comes back with Culpepper who still may start initially for the Lions. I personally doubt it but from all I've read it's a 50-50 chance. Cards is pretty excited about his 6.10 pick of TE Cook too. All in all HUGE VALUE. Cards definitely had one of the best drafts--esp for his draft position. --B7 I posted in the thread earlier, he's new to the league but his trades and picks were very shrewd. He really made his team a lot better already. --Slizz continued passing on DEF then trading for the Lions after all the Ds were gone and he was still w/o one.
My strategy was no secret. I had to get a QB, RB, WR and take care of my depth. Pre keepers, I dealt for Shaub. Now I've read a lot about him being injury-prone and don't give up too much for this guy or put too much stock in him because of that. But, when a guy falls on you, that's more of a freak occurrance to me. Also those same people will extoll his ability and his weapons. Favre had retired so I had to make a move. AF made an offer I couldn't refuse. Then BOOM! Plax cops and is gone for sure. Favre comes back and now I'm short yet another keeper--Forcing me to trade two players I wanted to keep. Josh Wilson led the league in KR yards and really came on late as a DB. Scored well for me w/o KR yardage even counting. Then Hixon has some huge upside starting for NYG. I traded them to Slizz for almost nothing--but there wasn't a market for them apparently. I really wanted to keep them both. I decided to keep one initially but when Doug offered me Fred Jackson for a midround exchange--I shipped them. I had to have a RB and Jackson should get me some touches and points for those first 3 weeks esp.
Being unable to get high enough to land McGahee when I finally came up at 2.22 I took Ricky Williams. Just wanted a RB who might get me some pts. Looked at RBs and WRs. At 3.22 I was shocked to see LB Cooper still there. Then I looked and saw that he was rated low on most sites. Thing is, he only played 12 games last year but his numbers were way up there. Avg over 9 points for me per game last year. Did I reach? Possibly, but still it's great value if he puts up the same numbers.
At 4.14 I took Fred Taylor. Looked at him in the first with Ricky and was a bit surprised he was still here. RBBC in NE with FOUR RBs clouds things a lot. I just took a stab here. Might be a wasted pick altogether but he's listed as the starting RB right now so who knows.
At 5.01 I took Hartline. I was looking at him and Collie at 4.14 and Collie here as well but Hartline is doing well and is getting some reps as #2 in Miami. Collie is clearly behind Wayne and even TE Clark. AGonz is ahead of him as well for now so he's still perhaps the 4th option--which sitll might be good in Indy's O. After making the pick I saw that Hartline was bumped up to #2 starter but in the final preseason game, Pennington didn't even look his way. Could be a busted pick as well. He will get on the field--but is he worth it? Hard to say.
5.22 I took Crosby. had NO intention of taking a K this high. But didn't want to reach and of the positions I wanted/needed I felt he was the most ahead of the next guy or group of guys left. I really like him. He's working on his accuracy even harder and has a big leg. Very important for our scoring system.
At 6.01 Meriweather could be a reach too, but I just like his upside. I saw later that he was a week 8 bye which hurts with my other week 8 IDP byes. This was a position of need more than anything at this point. I know I could have gotten decent DBs later, but reading up on this guy made me think it could be a good one.
7.22 and 7.23. I had 3 guys I was looking at here. Collie and Nedney is who I went with and Chris Carr was the third. I was shocked to see Collie--a starter for the pass-happy Colts is still available. That was an easy one for me. He may not score a lot but it's worth the risk here for my last offensive player. Nedney vs. Carr...A backup K can be at a premium. There were only three Ks I like left. I decided to grab one for injury protection and bye week rather than get some scrub in the last round. I was hoping Carr would fall to me next roudn since he doesn't even start but his kr and pr yards might give me a reason to start him at times and during week 8. Turns out Carr wehn right after me so I prob should have nabbed him afterall and grabbed one of the many Ks still left at mynext pick.
8.22 Demps is starting FS and returning so we should get a few points the week(s) I can start him. Non week 8 bye was the key.
9.22 Kerney, I really really like this guy and was very happy to fill my DL slot with this caliber of a guy so late. Hope he stays healthy and puts up the numbers he was before he went down.
11.22 Cushing--Simply looking for a diamond in the rough IDP w/o a week 8 bye. This rookie should be starting at the SAM. He's been hurt and missed all preseason games but is a go for week 1--so might not start right away. Still, he's not starting for me anyhow--at least not initialy.
I am not sure which pick I'd sacrifice right now if I saw a player I wanted on waivers. Probably would depend on the position I wanted.
Waivers have been turned on and the season is underway. However, please continue posting draft recaps here while we wait for the NFL season to kickoff.

My team needed rebuilding as evidenced by keeping 2 WRs that probably wouldn't have even been drafted, but they were still the best I had. I was also coming in to the draft with no QB. I tried to acquire a QB during the offseason but had one traded to another team and another I couldn't get a deal done for predraft, although in hindsight I probably missed a good opportunity on that one.
Looking my team over I still have the #2 scoring RB and top WR as rated by 3 year averages along with a top 10 LB, so I'm not ready to totally blow off the season as a loss. With the 10th overall draft pick I didn't think any of my targets would fall to me, including Sanchez and Stafford. I would have drafted Stafford had he been there, but I really didn't want to, so glad he was taken a pick ahead.
I knew I wanted a franchise player with my top pick but didn't think I'd would get one. Brown and McCoy were top targets but knew they would never make it. Harvin was the top WR but I do have Avery as a young prospect already so really wanted a RB. With Jamal Lewis being older and soon to retire I was sure that BJ21 would take Davis, but ultimately he felt that Stafford was much better value. Davis was having a great camp and I figured he was working his way into a starter for next year.
Not having a QB I did think about taking Leftwich but there was a reason he wasn't kept and I didn't want to waste my pick on a QB that might not even win the starting job but certainly wasn't a franchise player. I actually considered taking Freeman here, but likely would have taken Harvin if Davis was gone.
When looking at non-keepers I was surprised to see McGahee available and considered him first as well. Rice taking over made me wait, but long term McGahee should be a starter somewhere. He will be due huge money next season and will likely be playing somewhere else and starting. He should also have motivation to play well this season.
When the 3rd pick came around it had become apparent that Leftwich was the starter but I still wanted a long term solution and not have to beg for a crappy QB every year, so I took the last first round drafted QB who is being groomed to take over as early as this year.
I still needed a QB and figured if he were there I would take Leftwich, but he was drafted already. The last of the possible starting QBs was Culpepper so I took him. Hopefully the Lions will remember what happened the last time they threw a young QB into the fire and will decide to develop Stafford slowly.
Had I not had to take Culpepper I would have looked at IDP the round before, but decided I needed to address the LB position. I was hoping I could get Laurinaitis but Promize got him first. Tulloch plays on a great D so he should do as well as any starting MLB left.
For round 6 I kept filling out needs and TE was one. Most people already had a TE and there weren't any quality TEs left. Cook however is another guy that appears headed to big things and is on a team that like to throw to the TE. I expect only ok numbers from limited reps this season but hoping he turns into a keeper.
Next picks I took Foote as another starting MLB and then went with Payne as a DB figuring he'd win the starting job in CHI. 10th pick I saw two WRs both having good pre-season, Clowney and Sims-Walker. I would have taken Sims-Walker with my last pick but he was gone, so with my last pick I went with Brandstater as a long shot. Figured I had plenty to cut to add a DL before the first game.

Looks like Mare jsut beat out Contu and made the team. Slizz jsut bragged to me today when he found out Hixon is also the KR/PR for the Giants. I should have my trade up tehre as a surprised since it could turn out to be such a bad move.

I might do a full recap later, but (in response to ref's #347), Sanchez was not named as the starter until the day our draft started.
My problem going into the draft was the same problem I have right now--what is the status of Derek Anderson? If he's the starter (and he could be--he's got a stronger arm than Quinn and is a better leader) than I'll do OK at the position. If not, then I've got to make a move. If the situation was settled before the draft I would have kept Anderson (if he was the starter) or traded the pick for a decent starting QB from someone else.
The Gamble, pickup, however, will lock down an IDP position with a guy who should pile up the points. He's better than any IDP I had and so is a step up.

PD, just because I was surprised or wouldn't have done something, doesn't mean it wasn't nec. the right move for your team. Time will tell. As far as the QB goes--even if Sanchez isn't named the starter--he will be soon. I personally think DA is better than Quinn, but with all the money involved and draft position, I think it will be Quinn...if not now then really soon. I like Gamble and got him really late in my RIFC league, but my only point was that you could have gotten him later on in the draft and didn't need to trade out of a QB spot to get him. Sanchez and Stafford could both fall on their faces and you might be glad you did. The Addai mov surprised me too, but he still is going to get quite a few touches.
I just read today that Hartline might not start afterall. Got him in RIFC league as well so that could be a big blow to my plans. Shows you what I know.

Apologies for the delay in getting this out as I haven’t been around much…
SLIZZ’S DRAFT DIARY
Before the draft started, I was still busy trying to fill out my roster. As it stood, I only had 7 solid keepers (6 if you don’t count crappy Trent Edwards) and needed 2 more to fill out my roster. After talking to a couple teams, Ref and I were able to get a last minute deal done where Domenik Hixon & Josh Wilson got shipped to my squad for a 2009 4th round pick and a 2010 conditional 10th round pick. While I wasn’t sold on trading for both Hixon and Wilson, I needed 2 more keepers as the ones on my roster just weren’t that great.
Draft day comes along and I am not as optimistic about my season as I once was due to the emergence of James Davis during the preseason. Had I had a first round pick (Thanks, Toral!) my goal would have been landing James Davis with it, so that way I can hedge the Cleveland Browns backfield situation since I already had Jerome Harrison via my trade with Judy thinking he could be this years fantasy sleeper. From Football Outsiders: Harrison has been extremely productive from a per-touch standpoint for two years, yet he has never carried the ball more than eight times in a game. That’s a little silly, particularly on a team that routinely gave Jamal Lewis 20 touches per game so he could grind out 66 yards. Harrison is small, but lots of 5-foot-9 running backs thrive in a 12- to 15-carry, four- to five-catch role. The new Browns staff may use Harrison the way they used Leon Washington in New York last season: as a passing down back in an offense where second-and-4 is considered a passing down. Harrison deserves the expanded role. If we’re right about Jamal Lewis collapsing, he’ll get it.
Unfortunately, Jerome was nursing a leg injury throughout camp and James Davis took advantage of the opportunity presented to him. He showcased that he could potentially be a game-changer vs. Detroit on that 81 yard carry for a TD…after that, various media outlets and fantasy publications were on him like white on rice. So kudos, Cards, on a draft-day steal!
So now I only have 7 solid keepers, Trent Edwards, & Jerome Harrison with no real draft plan other than hoping that Earl Bennett falls past CC Rider to me in the 2nd round.
Phew! I got Earl Bennett. I can envision a Eddie Royal-esque season for the kid. Set SEC Records, was Cutlers’ go-to guy in College, and was getting a lot of looks in the preseason. As a Bears fan this is a win/win situation for me. I get a guy who can not only ball, but plays on my beloved Chicago Bears!
Had CC Rider or another forward-thinking owner took him, I would have gone with Josh Freeman of Tampa Bay (for reasons I listed in the G24 Draft Discussion). So I just crossed my fingers and hoped he would fall to me in the next round.
Of course, Cards breaks my heart again in taking Freeman. I feel like I am stuck with a crappy QB till infinity and beyond…there aren’t any good QB’s coming out in next years draft (If you think McCoy is gonna do good…see Vince Young. VY was 10x the football player McCoy is. That’s like saying Larry Coker was a better coach at Miami than Butch Davis b/c of his winning streak…same goes for Bradford. Snead has a shot at being a solid NFL starter…but I need more film on him). With Freeman now gone, I decided to go out and get my first LB. I google “Fantasy Football IDP Rankings” which brought me to a site, FF Today, and they had Timmons in the top 10! Plus he was a Free Agent! How could I say no!?!? Well if I actually looked over the linebackers, I should have taken Aaron Curry from the Seahawks. Curry was a playmaker the minute he stepped on the field at Wake Forest and most scouts expect him to have a similar impact on Seattle’s defense. But no…I let some stupid draft projection tell me otherwise…
So now I have Bennett and Timmons and am starting to feel good about the Timmons pick b/c I came across an ESPN.com article on 2nd & 3rd year players ready to “Break Out” in 2009:
Shortly after, Aaron Curry was taken and that “NEWMAN!” frustration came when Curry was taken right after the pick I traded to Ref for Wilson and Hixon. This draft couldn’t be going any worse for me, I thought. So since I had the articles up from ESPN.com, I said to myself “let me see if there is any other ‘Break Out’ candidates that are still available that would present tremendous at the early-mid round stages of the draft. Ahh yes, Robert Meachem. While I loved Kenny Philips and Brandon Meriweather, they didn’t warrant 4th round selections. At least with Meachem, I get insurance on Colston and if he does break out, I get a valuable trade chip to hopefully upgrade my woeful QB situation. Meachem it is!
5th round comes around, I have my offensive roster completely filled, but only 2 IDP and no DST. I am immediately regretting my pick of Meachem. I realize that I need to fill out more IDP, a kicker, and a DST in the next two rounds. I tell Ref this and can only think he’s probably snickering at my draft strategy. Sure enough, GO starts the kickers run. For the Kicker spot, my goal is to get Josh Brown from the get-go because A) he has a bye week 9 and B) he kicks in a dome for a team that doesn’t punch the ball in the end zone much. C) He won’t be among the 1st kickers taken so I can wait a round. To me, that = fantasy goodness.
Anyhow, I take Rey Maualuga and bungle the spelling like I do of the last name Jonez. After watching ‘Hard Knocks’, Zimmer said the guy is a definite starter and sure enough he won the Starting Strongside Linebacker job in Cincy. If you look at his college statistics, his #’s were similar to Patrick Willis’ at Ole Miss. However, P-Willy played on a crappy Ole Miss team with next to zero talent whereas Rey played with the best at USC. I can only hope that he comes close to P-Willy status.
Round 6 arrives and I am faced with a decision: Go with the Rams DST or get Josh Brown. I went with the latter as I didn’t want to risk not getting a solid kicker going into the 7th round and because CBS and just about every other publication has St. Louis next to last in defensive projections, I figure I could get them one round later as plenty of people that had defenses did not have Kickers....Mission Accomplished, Josh Brown it is. Ref messages me, you should’ve gone DST! I message him back, Ref, I’m going with St. Louis like I said I would pre-draft…no way they go given their projections. Unlike most ppl, I take a contrarian perspective when it comes to drafting players. I look for undervalued players later on that could help my team in the long haul, such as Jerome Harrison. When I hit (Roddy White) I look like a genius. When I miss (Derek Hagan) I look like a putts. My sleeper defense this year is the St. Louis Rams and here is why (courtesy of Football Outsiders):
Teams that use a lot of draft value (based on the classic “draft value chart”) on offensive linemen improve on offense the following season. Correlation does not equal causation — the 2002 Bills* improved because they traded for Drew Bledsoe, not because they drafted Mike Williams fourth overall — but the numbers are pretty stunning. From 2001-2008, a dozen teams used at least 1,200 “draft value points” on offensive linemen during the first four rounds of the draft. All 12 teams improved on offense the following season, by an average of 15 percentage points of DVOA. Of course, nearly all of these offenses were below average the year before, but they weren’t necessarily bottom of the barrel. Four of the five teams that spent at least 2,000 “value points” on offensive linemen improved by more than 20 percentage points of DVOA, and all five of these teams had offensive DVOA above 0.0% that season.
While every one of those teams didn’t produce a playoff record, they were way better than they were the previous season. Coupling that with the fact that the offense was actually sustaining drives, the defense was able to give more fantasy-friendly numbers…
Back to the draft…Browns defense goes, no big deal. We enter the 7th round and only 13 more picks before I am on the clock “no st. louis no st. louis no st. louis…” ::drumroll:: 7.02 comes along and Frick takes the G-D Rams DST! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I get an IM from Ref politely asking if he can say “I told you so…” In the meantime, I’m furious b/c the only defense left is the Detroit Lions. While they aren’t going to be as bad as Denver or some other defenses that were taken, I am not exactly thrilled with their prospects as I was with St. Louis. So Frick, Child Please!
I get a queue from GO asking me to pick for him. Who do I see atop the list? Detroit Lions DST! I laugh and roll my eyes. I think for a second…maybe this is a good thing because I can vent my frustration with having to fill the mandatory DST spot instead of a IDP / Flex option instead…either way, I cant worry about that now, I just have to focus on the draft.
I refer to the ESPN.com article about “Breakout Players” and immediately take Kenny Phillips hoping that he can put up #’s similar to Gibril Wilson when he was playing Safety for the Jints.
Ref messages me asking what am I going to do now? I say go with that illegal lineup and forfeit games until something gets done. He warns me that it’s going to rub a lot of people the wrong way, but at that point I thought I’d rather be a martyr if it passes a Flex IDP/DST option for future years. Later that night, I get an email from Cards politely letting me know that in 7 years nobody has ever fielded an illegal lineup and it would be a shame for the league to see that. I felt bad b/c I wouldn’t want to be “that guy” who ruins the league culture that Cards and Ref have established, so started working with GO to make a trade for the lowly Lions defense, which ended up happening and he got a late pick upgrade and Phillips for the same reasons I drafted him.
Since the draft is coming to a close, owners are just looking to fill up their roster spots. Fortunately, I was able to get starting LB’s in Houston (Diles) and Washington (McIntosh…in a contract year), Detroits starting Strong Safety (Delmas), 2nd kicker (Nugent), and I’ll play musical chairs with respect to a DL.
Hope you enjoyed the draft from my perspective!!!
As for what picks I really liked (round by round):
1.07 – Percy Harvin 1.10 – James Davis 2.10 – Willis McGahee 2.11 – Earl Bennett 3.10 – Josh Freeman 4.02 – Danieal Manning – Leading KR in NFL plus nickel back on the Bears 4.15 – Aaron Curry 5.23 – Chaz Schilens – Great value on a guy who could be a 1,000 WR 6.06 – Nick Barnett 6.10 – Jared Cook – Could be the next Greg Olsen. Lets see if he can run block. 7.02 – St. Louis Rams Defense – reasons above 7.22 – Austin Collie – slated to be the Colts slot WR and is getting extra reps with Peyton. 8.08 – Deon Butler – Read Peter Kings MMQB Tuesday Edition from 9/8/09. 9.13 – Calvin Pace – GO Gets a guy who was a #1/#2 LB when he starts…in Rex Ryan’s Defense!! 10.01 – Alphonso Smith – Rumored to be the Starting KR/PR in Denver. If he gets that gig, wow…that’s Money in the Bank! I mean Denver is gonna have arguably the worst team in the NFL…so that’s lot of Kicks and Punts for Smith! 11.22 – Brian Cushing – While Diles got his reps in preseason, he will be the strongside linebacker and Diles is taking the weakside from Adibi.
Draft Day Surprises
When it comes to this leagues draft, there aren’t too many surprises. However, when it comes to AF & PD, that’s another story…As a Browns fan, PD had to know that they were going with Quinn and not Anderson given the fact they need to know if Quinn can be their “QB of the Future”. Therefore, I had him as a lock for either Stafford or Sanchez with his first pick. He than made the head scratching trade down for Chris Gamble putting his chances of getting either Stafford or Sanchez in jeopardy as I had Shade taking one of the QB’s. Despite that, Stafford still fell to him…and what does he do? He trades the pick for Joseph Addai. Don’t get me wrong, Joseph Addai will be a solid starter for the for the 1st half of the season / until Donald Brown takes over. Once he takes over, PD has the next Dominic Rhodes, no QB, and no 2010 1st round draft pick (which, as of now is looking to be the 1.01 to GO) to get a QB with.
I don’t want to hear the excuses “I don’t know if they’re starting or not.” You think the teams that drafted them and paid them $40 million in guarantees are going to let them sit the bench? C’mon PD. I see your insightful posts on the Political Forum and know you are not that naive.
2nd surprise is AF. The trade down to get Ronald Curry who didn’t make the team and than taking Sanchez after saying the reason he wasn’t competitive is b/c he was constantly carrying 3 QB’s. Also dropping Norwood to keep Olindo Mare…I think Mare will be fine kicker, but you don’t drop a guy who is going to get at least 10 touches a game plus kickoff return duties on a team with an awful defense. ::shakes head::
3rd surprise was the LJ Deal. I love it for both sides. DS gets the upside of Crabtree. Shade FINALLY locks down a starting running back. He already kept Jamaal Charles and is slowly piecing together a contender. Its not very often you see a win/win trade that benefits both sides.
League surprises – Owners finally value IDP. More quality players were kept and drafted early on…which is a good thing!

Good stuff Slizz. I'm absolutely rolling the dice on Anderson. AF and I had a lot of back and forth as well for a QB trade (which might still happen). I really felt the lack of a RB would hurt a lot more than a QB which is why I got Addai.
Hard to build back up, but I think this is a work in-progress. I'm not done making moves yet.

1.01, Knowshon Moreno
I would have liked to trade down with this pick as I didn't see any can't miss picks this year, but I'm happy with Moreno provided McDaniels doesn't go with a true RBBC.
2.02 Pierre Garcon
When I made the pick Garcon was looking to be the Colts 3rd WR. With the news today that Collie got the spot for this week, this pick doesn't look as good. The upside is Garcon is rumored to be a KR for the Colts, so I have that going for me.
2.15 Chad Henne, QB, MIA
I obtained this pick from the Maroney for Barber trade last year. At the moment I would say that I'm behind on that trade, but I was correct in that Maroney was hurt for most of last year (and more significantly than the NE staff reported, big shock). Unless Barber learns to avoid some contact I see him missing significant time each year until he is done from injuries in a short time. Henne appears to be the QB of the future in Miami, and given Pennington's injury history I might have two starting QBs, which is a huge step up from last year's 0.
3.02 Jonathan Vilma, LB, NO Hopefully Vilma puts up big numbers here, but I wish I had taken Lofton who I could be a top-10 LB.
4.02 Daniel Manning, CB, CHI
Slizz already listed my reasons for this pick, with Hester not returning kicks to focus on being a WR, Manning will hopefully have decent value.
5.02 Kyle Vanden Bosch, DL, TEN
Meh, I could have waited to get a DL or picked one up from the ww. I'm curious to see how VandenBosch does without Haynesworth to demand double teams.
7.02 St. Louis Rams, D/ST
I almost took a 2nd D/ST in the last round so don't feel to bad Slizz. I was surprised at when some of the D/STs went, but I was happy to get St Louis here.
Clint Sessions a IDP who could be on the ww in a few weeks, we'll see.
Rex Grossman - This pick is looking up. Grossman made the Texans roster and looks to have the inside track as the 2nd string QB. With Schaub's injury history Grossman could get some time this year and he has an pretty big incentive to do well and hope for another short or contract next year.
I'm not liking the fact that I need injuries to 2 QBs, to have a back-up, while hoping that my starting QB stays healthy.
10.02 Garrett Wolfe, RB, CHI Now the back-up RB in CHI, I wonder if Slizz was pissed when I made this pick?
Patrick Cobb, flyer pick who might get some touches as a KR.

Judy's take on the whole process.
This is my first keeper league and the largest group of managers and I think that became a bit overwhelming, plus all the trade crap for future drafts picks was a bit much! I draft to win basically now. That may change - but I do not see managers keeping a lot of the early rookie picks unless they really shine this season...
Two early trades were made: I got McNabb/D Jack for Brady/ White. I saw that as even up. I got Hightower for Harrison and lost a #2 pick -- BAD move. It should have been a straight up trade. Oh, well -- I was too busy with the AAA draft...
My keepers were now: McNabb, Grant, Hightower, D Jackson, Keller, Jints DEF, Suggs, Dansby and Cromartie. The only one I didn't really want was Cromartie. DB are a dime a dozen. I should have kept Rackers and picked up another DB in the draft.
Most of the folks on my wish lists were long gone by my turn, so I felt like I was picking at the dregs of the player list for the whole draft...24 picks is a long time to wait for your turn!
1.11 Tuck -- poor pick - did not watch what was happening in draft - just went for best DL to fill a need, plus late bye. 2.11 gone 3.11 Stokley -- eh - needed a WR -- most on my list were long gone --who knows what will happen in Denver 4.11 Buckhalter -- wanted another RB --liked him in Philly, will start in the beginning of season over Moreno -- good back up -- besides RB in Denver get injured a lot -- I think they went through 7 RB last season. 5.11 Henderson -- #2 WR for pass happy Brees -- has hard hands, but runs decent routes; maybe this year he'll be using stickier gloves! 6.11 Horton -- love this kid -- flies all around the secondary making tackles and should get some more Ints this year. Wash should spend a decent amount of time on D. 7.11 C Griffin -- another DB that I like for tackles 8.11 Avant - expect him to be #2 WR utill Maclin matures. Big enough to run short routes at Goal line with Celek. 9:11 J Taylor -- whatever -- he is a great dancer! Should be OK at LB -- if not, he goes! 10.11 Dawson - desperate for a kicker -- only three starters were left (what's with the drafting of 2 pk?) and 2 teams were still deciding which one to keep Shoulda kept Rackers in the beginning! 11.11 Kolb -- in case Donovan goes down. I believe that Kolb will be the primary QB with VIck coming in for his plays. 11.14 Orlovsky -- needed a QB for bye week (4) - no starters left -- picked Orlo as Schaub back up -- whoops Grossman won the job, so I waivered him into my lineup.
How will my team do? I have no idea. What am I trying to accomplish with my team? I have no idea! I need a season to see what happens in this league, while trying to win a few contests with what I have. Injuries will of course, play a huge role.
I thought it was interesting though that many of the players picked up through waivers were still on my wish list...24 teams worth of players does not leave a lot of good players laying around...

Judy, your deal for Hightower may ba a really good one. You're getting a starting RB--albeith Wells is gonna get his time for a guy who might not get on the field much since Davis passed him. Hightower is still young. There is no way Slizz trades you Hightower straight-up. You may like that deal more and more as the season goes on.

Strange item.
In [355[ Frick talks about the nice Grossman draft pick (9.02). In [356}, I (judy) mention that I picked him up on waivers from the FA pool on the first go round. I looked for Grossman transactions and did not find any except mine.
Frick -- you don't have Grossman any more!!

After investigating this it seems that Frick did draft him as a q pick at 9.02. As a courtesy we skim through teams and see if we see anything abnormal to pick up players for people who fialed to get them--but we always say that it is each manager's responsibility for picking up their players. If he had let us know before waivers run--we would have let him have him. So he had about a week before he was claimed on waivers. Once waivers have run, you lose all rights to your drafted players that were not picked up.
I think Frick and Twarpy are short a player now.

Sorry Frick -- but I do need him. I didn't know about it until I read your recap after I posted mine...and saw the confusion.
I have no defense for any of these moves but I can explain what happened before each of them. It was a bad time for a draft and a bad time to make trades. I'm probably going to hang up my spikes; I mean turn in my resignation after this year, turn in my laptop. I am going to try and leave my successor with something to work with.
-AF's trade of Shaub to me...Turns out I offered more than what he countered.
I drafted my QB's before they were starters (except for Sanchez) and tried to move them the past two years but nobody wanted them. This year I got some inquiries here and there. I said fine "I'll take your first round pick for Schaub" Would you believe I didn't look at what number pick you had. I assumed it was top 10 at least. I don't know why. What did you counter again?
--AF's trade to keep Curry. This blows my mind as AF could really use Wells and already has tow QBs. Turns out he got Sanchez anyhow and Curry didn't even make the team.
7 wanted the number 2 pick and I asked him who he wanted. He told me. I was going to cut a deal with him where I pick Wells at 2 then he pick Sanchez at 5 and we would make a trade after the round. (You know like in real life) I was trying to figure out who I wanted from him but my pick was fast approaching, finally I came to the conclusion that Sanchez would probably still be there at 5. He was. I think many of you know I'm a big Atlanta homer, 7 was an Ohio State fan trying to get his guy. I helped him do that. As far as Curry, would you believe I thought he was someone else? In the end it didn't matter anyway.
--AF cutting Norwood. If I had known Norwood would be cut, I'd have offered a high pick for him.
If I was offered something for Norwood before I cut him I wouldn't have cut him. Drafted him as a rookie. Being from Atlanta I saw Turner come in here and absolutely dominate the RB position. I didn't think there was much left for Norwood to do. Did rule change #2 pass?
2nd surprise is AF. The trade down to get Ronald Curry who didn’t make the team and than taking Sanchez after saying the reason he wasn’t competitive is b/c he was constantly carrying 3 QB’s. Also dropping Norwood to keep Olindo Mare…I think Mare will be fine kicker, but you don’t drop a guy who is going to get at least 10 touches a game plus kickoff return duties on a team with an awful defense. ::shakes head::
As I said I had my eye on Sanchez anyway. I really thought Curry was someone else. (I'll let you know) I would have taken Stafford but preferred Sanchez. This also enabled me to deal one of my other QB's (today) for Driver.
I thought I explained this before. I am a founding member of this league and I was unable to make the auto draft (yes there was one believe it or not) my computer picker didn't pick me a QB so I found myself without a QB the entire year. I never want to be without one again. It's a sinking feeling. I'm guessing I am experiencing a psychological phenomenon, a hypnagogic regression. I swear to god it isn't my fault
I want to thank all the people that made text picks for me this past draft. Couldn't have done it without you.
Good luck to all and I apologize for being out of the loop so much this year.

This league originally had an auto-draft? that seems like an odd decision..

Incorrect. Our first draft was a live or "fast-draft."
Going in everyone said they could make the time--but IIRC two people didn't show. We have the lsit of the original draftees in a thread somewhere...

If a draftee timed out, their pick was auto-selected for them. Maybe that's what AF means.

That's how I ended up with the TB Defense, which I thought was a disastrous pick but which turned out to be a great pick, given our scoring for the league.

Man... I had such a bad initial draft in this league, save for the Eagles D lol. I think I've consistently done much better in our drafts in the years following.
