0 Subject: Bar Names???

Posted by: louky
- [550511210] Fri, Oct 07, 2005, 21:16

Thought I would throw this out to the Gurupies. I just purchased a sports bar, and I'm considering a name change after I do a little face lift on the place. I have a few ideas, but nothing I'm totaly sold on. Gurupies tend to be a clever bunch...any ideas on a name? It's about 4700 square ft, the usual TV's and bar food, bands on the weekends.

If I choose any name submited here, I'll send you a nice photo of the finished product, and of course drinks on the house if you are ever in Louisville.

Beezer, very impressive Derby knowledge, I actualy had to google 85 results to verify 2:00 and 1/5, but it did sound right. Nice tie in with the drink specials too.

Didn't have the winner that year, I never can take the speed in the Derby.

louky, what is your email now. Everytime I've tried to get a hold of you the past couple of years your email has bounced.

I always thought "The Elbow Room" sounded cool.

The Elbow Room already exists in West Hartford, Connecticut. Great name, mediocre bar. I bet Guru's been there at least once.

My favorite bar in the world, of course, is called Rookies In Cromwell. If you're not in Cromwell, Kentucky, it might not work for you, Louky. How about The Plate? And your ad slogans could be "Step Up To The Plate!" Or, "Honey, I'm just going down to The Plate for a beer."

Or, you could steal a page out of Species' book: The Hot Women Bar.

And hey, aren't drinks on the house for an Gurupie who comes to Louisville anyway? If I do make the trek, you definitely better not charge me!

There's an Elbo Room in Ft. Lauderdale as well.

My favorite name from NYC was the Dew Drop Inn. Probably still exists. They would make sweet 3-7 shot fruity drinks that any date-rapist would envy.

That, and The Man Hole, from Boy's Town in Chicago. ;)

That's actually a fairly common name for midwest bars. I must have seen a half-dozen "taverns" under that name.

There's an Elbo Room in Chicago as well... funny. I recall it being a great place for a drink - good bands...

Wasn't the Dew Drop Inn the name of the local drinkery on the old TV show "The Waltons"?

bili, that's a good name... I've seen it, but I can't say I've ever been in it...

Yeah, yeah, you'll be here all week.

I always liked Durty Nelly's in Gainesville. It's not a pun, but who doesn't want to drink in a Dirty pub? Take that back: maybe not a great name for a sports bar.

Speaking of NYC bars, Live Bait's a goodie. Might work for a sports bar in KY, especially of women drink for free. ;)

The Let's Go Inn would be just as assinine as the Dew Drop Inn, but nobody ever uses it.

I used to live across Third Street from the Granville.

Where're you going to be at Louky. I want to be the first Gurupie to buy your Bourbon.

Thanks guys, never even thought of Louky's. Still haven't made up my mind.

MBJ, it's a little bar off of Bardstown Rd, about half way between 264 and 265. I should take over mid November.

I see a new reason to travel to Louisville. I live in Indy now, but grew up about an hour west of Louisville on I-64.

There is also an Elbow room in Indy.

I liked the "Bungalow" and for something a little more ironic "Double D's Bar & Family Inn"

I got thrown out of Durty Nelly's once during a bachelor party.

Perhaps before deciding on a name, you need to consider who your target demographic is. I'm sure there's quite a disparity between what people of different groups thinks is cool. I, for one, would be turned off by a place called "Cowboys" or something like that, but you could generate a lot of interest in some places from other folks with that name.

If he called his bar Louky's, half the people would call it Lough(rhymes with wow)-kies like me and half would call it lew-kies, like it prob should be since it's a combination of Louisville and Kentucky.

Dude, we need to catch up. Haven't talked to you much since you had that situation that forced you out of the Gurupie Leagues. Send me an email.

re 27: Brewsky's? Burp Castle is next door.

I'm not a big fan of the Trappists. I'll take a couple McSorley's darks every time over a $7 belgian pint when I'm in the East Villiage.

what a great ad campaign that could make for Guru.

{scene of the local AAA ballpark. Home team at bat, runner on 2nd with a good lead.}

ANNOUNCER: Here's the pitch, and there goes Johnson from 2nd. The swing, it's a liner to right field. Johnson's rounding third...

{show JOhnson running through the dugout}

ANNOUNCER: Where is he going?

{cut to Johnson walking into "Rounding Third in uniform. He grins and turns to toward the camera}

JOHNSON: Rounding Third. Its just something you have to do before heading for home.

{cut to ballpark as Johnsons slides head first into home plate and a cloud of dust.}

UMP: Safe!

Bank Shots?

There's already a pool hall in Louisville, built inside an old bank building by that name. Good name there.

Louky, you remember a place called "Fat Cats" on Bardstown Road. I got to shake Ray Charles' hand there late one night. Broke my heart when it closed.

There's a Bank Shots in Delaware too - fitting for the bank capital of the world.

I am going to steal Rounding Third, even if Louky doesn't use it.

Louky, I got your emails from both accounts and replied to the 2nd one.

I've never heard of Bank Shots, just tried to mix in a sport and a drink. It's no wonder it's already used, though didn't think about a pool hall using it.

Thanks for all of the input, in the long run, I stayed with the original name. chose to spend my bucks on upgrades rather than new signage. It's called the "Brickyard Sports Bar and Grill".

Guru, Rounding Third, was my favorite, but it's a NASCAR crowd, with a 10 month season. While I may try to shift them to the intricaies of sports without engines, not gonna rock the boat off the bat. Adding some bonus TVs for the non NASCAR crowd, and working on my lingo.... he's a little loose, or, clean air seems like a good one, and the ever dilima of 2 tires or 4?.

The offer still stands, any Gurupies passing thru Louisville, the 1st drink is on me. Pop into the Brickyard, ask for Steve, and it's my treat. If I'm not there, tell them you're a Gurupie, and they will still fix you up.
