0 Subject: War on Terror flicks

I have recently watched two films set in the War on Terror, and I have been wondering if others have watched other films based on the same setting. If so, I would like to know those titles so I can view those films.

I have watched the Danish film "Brothers" and the Iran-Iraq film "Turtles Can Fly" and have been greatly moved by both.

I warn all in advance that both films have stomach turning scenes.

The Danish film "Brothers" has a 'Sophie's choice' scene in Afghanistan that will make you ask yourself, "what would I do in that situation?"

"Turltes Can Fly" has a more subtle, but more gut-wrenching scene, about children in Kurd controlled Iraq just before the outbreak of war, that will make you tightly hug your nearest relatives, even your second cousins twice removed. (There is one scene that will make you want to scream out, to aid the protagonist.)

So, please, tell me any other War on Terror films you have watched and are willing to recommend.

Thank you.

I recommend watching

and get over the notion that we are at "war". Calling our present situation a war just gives idiots like the Republicans an excuse to destroy our civil liberties.

Has anybody seen "Paradies Now" or "Jarheads" ?

I haven't seen those films, yet, but if you have and want to tell me your take on those films, please do.

"Paradise Now" examines motivations of suicide bombers and "Jarheads" is about the Gulf War.

Just wondering.

And if you have come across any other War on Terror films, please tell me. Thank you.

(full disclosure - the company i work for will be distributing this title for the home market come March, and i am heavily involved in that division)

Occupation Dreamland is about the battle for Falluja in 2004.

it is playing pretty limited engagements right now, but since it was just short listed for the Academy Awards for Best Documentary (that means final 15, before they pare it down to the final 5 "nominees"), i think it'll get picked up more, especially in larger cities.

while the film probably does lean left somewhat, it's a fairly accurate portrayal of what went on, and what the soldiers were thinking, from what i've been told.

in fact, the film was screened to active soldiers in Iraq, and the releasing company was very nervous about the reaction they would get. when all was said and done, the soldiers thought the story was right on.

the clips are enlightening. the theatrical trailer is chilling.

while *I* realize the War in Iraq wasn't originally about the War on Terror, the U.S. has turned Iraq into a haven for terrorists, so this film applies...

Oliver Stone is already filming his 9/11 movie. It's going to star Nicholas Cage and is based off the story of one of the firefighters. It's set to come out in 2006. There has been alot of debate on the IMDB message boards about whether it's too soon.

I personally feel it's too soon, but there has to be a movie about it sooner or later so why not around the time of the fifth anniversary? In order to grow, we've got to be able to discuss this event albeit respectfully towards the fallen and living hereos.

I worry about Oliver Stone directing the project. To me, and I'm sure most/all of you, 9/11 is a horrifically sacred event to be treated with the highest level of respect.

If Oliver Stone gets up there and blames a homosexual from Lousianna, Castro, the CIA, Joe Pesci, and LBJ like he did in JFK with Costner, then he'll deserve any and all threats coming to him.

I wish a director with more credibility like Spielberg was handling the project instead. Spielberg did Schindler's List amazingly well along with Saving Private Ryan. While The Holocaust and WWII were WAY WAY before my time, I felt he handled them with respect and a strong degree of historical accuracy.

meh. not to hijack the thread, but why not Oliver Stone? and what is too early?

i live here in NYC, and quite frankly, the sacredness of 9/11 was long ago desecrated by Bush and his ilk.
