I just got a pc game last night and when i tried to install it everything seemed to work fine. I went to play it and it started loading, I got past the hasbro screen and then it even loaded it picture from the front of the box. Then the screen just dissappears and I got an error message saying that it encountered a problem and must shut down. Send error report, or dont send report. Does anyone know why this would happen?

I tried to uninstall and reinstall numerous times, but the same thing keeps happening.

What game?

What system are you running it on?

What are the system requirements listed on the box?

How new is your graphics card?

What game?
Risk II

What system are you running it on?
Windows 2000

What are the system requirements listed on the box?
Windows 95/98 but the guy in the store said it would run on 2000.

How new is your graphics card?
Not sure how to tell this, the computer is only about 14-15 months old. It is a Dell

How old's Risk II? I love risk! Send it over to me, and I'll give it a try on my machine. ;)

I was hoping it would be one of the obvious problems that I run into:

1) not enough RAM,
2) old graphics card and new game
3) not a speedy enough processor

But if your machine's only a year old, I doubt any of those are it.

I would check Hasbro's site for trouble-shooting tips, or similar complaints.

It may be as simple as downloading and installing a patch from their site.

risk II is from 2000. I have always been a original risk player. My buddies and I used to play like everyday. Then my wife saw this and bought it for me because she wont play risk with me.

apologies for the irrelevant (now deleted) post. Wrong thread.

On the issue at hand though...not all that many of the older OS games, will run w/o issues on the newer OS's. (At least, thats been my experience.)

One work-around, would be to set-up a multi-boot menue (IIRC, Norton has software that allows this.) You can then install both Win98 SE and Win200 on the PC. Then at startup, you select one or the other OS. Whether or not the older OS will support your newer hardware, is an entirely different issue. Particularly since MS terminated all Win98 support (drivers etc) quite some time ago.

Everything I see says it is supported on Windows 2000 but if the box says 95/98 it looks likely it is an old version of the game...newer box says: Windows 2000/95/98/Me/XP.

Maybe try the free trial above and see if it will run.

Minimum system requirements seem pretty easy to meet...if your PC is only a year or so old...should be no problem.

Windows 2000/95/98/Me/XP
Processor: Pentium 166 MHz
Directx 7.0
32 MB RAM
Free hard drive space: 200 MB
SVGA Video Card 2MB Directx 7.0
16-bits Sound Card

Your machine is only 15 months old and it is running Windows 2000? That doesn't sound right. I thought they stopped shipping 2000 longer ago than that.

To add to sarge's suggestion, you could also just upgrade the OS to XP. XP will run legacy programs in compatability mode. That would be easier to set up, although you'd have to pay for the XP upgrade.

I'd still want to upgrade to XP for all the security updates and such.

The 'encountered a problem and must shutdown' is usually a sign of a bad install, or of memory/cpu problems. Are you having any problems with other programs? Do any other games run ok? Is your PC rebooting or crashing occasionally?

Agree with Balrog that it sounds strange to be on Windows 2000 if that recent. When installing and running games it is a good idea to close any programs that are running in the background and not really essential. They all draw on memory and can provide other conflicts.

Right click on the game icon (assuming you put one on your desktop?). Go to Properties. Click on the Compatability tab. Put a check in the box "Run this program in compatability mode for" and use the pull-down menu to select "Windows 98." Click on apply. Reboot (just to be sure).

See if that runs it.

I just found my reciept, I bought the computer on June 6 2004 so it has been almost 16 months. How do I find that windows system I have. I could have swore it said it came with 2000, but I could be wrong.

If it is 2000 how do I upgrade to XP? Is it free?

R9, I have never gotten that message running any other programs. Just to be clear, the computer isnt shutting down, just the game.

wiggs, click on My Computer. "View System Information" should come up on the left hand column--click on that and your OS information should come up.

Open up Control Panel and then open "System.

The first line on the right should say System:
Below that it will tell you what OS you have and what upgrades have been done.

Download the free trial here... The free trial is the full version of the game...just limited to 60 minutes of play...it is possible the software you got is old/not updated...see if the online trial will run on your machine. If it does, return the software and just pay the $20 for the online download.

Risk II at Gamespot

I threw the link in here just because I love this site. I didn't notice any available patches for the game and Gamespot is usually up-to-date with that kind of thing.

I game a lot on the PC (first person shooters and real time strategy games) and I get that problem ever so occasionally.

Here's what I've done in the past to fix it and I do it this order:

Uninstall and reinstall the game.

Update your graphics card driver. (I do it before looking at DirectX just because it's nice to have the newest drivers, unless of course ATI screws the pooch.)

Check your version of DirectX (Click on Start->Run, then type dxdiag in the box, then click OK, you'll see the version number on the bottom of the screen of the "System" tab). If it's less than the system requirement, that could be your problem.

Most of the time for me, it's a bad install. I surf the web or do something else while a game is installing and that wrecks it.

Good luck.
