Alright, so I'm gonna break down and buy an iPOD in the next week and a half.

What do I need to know?

I want something that can hold over 1000 songs, a playlist that I can manipulate, a "random" mode.

What are some other features? Pros and Cons?

Target has an I-River with a 20GB hard drive for about $183. But I don't know anything about I-River.

I do know that I'm not a big i-tunes fans, I'd much rather be able to use Windows Media player, but I can learn to deal with it!

Thanks for any help!

Most mp3 players on the market will handle over 1,000 songs, will allow custom playlists, and have a "random" mode. If that's what you're looking for, you have a lot of choices.

I only have experience with I-Pods so that's all I can speak to.

I use a video I-Pod and I swear by it. It does everything you mentioned that you needed in an mp3 player.

The video I-Pod is about the size of a deck of cards, but only a lot thinner. Not sure if that plays into your purchase decision.

I would recommend going to www.cnet.com and reading the reviews of the different models that are on the market.

Scope out Ebay, they also have a ton of mp3 players for sale. One problem you'll encounter is that since it's Christmas time a lot of the stores will be out.

One big suggestion to make to you is that you buy an FM transmitter that plugs into your cars cigarette lighter. This way you (or the lucky recipient) will be able to listen to songs in the car. That is how I use my video I-Pod 80% of the time. Nothing beats watching American Chopper on the way to work.

What it does is transmit over a dud radio station. In my case it's 88.3, but I can change that station to whatever station has the least interference.

Do you have surround sound in your house? You might want a $10 cable that will connect the I-Pod to your surround sound. That will give you an instant jukebox.

One caveat in my experience is that the battery life of a video I-Pod while playing video is a tad over 2 hours, sometimes 2 hours. For songs, I can go a whole work day (9 hours) and not break a sweat on a single charge.

Any more questions or anything post them and I'll be happy to help out.

i-river is fairly highly recommended. so are the Creative Zen players.

C-Net is definitely the place to go for reviews, but you'll have to know which ones to "discard", as IPODheads tend to diss anything not an IPOD, and vice versa.
there's also this thread, on the same topic, from about a year ago...

thanks, I'll have to check out C-Net later (blocked at work)

I'm gonna be doing a good bit of traveling over the next 2 months, so I really want it to help ease time killing in airports and airplanes for now. So I guess battery is an important factor, probably can't really recharge a battery in an airplane, huh?

But being able to play 1000 of my favorite songs at random all in one place for the car is an awesome idea!

I don't think I'd ever use the video portion. I don't really think I'd use it at home, because I've got all my music on my computer at home (with good speakers). And I've also got about 1200 songs on my computer at work where I use headphones. So this thing would be good to use for transporting songs back and forth too instead of having to burn a CD to move 20 songs at a time or so.

I just got a Toshiba Gigabeat for my birthday. It was under $300 at Best Buy and has a 40 GB hard drive. The salesman said it can hold around 10,000 songs. It does not play video, but I didn't want it to. I have a huge CD collection and I have begun transferring it to this bad boy. It's great. I also purchased an FM transmitter and have been listening to the thing in my car non-stop since. It's a fun toy and I would recommend it. It's about the size of a cassette tape and slightly heavier. It's not the tiniest one on the market, nor is it an IPod. Again, I was interested in functionality not name recognition. 10,000 songs was what hooked me.

I'm very happy with it so far.

this is mine... i suppose at this juncture, at two years old, it's a bit dated, but man, it holds a LOT of songs for a little bit of money...

i really like the Creative stuff...

The specs say 64 kbps encoding. Do you do it at that level, Tree? I go at 128. I wonder how many songs this thing would hold at a higher encoding level.

I bought the 30 Gig Photo Ipod about 6 months ago. Put all my digital pics along with all my songs on it and still have a ton of space. I've been very happy with it so far.

This thread is two years old, but I am that far behind in catching up to new technology. I've been using an iriver as my mp3 player, but just recently won an ipod nano (version 3) at an office party and am seeking some opinions.

Specifically, is there a a preferred carrying case to purchase by the existing ipod owners? I see that they come in various forms and materials and wold like to know if anyone has any recommendations on this front before I purchase one. Also, are there any other accessories that you would recommend? Is the wall charger thingy useful, or do you usually charge when connected to PC?

Any and all opinions welcomed. Thanks.

I have a 30 gig video ipod, and love it. I've now got almost 4000 songs on here, and use it as an external hard drive. Still have plenty of room.

It is a lot bigger than a nano, but I found a leather-like case for it on ebay for less than $5 - including shipping.

I also got a wall charger off ebay, but I only use it when I'm out of town and computer-less. Other than that, I charge it via my computer.

I highly recommend getting an iTrip. I can't stand commercials, and through the miracle of DVR and my itrip, I never have to listen to one again. I just listen to my ipod whenever I'm in the car, via the itrip. As long as you can find a good unused station locally to sinc it up to you, the sound is almost CD-quality.

Just bought a new I-Mac computer and I'm really itching to get my
hands on the new touch I-Pods. At $399 its a bit expensive, but
it has some great features.
