my PS2 is now making a terrible grinding sound in the middle of playing a game and the game will freeze. It takes about 2 minutes then it works again for a little bit. Anyone else ever have this problem and if so is there a way to fix it? Or should I go buy a new one?

I had that problem happen about 3 years ago with NHL 2002. It would speed up and make a noise and then it would stop and work normally. Then one day it sped up faster and faster like a plane engine made a noise and then stopped. Since then it's worked fine, I guess it kicked the habit.

Wiggs is it always the same game or does it vary.
It it is the same, the problem might be with that disk.

Haven't ran into this problem.
Of course, don't play mine that much.

wiggs- YES!

It happened when I was playing Madden 2005. It almost sounded like it was trying to eat my game. I have no idea how to stop it. Do you have your PS2 sitting vertically or horizontally?

It comes and goes. I haven't had the problem for a week or 2.

Trade it in for a new one, and pay whatever difference after the trade in credit. ASAP.

It usually happens when I am playing online. It's not the connection, I know that.

I haven't found an answer.

Laser having trouble reading the disc I believe. There is a small possibility it could need cleaning---the laser and/or the disc---but it probably will just get worse. Been there, traded that.

Clean it like you would a CD player and use compressed air on the insides while the disk tray is open. Get it to a decent point. Then trade it in faster than you can blink.

I've had my PS2 since launch day and I've never needed to clean it nor has it given me any issues at all.

I remember reading something somewhere sometime many moons ago about how you get longer life out of a PS2 if you play it vertically. Not sure if that's true or an urban legend.

dam PS2, it has been working great since my last post. Just got NBA Live 2005 for christmas, opened it today and now it wont read anything. It goes to the browser configurations and when i click it the disk itself wont even show up. How dissappointing.

Thats what happens to me every few times or so. Mainly with GTA:SA I have to open it and turn it off and on 5 times to get it to play. My other games do it alot less, but then with DVD's I can't really get anything new on it to play. I will just pop in a disk cleaner and most of the time it works right after that. Try getting a can of air and spray into it.

I've had my PS2 forever, in fact i was one of the saps that shelled out $400 bucks for the darn thing. I've had the problem a couple of times and I think it has to do with cleaning machine and disc. A can of comperessed air and cleaning the Disc has always worked.

If all else fails by an X-Box it's a far superrior machine.

Just a regular CD cleaner. One of those that has little brushes on the bottom to clean the eye. It isn't a PS2 one, just something you can get anywhere.

Trade it and all your games in for an xbox. I've seen both and there is no comparison. Xbox doesn't even need memory as it is a computer and the graphics are incredible.
