0 Subject: Favorite Games

Just wanted to see what everybody's favorite games are in a given genre:

Sports - NCAA Football 2005 (XBox) tied with Fight Night (PS2)

First Person Shooter - Soldier Of Fortune 1 (PC)

Role Playing - Vagrant Story (PS1)

Third Person Action - Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. I'd like to give an honorable mention to that PS1 game starring Bruce Willis. Everybody hated it except for me.

Strategy Game - Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis (XBox). Its like SimCity, but with Dinosaurs. Yes, I do like it more than C&C or WarCraft.

I would have to say that my favorite game of all time would be either GTA: Vice City or Manhunt.

All PS2

Sports - NFL 2K3.
Madden 2004 and NCAA 2003 are the two most current versions I have and I enjoy both of those as well. Splashdown RGW is fun too if we can count jet ski racing as sports.

First Person Shooter - Half Life (I know it's an old game, but had a blast with it). My current favs are the Conflict Desert Storms, Ghost Recons, and SOCOM Navy Seals. All fun games.

Role Playing - I really got into the Silent Hill games. If Metal Gear fits into this category it was an awesome game in it's day. Enjoyed Substance as well.

Hack N Slash: Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance and Champions of Norrath.

Racing: Gran Turismo 3 A Spec. You mentioned GTA Vice City, so I added a racing category. I had a NASCAR 2002 or 2003 game, but still think GT Aspec rocks.

Strategy Game: Umm, Escape from Monkey Island. Okay, it's a kids game, but I had fun playing it. The Sims too, up until kids started showing up earlier than I wanted them. I used to stick them out on the front lawn until they were taken away. Silent Hill 2 had some action but was a serious strategy game too.

I don't know what category Max Payne would fall under, but it was a game I enjoyed. Evil Dead, A Fistful of Boomstick cracked me up. Bruce Campbell is the man.

TB: How could I forget racing games?

GT3-A Spec is the Lord Of The Manor. Need For Speed Underground rules the school too, but nothing beats GT3-A Spec.

How did the NASCAR games work out for you? I've never tried one, but always wanted to take the plunge.

All PC:

Strategy: Starcraft - beats all Warcraft, including III, imho.
Honorable mention: Lords of Conquest, circa 1981. I have long since lost the original 5 1/4 inch disk that I used to run this game off of on an original IBM without a harddrive Not that it matters, given a lack of a harddrive to run it off of. I've been transferring it from HD to HD over the span of 5 different computers since then, and still runs great! A testament to MS's DOS emulator, I suppose. It is still the game I play the most.

Role playing: Diablo.

I don't play shooters or racing.

I still run an emulator with some old-school arcade games, but not often. Anyone have a stand-up Defender they are looking to unload?

Sports- Madden 2005 (PS2)

First Person Shooter- Halo 2 (XBOX) although multi player makes it the best

3rd Person Action- GTA III and GTA: San Andreas (PS2)

Funny thing...I hate GTA: Vice City but oh well...

My favorite game was UNC-CH at Santa Clara (except that it really did embarass the whole conference.)

Cosmo,
Once I played GT3-A Spec, all other racing games paled in comparison. I think I saw Challenger talking up NASCAR 2004 in the racing forum, but I couldn't find the thread to link you to it. I know this guy who has went all-out on his computer, bought the steering wheel, pedals, and even created a cockpit and he goes online to race. Personally, I get my butt kicked with NASCAR unless I turn off vehicle damage. I am all over the walls.

There was a game I used to love to play on my PC called Pirates Gold. I still have the game, but it doesn't work on my computer. I tried to change the computer settings, but it's outdated software.

Here is a shout-out to the Summer and Winter Olympic games from my old Comodore 64. Had a cool battle chess game on there too.

bili -- I don't play shooters either, but I picked up a copy of Star Wars: Battlefront for my boys, and it is awesome! I love it. Something about zooming in with a sniper rifle and picking off a Snow Trooper on Hoth is just very fun.

Yeah, I watched a buddy of mine play Battlefront. Looks fun. I think I would pick up the old RPG, "Knights of the old Republic," first, however. I've heard great reviews of it.

"My favorite game was UNC-CH at Santa Clara (except that it really did embarass the whole conference.)"

Too bad nobody in the Carolina organization or knowledgable fans give a crap since the game was played with Felton. A freshman PG was running the show and we know how that normally goes (especially since he isn't even a TOP recruit). I am guessing you hated the BYU game last night where UNC scored 30 before they scored 5. Expect more of the same this season. Should beat Tenn tonight by 15+...then they will act revenge on Texas in the Maui Championship. Get over it Carolina hater...this is their year.

I have KOTOR as well. It's interesting and very well done; I just haven't been in the mood to invest 35+ hours in a game like that. I'm much more likely to sit down and play a couple Battlefront battles for 20 minutes or so, or kick a little butt with Soul Calibur II, then put the Xbox down.

I have played KOTOR enough to see that it deserves all the praise it got. Once you become jedi, it's pretty fun. And I understand that the sequel looks really nice too.

I never got around to finishing KOTOR, but it was indeed very well done. I'm not much of an RPG fan either, so that's saying something.

Sports-wise, I like NHL 2005. The computer is awful again, but with a bunch of buddies its great fun. The new Free-for-All mode was a great idea too. I also used to be a big Formula 1 racer, with F1RC being my preferred game. Gave such a great feeling of speed, and actually staying on the track threw an entire 30-40 lap race was something else. :)

Strategy-wise, Civilization 3 and Master of Orion 2 are my picks. Not sure how many of you guys are old school, but Moo 2 goes waaaay back. Was packaged in DOS and Win95 formats... ;)

And finally, I'm a sucker for Counterstrike too. I usually don't spend all that much time with FPS games, but CS is different. Not sure why. Maybe just because I love sniping, and CS sniping is the easiest of them all. Call of Duty gets an honorable mention too, as it was a very realistic and well done game.

Sports - New: NCAA 2004 (PS2) more fun than this years model and they finetuned the engine from the prior years Madden perfectly.
Old: Front Page Sports Pro Football (PC) A ground breaking game with drafting, training, play design elements not seen for 10 years later on consoles.

First Person Shooter - No interest here.

Role Playing - New: None
Old: Legend of Zelda (NES8) Hero's Quest1-4 (PC)

Third Person Action - The entire GTA series.

Strategy Game - NEW: C&C Red Alert
OLD: A very low volume game that never hit the radar of anyone -Spirit of Excalibur- combined the RPG and RTS generes into one game with a historical background. I just wish it would load on XP because I bet I'd still dig it.

Arcade: NEW: Area51
OLD: NBA Jam

I still think my all time favorite series is Madden. To tough to call.

Actually THK I do root for the Heels when they play out of conference- Just couldn't resist the jab at "ol' Roy" I respect the school itself and will always be grateful for their beautiful and intelligent women. And Franklin Street will always be better than anything Durham has to offer. PS- It's easy to root for Carolina as a Duke alum in Southern California because I rarely have to interact with any UNCCH alumni here LOL.

Anybody hear of an old computer game called Realms? It was an old school floppy disk strategy game that was great back in the day. Where can one snag a copy of this?

Mike D and KnicksFan, Based on what you guys put in above, I bought a couple games.

Primal- Just finished it. It was a fun game, but more for the strategy versus the fighting. The characters and story were cool and Jen is a little hottie. I really got stuck in a couple parts and if I had any hair, I am sure I would have pulled it out. The hardest to figure out was probably the sea world. Fighting as an Undine was a pain in the butt. Great music too. I think I will try to find an album from 16 Volt. I might go back into it just to see if I can find all the cards. I missed at least a dozen of them.

Castlevania: Lament of Innocence- I was pretty certain that Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was a PS1 game only and don't buy any new PS1 games. I had read good reviews for LOI, so bought it. This was also a fun game and I enjoyed testing out what different combos of sub-weapons and orbs did. IIRC, I liked using the yellow orb with the axe. I kept playing the game until I had 100% completion, finding every relic and item. It had a Devil May Cry feel to it and was a pretty short game, but does have some replay value with the additional unlocked character and the boss mode (which I tried and failed twice before moving on to different games).

I just got my son (lol) another dozen games for Xmas, so looking forward to testing most of those out as well.

TB, I don't know how similar Symphony of the Night is to Lament of Innocence. I know it's just a PS1 game, but it's so good (and quite large too) that I'm sure you wouldn't mind the slightly worse graphics. Anyway, I'm happy you got a Castlevania game; it's a helluva series.

TB, great to hear! Primal is a very underrated (and unknown) game. Glad you liked it! I totally agree on the Undine and sea world part. Man, it tired me out being under water so much. Jen is most definitely a hottie!! I was very impressed with the soundtrack.

There was some wacky stuff throughout the game, so unfortunately I haven't let my kids play it yet.....I don't think their ready. Even the opening Club scene would scare them I think.

All Xbox

Best sports game ever: ESPN NFL 2K5
Best shooting game: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Black Arrow
Best Campaign: Halo 2
Most entertaining: World Championship Poker
Sports Games worth owing: Links, Top Spin, ESPN NBA 2K5 (hopefully ESPN baseball has a title out this spring too)
Future purchase: Probably Mech Assault 2: Lonewolf (3rd person mech game that kills the first game that I got free with my Live susbscription a year ago)
Final Tip: If they aren't on Xbox Live, they aren't worth getting!
