From wikipedia:
Most covered songs
The Righteous Brothers have been covered more than any other band; "Unchained Melody" has been covered over three thousand times since its original release. The Beatles Come Together has also been covered numerous times. George Gershwin's "Summertime" (from Porgy and Bess) has had an estimated 2,500 versions recorded. Other songs which have been released many times as cover versions include the infamous "Louie Louie" by Richard Berry, "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" by Jimmy Webb, "We Will Rock You" (Queen), "Free Bird" (Lynyrd Skynyrd), "No Woman No Cry" (Bob Marley & the Wailers), "I Fought the Law" (Bobby Fuller), "How Deep Is Your Love" The Bee Gees and many of the less recent works of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen (as of December 5, 2004, there were at least 940 published cover versions of Cohen songs [2]).

Great One, Ever since you posted this thread, everytime I hear a (supposed) cover of a song, I now have to check to be sure.
Example: Today I heard "I'm a Man", By the Spencer Davis Group. I had always thought that Chicago sang the original.
And last week I heard a cover of a cover. You're no good - Van Halen.

I will post the list of songs that made the final cut one of these days.

RE: 25
"...a song that a girl took away from me, a good friend of mine, this girl she just took this song..." -- Dreams to Remember: The Otis Redding Anthology Disc 2
Aretha's version of "Respect" may be the best cover song, but this might be the second best:
Many people - even those not in the know about music history - can tell you that the Beatles' "Yesterday" is the most-covered song of all time. Not a lot of people know that the song at Number 2, however, is a song which engendered a storm of controversy upon its release, was banned in at least one US state, and was scrutinized relentlessly by the FBI.
That song is the Kingsmen's "Louie, Louie," a 60s frat anthem and garage-rock classic that is in itself a cover - the original was done by 50s R&B artist Richard Berry, who wrote it himself as a sort of sea chanty tribute (lyrically, at any rate). In Berry's original lyrics, Louie himself is a bartender, and the singer is telling him about a girl he left behind. The reason he "gotta go" is to get back to her. Simple. Charming, even. Yet when the Kingsmen covered it in 1963, they did it so cheaply that the lyrics became hopelessly garbled. Indeed, according to the band members, the vocals were sung into one huge boom mike hanging above the rest of the chaos.
When the song became a hit at frat parties, a scene often known for lascivious and outright raunchy tastes in music, the ambiguity of the Kingsmen version's vocals caused some to believe that they'd substantially altered the original lyrics. The words are definitely blurred in the hit version - the first line of the third verse is missing entirely - but a close listen reveals that the lyrics have indeed been left intact. The controversy remains fascinating, however, even though there IS profanity on the song itself - the drummer actually blurts out a positively filthy word right at the end of the second chorus. Turns out he hit his sticks together accidentally. Whoops.

Wow, I didn't know this forum even existed for some reason. Here are some great covers off the top of my head:
The Smashing Pumpkins - Landslide, Fleetwood Mac The Smashing Pumpkins - Dancing in the Moonlight, Thin Lizzy The Smashing Pumpkins - Soul Power (James Brown) The Smashing Pumpkins - Out of Focus (live), Blue Cheer The Smashing Pumpkins - Once in a Lifetime (live), The Talking Heads (note, this one is almost completely unrecognizable)
Basically any Smashing Pumpkins cover song is an A+.
Do any of you guys know the Afghan Whigs / The Twilight Singers? The Twilight Singers released a cover album a couple years back and its amazing all the way through. The album's called "She Loves You".
On Built to Spill's Live album, they do an amazing 20 minute cover of Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer".
And of course Metallica's cover of "So What"

Pearl Jam's cover of Hendrix's Little Wing is spectacular. Also a big fan of M.A.C.C. covering New Rising Sun on the Hendrix tribute album (MACC is 3/5 of PJ and Chris Cornell).
Also, Chris Cornell's new solo album has a cover of Billy Jean.

Does this count as a cover? If so I feel it's a terrible thing. Don't get me wrong while I dislike rap, Snoop Dogg is one of the best ones that ever came out, and I can respect how "mad his flow" is. But when you do this, well it's unforgivable.

Along the same lines as 54, if you are from Chicago you know this version of a classic R&B? Rap? Hip Hop? Sorry I am a classic rocker (who is actually younger) and I am not down with the new rap lingo.

post 57 is a WEAK version of that cover. although for comedic value, when the singer busts into his RARGHHHHHHH DEATH METLAZ intonations, it gets good.
a much better cover of that song, by Jenny Owen Youngs. it's much more mellow, and sadly, Jenny rarely wears the catholic school girl outfit on stage anymore:
a fantastic cover by Jenny is Hot in Herre...she usually busts out all sorts of random covers at her shows, and the shows are generally a whole lot less mellow than the songs are in these videos. they are RAWKUS affairs, and if she comes to your town, check her out..

Just had a thought and can't believe I forgot this one. Although you'll have to be a sirius satelite subscriber and listen to the Howard Stern show. But he had Pat Monoghan (lead singer from Train) on one day. The guy did an absolutely amazing, spine tingling rendition of Dream On. Solo act. Just him and a piano.

Gretchen Wilson does an outstanding cover of Billie Holliday's Good Mornin Heartache....I'd love to see Gretchen do a whole CD of torch songs...she's got a great voice.
Tree, nice find. Zac Brown was a regular at that bar for years, so I've seen them a number of times there.
For an interesting cover, check out Billie Jean by "Dangerous." They consist of members of the 2 Skinnee Js and Tragedy who came together to do a tongue-in-cheek "All-Metal Tribute" to Michael Jackson.
Speaking of the band "Tragedy" here's some Stayin' Alive.

I don't know if anybody else mentioned it here or in another thread, but there is a great e-jukebox site. Check out Songza
The account is free. I signed up today. I received 1 email, just a confirmation. Went in and started compiling my playlist. If you can think of a song, its probably here (only 1 I couldn't find from Lords of Acid). Tons of live performances, studio albums, covers etc.
