I always start the most useless conversation topics I know... :)

So my company BlackRock is having their annual Christmas party this year at the Jacob Javits center in NYC. A very big event for thousands of employees. BUT, we are not allowed to bring any family or significant others.

What are your thoughts on this situation? Do most large companies do this? is it because of the cost of doing so? Just curious if this is a standard practice. FWIW, Merrill Lynch didn't allow any guests either.

I would say it is pretty typical...probably 50/50...some allow guests others do not...

Are you having to travel to get to the event or is everyone local?

They will be bussing us from this location (Princeton).

Pretty common, in my experience, especially with very expensive parties. Doubling or tripling of the size of the crowd would make it almost too expensive to do.

I'd say that's pretty atypical, especially for New York based companies. And the Javits Center is certainly big enough to hold everyone.

It isn't a matter of holding everyone, bh. Its the doubling and tripling of food & drink, plus the increases in the rental of the space, settings, servers, tables, etc etc.

That's par for the course Great One. One client of mine allows family members to functions, but otherwise it's just the employee.

Well its 4,000 employees so I guess I could see how doubling/tripling that number would get costly, especially with shareholders to answer to.

Think size has a lot to do with it.
I work for a very, very large company, but our Holiday Party is just for the local office.
Company pays for the employee.
Guests cost $30.
Up from $25 the last 8 years.
