I must admit I am pumped to see this. As a kid I loved the Rocky movies ----they pumped me up.Let's use this as a forum for the movie---especially for those who have seen it to comment. Itopens Christmas Day.

I've heard it opens today. I am planning on being there on my day off on Friday with bells on waiting to see this.

ROCKY!!!
ROCKY!!!
ROCKY!!!

Even if he loses the fight, which I do not know if he does or does not, so long as he goes the distance he wins in my eyes.

Sorry, but while I throoughly enjoyed the Rocky series...its long ago run its course IMHO. The idea of Rocky Balboa coming back into the ring after a what?? 20 year layoff? Garners about as much excitement in my eyes, as the idea of a Tyson-Ali match.

IMO the only very good Rocky film was the first one. The second best boxing film I've seen after Raging Bull - tho I've never seen On the Waterfront.

2, 3 and 4 were all good novelty flicks, typical 1980s "check your brain at the door" fare. Bad acting, silly music-video montages, blatently unrealistic fight sequences, etc., but with a certain (now nostalgic, i guess) charm. I supposse I might feel different about them if I was an adult when they were released.

I won't discuss Rocky 5.

But the reviews of this one have been very good and despite the franchise having run it's course. Based on what I've read it might easily be the second best film in the series.

Good boxing movies:

Cinderella Man
Million Dollar Baby
The Quiet Man (John Wayne)--not really about boxing--Wayne plays a former boxer but it is great film, often overlooked

Never saw Denzel Washington in "The Hurricane" though I heard it is pretty good. Same as "Body and Soul" or "Champion" (Kirk Douglas).

Yeah, someone here was saying it was unrealistic that a 50-something would be trying to fight and I thought that was pretty funny. Apparently they are unaware that George Foreman was heavyweight champion at age 45. And Holmes should have been as well after he controversially lost to Oliver McCall.

Me too. I hate to break it to some people, but the following occurances in movies are also not real:

lightsabers
warp drive
"the force"
Batman

That's why it's called "the movies". Have fun. Don't get so anal that it's not real. I don't believe Rocky Balboa is based off a real guy so lighten up.

As an aside, Julio Franco was probably born sometime around the events of the Old Testament and he's in better shape than most people in their prime.

Rocky I-IV were all good and/or fun movies and anyone that says they weren't hasn't seen them in awhile.

Boxman, I just laughed my arse off at your [8].

While this review is underwhelming, the critic has this to say:

"Rocky Balboa"... straddles the line between nostalgia and self-parody...

The idea of yet another "Rocky" movie writes its own punch lines, and Stallone deserves some credit for being aware of this phenomenon and having enough confidence in himself not to care.

I get the feeling that this film was written (by Stallone) in such a way that it's apparent that they know that we know it's a big joke.

That could be entertaining.

Thanks MC. :)

Here's another review.

When it was announced Stallone was planning a sixth edition of the "Rocky" franchise, some 30 years after the original and a decade and a half after the last installment, you had to wonder: who was he going to fight, Joan Rivers?

Well, here's the good news for those of us who will always have a soft spot for the Italian Stallion: "Rocky Balboa" is not the embarrassment many expected it to be. It's actually the best "Rocky" movie since the original -- a fitting and triumphant final chapter for one of the most iconic characters in the history of motion pictures.

The thing about the Rocky franchise, with the exception of V, is that both avenues worked for me. The serious, story-driven, movies in I & II were both great. I still get into it when he fights Creed in II. When Mickey yells, "NOW!" and Rocky starts punching back, I get chills.

Then III & IV have that superhero feel to them and it works in both movies. IV came out smack dab in the 80's when it was us against the Russians in real life. Who didn't want Rocky to beat the pants of off Ivan Drago?

No matter how Rocky Balboa turns out, as long as he goes the distance and gets his own personal respect back (or whatever it is he's after), I'll be happy with it. Although it would be nice if Rocky wins because then I can hear people complain about how a movie is not "realistic".

I really doubt Rocky VI can beat Rocky IV as a sequel. Rocky IV had two 3+ minute montages of Rocky training plus he beat Ivan Drago. Of course, I was always a sucker for the Rocky/Apollo training montage in III. Them hugging in the ocean is possibly one of the gayest moments ever shown in a non comical way.

HA HA!!

Rocky IV had two 3+ minute montages of Rocky training plus he beat Ivan Drago.

Those montages were great.

If someone could somehow edit Adrian saying "Win...win.", then cut to Rocky drinking four or five raw eggs from Rocky I, then cut to the Rocky IV montages, then conclude it with "one of the gayest moments ever shown in a non comical way", we'd have the greatest training montage of all time.

Do we use "Hearts On Fire" as the song for the whole thing too?

The Champ was the best boxing movie I'd say, though I loved Million Dollar Baby and the Rocky Series. Cinderella man was also good.

I saw it this afternoon and I loved it. I don't want to give much of the story away so as to avoid playing a spoiler, but if you liked Rocky I or II you're going to really like this one.

The movie "experience" outside the feature film left a lot to be desired, but it was worth it.
