Subject: OT - Camcorders

We had a 8mm camcorder that broke (only about 4 years old) and the cost to repair it far exceeds the cost of buying a new one (which is not surprising). I don't want to spend any more than $400 since I figure this new one will break too in a short period of time. My question concerns the types of camcorders now available. There are DVD, miniDV's, and Hard Drive models. Are any of these far superior than the others? Does anyone have a strong preference toward one particular type?
