Can someone do that counting thing in excel to determine the number of albums by artist?

Heavy on rock, very light on jazz and blues. Kid Rock but no blues artists at all? No Benny Goodman,Bird, etc? Etta James represented by a slow covers album?

Shakira? Beyonce? This whole list reminds me of some early internet web pages, which consisted of people putting up the names of the albums they own to show how varied their tastes are. Maybe this lady had a vote.

All the rest are listed once. Eight different soundtracks are listed and then you also have solo artists listed and their band listed (Ozzy and Sabbath, McCartney and Beatles, etc.) which I didn't count.

I am with you, PD. You cannot have the Definitive 200 list and not even touch on each genre of music. I usually hate when we try to rank music all lumped together. Even just trying to rate "rock" and putting the Beatles, Elvis, Metallica, Zeppelin, Floyd, and on and on into the same list makes my head ache.

29. OUTKAST – SPEAKERBOXX-LOVE BELOW
30. DR. DRE – CHRONIC
31. BEASTIE BOYS – LICENSED TO ILL

Putting Outkast infront of two of the most defining albums of a genre goes to the point made above of someone's early internet list of music they own.

That Outkast album has been one of the biggest of the last 10 years, but I agree it shouldn't be ahead of either of those when you add in their impact (in a recent poll on greatest songs of all time, "Hey Ya" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" were the only "modern" songs in the top 25 or so).

Santana's Supernatural at 13 while The Wall is at 25? Please.

The best they've got Jimi Hendrix at is 41? The man revolutionized the guitar. He was, and arguably is, the gold standard for guitarists.

Help me out here, but I didn't see the soundtrack to Tommy on there. The friggin' Top Gun soundtrack makes it, but not Tommy? What gives?

ROFL! Yeah, Kenny Loggins over The Who, who were at the vanguard of rock opera.

What's with the soundtracks? I mean sure Forrest Gump has a killer soundtrack, but none of the music was recorded for the film...it's just like a great mixtape. They might as well throw Greatest Hits albums in this list, or Now That's What I Call Music 437.

While we're at it KnicksFan, let's throw Monster Jams and Monster Booty on there too. They ought to just make the mockery official instead of trying to pass off this list as something legit. ;)

I'd mention the song "Take My Breath Away" from Top Gun, but the homophobe in me won't. :)

I've tried several times to talk about this list and it's too big a task. I suppose I can nitpick a little here and there.

Rush Moving Pictures is higher on my list than 2112. I like and have both, but Moving Pictures isn't even listed.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is pleased to recognize this varied collection of some of history’s most influencial and popular albums...

.50 cent and Beyonce? I like and own both, but where are Britney Spears and the Back Street Boys if we are going to list artists based on recent commercial success?

Anita Baker on the list, twice? Dixie Chicks 3 times?

I agree about soundtracks. If you are going to have them then include greatest hits albums like the Eagles GH 1971-1975 or Steve Miller Band GH. Another of my favorites is Bad Company 10 from 6.

I am sure I will have more to add.

Since they said the word influential with this listing, how can Johnny Cash's At Folsum Prison be behind either of the Green Day albums? I think Green Day just influenced more alternative rock that it was already an existing part of.

Cash's album was a totally different thing. One of the inmates wrote one of the songs.

because TB requested it in another thread...

i've actually bitten my tongue in this thread, because there is so much to be said, that it's really difficult to know where to start.

i'll start by saying "i don't get it", about this list.

it's the Rock-and-Roll Hall-of-Fame list, so, to a certain extent, you would expect some genres to be left out, even with a very loose definition of "Rock-and-Roll".

that being said, to leave blues off a R&R list entirely borderlines on being so completely stupid, it goes a long way to negating the entire list.

but, the biggest problem, is figuring out how this list came about. is it based on sales? influence of the album? of the artist? etc etc

it's certainly a confusing list. Seeing Pearl Jam ranked so high is pretty confusing. Seeing Shania Twain ranked so high is absolutely baffling. that being said, i think her high ranking is more a testament to the brilliance of her husband, Mutt Lange.

Lange needs to be at the top of TB's list. he had a hand in producing at least 5 of the records on that list - Shania's, the AC/DC records, and the Def Leppard records.

just, the whole list is confusing. a great majority of those records need to be there. but Shania? Dave Matthews? Linkin Park? Titanic soundtrack?

just to name a few...

Bob Marley at 125? come on.

like i said, i don't know where to start. i simply don't "get" this list at all.

You know, I hadn't really even got to looking at how they were ranked. I was still stuck on who got put on the list and who get left off. I know it has to be hard to limit a lumped-together list to 200 albums. You have to balance pioneers with commercial success.

Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but no Soundgarden? Did George Harrison have that big of an impact after the Beatles split up? Luther Vandross? Kenny G? Radiohead?

I know I am taking this in bits and pieces, but I don't think we could agree if they listed the definitive 200 artists, let alone albums.

And on the soundtrack note, I was equally baffled. Though I can kind of see where Grease or Titanic could be counted (though I don't think they deserve it anyway, but I can see where they are coming from) because thats mostly original music made for the films... but Forrest Gump - as KnicksFan mentions... its great mixtape! thats about it.

What is Shania Twain's "Come on Over" doing at 21, while "Hotel California" is a 35? She must have shown the person who compiled it her Ta-Ta's at one point in her life. Also noticed, no Garth Brooks.

The list is comprised of influencial and popular, so she should be on the list. But if there are two critaria's, one should not out weigh the other. Hotel California for example is a very popular album, and influencial as well. It even coined a term I believe, "Life in the fast lane."

Not sure what I heard, but after checking myself there she does have a few amazing things under her belt...

-Biggest selling album of all time by a female artist
-Biggest selling Country album of all time

140. FRANK SINATRA – IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS

lol - ok. wrong frank. ever heard the name Zappa?

no rush/moving pictures?

NO YES/FRAGILE?? or even 90125 for that matter.

no thin lizzy/jailbreak? great album start to finish.

no CCR?

no Supertramp?! Breakfast in America? Bueller. Bueller.

This list (and a big chunk of the albums on it) needs to be burned and forgotten.

Just walk away holt. walk away. forget. oh man.

NICE OF EM TO FIT JETHRO TULL AQUALUNG IN THERE RIGHT AFTER ORIGINAL CAST – PHANTOM OF THE OPERA HIGHLIGHTS. Ahhhh Jesus save me!

The Doors, L.A. Woman...

only one Who album makes it?

no KINKS?
no allman bros?

no Velvet Underground
no Genesis (of either variety)
no Styx? not a big fan, but they fit Journey and Boston on there. why not Styx?
I see they fit Cat Stevens in there, but no James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, Dan Fogelberg, or Jim Croce.

191. STEELY DAN οΏ½ AJA
nice of em to fit it in right at the bottom of the list.

There's just no rhyme or reason to this list. It's just a somewhat random list of some popular albums.
