So I just got all this fancy home theater stuff (and kind of working as you can see in the other thread!)... 50 inch LCD, home theater, HDMI.
But this isn't a technical thread. Give me 3 movies that are absolutely amazing to view on the "little big screen" I now have. Great visuals, action, color and of course a great movie!

I'll get this rolling with some obvious ones.

The Matrix
Braveheart
Lord of the Rings

I always liked Top Gun, but that isn't about picture, it's about the sounddd.

I saw the Gladiator on IMAX when it was out, it was pretty damn good.

Great One: Glad to hear your interest in this stuff. I'm a home theater addict myself too. I have a widescreen 65" Mitsubishi DLP 1080p and nothing has looked better than King Kong on HD-DVD. I wouldn't classify Kong as a great movie so I'll leave it off my list.

Pirates of the Carribean 1 or 2
Charlie & The Chocolate Factory

(No, I don't have a Johnny Depp fascination.)

Old School Special: Rocky IV.

Now that you've come this far, Great One, you should start looking at a Blu Ray or HD-DVD player. That's when you get into the bees knees level of quality.

A regular DVD, IIRC, only shows video at a 480p level of video quality. With Blu Ray and HD-DVD you can go up to 1080p if the television supports it. There is a noticeable difference.

Congrats on the new hardware. I hope you enjoy it.

The opening sequence of Star Wars Ep 3 is a must. :)

Ditto on Gladiator.

I do have a 1080p - so BluRay is on the horizon. Probably via the PS3 which is why I found that great review I posted in the other thread.

I can imagine Pirates being pretty good as well as Wonka because of all the great color and sound. Nothing wrong with Depp! lol...

My brother said Fight Club, I can picture that final scene with the building falling and that Pixies song playing... thats gonna look awesome!

Boxman - I just got the 57" Mitsubishi 1080DLP, I can't even imagine the 65" version!

I've got some free rental coupons, so I'm also looking at all these suggestions.

Question...if you play HD-DVD on regular DVD player (but on HD-TV) is there a difference than on HD-DVD player?

We are going to be buying a 1080i in the very near future and wondering if purchasing HD-DVD player is absolutely necessary?

I am Jack's favorite movie. ;)

I could watch Fight Club on one of those old movie reels like when I was in grade school and it would still be great.

I do not believe you can play an HD-DVD on a regular DVD player. You need an HD-DVD player.

Honestly Katietx, I would strongly consider Blu Ray before HD-DVD. There is no clear winner in the format war yet, but having a Blu Ray player (via PS3) and an HD-DVD player (via XBox 360's add-on drive) if I could only pick one format I'd stick with Blu Ray. I don't know what it is about the technology, but the sound on Blu Rays are noticeably better and the picture is outstanding.

The biggest difference that I've personally noticed between Blu Ray and HD-DVD is the sound quality. I don't know what it is because I think they support the same sound formats in terms of Dolby. The picture quality so far is equal and I still believe nothing has beaten Kong's visuals on HD-DVD.

When I went back home I watched V for Vendetta on our big screen TV with surround sound. The movie itself is incredible but the sound in surround sound it just awe inspiring.

I'm big on extras. I'd recommend the new Brazil release or Dawn of the Dead: Ultimate Edition.
