Subject: EA Sports Signs exclusive with the NFL

EA Sports just snuffed out their competition by signing an exclusive with the NFL and NFLPA to end the rest of their competition--ESPN/Sega. They already have exclusives with FIFA and another sport. This will lead to higher prices and the ability to hold their high Madden price all year. ESPN came out with a game that actually was rated higher than Madden this year for the first time ever and sold it with a Max. price of 19.99. Many stores offered it as low as 14.99 which forced EA to drop their 49.99 price by $20 after only 3 months.
As consumers, the competition is what makes the games better and the prices lower. I don't see how this helps anyone but EA and the NFL and NFLPA who must have got a truckload of money up front. |

Yeah, I'm not a fan of "exclusive rights."

Yeah, this sucks. I thought this year's ESPN game was much better than Madden, and the price was great. Looks like ESPN went for a price war to get a foot in the market, and Madden responded by shutting them out completely. EA must have really seen a hit in sales or I don't think they would have done this.
Anyway, now that my finals are nearly complete, I'll be back on Halo2 alot the next few weeks. I hope I get better because Ref and everyone else was cleaning my clock.

I enjoyed ESPN, but when Madden got down to $30 new a week or two ago, I traded ESPN in and got $10 for it. $20 for Madden rocked. I still enjoy it more. But that $19.99 ESPN deal, in advance of Madden, was indeed too good to pass up.

I'm surprised the NFL thought this was in their best interest. I guess they got enough cash from EA to cover what they would have got combined from all of the former NFL game manufacturers? I mean, the more games (especially cheaper ones) the more NFL merchandise floating around out there. That's what the NFl should be interested in.
Aw, whatever. I'm going back to Tecmo Bowl.

Marcus Allen to the left or Bo Jackson to the right. Hard to stop the Raiders run game. Sometimes I would play the Giants because LT was the only guy who could block every FG and XP attempt.

ESPN and the 2k series has been the superior game since its inception, IMO. I won't buy Madden and I think this deal with the NFLPA stinks. I also heard that EA is trying to get the rights for MLB and NBA as well. SegaSports has been impressive in MLB and especially NBA (and better than most of the EA series') and it sucks that they will essentially be forced out of the sports gaming market.

I've seen where the ESPN 2K5 is the highest rated sports video game ever. Many places had these games as low as $14.87 brand new from time to time. Meijer just had a special of buy one get one half off and they were selling out of the ESPN games. I will say that the Colts can NOT stop the run in 2K5. Some teams, like the Riaders are overrated.
I don't play a lot of hoops but someone gave me 2K5 and I've played it a couple of times. It's rated higher than Live as well. I've always sworn by EA Sports until I played 2K5 football. Will be jumping on 2K5 ESPN baseball. Just wish I had more time to mess around with Xbox.

Oh ok, thought you knew the actual store. Wal-Mart stole the idea from good ole' Fred Meijer.

WalMart's got Madden 2005 for under $20 now.
So, given equal pricing, which would you guys recomend, ESPN or Madden? I'll be buying one of them, and I've gotten Madden the last couple of years...

I would recommend Madden. I think EA always has better sports games; however, I also own 2 ESPN games.
This exclusive rights sounds like a possible monopoly of the football gaming world? Anybody think ESPN could have a legal argument? I don't really know, just doesn't sound right...

Just picked up a game by EA, Lord of the Rings: the III age. It's a great fantasy rpg. Turn based combat system using the the same engine as Square's Final Fantasy series.
Thought this was kind of a unique departure for EA becasue they're so well known for thier sports games.
I've played both the Madden and ESPN versions of NFL 2005 and they're both excellent. I don't think you can go worng with either one.

Too bad, as ESPN's 2K5 blew Madden out of the water in terms of play and extras. Oh well, I guess there was more money to be made by signing this deal.

Take Two (The producer of the ESPN games) now has an exclusive with MLB which locks out EA's MVP Baseball. I guess what goes around comes around. It's bad for the user as the prices won't stay low. ESPN's 2K5 baseball comes out Tuesday (Today) while EA's MVP comes out either Wed or March 1st (have heard both). ESPN is still 19.99 while EA has dropped their price to 29.99. Some stores will have them for less.

MVP2005 comes out today and they dropped the price to 29.99, this is MVP's last season. Weird to see Take Two get the rights, they are the ones that own Rockstar (GTA) and stuff like that. MVP wasn't suppose to be out until the 1st, so not sure why it was moved up a week.

They wanted people to buy MVP before they spent all their money on GT4! ;)

My guess is that ESPN will be the most popular one online. but is there a site that has the two reviewed and compared?
