Today I stopped into Best Buy checking out HD Tv's and looking around to see what ones I might be interested in and noticed a sign about Sony TV+PS3+Game+Blueray Movie=Save $600. So basically you are getting the PS3 for free (yeah yeah laugh) in the deal. Trying to figure out if either of the TV's are that good and worth the deal. From some of the reviews i've seen both sound very nice, but wondering if anyone has had any experience or knows anything extra about HD TV's.

Sony TV+PS3 Deal

1st one is 40" Sony LCD KDL40v2500 for $2090, this one would fit into my current entertainment center TV slot by a few centimeters.

2nd oneis 60" Sony SXRD Projection HDTV KDS60A2020 for $2690, this one is literally the SIZE of the hole entertainment center!

Both are 1080p, then i'd pick up the PS3, MLB 2007: The show and Casino Royal and be on my magical way taking care of two birds with one stone in getting the PS3 and HD TV.

I just bought a big LCD TV for my bedroom, and did alot of homework. My findings:

1) If you plan to game, definitely get a LCD TV. Projection is decent for PC/Xbox/PS3, Plasma is bad, but LCD is best.

2) The Sony v2500 was not well received on the forums I posted questions on. The 40" LCD (1080p) that was the consensus 'best value' out there (and the one I ended up buying) was the Samsung 40" LN-T4061F. linky

3) The viewing distance should be the criteria you use in choosing a TV size. Mine was for my bedroom, where I would always been lying 8 1/2 to 9 feet away, so anything bigger then a 40" was out of the question.

Future Shop/Best Buy has a chart they use to recommend a TV size. Figure out how far your couch/chairs will be, and then choose a size. Anything under 8 feet, do NOT go higher then a 40". For a 60", you should be at least 15 feet away, iirc, though the store employees can tell you for sure.

The Samsung I got ended up costing me 2100$ Cdn, and came with a 500$ stereo system for free. I opted out of the Samsung speaker set they offered and instead got a 500$ credit that I put towards a 700$ Harman-Kardon receiver and UBL 5.1 speaker set. Your deal seems similar value-wise, except for the fact that the Sony v2500 was one of the weaker 40" available.

Staying in the Sony line, the Bravia KDL-40XBR4 was highly recommended (here) in preview reviews, but it doesn't ship until August. Tech is always like that I suppose, and I don't know how much better this one is then the v2500... just that the Sony fanboys think its a hugely big deal. Should you wait for the new one, or grab the old one now? Fick if I know... ;)

A final option, the Sony KDL-52XBR2 . 52" LCD that got high marks as well.

Good luck Punk!

I'm trying to help someone with a similar decision. They are looking for a 37 (or maybe 40) inch HDTV. The 37 inch Vizio they found was highly rated by most... but its only 720p and even though it says it accepts 1080i signal - I'm pretty sure that just means it accepts the signal but then still puts it into 720p.

Is making sure its a true 1080i (or 1080p) HDTV really important for a tv thats only 37 inches? does size even matter?

When I bought mine last year, everything I said was to make sure I got the above (I got the 1080p Vizio). We can't seem to find a 1080 HDTV at 37 inches for under $1000 which was loosely the budget.

In the end i went with a 37" Sony Bravia 720p. I figured that with this TV it was going to be something as the main TV for a few years and to not worry about it being 1080p, since TV won't be in 1080 for a while.

Just for clarification, there is a huge difference bet/ 1080i(interlaced) and 1080p(progressive). You would be amazed at the clarity of the 1080p, but currently the only way to get true 1080p is by using HD DVD player or a Blu Ray Disc player. Right now HD television is broadcast in either 720p OR 1080i, depending on the station, and the 2 resolutions are pretty much the same. As far as size, I would say anything under 40", you are wasting your # paying the higher dollars for 1080p. 40" or bigger, it is worth every penny.

I figured that with this TV it was going to be something as the main TV for a few years and to not worry about it being 1080p, since TV won't be in 1080 for a while.

Currently DirecTV is supposedly working on 1080p broadcast, so it isn't as far off in the future as you may think. The way I see it, any TV you buy today SHOULD be still working well 10 years from now, (except for a few brands I won't mention)and 1080p broadcasting should be the norm long before that, so it was worth the extra $$$ on the better resolution.

BTW, I have the Samsung LN-T4065F, which is pretty much the same TV as R9 linked to except mine has a 15000 contrast ratio vs the 10000 contrast ratio on the 4061

more to think about... here is the Vizio I was thinking of reccomending Vizio 37 inch

This is for the parents of a friend. They are a bit older (not all that tech savvy) and I don't seem them getting a blu-ray or hd-dvd player anytime soon, so going with the 720p 37 inch may be just fine for them. They just want a nice clear picture to watch TV on.

As someone who owns a ton of DVDs(around 850) I have been hesitant about the whole HD thing. These recent prices are finally gonna get me to budge. Almost picked up the A2 that was going for $99 at a bunch of places last week but I really like Best Buy's current deal. They're offering the A3 HD player for $199 (was $299) with 10 HD DVDs. 300 and Bourne Identity in box, your choice of 3 in store below $34.99 and 5 through a mail in rebate.

Anyone else have an HD player and have comments or advice? I guess Blu Ray was ahead but this HD price drop could change things up a bit.

I'm going to call Cablevision and threaten to cancel my "Triple PLay" service and say I'm going to Direct TV now that my 3 services for $100 1-year trial is expiring...

anyone had success with this? I'm hoping they re-up me for another year at the introductary price.

Do the A2 and A3 upconvert DVD's too?

Yes.

Delivers greatly enhanced video performance with standard DVDs by upconverting their video resolution to HDTV-compliant 720p or 1080i via the HDMI interface

I'm gonna stop by after work. I have a 12% off coupon which sweetens the deal.
