Anyone out there with a Blu Ray - curious what you think are visually some of the best movies on there. Like if I am trying to sell someone on how great the picture is, what movies should I use to demo?
Of course, it needs to be a decent movie too. |

300 is pretty awesome on blu ray. Of course, it would still be awesome on a 12 inch b/w tv with Beta.

From what I've learned, HD is pretty much on the same level as Blu Ray and is a lot cheaper. But the cinch for me would be that BR can't read ordinary DVDs and HD can and make the regular DVDs even crisper. Don't have first-hand knowledge of the quality comparisons though.
I've been told that the DVD upconverters work pretty nice too, but haven't seen it for myself. I've been a little skeptical.

I just got a Samsung 40" 1080p and love it, especially with a 1080p unconverter dvd player. I chose the upconverter over the other 2 options, HD DVD or Blu Ray, because of the price AND because I wanted to wait and see which of those 2 wins out. It was under $100 and I could n't be happier.
As far as movies go, Happy Feet or any of the other animated flicks are fantastic on it.

Blu Ray is great. I have both HD-DVD and Blu Ray and Blu Ray has superior sound. I would give it the edge in video quality yet nothing beats King Kong on HD-DVD.

Ref - that's false. BR players do play regular DVD's. In fact, I finally unplugged my regular upconverting DVD player after some of the latest upgrades to PS3 that improved its upconverting capability. With this DVD's look close to High Def- pretty close to some of the stuff off of cable. BR and HD-DVD media are essentially the same price... and with the PS3 user base, BR will probably win out.
But, to answer the original question, the Pirates movies are really good, Corpse Bride is amazing, and 300 was sweet; actually, Apocalypto is very good and was probably one of the best action movies I've seen in years (though fairly gruesome at times). Also, the picture in Crank is pretty much perfect as it was filmed with HD cameras.
Lastly, you should pick up the Nine Inch Nails concert film Beside You in Time - I've by far watched it more than any other of the movies I have - mainly as background music. It's the best sound I've ever heard in a recording.

I've been on a buying frenzy - up to 26 now. Ratatoullie (sp?), Cars, and Full Metal Jacket arrived today. Now there's a triple feature. I actually ordered a couple on Saturday (Fifth Element and Dracula) from what RSF linked. Amazon actually has buy-one-get-one-free on a bunch of Sony and Disney disks now - but nothing I want. You could get the two Pirates moves for like $25 total.
back to the start of this thread, I also got Planet Earth a couple weeks back.

i'm still floored that anyone would be making a decision to buy one of these machines.
this is beta vs vhs all over again, only with more apathy.
i honestly don't see either becoming the dominant force for a long, long time. one may win over the other, but DVDs will have the foot hold for quite some time.

The huge hardware price drop for the A3 did it for me. I paid $160 for the machine and 10 titles. The upgrade is very noticeable on a big screen HD TV. I also have a huge collection of standard DVDs and the player upconverts those.
Toshiba released this statement:

re 14; yes it is VHS vs Beta, but with a difference. In the early days of Beta, SONY stupidly declined to allow various "genres" on BETA. Right, from what I have read/recall, porn wasnt available on BETA and it was THAT, which predominantly led to the VHS victory. This time around, SONY hasnt shown a tendency for such puritanical thinking. My bet? BR by a HUGE margin, and within 2 years.
