0 Subject: Movies we've all watched a 1,000,000 times.

Posted by: Texas Flood
- [326462912] Tue, Dec 21, 2004, 16:29

We all have our favorite movies we've watched over and over and over. Every time these suckers show up on late night TV or a rainy/snowy Sunday afternoon whatever the case may be we always tune in to watch it one more time.

Here's my top 10 list. This list is not what I consider to be the best movies of all time but it seems like i've watch them all many many times. Most of these are older movies in fact they're all really old. They just don't make em like this any more.

Ben Hur
It's a Wonderful Life
The Hustler
Inherit the Wind
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
The Longest Day
Cassablanca
To Kill a Mockingbird
Rebel Without a Cause
Blackboard Jungle

opps i cheated one more:

The Godfather I, II & III.

By chance I'm refiling stuff today and ran across my notes on favourite/best movies by decades. Hate to reveal my low taste, but here is a list of movies I've watched many many times (not equal to a "best" list):

Casablanca
The Wizard of Oz
The Great Escape
The Dirty Dozen
How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
A Night at the Opera
Annie Hall
Crimes and Misdemeanors
Lawrence of Arabia
Patton
Witness
The Sting
1984
A Man For All Seasons
Ten Little Indians (1966)
Betrayed
Dr. Strangelove
Day of the Jackal
Death Wish
Fahrenheit 451
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Play It Again, Sam
The Pink Panther
Sleeper
Hound of the Baskervilles

and the movie sleeper of all time:

Charlie Chan at the Wax Museum :)

When I was a kid, I think I watched The Goonies every time it came on television.

Since the advent of DVD's, I have several movies that I watch probably monthly.

1. Road Trip
2. Meet the Parents
3. Reservoir Dogs

I have many favorite parts of movies that I cheat and watch stand-alone from time to time.

1. The light saber battle between Qui Gon, Obi-wan, and Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace.

2. The scene from The Rules of Attraction where the guy recounts his European vacation with a 2-minute run on sentence accompanied by a rapid fire visual montage.

3. The frat house visit at UT in Road Trip. And the part with Tom Green and the snake. I can't get enough of that.

MBJ- If Big Lebowski is the 2nd best movie of all time to watch when stoned, what's the first? Half Baked? Dazed and Confused? Up in Smoke?

Anyway, my list:

Fight Club
Dazed and Confused (must've watched this movie 50 times my sophomore year of college alone-- dated a girl who's only owned this movie, so inevitably it'd get put on and at some point in the middle of the night I'd wake up to hear Matthew McConaughey going "You know the great thing about these high school girls? I get older, they stay the same age!" Classic)
Scent of a Woman
Carlito's Way
Godfather
American History X
The Jackal

Some others I'm missing I'm sure...

Great thread. I had this conversation with my brother a few months ago since we enjoy the same type of movies. These are not necessarily my favorite movies or the best movies I've seen, just the ones that I cannot turn off when I happen upon them. I guess I show my age by most of these as well. Ha!

Dumb and Dumber
Tommy Boy
Office Space
Groundhog Day
So I Married an Axe Murderer
Back 2 the Future (all three)

MBJ- If Big Lebowski is the 2nd best movie of all time to watch when stoned, what's the first?

Without a doubt, it's Werner Herzog's Even Dwarves Started Small

If you're smoking and watch that movie, always make sure you have a buddy, 'caused it'll make you do strange, paranoid things.

With new movies showing up every few days from Netflix, and with a dozen or so new DVDs still in plastic (not to mention my short attention span and mlb, nfl, and nba games on nightly), there's only a select group of movies that I'll continue to sit through for multiple viewings.

a lot of them are the 'dumb' comedies that I'll run across on basic cable or hbo:
Caddyshack, Blues Brothers, Animal House, etc.
Super Troopers, Office Space, Dumb and Dumber, etc.

others:
Dr Strangelove
Trainspotting
Amelie
Dead Alive
Meet the Feebles
Heavenly Creatures
LOTR (note the pattern?)
Dazed and Confused
Jackie Brown
Kill Bill(s)
Goodfellas
Taxi Driver
The Shining
Full Metal Jacket (admittedly the first 45 minutes many more times than the whole film)
O Brother Where Art Thou
Raising Arizona
Spinal Tap
Best in Show
...

BZ - That's absolutely awesome. He's a hero of mine. (Was he wearing his leather napsack?) You're right, he's a genius - if a highly eccentric one. One of the last truly independent thinkers.

It's funny, because he wouldn't sell out to the studios he never made much money on any of his movies, back in the day, taking years to get financing and making some movies, in bits in pieces, as he got funds. However, becaue of his stubborness, he retained the rights to all his films, and now he's making a fortune on the DVD sales.

I envy you.
