0 Subject: Movies you are embarrassed to admit that you own.

With the other movie thread getting good posts and some tips on movies I need to buy, I figured I could start this thread for laughs and some tips on movies to stay away from. We have all bought some stinkers. Whether you were suckered in by the $5 bin at Walmart or just saw some "stars" in a movie and thought it might be a good flick, list some of the worst movies you own. You can also list some movies that you were seriously disappointed with.

Here's mine:
1) White Man's Burden with John Travolta and Harry Belafonte- Poor acting, poor direction, poor film all around. It was made in 1999 and I thought Travolta's last bad movie was Urban Cowboy. I was wrong.
2) Lost in Translation with Bill Murray- Bill Murray doesn't belong in a movie that is not a comedy.
3) Going Overboard with Adam Sandler. I am a huge fan of Sandler and love silly comedies. This movie sucked.
4) Jawbreaker with Rose McGowan, Rebecca Gayheart, and other hotties. I admit to buying this movie solely because the cover. As Plato once said, do not judge a DVD by it's cover.
5) Cabin Boy with Chris Elliott- I just hit an all-time low admitting I bought this.
6) Trial and Error with Michael Richards, Jeff Daniels, and Charlize Theron- Embarrassingly bad.

Do I have to count movies that I received as a gift?

You didn't like Lost In Translation? I must be the only one that thought it was a classic. Yes, I said classic.

Here's my list...

Dragonfly - Kevin Coster. Bad, bad, bad. How does one go from making uber-films like Bull Durham, Field Of Dream, Dances With Wolves and Silverado then wind up in this crap?

Kung Pao - My friend bought this for me. We have a tradition of buying each other bad flicks.

A Clockwork Orange - Everyone loves this movie except me. I loathe this film. I'm not anti-Kubrick because I think 2001 is a masterpiece, but I just did not get this movie at all. Kubrick's work as a whole seems to be either sink or swim with me. 2010 & 2001 - awesome. Eyes Wide Shut - very good, not great. Artificial Intelligence (1/2 Kubrick, 1/2 Spielberg I believe) - very very bad.

Goldmember - End the Austin Power series...NOW!

Atlantis (Disney(?) animated movie) - Michael J. Fox can't even voice act. His career should've ended with Family Ties.

Cosmo, I couldn't even finish watching it. I still have it, so if I break a leg and am stuck at home for an extended period (and have some medication) perhaps I will give it another go.

LOL about Going Overboard. I bought that at a thrift store for 2 bucks, and it was brutal. The Milton Berle cameo was kinda cool though. I think the story behind that film was that it was filmed in the 80s, and wasn't even released until the early 90s when Sandler got huge.

TB: I get looks at parties and conversations when I go around telling people how awesome I thought Lost In Translation was. I've seen it three or four times.

I've never talked to anyone who has liked it.

TB, et all, slightly OT: Do you have any films that are like that where you just love it, but everybody else hates it?

I liked Waterworld with Kevin Costner, but most people hated it. Same with Starship Troopers.
I don't know many people who have seen Heathers with Christian Slater and Winona Ryder, but when I make them watch it, they think it sucks. That movie cracks me up..."I love my dead gay son"...lol.

I get a hard time for a couple of my favorite movies:

Saving Silverman (which is currently on TBS!)
Dude, Where's My Car? (one of 3 DVD's I own!)
Baseketball

TB - I actually liked, and own (on VHS) Trial and Error! (mostly because of Charlize Theron) and Cabin Boy was one of the worst movies of all time, IMO.

I think Sour Grapes, Larry David's film, is great. I don't know if most people dislike it, but I do know that very few have ever seen it.

Zoolander rocks. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson are freakin hilarious in that movie. I just watched Johnny English recently and both of those movies crack me up for the same reasons. Silly stuff.

The peer pressure was overwhelming so I finished watching Lost in Translation today. Sorry, it just never quit sucking. The acting seemed poor and forced through-out. Many scenes drug on, like his commercial scene, or just felt uncomfortable because nothing was happening. Maybe I was missing some subtlety, but I just think it was bizarre. Several parts and even camera shots made no sense, like the one-night stand he had with the singer or the shot of his toes during the fire drill. Truthfully, I didn't get the bond/friendship they made. Not enough that she was crying at the end. I could go on and on, but I doubt there would ever be a "lightbulb" moment where I would reverse course and find a reason to ever put this into my dvd player again.

Okay, I listed some movies that I think suck. Some of you chimed in to let me know that you have horrible taste and liked those movies (lol...just kidding). How about some more opinion on some bad movies.

Here's another: Wagons East with John Candy and Richard Lewis.

TB: I earned some Starship Troopers converts when I told them to look at it like an old World War II propaganda film. All the commercials showed the glory, but then when they switched to the battle scenes our troops were getting clobbered by the bugs.

I saw Easy Rider last weekend. It was honestly disappointing. I was expecting some huge anti-establishment thing and all I saw was Fonda and Hopper do a bunch of drugs. I'm glad I bought the 35th Anniversary addition because the soundtrack is great, but I was expecting a lot more from this movie.

I wouldn't say I hated it. I would watch it again, but it just wasn't "The Godfather" of hippie films that I expected it to be.

My old lady and I pretty much share most of our possessions, including our integrated DVD collection. As a result, obnoxiously displayed on my shelf are Grease and [shudder] Saturday Night Fever. But in my opinion they don't really count because (as I'm always quick to note whenever mocked for this by visiting friends) they wouldn't be there if not for her.

However, I do own the John Hughes 3 DVD set, The High School Reunion Collection, with Sixteen Candles, Weird Science and The Breakfast Club.

There. I said it.

We own all of 6 DVDs, and as of this christmas, "Tommy Boy" is part of this exclusive collection.

No wonder my wife doesn't like to hang with her big bro. ;)

I did, however, get to balance that out with the original "Battlestar Gallactica" two hour pilot! Wahoo!

I just watched that tonight, Bili. I think the next episode is on tomorrow night.

Tommy Boy is funny. GI Jane is horrible, TF. If we were having a contest, you would surely get some votes.

Wierd Science and Breakfast Club were cool flicks in their day, but Sixteen Candles...uughhh. Grease is a classic. It wasn't cool to admit you liked it when you were a teen or if your pounding brews at the local pub, but the songs are just so cool. LOL, okay maybe it's still not so cool to admit you like Grease. I remember my parents taking us to the drive-in. When we got there, they chose Grease. They let my brother and me go sit on a curb and watch Star Wars (for about the 10th time in two weeks.)

The Toxic Avenger?? An American cinematic classic. A masterpiece. The Toxic Avenger is not a movie. It's a film.

I own and proudly display the Tox Box 4 disc set with Toxic Avenger and the two sequals and also the cartoon feature, Toxic Crusaders: The Movie.

Tho now that I've seen the contents of the other three discs I'd really recommend saving the money and just getting the original feature.

Yeah, Mike D, what else does a 17 year old have to spend their money and winter afternoons in Buffalo on besides liquor or high quality horror.

I haven't seen it since, but I do recall I deep-fat fryer, and blind, blond bimbo.

MITH, Saturday Night Fever was pretty good--a snapshot of the times.

But if you owned the sequel (Stayin' Alive) I'd have to come and slap you.

That said, I saw the sequel in high school when it first came out, at a drive in on a date. Didn't see much of the movie.

I was looking through some stuff the other night and found that I also owned, "Top Gun" & "The Color of Money".

"The Color of Money" had to be the worst film Paul Neuman ever made. Espically since "The Hustler" was such a great film. Top Gun was just plain unrealistic. The only redeming quality was watching the dog fight scenes.

Cliff Hanger

Last Action Hero
Who Framed Rodger Rabbitt
Howard The Duck
Blue Lagoon
Wyatt Earp, Kevin Costner
The Postman, Kevin Costner
Water World, Kevin Costner

any movie with Kevin Costner, excluding Field of Dreams....but it would have been better without Kevin Costner.

Dirty Dancing
Footloose
Flash Dance

CCP,
Here is Lost in Translation summed up in a short music video. Truthfully, if Scarlett Johansson wasn't such a hottie, I don't know if I could have even watched the whole video. I think I am going to wrap that movie up and send it to a family member as a gag gift for xmas.
