0 Subject: Best Place to get a HDTV?

Hey Guys,

I am a active poster on the Football Forum and I want to ask a question to the RotoGuru world:

Does it make sense to go out on Black Friday to get a 40+ inch LCD HDTV?

If so, which stores are offering the best deals?

Or should I wait and just purchase a Vizio instead?

I've made up my mind that I am 100% getting one this holiday season, and I am sure I am not alone on here of those looking to make a big purchase such as this. I've been browsing around, using sites such as techbargains.com, blackfridayhome.com and just want to see what everybody else thinks...

Oh my Lord, please don't go shopping tomorrow. Are you mad? If you can tolerate the lines, the stock outs, and the traffic then by all means. I was fortunate enough to have Wednesday off and I got well over 1/2 of my Christmas shopping done in a lot less time. I'm sure I paid a couple extra bucks for the goods, but there were no lines, the stores had everything and the traffic was nice and lite.

I have done the Black Friday madness before and in hindsight it wasn't worth it.

Good for you that you're making the jump to HDTV. You're going to love it. I bought mine at Circuit City. I'm upset with the way they handle warranty work, but otherwise I got a fantastic TV that was much cheaper than a comparable model at Best Buy.

One thing that would make me nervous about buying a big ticket item tomorrow is just how much info are you going to get out of a salesman tomorrow that has 100s of other customers to deal with? I've always preferred going in on the proverbial "slow Tuesday" for big items because I have one or more people answering questions and providing solutions.

Good luck.

Got a Costco near you? Mine has a 50" Vizio Plasma for $1199, which is great, BUT, they have a coupon for tomorrow for $200 MORE off. $999 for that is tremendous. Not sure if that coupon is online, I didn't check.

Holy smokes...just found this one:

Mitsubishi DLP HDTV - 65", HDMI, 16:9, 1920 x 1080, 1080p, USB, S-Video - FREE SHIPPING

Dude...65 inches!

OK, its not an LCD (its DLP [read, projection]), but dude, its 65 inches!

1080p...and 65 inches.

If I only had a spare $1399.99.

Did I mention it was 65 inches?

Thanks for the heads up guys. I went over to Circuit City for the Sharp Aquos on Black Friday for $799 and the last one was sold to a guy three spots in front of me! What sucks is that the guy two spots in front wanted the Samsung DLP 50in for $800 and the guy in front of me wanted the Toshiba 65inch DLP for $1400.

Fortunately, I had a backup and got the Panasonic 42in Plasma down from $1500 to $1000 instead. Good TV, solid reviews everywhere, just $200 more than I originally wanted to spend. In hindsight I didn't want to wait out all night so I just went 30m before the store opened and was like 350 in line! I hustled my way to the TV section like I was boarding the E train in MSG/Penn Station and got what I could while it was there...

Boxman, I agree, I will NEVER do that again!

I wish I had a Costco to goto around my way, but we only have Sam's Club and BJ's.

I have a Panasonic 42in Plasma from a couple years ago and it has treated me well. We just found it wasn't big enough for the family room the way we had re-designed it. So we moved it to the basement (woo-hoo!).

Congrats on the TV by the way. Since it sounds like you got it at Circuit City allow me to give you some unsolicited advice. CC sets you up with a third party provider for warranty work. In my case, my TV (a model that is nearly identical to the one RSF mentioned in #3 BTW) had an overheating problem. Since they didn't have my geographic area (which is suburban Chicago, I'm not in the boonies or anywhere close to that) in their system for a warranty provider it took 5 days just for the warranty guy to call me to setup an appointment. In total, I waited around 7-9 days IIRC for the repair.

So, if I was you I would call CC with a phony service problem and cancel it days later just to establish yourself with their warranty system and get setup with one of their third party providers.

Overall though I'm extremely happy with the TV and the bang for the buck I got for it. It sounds like you got a great deal as well.

Sams Club and Costco generally have the same kinds of products for similar prices (they shop each other).

I'm also in the market for a new set, albeit a smaller one (apt living), for my little office/den. Am looking at a 32" LCD, and using Consumer Reports, AVS Forums (think boxman 1000x), and my noggin (my dad was a TV repairman for 25 years), I'll likely go with a Sony, Toshiba, or Samsung. The Panasonic 32LX700 with the 120hz refresh option is very intriguing to me though, as CR rated it highly, and this refresh feature is optimal for gaming, and I would have a Wii connected to the set. The downside is this dang LCD has only two HDMI inputs where most have 3. I could always get a switcher down the line if I needed that third input (currently, I'd use one for the HD DVR, one for a CD player), and Oppo makes a good one. I am also keen on the high rating for angle viewing CR gave this Panny as viewing in this room would be not always dead straight on. Looking forward to my first flat panel...have always had CRTs (the dad thing; they always had (and it's now past tenese) the best pic, but alas, they are heavy and now extinct...rightfully so). Video ramblings. Fortunately, I have a CC, BB, and a PC Richards all w/n walking distance and all 1 block away from each other for shopping, but I'd still likely spend a tad more and go with Crutchfield for their excellent service. Sometimes shopping in Manhattan for a big ticket item is a hassle if things go wrong soon after.

I recommend checking out cnet.com. Really helped my search.

AVSForums.com would be helpful in addition to CNet (nothing against Ref though!)

I liked CNet better, only for the fact that on AVS some people liked the TV's some people hated them. Too many of each side per TV. Whereas I got a good discription on CNet.

Yeah, maybe you get TOO many opinions on AVS Forums. Makes sense...

Depending on what you want to spend on the SS, you have the perfect option to match the TV if you want to go SS in a Box.

The Sony Bravia DAV-HDX501W has really worked well for us.

DAV-HDX500
The link is for the 500, but only difference is that it does not have the wireless for the rear speakers.

Listened to that at Best Buy last week, and wasnt happy with it. Had a "tinny" hiss that was fairly persistent. (Of course, that could be hearing damage on my part too from too many...well, you know already. lol)

Looking to put a bit more into the SS than a HTIB can provide. This links to a thread, where I have posted links to the RCVR and Speaker setups I am looking at atm:
