I'd hold off on the Baseball games until the new ones come out Jan-March.

NBA 2K8 is much better than EA Sports NBA Live. So there is my simple and straightforward reccomendation.

And this is from an EA Sports loyalist... I usually stick with EA for all my sports games.

Ok, cool. I think 2k8 is cheaper too(well, at least for PS2 it is). I got most of the Live games, so i was leaning towards just getting that. If 2K8's there, ill grab it.
I get impatient, i might see if theres a cheap baseball one out there on ebay or something and just get a random one.
We havent had a baseball game out here since about 2003, so the last brands i remember are All-Star and High Heat. Hoping something is still around that looks familiar.

if u get a baseball game then MLB the Show is considered to be the best. It is made by SONY and I have it and enjoy it. Although unless u just love baseball games would wait til next years game.

Also if you are into things other than sports games I ahve both R&C:future and Uncharted and boh are great PS3 exclusives. COD.4 is also supposed to be a really good game

Okay, i just got my PS3, and ive opened it and now i find i cant play my PS2 games on it. The lady at the store said i may not be able to play all of them, but i can download them onto a USB stick and then i can. Anyone know if this is correct and where i download them from???

The latest PS3's aren't backward compatible is my understanding. Mine (60 Gb verion) is. I think it's the new 40 Gb version that's not, but you can probably google it to find out. She may have been referring to some of the PS1 games being available on the PSNetwork for download, but that's not what you want.

60 gig plays all because it has the emotion engine.
40 gig has nothing and that's why it's cheaper.
80 gig uses an computer emulator to play them.

Grab a copy of Resistance: The Fall of Man for sure. That's a really good game. I'm playing Unreal Tournament 3 now and it's allright.

Thanks Slackjawed.... im pissed, coz the lady specifically said..."My son has this one, and plays his PS2 games on it, but he just needs to download something for them to work."
Im also confused as to why its backwards on playing PS1 and not PS2 games.. that just seems a bit dumb to me??

there are still 80 Gb ones around - I think they're $100 more. You could exchange it if not having backwards compatibility is a show-stopper for you. I think you've got a legitimate beef based on the misinformation she gave you.

Actually, with all the demos on the PSNetwork and the good games out there - Uncharted, Rock Band, Resistance, Super Stardust HD ($10 from PSN), etc. you'll probably find you don't want to play your old PS2 games much.

The reason why it plays PS1 and not PS2 is because it does not contain the emotion engine which ran PS2 games. The PS1 ran on a basic CD model type.

Okay, cool. I knew i should have gotten it ages ago. The guy at another store said the old 40Gig used to play PS2, but not the new ones... oh well.
Just got NBA 2K8. Its alright... taking a bit to get used to after playing NBA Live forever. Still cant figure out how to dunk properly. Lol.
The manual doesnt seem to really help that much at all.

dunno about ps3, but I've always preferred EA's March Madness college basketball game over any of the NBA games. I'd have to hear some pretty overwhelming praise before I'd go out and buy ANY non-EA sports title.

Unfortunately, EA isn't licensed to make an MLB game now (ridiculous!), so I have to play their college baseball game.

i think in general EA is considered to ahve done a poor job with their PS3 games and that the XBOX360 games are better

Just wondering, I just bought a PS3, and reading through the manual, it seems that you can connect wirelessly to the internet out of the box. Is that right, or do I have to buy something?

Yeah, that's right. You can go into setup and tell it your network details - similar to what you would do for a laptop. At least that's how I assume it would work - I've got mine wired, but I setup our Wii over Christmas the same way.

OK, so a PSIII 60g plays PSII via hardware. I read recently where the HD can be swapped out on these and a larger capacity one installed. Since the compatability is hardware driven vs software, this should pose no issue then ofr the 60g version right? But the software driven emulation...is that software on the HD, or programmed into the ROM memory?

It's a different chip that does the emulation (the emotion chip, if memory serves...) on the 'motherboard', so you can swap out the 60gb drive for a larger one.
