Please help! Im lost. Cant remember how to get area. Please leave how you got anwser so I cant try to explain it back to my kid.
Lydia is putting photographs in an album. She does not like to leave more then 1/3 of a page uncovered.
all in inches Album page height 6 3/4 width 9 photo A height 4 1/8 width 2 1/2 photo B height 3 5/8 width 4 photo C height 2 1/8 width 2 3/4 photo D height 2 1/8 width 2 1/8
1. Above are the dimensions of an album page and 4 photos. If Lydia puts these 4 photos on 1 page, what area of the page will be left uncovered?
2. Is this amount more then or less than 1/3 of the total area of the page?

Area is height times width. I'd suggest converting these to inches to get total square inches for the album & each photo. Add up the photo inches, then subtract that total from the album total to get the amount left. This will answer #1.
Multiply that times three. If the result is less than the total album area then the answer to question 2 is less.

I am not doing it for you but area is height * width.

So is the album page 60 3/4 inches total?

Ugh. Having more problems. Is this correct?
(3 5/8 * 4) = (15/8 * 4/1) = (60/8) = (7.5)

that is not correct
(3 5/8 * 4) = (29/8 * 4/1) = ((29*4)/(8*1) = (116/8) = 8 goes into 116 14 times with remainder 4, so answer is 14 4/8 = (14 1/2)

to convert 3 5/8 into a fraction you multiply the denominator 8 by the whole number 3 and then add the numerator 5 so (8*3+5) = 29 and then you put that over the denominator of 8 so it is 29/8.
Hope that helps.

You know that (3 5/8 * 4) has to be more than 7.5 because 3*4=12. If you then multiply the 5/8*4 you get 20/8 or 2 1/2, add that to 12 and you get 14 1/2. Just another way of doing the problem. You could also convert the fractions to decimals. 3.625 * 4 = 14.5
