OK gang....got an HD LCD Sony Bravia on its way. (Interim TV as its a 40"). Looking at building the theater system around what I "project" to be the next TV, hopefully 54"=60" in the next couple years. (5 years ago, these things were 10 grand afterall. Now the 40" thats coming, I ordered via COSTCO for 1099.)

Here's the rcvr I'm looking at. Seeking speaker suggestions;

Sarge, you mentioned this in a different thread, but just to reinforce I would also not recommend a HTIB. They don't offer the amount of inputs and outputs that other types of systems offer.

Your beastly receiver (good choice) supports 7.1 but the speaker system you've chosen is only 5 speakers strong. I have a 7.1 setup as well. The other two speakers are used for "presence". Whatever the hell that is, but they do add to the experience.

I use a pair of Bose 161 speakers for that. You can get them for around $160. Maybe cheaper.

yea I figure I can add the other 2 speakers any time. No big rush on those. The RCVR I finally settle on, I want to be a bruiser (or beast as you put it). I dont want to see any need for replacing it in just two years time, and I think back to the old stereo component days when we bought rcvrs, amps, pre-amps, reel-to-reels etc etc. Not truly wanting to go through all that again.

OK, did some serious soul searching, and then "shopping" the net. Crutchfield was a GREAT site for sourcing the products I wanted, but with the other two speakers I wanted, the set with cables through them, was $4400 and I could NOT pull that trigger.

HOWEVER...via AMAZON, and getting the cables from dcables.net.....$2773.91.

Man, Sarge. Are you attempting to single-handedly keep consumer spending and the economy afloat?!?

Well, truth is (and not sure if its more testament of how bad the previous two weeks were, or how good yesterday was) but I made juuuuuuuust a wee little bit less yesterday, than I did last pay period.

OK, the rcvr and Infinity speakers ordered, are as in the two links above, but through different vendors.

The other two speakers are also Inifinity, TSS-SAT4000. A pair of those. TSS-SAT4000

Plan is to use those two floor speakers (wall mountable if you care to) as the F-Rght and F-Lft, and then sub 2 of the smaller ones from the 5.1 system above as the 6th and 7th "environmental" speakers.

With luck, it will all be here by Fri, installed/assembled/setup by Sunday...and we;ll know shortly how well I managed to do putting the Home Theater together.

One of the desirable things about that beast rcvr, is that it is networkable with the computer. So when we do NETFLIX streaming, it will run in through the cable modem to the PC, through to the rcvr and make use of the same surround sound setup as a movie played via the PS-III, which I got since its Blu-Ray ready and was cheaper than a dedicated Blu-Ray player. That means I dont have to get a new sound-card and the speakers I have for the computer are perfectly good for what it gets used for.

Can we play the poor peoples version of this thread?

Here's what I've found so far in my last couple of days of research:
Onkyo HT-SR800

More in my $400-$500 price range. Anyone got any other ideas for that range?

If it helps, here's my TV (Mitsubishi 57" 1080P...)

sarge the only piece of advice i might suggest is to get a stand alone center channel speaker to match the 2 floor speakers.

re 10: Looks like a solid purchase with two caveats:

But there is a catch: the HDMI jacks are video pass-through only--they support as high as 1080p resolution, but they won't carry the audio signals from your disc player, game system, or set-top box. Annoyingly, that means you'll need to connect a dedicated audio feed as well; stereo RCA or (for surround) optical or coaxial digital or analog multichannel. The latter option--running six or eight cables to the Onkyo's 7.1-channel analog inputs--is your only option for getting the best sound from HD DVD or Blu-ray players. Of course, you'll need to make sure your player has analog audio outputs, and can decode the Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD soundtracks found on HD movie discs--not all of them do.

The other annoyance is that there is no video conversion--so for each video input type you use (composite, S-Video, component, HDMI), you'll need to connect the corresponding output from the receiver to the TV, then toggle the TV input in tandem when you switch the AV receiver source. (Your best bet is to get a good universal remote and do some judicious macro programming.) By comparison, a receiver that offers HDMI video upconversion--such as the Onkyo TX-SR605--can be connected via a single HDMI connection to a single HDMI input on the TV--and you're done.

The lack of up-converting, was a deal breaker for me. Likewise, the need to run a literal plethora of audio cables.

However, for 2k less...that looks at first lance to be a very solid option.

In all honesty though, 2800 isnt a whole lot less than I spent in the late 70s, on my quad-stereo component system. Marantz, Bose, Pioneer etc etc. By the time I bought the speakers (4 at something like 225 ea IIRC in 1978 dollars), the turn-table, the amp, the pre-amp, the reel-to-reel....Hell, most of us in the barracks that did this, spent about 6 months pay on the damn things. lol
