Alright folks, give you something else to think about instead of football this weekend... so as some of you know I'm getting hitched next spring. And of the precious few things I have control over - #1 are the musical selections. And I'm looking for some suggestions and idea's.
We've got an hour of background cocktail music to fill. Roughly an hour (?) for some dinner background music. Then 5-10 songs I will make sure to get in during the main dancing hours... some entrance music, 1st dance, closer etc.
To give you an idea of tastes, I'm looking to be different here since we are both eclectic. I had an idea for all instrumental cocktail hour music - BUT instrumental Tool or Metallica etc etc maybe one of those string quartet deals or some piano stuff. Quiet but good acoustic stuff for dinner? -- maybe some Death Cab, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Buffet, James Taylor etc. Most people use "Last Dance" at the end? screw that... we'll be rocking out some Willie Nelson "The Party's Over" Don Meredith style. And I've already gone over with the DJ if I hear The Chicken Dance I am asking for a refund lol...
So I guess throw out some ideas if you have any, or even just plug in what you used or what you would use if you were getting married. I will definitely use some of these ideas and let you know which.
Here are some tentative ones for me... still will be plenty of adjusting, but to get the ball rolling.
Cocktail Hour - Instrumental rock Dinner Selections - "Follow You Into the Dark" by Death Cab for Cutie Entrance Music - "The Game" by Motorhead 1st Dance - "Wonderful Tonight" by Clapton or "I'll Catch You" by The Get Up Kids Cut the Cake - "When I'm Sixty-Four" The Beatles Last Song - "Party's Over" by Willie Nelson NOT to by played - Chicken Dance Make sure to play at some point ->

Time to play the game.
I support Wonderful Tonight all the way.
Also, it seems like you're not a fan of the Chicken Dance, but how about the Electric Slide?

I'm comfortable with the Electric Slide though I will not participate... will also approve YMCA cause it gives Grandma something to do while sitting in her chair. Gotta think about everybody!

I'm also considering "The Final Countdown" for the grand entrance... My suggestion of "Its The End of the World as we Know It" didn't go over as I hoped. :)

I was able to work Metallica into the wedding video; granted it was "Nothing Else Matters" but it was still Metallica. : )
Just make sure for the rehearsal your wedding officiator does the "Princess Bride" ceremony: "Mawage is what bwings us hewah togethaw today... Wuve, twue wuve." You can find the whole thing through Google. And don't forget to sing her "Always and Forever" (Kip's song to Lafawnduh at the end of "Napoleon Dynamite.")

Metallica would be sweet... I'm comfortable with working them in!
We are both in agreement that we want to hear Sandlers song from The Wedding Singer as well. Excellent. Now its just about placement :)
Perhaps I'll Rick Roll the dance with my mother... thats just a scary good idea.

Wonderful Tonight was the first dance at my wedding 19 years ago. Acoustic solo version before the band came on. It was an old song then. Anyways, it seems to have worked for us so far. I have no idea what the last song was. I think we were still there, though. We had a couple rock bands, so there was no way the chicken dance was played. Congratulations and good luck. Play stuff the two of you like.

Congratulations Great One and his present and future better half!
"The Wedding Song (There Is Love)" - Noel Paul Stookey -- from Peter, Paul and Mary fame. (sound is a bit off, though)
"Have I Told You Lately That I love You" - Van Morrison

My wife and I had Wonderful Tonight as our first dance.
The last song was Closing Time (Semisonic?)
I agree on the no chicken dance, I told the DJ if it was played he wouldn't get paid. Some people were upset, but it was my wedding.

Semisonic!
Closing Time isn't even in the top 5 Semisonic songs. I'm a big fan of "Across The Great Divide". But not for a wedding, obviously.
I recommend Edge's Theme (by Alterbridge) during dinner.

That's a killer entrance song. I'm having a hard time picturing it at a wedding without some flashing lights and maybe you spitting some water at the guests. Get Ready For This by 2 Unlimited (instrumental mixed version) seems like a cool entrance song as well. Reminds me of Space Jam.
Don't forget to mix in a song or two where all the old-timers can get out there and show off their Twist.
I was thinking the Scorpions have a lots of cool rock ballads that make for good background instrumentals, Holiday, Wind of Change, Send Me An Angel...all are nice songs to slow dance to as well.
I really like I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing by Aerosmith and If Tomorrow Never Comes by Garth Brooks. If I was getting married I'd have them in there somewhere.

We are absolutely gonna be twisting to Chuck Berry... always loved the one used in Pulp Fiction.
I think I've got the first dance figured out. Now we love Springsteen, and I always loved the words to If I Should Fall Behind and how its a duet and all that. But I just thought it was too slow. But I just heard a more up tempo version they did for the Dublin sessions concert and I'm loving it, and it seems it would be easy to dance too like a waltz or something. Trying to find a copy.
