0 Subject: Utah Ski Trip

So I think this winter I'm flying out to Utah by myself to go skiing for a week. I've been looking around online trying to find good deals and tips, but overall haven't had too much success.

One thing I'd like to do is avoid having to rent a car. I found that if you buy the Super Pass ahead of time (gets you $55 a day tickets to Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, and Solitude) you also get free access to UTA buses and trains. The UTA website is a nightmare though and I'm not having much success figuring out if its possible.

As of now I'm planning on staying seven nights and skiing five days, and I have enough Hilton Honors points for three free nights, but even still that'll probably be about $400 for one person which seems a bit much.

Have any of you guys planned a ski trip out there? Any tips?

I've skied a fair amount in Utah, but have usually stayed with friends and relatives. The exception is over at Park City, which is outrageously expensive to stay.

I've also made an attempt to use the UTA, but gave up in frustration and rented a car.

Sorry I can't be more helpful or optimistic.

Not sure what you are looking for, but before the Olympics, I found some of the best, cheap skiing out at Powder Mountain. Not the prestige and size of snowbird and Alta, and a bit farther north, but they were cheaper and left half their trails ungroomed. If you like powder, it was a paradise. Looks like their prices have caught up somewhat, however, after hosting. Too bad.

I spent a season working at Snowbird after college. The best terrain of all the resorts in my opinion. And the tram gets you from bottom to top in about 15 minutes (3100 verticle) and IIRC carries over 100 people.

One thing to look out for is that if a big storm hits while you're there, they will close the road leading from Salt Lake up the canyon to Snowbird and Alta. Nobody can get up or down, It probobly happened 10+ times while I was there. It was 20 years ago but I can't imagine avalanch threat has changed that much in that area. It about a 10 mile road.

If you're staying up there when it hits you're in for a couple of big, big days. The kind of snowfall that closes that road can be 1 - 3+ feet. You have got that mountain to yourself along with employees and hotel guests until they can get the road open. Several times we were "stranded" a night or two. (Our hotel would stuff us all into an employee hotel room)

It looks like I'm probably heading to Denver now instead, due to the cheaper flights (and no longer needing to transfer to SLC on one of those small planes).

But the skiing seems to generally be more expensive. Loveland has a great deal but I don't know if that's a five day type place. What do you guys think?

Are there any good deals for Breckenridge or the other places in the area? The best I can find is that Peaks thing where it's $355 for five days at Breckenridge if you order online ahead of time.

It looks like I'll be going mid January or February on non-Holidays. Is this generally a good time?
