For a little over a year now I've been getting calls both on my cell and home phone from a robocaller telling me, "The factory warranty on your car is about to expire. This is the second and final notice. Please stay on the line for a representative to assist you in extending it." It is obviously a scam of some sort because if you google the phone number it show up on scam-watcher sites.

The calls to the house come at night (after the dinner hour; an air of legitmacy) or on the weekend to my cell, presumably so I don't lose any minutes (how considerate of the scammers!) and we just hang up. But yesterday I got one during the day. At work. On the office line. Let the games begin!

I stayed on the line while I reverse-white-paged the number. It was somewhere in Iowa. When the representative picked up, she very cordially thanked me for staying on the line and asked me how she could help me.

In my best confused/desperate high school Spanish I said, "Necesito este. Mi auto es muy mal. Y, y... y mi tocadiscos esta decompuesta!" [Translation: I need this. My car is very bad. And, and... and my recordplayer is broken!]

She says, "Uh, I'm going to have to have someone call you back. I don't speak French" and she hung up before I could go any further.

I really need this extended warranty, "Porque, que lastima! Solamente dos chicas en la cocina!" [Translation: Because, what a pity! There are only two girls in the kitchen!]

No one has called me back yet. I think I'll call the Better Business Bureau. : )

I get one at work about once a week. If I don't pick up it leaves a message, but there's never a person on the line.

Just got another one. Same set-up. This call came from Little River, SC. The number whitepages.com to an older (+50) family. I'm thinking the scammers have a way to use another line to bypass their "true" location.

The person that picked up the line asked if I was interested in extending my vehicle warranty and I said, "Si, si! Este es muy importante!" [Yes, yes! This is very important!]

"Do you speak English?" she asks.

"No. No Ingles ahora hoy." [No. No English now today.]

"Do you understand English?"

"Si. Un pocito." [ Yes, a little.]

"I'm going to take you off our call list. I don't speak French."

"Bueno. Adios!" [ Good. Good-bye! (Literally 'Go with God')]

My Spanish teacher would be so disappointed that my Spanish sounds like French. Sigh.

I get about 3 a week on my cell - problem is they are in Spanish! That's what I get for living in South Texas.
